Wonderful night for Alabama football I grew up watching this rivalry and it was so sweet to beat Notre Dame the way Alabama beat them that night for the National Championship RTR!!!.
Friend that wen to the game told me that they held the Bama and ND players at the tunnel while waiting to take the field. The Bama players towered over the ND players.
Here I am in 2021, back re-watching this game. It strikes me that ND came in ranked #1, Bama #2. Gives you some idea of just how skewed the media's perception gets over ND. It came out weeks later that Bama players admitted ND was the 5th or 6th best team they'd played all year. I guess that's what you get when you attempt to calibrate talent across conferences that don't play each other much. Personally, I think it's a shame Te'o got all those awards (not that he wasn't a good player, btw) because if he would've played in the SEC, he might not make 2nd team conf, much less 1st. Don't believe me? Go back and watch this tape. Look at the talent gap. Then consider the competitive games Bama was in with other SEC teams. This game was over after one quarter, and every player/every coach on that field knew it. ND players stating their post-game narrative, "They were just a better team today" was a compete joke. No disrespect meant. Just truthin'.
They were only #1 because of the BCS system. Despite having so many close wins, they were undefeated, and that was enough for the BCS. Had the CFP existed back then, I'm sure Alabama would've been #1, and maybe they could've faced a tougher opponent.
@@joeykeenan2079 probably not, in the CFP, ND would likely have been #2 and faced K-State for the first round The Conference Champs and Notre Dame Stanford(losses: Notre Dame and Washington) Florida State(losses: Florida and NC State) Alabama (loss: TAMU) Notre Dame (no losses, key wins: Stanford and Oklahoma) Oklahoma(losses: Notre Dame and K-State) and Oklahoma State(loss: Baylor) not Nebraska(lost to Wisconsin, who qualified because OSU and PSU were bowl/CCG-banned
A big ND fan asked me at work what I thought would happen... I said a blowout.. He went nuts rambling about the best offensive line and all sorts of other stuff.. I'm like, you have one TE that was awesome and the only player I was worried about, your DBs haven't faced anyone and will look clueless. Our RBs are going to murder you.. Guess I was right.
What are you talking about? Notre Dame was rightly #1 as they hadn’t lost and Alabama had. In college ball if you’re a power 5 school and undefeated, you are almost automatically ranked higher than any teams with a loss. The only time an undefeated team would usually get ranked lower than a team with a loss is if the undefeated team plays in a lower-tier conference, such as Utah in 2005 when they played in the MWC, Boise St in 2007 when they played in the WAC, and Northern Illinois in 2012 when they played in the MAC. Notre Dame is independent but of course is considered a power; ND’s athletic director Jack Swarbrick is even treated equivalent to the commissioners of the power 5 conferences.
@@TheLocalLt 😅😅... This comment is so funny to read after an undefeated Florida state got left out of the playoffs completely to 2 teams with losses... Lol
Dude....Bama has destroyed plenty of teams. ND beat the Pac 12 and Big 12 champs that season and beat 9 bowl teams en route to 12-0. Bama has just been a dynasty in this current era.
I remember being in school down here in Alabama and having Auburn fans and LSU fans talking the Irish up. I said at one point "We are gonna run it up the middle and watch em struggle for air trying to stop us"
+okrajoe ND Statistically was suppose be the best D in NCAA that year just barely in front of Alabama in a few spots like points allowed and yards per game. Teo was a overhyped LB who was a Heisman candidate who they "thought" would slow down Alabama's rushing attack...instead he froze when he was left in the open or got trucked.
+MCG55SS Notre Dame was way overrated. They barely beat Pitt...so I knew Bama was going to kill them..Hell Lacey was bigger than Teo so I know Teo would not be a factor.
This was a fantastic season to watch. Every single game I was on the edge of my seat against below average unranked teams such as Pittsburgh BYU Boston College and purdue! And once we played a real team in a BCS bowl game we get dominated like always! Love me some typical Notre Dame seasons Go Irish !!!!!! ☘️☘️☘️
I remember this disaster. Notre Dame essentially lost this game because they completely failed to plan properly for Alabama. Brian Kelly that year thought the Irish could simply follow the same plan they'd worked the entire season and make no adjustments and they paid the price. Nick Saban knew what to expect. He prepared and Brian Kelly didn't. And that's why Alabama left the field with the trophy.
Nah bruh heres the facts about Alabama and Notre Dame (This goes out to #TROLLTIDENATION) Notre Dame has 22 undefeated seasons-A|labama has 10 Notre Dame has 22 polled national titles-Alabama 21 Notre Dame has 7 heisman winners-Alabama 2... Cboesch Music And what does any of that have to do with the Irises getting the licorice beat out of them in this game? Nice try though. Next time let’s have a spelling contest!
@@Cboesch_Music Notre Dame hasn't truly been relevant in 32 years, they were able to maneuver a truly weak schedule to match up with a team that they didn't stand a chance in beating. The last 12 years for Alabama is the greatest run in the history of college football. Alabama has 6 natonal titles since Notre Dame won in 1988, over 40% of people living in the US weren't even born the last time ND won anything of significance. I know this must really sting but this is CURRENT, not 1919 we are talking about. The 22 polled national titles from 100 years ago, you just have to laugh! Also, 1966 shouldn't have been "given" to ND because Alabama was the 2 time defending champion and went undefeated and killed Nebraska in their bowl game. The bias shown Notre Dame in the past was appalling, now people just feel sorry for them. The sportwriter bias is what helped them get the titles that they have, they had help! Now that bias has turned on them, sportwriters don't give them the benefit of the doubt and are very skeptical if they are a quality team. This game helped cement that narrative for years to come!
@Sloan Champion What coach? Brian Kelly doesn’t qualify. This was just the first example of him completely imploding when it counts. Sure, he can beat cupcakes...most of the time and sometimes by not very much, but EVERY time he’s had the opportunity to show the nation that ND is a credible team and nationally relevant again he chokes. Because he has no game plan, doesn’t adjust accordingly, he obviously doesn’t prep his players well enough, he’s not a good motivator, he’s a bad recruiter, he’s better now, but earlier in his career he was an embarrassment to the University due to his purple faced rants, not to mention assaulting his own sideline assistant. Why he’s been there for 10 years is beyond me.

@@Joekidd1961 Alabama backed doored their way in that year.(Well they did against LSU too but Oregon was a 2 loss team and lost to LSU so their was less of an argument for Oregon that year) If Oregon or Kansas St didn't slip up Alabama wouldn't have been in the title game. I'd still argue that Oregon was a better team that year because they were controlling the Stanford game until the end while Alabama had to come back against Texas A&M just to make it respectable.

Bama has destroyed plenty of teams. ND beat the Pac 12 and Big 12 champs that season and beat 9 bowl teams en route to 12-0. Bama has just been a dynasty in this current era. I don't know why people want to trash ND so much that they ignore that this ass whooping had less to do with ND and more to do with Bama. How quickly people forget the multiple beatings Bama has delivered to different programs under Saban. I don't think this natty game discredits ND as much as reaffirms Bama's dominance.
What about bama journey thru the sec that year,The LSU'S , Georgia, Auburn, TEX a&m a good Arkansas that year Penn state a year earlier and tough sec schedule year before.
After watching this several times, it's fun to pick out some of the ridiculous scenes: Cooper's reception to make it 35-0, there's the ND cheerleader arguing with the ref that Cooper stepped out of bounds. 😆
Im a Notre Dame fan, why the hell am I watching this again??? Wow was that bama team stacked. Really wish that TCU had beaten Baylor that year... could have gotten a nice easy NC win as opposed to this destruction. Oh well, glad there is a playoff now!!
+Raymond In the above comment i meant i wish KSU, not TCU, had beaten Baylor that year as I believe that ND was a better team than KSU who would have been in the NC game without the loss to Baylor. I'm sorry for the confusion there. I'm sorry that I wrote in the wrong team by accident. That said Ray... yes if ND had played 7-6 TCU in the NC game in 2012, Im even more confident that ND would have won the NC game (as opposed to playing KSU). The 2012 ND team beat the 2 common opponents that ND and TCU had that year. (Btw TCU lost to those 2 opponents., MSU, OU) I very much doubt that many people would disagree or find laughable that the 2012 ND team that went 12-1 would be heavily favored in a matchup with the "powerhouse" 7-6 2012 TCU team. I think you exposed yourself as a very uninformed football fan with your previous comment and I would assume that your next post will be a retraction of your previous comment and a heartfelt letter promising that next time you comment on college football you will put a disclaimer before your comment that you are in fact a simpleton with a rudimentary at best understanding of american football and that your opinion is for entertainment purposes only and should be viewed with the knowledge that the author is less intelligent than any person who may view the comment... That said Alabama won the NC in 2012 (deservedly so) and needed KSU to lose to get back into the NC picture.
Two of the most tradition-laden football programs in history. I wish it would have been closer. But Alabama was a different breed. They looked giant compared to Notre Dame.
Watching this 8 years later is weird. I was in Gulf Shores AL then and the guys I hung with would have to take ceremonial shots of what ever liquor we had after every Bama score. I was Hammered by the first quarter and on my ass by the time it was all said and done
Back in the day, I heard a lot of fans complain about the kick catch interference call in the first quarter - more from fans of schools who were not in the game. Granted, the head ref said the foul was by #41. #41 was blocked into the Bama fair catch player by a Bama blocker. That caused the muffed catch but it was not a foul. However, Notre Dame player #9 did interfere with the fair catch. Once a fair catch has been called, the kicking team may not have contact with the ball nor the receiving player until the ball touches the ground or another player of the receiving team. Even if muffed, the receiving player still has exclusive right to recover the ball provided it hasn't touched the ground. As soon as the Bama played muffed the catch, ND #9 ran into the Bama player touching both the Bama fair catch and the ball while the ball was still in the air. #9 should have waited until the ball touched the ground. The ref who threw the flag didn't throw it until #9 prevented the the fair catch player from recovering the ball. The head ref never talked to the ref who threw the flag instead assumed the foul was on #41. I don't think the ref who threw the flag was throwing it on #41.
“Maybe Alabama doesn’t come back in the second half..”😂 Notre Dame better hope they don’t play Bama. They might learn again what an actual conference is like.
How could ANYONE have picked Notre Dame going into that game? This game had ass kicking written all over it from the moment it was announced. Maybe Urban and Corso were asked to pick Notre Dame to make people think they had a shot.......cause there's no you pick ND in this game......my only question that night was how bad is Bama gonna win? They literally lined up and shoved it down the Irish throat.
Norte Dame had no reason to be in that stadium.... It should have been Tx A&M. This national championship proved in the most clear and direct manner that the BCS was flawed and needed to go. The average player on the Alabama team was as large or larger than Norte Dame’s largest player. The discipline on the Alabama team was head and shoulders above the Norte Dame teams discipline. This was a beat down of a low level college football program by a high level college football program set up by the BCS.
i hate when GIRLS die! That’s why ND fans were so happy after their team got used like a rag after drunken sex. Because they were soooo good and deserved to be in that stadium.... keep telling yourself that ND will be great again. Beautiful campus at ND BTW, I visited there once, I was shocked at the surrounding city,,, do y’all blindfold your new recruits until they get to the campus?
You can also thank the Pac 12 refs. Them screwing Oregon every year caused these games to happen. If Oregon didn't lose to USC by a field goal they would have likely got a rematch against LSU. If Oregon didn't lose an overtime game to Stanford they would have definitely played Notre Dame because those would have been the only unbeaten teams
The Jones push was the hardest hit McCarron took all night. Notre Dame got to this game on their name and payoffs, talent was sub par at best and they got exposed, embarrassed and humiliated on national tv, be careful what you ask for, lol

A day before this game a news crew was interviewing players from both teams. Reporter to ND player “ how is Miami?” ND player “ wow, it’s been so nice the people the fans, the restaurants just so much fun” Reporter to Alabama player “ how’s Miami?” Alabama player ( looks around with a quirky look) “ we have a game to win, I’ll check out Miami after we win.” I knew that this was going to be a beat down right there, an ugly beat down. ND lost this game before they got on the bus to go to the airport to fly down to Miami.
Two things sealed our fate in this game... The horrible call of incomplete by the officials on the sideline with Eifert securing the catch and the no fumble call on the punt (you can't engage and block the opposing player into the restricted zone of the returner). Wind was knocked out of us from then on.
I'm an Oregon fan and this game depresses me because it should have been Notre Dame vs Oregon. Oregon was 2 games away from being unbeaten and they lost to Stanford in a game which they controlled the whole time. Even with the loss Oregon's loss was similar to Alabama's loss so you could argue that Oregon should have still been in the game.
Looking back at this game though the score was lopsided, ND just played bad. Guys were open and defenders were in the right positions at times but they just didn’t execute. Will be interesting to see this this game again.
I remember my great friend talking to me about this game upcoming and saying idk man Notre Dame has something this year. Bama is good but I think the Irish may take it this year. I was like ummm no. The sec championship was the national championship game. This will be a lopsided victory for Bama.

Wonderful night for Alabama football I grew up watching this rivalry and it was so sweet to beat Notre Dame the way Alabama beat them that night for the National Championship RTR!!!.
Well how about last year after clemson crushed them I love that game big clemson tiger fan
I loved it when Clemson rocked Tide and smashed them right in the face. Bama didn't know what hit em! That was a great night!
I love when Clemson got DESTROYED by Ohio State and Bama came out and DESTROYED them! Great game from the Crimson Tide, RTR

Notre Dame lost this game while standing in the tunnel during pregame...
Friend that wen to the game told me that they held the Bama and ND players at the tunnel while waiting to take the field. The Bama players towered over the ND players.
typical ND over matched, overrated, overconfident ...#1 ? who did they play?, N.E. stickville college?
ND didn't belong there, but typical BCS 'Natty' pre-PlayOffs 'popularity contest'... surprised they didn't have two SECupcakes in there again...

@@cothren6504 - Ohio State would have beaten EbbTide... unlike EbbTide, OSU had -0- losses that season...
@@joeykeenan2079 probably not, in the CFP, ND would likely have been #2 and faced K-State for the first round
The Conference Champs and Notre Dame
Stanford(losses: Notre Dame and Washington)
Florida State(losses: Florida and NC State)

Notre Dame (no losses, key wins: Stanford and Oklahoma)
Oklahoma(losses: Notre Dame and K-State) and Oklahoma State(loss: Baylor)
not Nebraska(lost to Wisconsin, who qualified because OSU and PSU were bowl/CCG-banned

@@americanoperator3147 In light of another overrated Notre Dame team playing Alabama in another CFP game in 2021 this joke deserves new life.
already 40 mins in and this game is already over
I remember this disaster.
That and in the tunnel it looked like Alabama was an NFL team while ND looked like an average college team.
Notre Dame was literally beat the moment Bama walked out of the locker room.

It was over after the national anthem.

I look forward to seeing this again. A overhyped ND team taking on the dynasty
You got your wish yesterday afternoon!
Does this mean if you muffed a punt and an opposing player caught it before it hit the ground that it would be a touchback and not a fumble?
don't you just love when a team isn't doing well they blame it on the layoff....doesn't both teams have a layoff....just a thought

You can also thank the Pac 12 refs. Them screwing Oregon every year caused these games to happen. If Oregon didn't lose to USC by a field goal they would have likely got a rematch against LSU.
