Rodney will always be the #1 comedian of all time. This is the first time I've ever seen The Tonight Show when it was in NYC. I was only 11 in 1971 and couldn't stay up late enough to watch it. It came to Burbank, my home town, in 1972. One evening a friend and I were getting on the freeway and Johnny was in the next lane driving a cream and gold Rolls Royce. Being teenagers we excitedly waved at him, he winked and gave us one of those finger/pistol gestures. I'll never forget that.
Rodney has kept me laughing at some of the lowest times of my life and I can't thank him enough. He's up in heaven keeping God laughing, thank you Rodney.

I love Rodney, but you can tell that during the ten years after this performance how much more polished and funny he'd grown.
Interesting to watch how Mr. Dangerfield's act and accent evolved over the years on the Tonight Show. What a great performer. The audiences loved him more and more as time passed.

Can somebody explain to me, the little joke behind the name Vinnie Boombatz? Every time he mentions the ‘doctors’ name, people start laughing. Is it because he’s about to tell doc jokes? Or is there something behind that name?
Found this, "I think it is safe to say the character is made up with an emphasis on clashing characteristics. Older Guido Italian males are about the last people you would expect to be physicians especially when the character was created. Used car salesman or night club owner would be much more stereotypical but that wouldn’t be any fun."

His wife told him to try on the new suit (that came with a wooden hanger) so she could steal it when he took it off the hanger. Yeah, not that funny, but funnier back then, and right in line with his “no respect” shtick.
@@RSidneyB I love Rodney. But this performance wasn't up to his usual lofty standards. Good jokes require no explanation. That said, Rodney is a true comic legend. RIP
@@zagfan44 I'm not saying it's even close to his best material, but I don't think it's because it needs an explanation. In 1971 everyone got the joke. It's just that it's way less common for people in 2020 to have a closet full of suits and fine clothing. The joke is that the wife confiscated all the nice hangers and left him with the cheap ones.
