THIS IS HOW THE SHOULDERS/TORSO WORK IN THE SWING | Paddy's Golf Tip #6 | Padraig Harrington

  • A common misconception with the backswing is that the shoulders and hips move horizontally. In actuality, the correct motion of the shoulders is more of a pulling motion which leads the hips to turn correctly and sets the torso to open properly in the downswing.

Paddy, i can't thank you enough for these golf lessons chief. As a complete beginner (about 10 rounds on the actual course with lots and lots of hours in the range), I just broke 100 and am having so much fun after nearly giving up completely. I'd read countless books, RUclips videos, online lessons, bought all the training aids, spent hours and hours at the range locking wrists and swinging hips, literally hurting at trying to get the ball up in the air bla bla - only to be completely disheartened at watching the 2 auld guys in front of me on the course smack the ball 30 yards further than me with half the swing and mobility and not a care in the world. It led me to look for someone that cut the crap and would help me find that loose, enjoyable golf swing and sure enough I stumbled across your channel. Watched a few of your tip vids back to back, went to the range the next day and the swoosh and feel of that first iron hit, which went 50 yards further than i'd been able to hit before EFFORTLESSLY, was nothing short of cathartic.
I can't believe you can literally get free golf lessons from a hall of famer on here that turn you in to a great golfer who can hit well and have fun and you dont have a million subcribers. I'd subscribe 1000 times if I could.
God bless ya, thank you so much for helping me relax, enjoy and fall in love with this daft wee game - next time you're in Scotland am owe you a few drams for sure!

Want to learn how to make a golf swing? LEARN FROM A TOURING PRO!!! All the other wannabees on RUclips have no clue on how to actually play golf, they just watch lots of videos and think they know what is happening in the swing. Thank you Padraig for making this information available to us mere mortals!!!!

Everyone else is talking about dropping your arms, holding your right wrist, turning your hips, cover the ball with your chest, shift your weight, etc, when if you just add side bend on the down swing that stuff happens naturally if you have a decent swing.

OK here goes. I am a decent golfer who shoot between mid 70’s to mid 80’s. My abilities were based mainly on compensations and eye hand coordination. I practiced these instructions for a week and a half and finally went on the course with my buddy today. Holy shit!! Is what my buddy said lol. I was on in regulation most holes and hit a couple 195 yards and 175 yards approach shots smack on the green!. My friend asked “what the heck did you do to strike the ball this well”? Lol. And I could always drive the ball better than average, however now I’m getting an extra pop and more hang time, but with distance. Sir your tips helped me so so much and I thank you sincerely. To my fellow average golfers this is what I did. I used Paddy’s grip tip which gave me more club face control, then I followed his shoulder turn instruction to the letter. That hip angle on the backswing is of utmost importance, because once there, your hips will clear NATURALLY on the down swing. I’m still working on a few other of the tips and hopefully will give a follow up when I get them into my system. Hit em straight everyone and be well.

Such an awesome explanation. I have been struggling with my rotation and early extension. After years of lessons and watching videos online this is a game changer. By getting more side bend it makes it much easier for me to transition to my left side and get my body open at impact. Most of the downswing just seems to happen more naturally without thinking about 20 different things. I am hitting it much more consistently now.

I’ve read dozens of golf instruction books and watched hundreds of videos and yours are the best I’ve seen at explaining goals and cause and effect.
For example I’d seen the ‘throw the ball down in front’ drill in a book years ago and do it, but I never made the connect of doing it with the side-bend it creates or more importantly how that side bend done correctly prevents incorrect hip movement, something I always struggled with having learned back when conventional wisdom was illustrated by a guy standing in a wine barrel. This video combined with your one on how to pelvis should move have really connected all the dots for me. Now I understand the goal of the push-pull arm action is to get the hips to turn correctly as you showed in the pelvis video. Understanding that’s the goal makes the cause and effect of the sidebend easier to understand and provides the means for understanding when the hips aren’t turning correctly.
When I first saw you do the ‘push-pull’ motion I thought “That’s just like starting a lawn mower” before you said it. It is also reminded me very much of paddling a white water kayak where the two bladed paddle is pushed with one arm forward while pulling back with the other while also twisting and bending the torso sideways. White water kayaks have rounded bottoms so as you paddle and do the motion with the arms the hips in the seat rock and twist the boat in response to it the upper body action. But I never thought to relate how that worked and felt to my golf swing.

It's such a great advice. I've tried it and have a much better contact with the ball. I tend to hit it right though, when doing so.
