- Curtailing the follow-through in the swing, creates feeling of deceleration through impact which allows the clubhead to accelerate and release. This can result in a better strike for the player.

Every Padraig Harrington video released is so valuable.
Thank you!
Great video! Clear to the point, no unnecessary talk. Just pure informative instructions. I've been watching you nightly. Thank you. It's really helping.
the sign of a good instructor NOT only give the instruction BUT more importantly explain what not to do and why so the outcome is CLEAR . first time here GOOD JOB Paddy !!!!!!
This is terrific! I wondered why most pros are restricting the arm follow-through and you explained it so well! And i spent so many years working on getting that shaft angled across my back........hahaha. jokes on me yet again. Thanks Paddy
Probably also a drill for them to control trajectory of the ball, since many tour pros tend to hit the ball higher than they want.
@@jimiverson3085 maybe
If I remember correctly, one of Paddy's drills for this is to hit a smash bag all over the yard, with his kids chasing.
Fantastic advice and you can’t argue with the longest and strongest guy on the senior tour. Thx Padraig!
Good to see another new video! Thank you Padraig
This is a fantastic drill that would help anyone struggling with crisp contact. Thank you sir.
Excellent tip Paddy
This here is GOLD.
These are so straightforward and easy to understand Paddy. Thank you for this wonderful content.
This is perfect for me. I have been having issues releasing. I think my body is doing what it needs to do but hands holding on and pushing everything high right. Thanks for the content. Love you how explain it.
Great videos finally a teacher who you can really trust!!! The one about posture has helped me quite immensely, thank you I’m a lot more comfortable over the ball, you mentioned the one piece takeaway I was wondering if you could go in a little more detail with that? I think that would be a great idea for a video
My 2nd comment on the same vid- it’s that good! Tried this and went around the course 9 over, my best score ever! Game-changer 🎉
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the game Padraig. Brilliant series.
My pleasure!
@@PadraigHarringtonOfficial opinion on wrist pop putting like Brent snedeker? Should amateur go with conventional?
I like the way you have a bit more weight on your left side throughout your golf swing to allow a more flued hip turn going back. Less strain on your body also.... 👌
Wonderful stuff Paddy! Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!
By the way, love your training tips.
Man, I need to hire this guy to be my coach 😅
Happy new year Paddy!
Same to you!
Great video. Tommy Fleetwood is a good example of someone who does this in play !
Yes! This drill is fantastic. It forces you to use the body efficiently and is much more indicative of the modern golf swing.
well, the key is turn the right clavicle thru in the hitting area; which you do perfectly. helps a player to hit little half shots, with a long iron, or rescue club, to build the movement into the swing. it's actually great fun. puts a fade on the ball and you can actually see the ball check on the second or third bounce.
Great video , can you give any tips on how to stop the drive drifting right . Not a big slice just a drift I’d call it
This is such a difficult feel to explain. I understand roughly what Padraig is saying....but it could mess up the average golfer?
Releasing is the key...
Thank you patty, really enjoy your no nonsense yet clear explanations. One of the true pros that really loves playing and teaching golf in my own opinion. 🙏🏼🏌️♂️⛳️
I'd give anything to be able to hit the ball like he does at 1:18
It’s called parametric acceleration
"Stop the club head"
I think a better thought is to *stop the arms* (with completely relaxed wrists).
At least that's what works for me :)
Paddy, I'm watching you play, now, at the HSBC. Currently -16 tied for third! Nice playing! Thanks for taking time to help the rest of us with your great tips. Much appreciated!
The physics of a golf swing are similar to Trebuchet in which a rock in a sling whips around a primary lever powered by gravity. What triggers the downward release of the lead arm mass and the whipping of the club head mass around the hands is the momentary slowing down of the hip turn by virtue of the trail foot staying grounded. With both feet grounded hips can only turn open 45°. With shoulders lagging 45° behind hips in the downswing the shoulders turn back parallel and club shaft horizontal at the same time triggering the lead arm to accelerate faster than the shoulder turn and the club head to whip even faster around the hands so much the shaft bends forward ( as club head out races the hands to the point of snapping the heads off at the top of the hosel if the back foot isn’t lifted to get hips, shoulders and hands moving again.
The feeling in the downswing has been described as hitting then breaking through a wall with the hips. I never experienced it as a beginner because I would lift up my back foot and turn it too soon before ever feeling the torque from the lateral shift and rotation of the lead leg inhibit the the hip turn. A good drill to understand how it works is to put the trail hand down the shaft below the grip when swinging it which will prevent it from releasing until let go. Not letting go helps break the reflexive habit of lifting the back foot too soon. You’ll feel stuck as lead hand passes trail leg because the trail foot stays down, until you release the club in the trail hand. That causes the club head to whip around the hands and that action triggers the correct timing of lifting the back foot to allow the hips and shoulders to rotate into the finish.
So is my trail heel meant to stay down until the ball is hit? I always have a tendency to lift it way too early and trying to fire the hips. I don't hit it very far so maybe I will try to keep my trail heel planted for longer. I noticed Rory's hips stall just before he releases. I guess this is the effect you are talking about?
@@method341 The timing of the release of the back foot needs to be coordinated with release of the club around the hands. I separate my index “trigger” finger of my trail hand from the others and rest it down the side of the shaft, using it for feedback for how the club head mass is lagging, or in the downswing trying to raise ahead of the hands to the point the shaft bows forward towards the target and the head snaps off the club, which I’ve done several times experimenting with my timing. Now when I feel the lag pressure release off the trigger finger it is my reflexive cue to lift the foot to release and speed up the hip and shoulders.
A good way to practice is using 1/4 swings. As the club swings back slide your trail hand down the shaft a foot or so the club can’t release the club around the hands and keep your back foot down in the downswing. You will definitely feel the hip get stuck that way and the club really want to whip around the hands. Let go with your trail hand and let it release down to the ground. That point of feeling stuck is where you need to start lifting your trail heel. But don’t lift it too fast or turn it on the toe too soon, why you want to do the drill starting with only 1/4 swings. The downswing of the arm will be slow but the slower it is and the more it gets “stuck” by the restricted hip turn the more it will accelerate around the hands. When you get the mechanic automatic pay attention to the pressure in the trigger finger while it occurs.
Absolute legend. And humble enough to give out free lessons on RUclips that i dont see any other pros doing. This channel and one other channel has absolutely turned my golf game back into fun+enjoyment instead of frustration. Its 100% appreciated. Thank you paddy
What's the other channel?
Can you explain this? Does he want us to do both arms straight at impact?
Hi from Old Blighty Padraig. Thanks so much for taking time out of your schedule to help us amateurs. Another great video. Good luck on the Tour for 2023.
I've caddied for Graeme McDowell at my club a few times in outings and he would refer to Paddy's swing concepts/technique with the guests. Paddy's depth of knowledge is extraordinary.
Mr Harrington, Happy New Year!
May 2023 brings success, happiness and good health to you and family.
Thank you for these wonderful lessons.
Padraig, curtailing the follow-through is actually done by the majority of professional tennis players as well on their two hand backhands. From personal experience (reached the Division 1 level) this allows tennis players to increase accuracy, and as you have so eloquently stated, actually also increases clubhead speed. Not a surprise, I naturally carried this over to my golf game and experienced the same result/feeling, but is much more impactful. After all, the club is obviously much longer and weighted at the head than a racket.
The tennis serve is also similar in that as the arm slows down (and pronating up high) the racquet head comes whipping through.
tell me how to hit a golf ball, without telling me how to hit a golf ball. LOL
Wow Paddy is kicking butt on the tour and still has time to help us golfing chumps!
Throwing with which hand Paddy ✋️?
"The best iron players throw the club a little bit." That's a lot to unpack... Feel like you're stopping at impact. So are you just trying to convey that you want to brace up the left side and allow the right side to release around the braced left side while allowing the club head to release normally? I'm sorry I'm having trouble following what you're trying to say here
Isn't the "stopping of the body" really the pulling of the butt end of the club head from the 1 o'clock (shaft parallel) position to 10 o'clock (club head impact) position that creates this sudden acceleration? That massive sudden change of direction. The body wrenches the shaft around, the right side drops into the shaft at impact and the club head goes 3 feet while the butt of the grip goes 6 inches.
I have been watching Lydia Ko play she seems to use that type of action a lot, well I think its the same thing, however its something I am going to try. Thanks for the clear explanation.
Tommy Fleetwood plays most of his shots like this
Padraig’s tips since covid hitting have been fantastic.
Short, concise and informative videos from someone who has won at the highest level.
I do this naturally lol without even meaning/trying to
"Throw the club through impact" brilliant. I always steer and hold off thinking it is a safer swing, lot of low and pulled shots as a result. Thanks Pod
Body swing and not an arm swing.
Hi Paddy could you do a video on how to line the ball up putting and how to aim the putter probably 👍thanks
How good is it not being asked to click or subscribe? Thanks Paddy.
The Champion Golfer of The Year, is an even greater Champion as an Instructor. This really breaks down why the Pros hit the ball so much further than Amateurs. It's effortless, because everything they do is flawless. Including the intentional deceleration of the club!! Paddy should put out a tip every two days!! Just a simple to follow series of instant game changers. As good as any instructor in the world.
Another great video paddy , thanks 👍👍any chance on doing a video on shanking irons . I’m a scratch golfer who seems to slip one in a round . Recently hitting my irons out the heel
あけましておめでとうございます Paddy !
I have a neutral grip but have so much trouble bowing my lead wrist in the downswing. My friend plays off scratch with a weak grip and he said if I don't bow that lead wrist with a neutral grip, I will slice it. But how do I do it? It feels so awkward trying to force it to bow.
I love your energy and honesty and enthusiasm for teaching Paddy. Few playing pros can teach, but you've broken down the fundamentals so clearly. Keep it up!
One problem I have had in the past with this: hitting a ton of 3/4 shots and then it becoming a permanent swing which is very hard to get out of. It took me forever to get a full follow through and hit a high ball again when I needed to.
It works pretty well for Tommy Fleetwood
Yes. He needs more club head speed to employ this drill and use it on the course to hit high shots.Basically if your technique is correct the only way to hit it higher without adding loft to the clubhead is to get in better physical condition.
3:50 is just fascinating. I love how Paddy cares so deeply about ensuring that the ball is right behind the previous divot and to keep a consistent divot pattern
I used to live next to a county golf course. I could sneak on in the evening with a bag of balls and not leave a mark. I played a few times with a former college player and he took a divot every swing. I learned at a range and all those swings on carpet over cement taught me to clip the ball clean and not touch the carpet/cement. So I recommend people learning to do on grass and not carpet over cement, and take divots.
Excellent tip! Does it work with the driver?
Thanks for doing this video series. A top tour player's insights remind me how amazing the game is. I'm a senior who doesn't even keep score any more.
Thanks Paddy. Play well.
Thanks a lot PH. I wonder if you need to use right arm, hand to match the club face and target line? Or it just happens naturally?
Can you please do a video on fairway woods/metals? Thank you for such pure content!
Dunno .... I love the release of Tommy Fleetwood. Seems the best way to compress the ball.
Yeh ! Coach Mike bender does the cupped wrist technique,,I tried that and couldn’t get on with that .I understand about breaking down each part of the swing ,I just think that exaggerating that cupped wrist is too hard for me , I always like the thought of flipping the hands ,wrists in the downswing as opposed to smacking the ground with the Mike bender technique.
Thanks for the video! I’m going to try this because I do hold on and flip (drives me nuts). Keep them coming.
Excellent Paddy. So many won't understand this because they have been fed a constant diet of RUclips myths: forward shaft lean, holding the club face square, compression (whatever that is), delayed release etc. As you say, the hands have to release as the forces are huge, what you are teaching here is what I would describe as "restricted arm release". Club golfers need to be careful not to "chicken wing" when practicing this. I would not recommend that you overdo it yourself, it might mess up your rhythm as it can work back and affect your downswing.
What he is showing is a rotational golf swing which actually still incorporates the concepts of forward shaft lean and compression. Paddy does achieve those principles as do all tour players so they’re not myths.
@@yodaman4674 thank you. Of course all good golfers have hands slightly ahead of the club at impact. The faster the shoulders turn through impact coupled with extra spine tilt, the more "shaft lean" you will have. And the more back problems you will have (Will Zalatoris and me 40 years ago). The myth is that the average club golfer can produce this by "leading with the hands" or some other ludicrous concept taught by RUclips pros who can't do it themselves.
The club head collides with the stationary ball and follows basic laws of physics. The ball compresses onto the club face. The myth here is that the golfer can somehow "compress" the ball further by putting some extra force into impact though no-one can explain it. All studies are clear - the club head acts as if it was unconnected to the hands through impact. It follows laws of momentum, slowing at impact from, say 120mph to about 70mph while the ball leaves at about 180mph for top golfers.
You mention "rotational swing". I thought all swings involve rotation, they are swings. Also, what is "compression"?
@@oldprogolf7292 golf is all about a good "M Line" Scott Cowx
@@tigertim9232 had a look at that but have not been well recently so all that talk of flexion, deviation, ulnar, radial had me searching for my radial artery with a sharp knife so I had to turn it off.🙂 Scott is a very good salesman but that is not what golf is about.
@@oldprogolf7292 Forward shaft lean happens when you accelerate the hands towards the impact area instead of at the top of the swing or before the impact area. Both the latter will cause a flipped release and casting. It’s not the strength of the rotation or release but the timing of it. All people of any strength or size and learn to do this right. Releasing the club and the right time and place creates a flat part of the swing through impact. This flat part is what allows to club to move through the ball in a straight line therefore compressing the ball. It also gives more room for error thereby giving consistency. So by releasing the club at the right time you gain power and consistency.
Watch the Hit hard, stop quick drill which Rob Cheney talks about. Brilliant drill for this
Fantastic tuition from the ‘club golfer’s champion’ , really hoping you hit a good bit of form for the majors and add to your tally !!
that make sense now watching Moe Norman
What a super tip. Tried this on the range today and I could hear the ball fizz through the air. Was great with the irons. Does this work with fairway woods and driver? I struggled a bit with longer clubs. Any adjustments for the longer clubs?
Me too. Struggle with the 3,4,5 irons using this
Couple ah tings ta watch fer! 😀
top of the year to you Sir...great info as always...
This was a wonderful video! On a separate topic, could you provide a video showing. examples of practice drills with your driver? I love your drills for chipping. Thank you
At 5:55: from last parallel to impact, you make a brilliant statement to go from bowed to less bowed which I am assuming is your lead or left wrist. You also say in the video to have a fully cupped wrist at the follow through which I again assume is your left or lead wrist. I understand the bowed wrist for a short iron shot like a 7iron but wondering if you need that bowed lead wrist for a bunker shot, flop shot, long iron, woods and driver. I love your bowed to less bowed idea there as that is definitely helping me with releasing the clubhead and getting my torso and pelvis fully turned at the finish. Trying to learn if I can go neutral to slightly cupped or slightly cupped to more cupped with the longer clubs or if it has to always be bowed to less bowed as you state. Thank you!
Happy New year from a fellow Irishman now living in Florida!!!!
Thanks for your videos, we enjoy them very much!
Hi Padraig! I would love to see a video about shallowing the club. After watching your golf tip #24 video, I have been striking the ball the best I ever have, but I am still slightly over the top. Thanks so much!
Tiger also says he throws it and controls his swing with his right hand.
Oh Bless Ya Paddy, we all hope you have a great year and your wishes come true. Thanks for your video's, its all about giving, every bit helps and keeps the game interesting.
No other way to transfer energy/clubhead speed to the clubhead! Acceleration-deceleration =transfer👍🏼🙌
Thanks Paddy, Great job in the PNC by the way
I came across trying to stop the club head by accident. Once I realized this, I played some good golf.
Love your tips and teaching methods tyy
Is this method suitable for driver swing or does it work best for irons?
Happy New year 🎉 Paddy and thanks for all the good golf information it is indeed very useful to myself and my golf students. ⛳️
0:47 Garcia's face
In a nutshell you want your club/shaft to be 'forward loaded' at impact ie the club face is past the shaft at impact = true release, some ppl will have trouble understanding this.
So helpful
Great tip Paddy, thank you.
This is the best tip for the golfer who's not able to shift theirs weight in follow-through
I always benefit from your videos! Thanks.
What paddy is trying to say: Lag in the golf swing. Create it and it’s the Holy Grail in the swing.
Tommy Fleetwood swings like that all the time It started off doing it for a drill to sync his body up but then he just kept doing it
Paddy. Are you saying to " Stick the Finish " ??????
Looks like Tommy Fleetwoods regular swing.
I would like to see some slow motion to better see what you’re talking about
Play my best iron shots with this swing but struggled to change my iron swing to a full driver swing so went bk to my inconsistent golf haha
Use your iron swing for all the clubs but a five wood off the tee. For me Five great club for keeping swing the same.
@@Tereyoc thanks, I would be off scratch if I could get that through my thick skull haha , but I love a driver too much. I do have a 5 wood bought a new g425 maybe this is the Ur to keep a driver out my bag
@@mikepinder9953I'm certainly no expert and probably you have a better handicap. but yeah sure maybe just practice with the driver, and use the five wood playing. A good five wood and a decent 4 5 6 iron, you should fairly close to most par 4s. Chip for birdie Putt for par
Gets my vote for the number 1 "tip" on golf internet land.

Didnt PH go from an assistant pro playing off a 5 to pro in a few years?? Best teachers are the ones who sucked at some point and figured it out. Anyone who does all this naturally prob doesnt really know what theyre doing.
Yep, everyone who has ever played golf sucked at some point. The knowledge Padraig shares is great. His explainations and gems hidden between the lines are gold 🪙
