Troubleshooting and Fixing a 1986 "Franken" Spree Honda Scooter that Won’t Start or Run Consistently
This “Franken” Spree is made up of various parts put together on a 1986 frame and it never ran right. Hard starting, poor idle, bad restarts, everything. It really felt like a fuel/carb issue, but in the end, that wasn’t the problem at all.
In this video I show you one thing to look for that can be a tell tale sign of where the problem is.

Suzuki LT-80 Starters (use for parts): amzn.to/2IMVULD

I now have 5 of these Honda Spree scooters and will be restoring them and making short videos about how to rebuild components like the electric starters, the carburetors, etc.

Here’s how to bbq your muffler:

Thanks for the tip!
Exhaust is there last thing people tend to think about. But it’s impacted me twice now! These 30 year old pipes can really be plugged up!
@@ApacheRanch I believe you cook them over a fire, right? Lucky mine isn't plugged!
Yeah I done the bbq a few times. But some of them don’t seem to ever get better.
I have a 1986 spree and just ordered a new carb. Can we get a tutorial on how to replace?
I have one on my channel. Just look for the Spree playlist.
Here’s one:

Hey! thank you so much for making these informative videos on how to fix up the sprees. When mine starts it seems to idle very high. is it normal because it is cold?
Be very happy that it starts! Lol. After it warms up, what does your idle look like?
@@ApacheRanch after it warms up and i ride it for a bit it idles better. but when its cold it starts accelerating by itself as if it wants to take off lol
Likely it does this based on the function of your bystarter (automatic choke).
okay it wont start again the plug fauled out and it was shooting flames and alot of gas out the end now i have a new plug and it pops i dont have the muffler on and i think its still getting to much gas but its on the top pin setting any suggestions also the kickstart broke so i cant really kick it over atm
Is the starter free wheeling normal ??
On these old machines that bendix will sometimes disengage and you that hear that spinning sound.
mine has spark compression and is getting gas i took the muffler off and sometiems it startas at full throttle but just bogs down i tryed changing the needle seating and tuning the carb nothing works anysuggestions
Probably a dirty carb. Do a full cleaning and possibly test with a new Chinese replacement carb. I wish you the best.
@@ApacheRanch its a brand new carb and i cleaned it throughly with a wire brush and brake cleaner
@@ApacheRanch i gotr it to run spark plug needed cleaned
@@canttell5554 that’s great to hear! Glad you found it! Thanks for your comment - I’m sure it will help someone else as well!
Hey i have a question on these sprees 1985-1987 is a premix required on these every time you refuel it or does the oil tank do the job automatically meaning you don’t have to pour anything in the fuel tank?
Oil tank does it. You don't need to mix. There is an oil injector pump that pulls down oil from the tank, and injects that oil into the intake to the engine. Some people do not trust this oil injector pump, and they choose to mix their own oil. I have 5 Sprees and the oil injector pumps have always worked for me. I never mix fuel. I wish you the best!
@@ApacheRanch Oh I see some People just do it even when it works I bet that seems to be a good benefit
@@xaviersland996 If you are using a working oil injector pump, and you are premixing the fuel, then you are just adding too much oil to the mix really. It won't really hurt anything other than a greasy spark plug maybe. But you don't need to do both. Best regards!
