Very helpful tutorial. I love Bob Ross. He introduced me to painting. Then I found a local class. I showed up with my giant brushes & actually thought I was introducing my instructor to a new way to paint. Lol Fortunately for me, I fell in love with oil painting & soaked up everything I could find. I read books, took classes but mostly I practiced. The more I learn about it, the more I realize there is to learn. Thank you for sharing a great lesson.
Thank you! I liked Bob also. Some people get really upset when I poke a little fun about him but he did inspire a lot of artists, myself included when I was a kid.
Hahahaha, I am a beginner who just started on and off for a month. And you are spot on I made almost all the mistakes you mentioned 😂😂 (well except the sky I just know it isn’t straight blue it is more white than blue) I am not ashamed of myself though, I noticed I made these mistakes and then I go around to look for ways to fix it and I found your channel! Quite wanted to give this another go although my technique might be hindering me from repeating what I see here. But at the end it’s about trying and practicing right!
Amen!! Nobody gets it correct the first time. I made these exact mistakes many, many times myself, which is why I was able to do the bad painting (just repeated my own mistakes). Keep going!!
I like your tree . I’ve been painting for 23 years and familiar with everything else I understand you’re teaching and I like your style. And believe me after 23 years you can still screw things up! It is very hard for a beginner to wrap his head around all the things involved in painting. Just keep going, right! Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it and watching for more.
Am so happy I found you. Am 80 yrs old with cognitive issues. Had giving up up painting for several years due to trimmers. Have watched all day. Had been thinking was like the Bob Ross's work years ago. Just now heard Bob's name. Ha! So hope can find you over & over! Thank you very much! Smiles!
I've been an artist now for about 1 year. that bad example genuinely looks like some of my paintings. I like that you keep things simple and focused on the quintessential lesson, and I really learned something very important today, and will try to apply those things the next time I grab a brush. And yes, I am in love with my fan brush :D Thank you very much, greetings from good ol' germany
I teach two days a week and have yet to see anything like you are showing and yes I do use some of the Ross and Bill Alexander, just to get them started and have some fun, so far they have done a pretty good job and had lots of fun and a learning experience at the same time.
Thank you!! I poke a little fun at Bob as do a number of other professional artists. But he was a really nice and generous guy (with a cool hairdo). His approach is great for beginners and inspiring people who want to get a painting done quick. I always say that you can start with Bob but you shouldn't end with Bob; if you are serious about landscape painting that is. Thanks for watching!
Jason - best tree video I've seen. I've been practicing our steps and I'm happy how the trees are turning out. Hey you sound like where I'm from - back in Minnesota.
Thanks James! Yes, I'm a Minnesota native. Love my home state of mosquitos and lakes, but don't miss everything being made from cream of mushroom soup.
Ha!... your video just fixed a huge problem... i was getting the tones wrong between air land and tree... and your lesson was just the fix i needed. Thank you Sir.
Great pts about values & color saturation, adding the sky holes made the tree look much more realistic, it was too solid in its form; trees need to breathe, let the wind pass through. Thanks for educ. vid!
Great video and info... first video of yours I've seen... I too, grew up with Bob ross... and the amount of innocent and on point shh. It talking you did was had me crackin up! I hope you're still making content like this because you have a new subscriber right here!
You had me laughing so hard I had tears! I'm going to paint my tree green! Ha! I'm not knocking Bob R.either - I saw my first show in July and he did inspire me to paint. But, by August I knew I wasn't really learning to paint. I would always have to use his technique and I wouldn't grow. So thanks again for another great video! Now I'm learning to paint correctly. No more knock your socks off blue skies! Ha!
It took me 7 wasted years of stubbornly trying to just learn by doing on my own... got literally nowhere and if anything was getting worse... Until I watched a few RUclips channels and tutorials .. now, in just the last few months I've improved SOOOO much and learned SOOOO much more than ever would have on my own. The channels that helped me the most are M Stewart Painting, Stay Creative With Ryan O'Rourke and colors by Felix.. with Felix.
Clear and succinct principles. I have often ie all the time used a touch of red to neutralise/dull greens but I'll try burnt sienna as I can see how it would also help overall colour harmony if you're using burnt sienna in other parts of the painting.
Hey Jason, you were right! This IS super helpful! I'm going to slow down the playback speed and pause if I need to so that I can try painting the tree along with you . Your comment about the BR estate suing you cracked me up :). You say in the video there's more that you could have done on the shadow side and I wonder if you meant painting the sky reflecting on parts of the shadowed foliage... I'll see if I can figure it out. ANYway, THANKS SO MUCH for suggesting I watch this! It's REALLY great!
Hi Roxanne, so glad this helped! Yes, with the shadow side I could have added some ever-so-slightly lighter, cooler values. But you have to be careful so as to not destroy the value structure that is already established. Many fine trees can be painted without this, and if the trees are small in the landscape (or if I'm just doing a quick sketch/demo) I may just leave those values out. However, if the tree is the main subject matter and I have the time, I will most likely try to add them in for increased interest.
Regarding soft edges..vs hard edges. Can you please mention the most appropriate brushes ? Thank you. And best brush for sky, plus thickness of paint. We don’t want a lumpy sky.
Warning! Please ensure you don’t have video muted when watching first part or you might think Jason’s talent is somewhat limited! I think he’s enjoying doing initial painting waaaay too much!! Seriously good tutorial though. Thank you Jason!
Hi Jason, I was wondering about distant trees (trees in the background). As you go back, the values get closer. When you said to make sure that the value of the trees are darker than the ground and sky, you meant only trees in the foreground, right? That doesn't apply to middle and background?
Yes it does also apply to the middle and background as well. There are always caveats, such as dark stromy skies, yellow autumn leaves, etc. But in most cases you need to key in the sky with the rest of the landscape, which means that the sky is usually a lot lighter in value than what most people think.
I think you missed the point. This is not meant to be a finished painting, but merely to explain the concepts one should be aware of when painting trees.
Sorry I replied too quickly. However, I think that mentioning the light source ...would have added structure to your video at little cost. Ignore the focal point comment.
@@davidsmith-ln2de That is a good consideration. But the angles and consequent values concept that Carlson talks about applies in most lighting, whether it's front or backlit, overcast or sunny.
