- Inspiring Millions to paint outdoors This video is about Touch Move and Inspire. Get a free Book at his website www.StefanBaumann.com. The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

I'll never look at a tree the same way again. Thank you.
Very nice.
It had never occurred to me to paint trees this way! What a different way to approach this! I can clearly see how painting a tree this way establishes the shape of the tree as foremost important, then the branches, and the trunk becomes self apparent. I also appreciate the really interesting shapes that can be developed from this approach. As always, you are a phenomenal teacher, coach, human being, and a true gift to the entire art world. Your generosity is unrivaled. You are blessed and in this blessing, the blessings pour from you to everyone who encounters you. Giant hug and thank you for your beautiful gifts!! You are loved very dearly by so many!
Nor have I realized painting the tree first. I might try it.
I usually use oil paint. How well would that work?
😅😅w fl
I learned so many things from this tutorial. I've been painting for years and it's great to listen to a professional artist not only show "how" to paint trees but also hear the "why" behind all the subtle techniques you employ. I liked your explanations of values as they relate to the overall makeup of the painting. I liked how you kept the highlights away from the edges to keep a good degree of contrast in the value of the tree against the light value of the sky. That's a kind of contrast you get in real life when you're out on bright sunlit days in a place like Yosemite. I spent many days in the park and there is an intensity of light in the valley that is a combination of clean air and thin higher elevation air that just make skies snap. I guess the thinner air reduces the normal effects of "atmospheric perspective". Anyway, great demo, I learned a lot from it.
I have struggled with trees forever!!! Sky holes (bird holes) have stumped me but now I can do it thanks to this video. I went into my studio and redid a painting and boom, transformed!!! I don't know if you're up for a palm tree demo but that would really help me. AND thank you for helping me understand what that dang fan brush can do. Bob Ross was a marvel but all I ever say it used for were arches and they never looked right. Many thanks!!!
You went into your studio and changed MY world. As you started, I was squinting at you and POW my eyes flew open never to squint again!!! ❤
Thank you Stefan. You are generous with your insight!
Love painting masses and using negative space!
That's how I roll...sky last lol. Also was told during a spirit board session (that I did not fully participate in) that I was Manet in a past life. That explains a lot🤣
Hi Stefan 🙂. Thank you so much for you showing the fantastic method. Regards 🙂
Brilliant!❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have watched ur videos for yrs… Ive always enjoyed ur teaching 💜
But this new series of yours is absolutely awesome 😎
Thank u so much 😇😇😇
Very informative video. I've seen some of your other videos. I like what you do...but I liked watching Bob Ross too. Ross opened up the world of painting for the every day 'Joe' and encouraged them to tap into the creative part of themselves. I learn something new from every artist's tutorial I watch. Thank you to all artists willing to share your knowledge.
This is so cool and easy (looking) thanks ! And now I want a leather vest too !
Very good teaching! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your great knowledge, we are very blessed to have the wisdom of your skills.
You are very welcome
I think you have a respect for trees, nature, sky as equel. So do I. Thank you!
Awesome info. I can’t wait to learn from you. Blessings!
Nice to see the hows of things. Type of product and the know how makes so much difference!
Thanks so much, Stefan! Loved this.
I am so happy I came to see this video by chance.I never knew this shape and way of painting a tree.
Welcome to my station
Extremely helpful. Thanks!
Absolutely Beautiful, Thank you for sharing this information helped a lot. great video!
Thank You for your professional tutorial. I have learned so much about trees. The painting is so different than what l am used to👍👍
Lovely. I love trees.
That's a very neat and effective way of painting sky holes and depicting trunks and branches painting negative shapes, more effective than trying to paint stroke them. I always paint the sky around in any subject but my trees always look stuck on as an afterthought, ah ha I've learned something . Cheers.
I just found a new artist to watch on RUclips.
Wow everything in once😍
Really good teacher! Easy to understand, generous with his knowledge. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words
Ty for taking y
The time for sharing your talent...you are a true artist,ty...connie
You are so welcome
well! if this is my reward for surviving 2020, I call that a win! :) thank you this is gold!
Wow! Thanks! I love the bird holes! Can't wait to try your technique!
Have fun!
I will be trying this technique today! Do U have a FB group?
If you join my Patreon group I do
👌Wow i love Painting 👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Art is my Life!!! 🎨💕😍🥰❤️When I was 6 years old I started sketching.🎨
That is awesome!
I'm still relatively new to all this and learning how to create the shapes of the trunk & branches using the sky/bird holes gives me a way to look deeper into my painting & particularly into the beauty & essence of the tree itself and I truly cannot wait to try out this method as I have a great love for trees and have not been satisfied with my renditions to this point. I'm also hoping it will help correct the trees in my rendition of Monet's Magpie that I painted.
Thank you, graciously for your time and wonderful talent. Kat ⚘💕🐞
Let me know how they turn out
Really great that Stefan, Thank you x
You're very welcome
This is phenomenal. So happy The Baumann Effect was created. Have watched every one. You are an incredible artist and teacher. Negative drawing or painting in this instance really is the bomb. Its like a shift. A different way of seeing. Thank You and God Bless you.
thanks for the kind words
PL lol
I learned today! Thank you! Well done!!!
Utilization of visualizing through negative space....I've attempted this long before ever understanding what was taking place, it was at a time when I had little familiarity with the unintended traits of different mediums. I love watercolor because but unless I spend a lot of time with some form of masking gum, I've not been able to steer away from overworking such techniques with watercolors.
Any way I enjoy your teaching style, with no formal training ( I'm ever the autodidact) the ability of the accomplished to guide as well as you is a gift. Thank you sir.
When to add the sky very much depends on the medium. I generally start with the sky when I’m working in watercolour, and even acrylic, but last when using oil.
Thanks for sharing!
OH WOW! Totally amazing! Great teaching!
Glad you liked it!
This is fabulous
Counterintuitive. I like it!
Absolutely enjoyed watching your process. Love your teaching.
Thank you so much!
I love your videos! I learned so much from watching them!
Loved this video. It was so well done and visual, a huge help and great method of working on trees. To have a teacher this hands on and in touch with nature is a blessing. It’s also shown that even a big burly man has a soft delicate artistic side and this view of the world comes from within our very spirit. So much personality goes into these lessons which are packed with rich nuggets of value. Thank you for doing these Stefan and sharing what you know with the world. I loved Bob Ross too, but you are indeed unique in your approach to art and natural beauty.
Your my new best friend.
Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Great demo!
amazing video thanks for the training.
Thanks for the kind words, if you think that is good Run and get my book www.StefanBaumann.com Everything I know and teach is in The Ultimate Plein Air Painting Book
I love your teaching method, So positive and low key. You taught us to take a different perspective on the tree subject in such a unique way. So, uhmmmm I feel like going back to 2 years worth of my paintings and redoing the trees. 😮😖😂
Try it its not the only way but if you can better your trees the world would be a better place
Super nice, thanks
Watched this video a second time! I watched it the first time maybe a year ago... I'm not sure I consciously think about the techniques shown here, but I have noticed them appear in my own work... sky holes, thinking about branches following up and out patterns according to the seasons, lighting etc.
After a second watch, some of the subtler points make more sense, such as the color theory.
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
Thanks for the kind words, I made it just for you.....
I am following you doing this painting. Very pleased with your style and directions on “how” so helpful. Hope I can keep up😊

thankyou great teacher
Interesting..mom paints with oils...I use watercolor..a different beast for sure. Great information and observations regardless.
Thank you.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks!
Im Glad I could be of help, stay in touch
Thank you so much 🌻🌻🌻
You are so welcome
I found this very informative and helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips! Subbed!
Appreciate your mention of Ross; why? Originality is what art should be about, and striving for something that's more unique, that hasn't been done before, in composition and colours.
I learnt more from this than 3 or 4 of his classes. 😅😅😄😉🤔
Just stumbled across your Chanel👍🏼 I’m so glad I did because you have a wonderful way of explaining the art of using oils in a way that I have not seen before. Thank you for sharing this I really enjoyed it🥰 watching from Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 👍🏼
I have many phone coaching students from Australia, so welcome to my station have a cup of coffee and sit back it's going to be an informative day
Thank you very much😁
very nice tutorial.....
If an art student or even a child painter started a tree as a clump of the same colour and a trunk, they’d probably be corrected by their art teacher.
The good thing about doing it this way is that seems to take longer, but what’s the hurry?.
I paint to relax as I make mistakes if I hurry and have to do corrections.
Once Stefan added the highlights the tree came alive.
I enjoyed this demo. Thank you. The reminders that bird holes are a bit darker, to soften the edges away from branches, the idea to use auto primer, the recommendation about brushes finding the tip… so many great jewels.
Glad it was helpful!
YES!!!!
Awesome! U teach very well. I got schooled so much on just this 1 video. (Tutorial).
Glad to hear that!
I would of liked to of seen the finished tree!
I just love you.
Hebat seni lukisnya, sy kagum.
I love, love your little ‘secret ways’ of making trees with bird holes! Do you work in other mediums….would
this work with water colours…doubt it huh? You explain things very well..thanx!
Having used the Bob Ross/Bill Alexander style of painting since 1982, I have to say that it is much easier to do than what you did. You can paint in the bird/sky holes as you go. You can leave missing limbs on pine trees as you go as well. It is just a different style of painting. Since the sky gets lighter as it nears the horizon, you don't see much difference in color shift when you paint over it. Generally the skies in my paintings are multi-colored, and trying to cut that into a darker shape just won't work. My trees usually have a dark a medium and a lighter color on each one. It gives them depth, and sky holes if you want them. Also you can almost indicate individual leaves using our method. The difference I see is that your style is more "impressionist"...where as my method tends to be more realistic. One drawback to our method is an abundance of paint if you are not careful. Then it can turn to mud. However the paint is very thick and you can thin other paints to go over them and it works very well.
If you are into EZ then watch Bob Ross but if you want to make better paintings then watch other artists that have mastered their craft also.
@@StefanBaumann ...Yes sir, I totally agree that I don't know everything, and could learn a lot from other artists. I think that applies to everybody. My point was that in certain cases, my way is better than yours. When doing a sunset sky where multi colors are used and blended into each other... trying to cut them into the middle of a big tree is an impossible task to make it look like it wasn't cut in. Mountains with details fall into that same category. Yes your way works great when the background is a solid color with no details in it. Again I say that we are comparing two different styles of painting. So there are bound to be things that don't work as well for one style as it does for another.
Bob Ross did half hour shows for television. A complete painting in a half hour. If you use his techniques and take your time, you can make some gorgeous paintings that look almost like a photograph. It is all about what you like to do and what you think looks good.
@@pikeevans8559 Definitely a great points you made.
@@avasartistrystudio3230 Thank you. I don't understand the theory of painting around something, and I don't understand wiping paint off to put more paint on. If you want sky holes in your trees....paint the sky , then paint the tree with holes in it, and be done with it. Bob Ross' method gets attacked by certain segments of the art community as though somehow it is inferior or something. Apparently it isn't "painterly" enough for them.
@@pikeevans8559 I understand. I like and practice Ross's technique myself. Just the ability that you are not committed to any form and it changes as you paint is wonderful in addition to the ability to mix multiple colors directly on the canvas and get what you want to me is fascinating. That said, Stefan's technique is interesting.
I’ve seen artist Blocking in and letting the paint dry. It’s an amazing affect. I do like putting the sky down on some of my paintings.. My opinion but I’ve always heard Artist say “this is one way, but not THE way”
Agree, That's why we have maps, because there's more ways then one to get to the same place.
New subscriber here thanks for the very helpful video's! I am getting used to you're classes on here feel like I know you in real life lol. Take care man :)
Welcome aboard!
Fantastic thank you. I wonder if you have a plan for eucalyptus?
You know...THE THING!
THe thing
I am new to your channel, it's wonderful...so far my use of oil paint is to color my encaustic wax bars...HA! You are thinning your paints, what do you use for your thinning? Mineral spirits?
OH you just said turpentine!🙁
We could learn a lot from trees or in other words we could learn a few things from their existence among each other and in their environment.
Fabulous lesson! I am going to try this in watercolor.
gotta try the negative thingy after years of painting the sky first-hmmm
Very helpful instructions as always, but I'm pretty sure putting that much solvent in your paint, would severely weaken the paint film and it would be full of cracks after some years
How so? Isn’t doing this for glazing purposes a super common thing, even in ages past?
I would give anything to take your fall class. I've been watching you for a few years and it seems so magical and peaceful up there; I feel like my soul needs something like that right now.
Unfortunately I'm stuck down in the grossly overpopulated part of the state and I'm poor as dirt for the foreseeable future. Do you need a ranch hand? Will work for shelter... and only half joking...
I wish I had a place for you to stay, meanwhile lets just keep on dancing
@@StefanBaumann Thanks, that’s sweet of you to say.
What can we do but dance (and paint)? ☺️ Thank the gods there is art and laughter. Cheers
The panel is wet with what?
This guy is one step up from Bob Ross.
Only one Step?
First impression of this video. Ooohhhhhh! He sounds a bit like Mr Bob Ross.
The thing about trees is that they rarely grow alone but in clusters to forests.
Are you using oils in this demo? Thank you
yes
Unreal that someone would dislike Stefan's video, ANY of them, lol. Weirdos
I Love you Thanks for the kind words
@@StefanBaumann you're welcome, utterly disgusting of folks to do that, I love you back!
Is this acrylic ??????
Whenever I paint trees I repeat to myself; need holes for the little birdies to fly through.😉
I love that
Is this watercolor
I wish you would show how to paint in watercolor!!
whatever Lola wants, Lola gets
@@StefanBaumann 😆
Interesting.
I keep seeing your name on a cloned channel with a different similar man!
Lol it’s Paula your student of many years
Stefan Baumann were your ancestors german? Because of your Name🇩🇪🙂
yes and swiss
@@StefanBaumann cool🙂 do you know, what meaning your last Name has?
If I take half of it, "Baum" it means "Tree"..."
Mann" means "man"...
"Bau" means " Building "
Just incase you care to know, or maybe you already know...
I wish you all the best greetings from germany😊
And thank you for your tips, I just found you and look forward to watch more videos from you.
A tree is a three dimensional shape ,it is basically a cone .
captured audience in the bathroom 😂
I wish he taught watercolor. This doesn’t work in watercolor. Sky has to go in first. Tree color can be adjusted a tiny bit less blue to compensate. Dry brush with the side of a round brush also leaves sky holes.
Hmm, It seems awkward and the painting looks cumbersome and strange to me. Was waiting to the end but nothing ever came together.
Very interesting to see though and appreciate the
different approach. Just like opinions we all have different ones!!
