As a retired Countryside officer and conservationist, I totally agree with your comments about the mindless act of vandalism from the low life that destroyed this beautiful tree, be proud in the fact that you have created, by using your amazing talent as a artist, a beautiful tribute to a once magnificent living sculpture. I feel deeply for those who have had their loved ones ashes scattered here as now they have this memory to add to grieving hearts instead of the peacefulness intended. Mindless vandalism.

I know how you can feel about the tree. It was some years ago, the people in the house next door had passed away and their kids wanted to develop the site with 5 houses in place of one. There was an old oak tree in the way and one Saturday some loathsome creatures were employed to cut it down. I tried to get hold of someone, anyone, at the Council to have them stopped, but there was no one 'available. Sorry.' That tree was over 350 years old and might even have seen some of the English Civil War as a sapling. Once gone, it cannot be replaced. 🤬 Lovely painting, as always. Thanks.

As a native Coloradan, in the USA, I feel the pain you must feel with the loss of such an icon. We had a woman start a forest fire to get back at her boyfriend over some slight. It consumed thousands of acres of old growth trees, and polluted one of the finest trout streams in the Western US. The loss of these things is immeasurable. Your beautiful painting is a great testament to something so very well loved. I'm not as good as you, but I will try my best to capture that emotion. Thanks again for your wonderful instruction. My best to your wife and the fine pups.

When I heard the news I felt horrified and tremendously sad, because they are very old living beings, pure living history. There is an African proverb that says: "The death of an old man is like the burning of a library." In this case it was a very old tree. Wonderful tribute to your painting, I remember that this summer you published a beautiful watercolor of Hadrian's Wall... Anyway. From Spain, a cordial greeting.

No, you are right, those who chose to chop it down were exactly what you said. It's a tragedy and I assume they cut it down to cause the biggest impact on others because they didn't choose just any old tree. A wonderful tribute. I think the pain felt by everyone for this tree, even if they have no special connection to it, is a cry for the whole of nature and the damage us moronic humans are doing to it. We are simply the most imbecilic species.

Hi Charles, was up your way only a couple of weeks ago & had this on a list to go & see at some point. I’m so pleased to see that you’ve put this video out as a remembrance to such an iconic, special, & beautiful subject of Northumberland. As I’ve known you for a couple of years now through the SAA & followed in your footsteps of Watercolours for some years, you’ve helped mend a situation greatly by producing an unforgettable memory of this beautiful tree & it’s location. Something I’m sure will be a subject of art by many & a landscape never to be forgotten. I feel for everyone in Northumberland just now Charles & thanks for this beautiful portrayal. Pete. Y. Dales.

Your passion and pain were clear throughout this demonstration lovely man. I was surprised that you managed to keep your composure as well as you did. It was an iconic tree and while the destruction of any tree without purpose is sad, this one is senseless as it was internationally known as a part of the Hadrians wall landscape.
It was your Worcestershire friend Al who asked had I watched this and I admitted I hadn’t, so glad that I have.
Gayle does a great job filming you working. I really hope that you paint this as a demonstration piece, I would buy the blank page as I did with Bamburgh Castle another iconic landmark. Love your painting but very sad and angry at the wanton vandalism ( @###ing idiots) which inspired you to paint it.🫂x

Does anyone know why they would do such a dreadful act of vandalism? Thank you so much Charles for painting this once beautiful tree.

Oh my goodness Charles, here in Australia, I heard about a famous tree being cut down in the UK. It was on the news and I didn’t realise it was THAT tree as the news item was not so detailed about the location of the tree and more focus was on the age of the alleged offender. I’m devastated too.

An excellent memorial to a great Northumbrian landmark. By the way, your painting of Morwick mill was still in the entrance when I retired from 34 years at Acklington (HMP Northumbria) and I enjoyed our chats in the mess when I was working on some projects for Hazel B.
