Hello from Germany! I learn a lot by watching you painting and hearing to your comments- although I don't understand every single word. Thank you so much! Christine
So well done! I love the blending of realism and impressionism. And your teaching is some of the best! So glad I found you today! I look forward to learning more.
Thank you so much for these tutorials. I’m a beginner in painting and I’ve just found them by accident. So glad that I can finally learn how to paint trees and foliage which I have always shied away from - until now. 😊
I have watched your video a couple of times. Learned so much. REALLY liked that you completely every detail of the painting. Some videos do not! Thankyou.
Greetings from the Adirondacks! Just discovered your videos today by accident but I think it was destiny! I love to paint landscapes in acrylics and trees seem to give me the hardest time. Trees are my favorite subjects though and I can’t get enough of them when hiking and photograph them constantly to study their shapes later. When I visit art exhibits and galleries, landscapes especially with trees are magnetic eye candy that draws my attention. Years ago I excitedly showed a series of small collage quilts to an artist friend and she told me they were nice and then asked me what the purpose was. I may have misunderstood her query, but that single question has remained embedded in my mind. To me, the purpose was evident in the joy of creating something fun with colors, patterned fabrics and whimsy. They remain packed away in a box, unfinished. I stopped quilting. However that comment crops in my mind up every time I paint which has been a lifelong passion of mine and I am not young. Your comments are encouraging to viewers. Thank you. I look forward to seeing more videos featuring your stunning work!
Fantastic... I have a terrible times painting trees and folage with painting every detail. Drive me crazy, lol. Your videos are a huge help. TY sooo very much for posting.
I enjoyed this video very much! I learned a lot. The pallet work to soften the edges in particular. I’m looking forward to many more videos. Thank you.
I really like the way you paint. I watch your videos whenever I can; however, it is much easier to see your technique and learn from it when the camera is only on the subject and the painting....not with the pallette in the picture. Thanks for the tutorials.
wow! such beautiful painting!! I feel motivated painting even more trees 🌳 I will be doing a livestream in a few hours.. thanks for that clarity. cheers 🍻
Loving all the information in this video! I learned I’m starting out with way too thick of paint. It is so much easier to find your values with a thin wash. When you said to not to go after exact colors, but to go after approximate values, something clicked in my head and I understood what I need to do when blocking in my paintings. It’s all about the thin wash! 😀
Another amazing video. I learned a lot and i really appreciate the way you teach. Listening to your thought process is totally helpful. Thank you so much.
Loved the trees! It is late so I skipped through some of the video unfortunately I missed where you told what medium you used, it certainly looked like oil.
Hello Jason, I'm French and I love your videos! What do you use for your first coat, mineral spirits, turpentine or others? and what medium next, Liquin or others? Thank you, and see you soon on Patreon, Jacques
Hi Jacques! Greetings from the U.S.A. and thanks for watching! When I'm plein air painting I just use mineral spirits with my oil paint. Since the painting is done alla prima and I tend to paint pretty thin en plein air, I don't use any mediums, just paint and mineral spirits. That said, in the studio when touching up dry paintings I will use Galkyd Gel, to prevent sinking in. I rarely have sinking-in issues with my plein air paintings since they are done in one session. I hope that helps!
First timer to your site. Loved watching your video through to the end. Learned so much. Eager to get out and paint outside. I certainly will subscribe to your site and follow you. I especially liked how you used the pallet knife to change the edges of your trees. I’m going to try that. Thank you for showing your complete process.
I appreciated your thoughts during the course of the work. I especially liked the one about “Warner cooler and lighter darker” and “it’s all about relationships”. I liked the thoughts on how to draw and painting color en plein air. Cheers!!
Excellent video Jason I am a pastel artist but I enjoy using your techniques to further my understanding of techniques . I may go over to the dark side in time 😘
LOL!!! I Iove pastels, but just don't like the idea of carrying 500 sticks around to do a painting. ;) Thanks for watching! So glad you are enjoying them!
I wanted to say out loud wow wow don't touch that again when you were using the pallet knife, there was a shape that came into view and you didn't, great work. Thanks that was nicely done and I appreciate that you put up a long complete video, again thanks and well done.
What a marvelous painting! Loved it as I do all your videos. I wonder if, on the lower part of the dead tree trunk you might put a few lines indicating the agonizing drying of its death. Give it more character.
That could be interesting, but when I'm plein air painting I usually don't have time to think of clever things. I barely have enough time to capture the colors and values.
Great video and info, thanks Jason! Stages, learning to observe and actually 'see'! And yeah watch out, permanent green probably has the garish Phthalo green in it.
Bonjour comme j’aime votre technique, j’essaie de peindre comme ça,une peinture lâche, des valeurs la lumière et l’ombre. Je tends vers le ténébrisme ou le flou.
Thoroughly enjoyed it! Again, your painting looks more real than the photo. I find that so amazing. When you talk about sketching trees outside in detail. Should I be using colored pencils? Or are you speaking more about the overall shape of the tree and limbs/branches and not as much about the leaves? Sorry, hope my question makes sense. I'm a beginner 😊
Thanks Roxanne! Trees can be tricky but you may find this video helpful that I made on the most common mistakes made when painting trees: ruclips.net/video/f0bTYsWxAXk/видео.html
Hi JSason; learned so much from your video and thoroughly enjoyed watching ...2 material questions if you don't mind: What Cadmium Red are your using (i.e Light? Medium, Deep ?) and which palette knife manufacturer and size do you use to make the sky holes? You are a master! thank you for responding. Best wishes - A new fan and subscriber.
Thank you kindly! I'm using Cad. Red Medium and the palette knife was probably a Che Son, the smallest they make, around 1 inch long. That one broke since this video so I'm not 100% sure. Thanks for watching!
Jason, are you painting in PA here? Really liked watching you paint the trees. I'm in the details of stage 2. Trying to loosen up without having my trees look like blobs (they are at least more refined than lollipops! Lol ) Keep up the good work! And thank you for taking the time to make videos :)
This time of year in upstate NY, you want to at least wear somerhing with color on it. If I go in the woods im wearing my orange hood. I made sure to buy an umbrella thats silver on the outside no white.
What strikes me most is that the center of your pallette is one color and its minor variations. I set up my entire pallette ahead of time for the entire range. Is there a right way and wrong way?
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you set up your entire palette ahead of time for the entire range. Are you trying to pre-mix every color in your scene?
@@JasonTako Yes, but not every variation. I suppose that by the end of the painting, I pretty much do have all the colors on the palette. It gets a bit crowded, but it sure is easy if I need to go back and do additional work or make Corrections. I have three pallets in my freezer!
@@JasonTako Yes, but the pallette is a bit cumbersome. I use a covered Masterson with piece of glass in it. I like your way. When it comes to Alla Prima, I shouldn't need the colors I mixed later on. Thanks for responding. Appreciate the videos.
I like the fact that your videos are not time lapsed. This way they are useful
I found the use of palette knife most instructive. Lovely effect.
Hello from Germany! I learn a lot by watching you painting and hearing to your comments- although I don't understand every single word. Thank you so much! Christine
I hope all is well in Germany. Thanks for watching Christine!

Thank you so much Jason. One of the best tree and foliage painting demonstrations. I'll definitely be returning to it. 🙌🏾😊🙌🏾
Really beautiful demo and painting. Thank you !
Thanks for watching!!
Thank you. Showing the errors was really good at first. Excellent video.
Beautiful painting thanks, greetings from Australia 🇦🇺.
Thank you!! Take care "Down Under."
I'm a self taught super realist oil painter, but I just love this, and watching you work.
Well done bro.❤
Thank you kindly!!

Nice painting .Good dissertation on drawing and painting also a well produced video Thanks .
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your talent on how to paint trees. Now I can improve my painting . my first time to view . I will subscribed and follow .
Great video. Thanks for the thoughtful step by step approach.
I really liked the way you pulled the blue of the sky into the tree with the knife. It was instant 3D detail
Thank you!! The palette knife is great for things like that.
I like the care you put into these trees. It shows in the results. This taught me I could be more patient and careful.
That's awesome! A lot of people (my past self included) think that loose painting must be done fast. It can be but doesn't need to be
@@JasonTako so true. I usually slam my trees down to get a loose “natural “ effect to my detriment. I’ll give your way a go. Thanks for teaching!
Thank you for this video. BEAUTIFUL
TY for a great demo!

great stuff. i noticed u didn't use the Cad Red

It's much easier to paint something "similar" to what it is than exactly what it is. And nobody would know except you.
good...
Hi Jason, such a great video! one question please; do you only use Terpentin as medium? Thanks and greetings from Frankfurt.
So glad you liked the video! When plein air painting I only used mineral spirits both as a thinner for my paint and to clean my brushes.
@@JasonTako thanks a lot for the quick answer! 👍

Great video, well done. Green on green on green, not easy. I too tried using permanent green, couldn't deal with it, off my palette!
Thanks Jim! Perm Green can be tricky as like other greens it's very intense and needs to be heavily neutralized to match what you see in mature.
Beautiful tree...but why not lighten the value on the very lower left and put in some sky holes?

Hi Denise, yes I'm painting in PA. I live here for the time being. Keep painting and paint a lot from life to loosen up. It's the best cure.
This time of year in upstate NY, you want to at least wear somerhing with color on it. If I go in the woods im wearing my orange hood. I made sure to buy an umbrella thats silver on the outside no white.
Now I know why my paintings weren't working. Thanks!
I’ve been a realism artist for years so now I’m trying to paint looser all I see is detail and it’s overwhelming especially trees and foliage.
Paint from life, and squint when you look at your subject. Focus on the effect of light on the overall form.
I think the trees look taller when there is less ground... like Delaunay's eiffle tower paintings...he even tilted them to get them to look taller

Start with a one inch brush at least and just get the shapes in. All that niggling drives me crazy.
