Hey, would you recommend shoes like Barefoot or similar type of shoes for scoliosis or kyphosis? Do you think that the type of shoes we wear can have an impact on our posture and spine? When I was growing up, I used to hear that I should wear heels so that my back (kyphosis) straightens and that my shoulders are pushed back because I hunchback. I wonder if that holds up true because I've heard some contradicting information regarding heels and now there's this barefoot shoes trend that's getting talked about... I'm curious what you think. Thank you so much for making videos on various topics!
Yes, shoes can definitely impact our posture and spine as their shape and structure affect how our feet and leg muscles move and work. For shoes, there's no recommendation for types specifically FOR scoliosis or kyphosis. High heels have cons for many reasons; aside from squishing the toes, it transfers the body weight into the balls of the foot and the pelvis often tips forward to accommodate the changes in weight distribution. That can result in increase lumbar lordosis (scoop of lower back) which is also typically over emphasized in hyperkyphosis, so we wouldn't recommend high heels FOR any specific condition. Barefoot / minimalistic shoes have their benefits but would require a thoughtful adjustment period to minimize risk of injury. Please seek guidance from a Physiotherapist if you're going to transition to these shoes, especially if you're planning to train/run/workout in them.

Definitely a relief when you realize you don't have to change your sleeping position! "Properly" is subjective though, because we still really emphasize sleep quality, regardless of sleeping position, as it impacts so many aspects of our general health. So if you have to move around, it's okay.

@@TSCConnect I have! although I meant specifically for sleeping positions, with scheuermann's lying on my back is more or less impossible without a large stack of pillows
Hello) thanks for the video! I have a question related to this topick. Ive been sleeping on the floor for the last 2 month, with the pillows under my knees. My doctor recommended it to me. I am trying to sleep in a straight possition, but its not natural for me, i am a side sleeper. And somewhere at the middle of the night i turn onto my sides. My question: can sleeping on the side (on the floor) damage my spine and my posture? I feel discomfort at the upper back (at sholders and arms), ceause the surfice is too hard. Of course i am laying a carpet and some kind of blanket to make it softer, but it still uncomfortable.Thank you) I know I should ask my doctor about that, but i would like to hear a different perspective too. Thanks again) I whould be happy to hear from you.
Hello! That's a fairly specific question so we can't give medical advice on RUclips, and your chiropractor may have had specific reasons for recommending the floor. What we say to our clients here in our clinics is to sleep on a firmer mattress which is typically supportive enough while still being comfortable.
There are hundreds of exercises that you can do in the gym, including all the ones we have in our workouts on our channel, the technique for any exercise matters more than the choice of the exercise. You can add weights to any of these. Bodybuilding is about choosing the right weights/sets/reps/breaks + diet if you want to build muscle and lean out. On this channel we focus on general strength and encouraging people with scoliosis to feel safe when exercising, and don’t focus so much on esthetics goals like size or composition.

You can work with a healthcare provider who’s trained in scoliosis to determine the nature of your curve. If they have access to your X-rays, that would be ideal
I have an s curve scoliosis and trying to figure out a sleeping position that takes both my lumbar and thoracic curves into consideration is frustrating.
Hii, i am back sleeper with thick pillows, but when i try to change this, with neutral neck position, i find that my gerd is acting up... What should i do?
Try sleeping with your head, neck, and back elevated. So the trunk is leaning back but not lying all the way flat. However, please see a medical professional if symptoms persist
It depends on what type of scoliosis someone has. If the curve is due to a muscle imbalance, then significant improvements can be made. If it’s a structural scoliosis where the vertebrae change shape, you may slow the progress or even improve it a bit, but unlikely to correct 100%
If you have pain when you wake up or in the middle of the night, please see a medical professional because there are many possible reasons for discomfort.
Many people with scoliosis have very normal pregnancy and childbirth, however some people experience different symptoms. We encourage you to find a physiotherapist in your area who can support you throughout pregnancy and to prepare for childbirth.
If it feels comfortable for your neck and head then it’s typically fine, but since that’s a personal question you may benefit from asking a physiotherapist near you who can assess your spine alignment
i’ve recently bought a pillow that’s meant to help align the spine. it’s memory foam and made for scoliosis so i thought it would help me. does anyone know anything about scoliosis pillows and if they help with reducing my curve or aligning it so it will reduce aching? i just bought it on a whim thinking it would help but i haven’t heard anyone talk about them so does anyone know anything about them?
Although pillows may help with comfort and alleviating symptoms, they're unlikely to reduce your curve because curve-specific exercises and treatment are generally required to make changes to your spine's alignment
Yes for many people the prone position is uncomfortable. Short times in that position are generally ok, sometimes your body needs a change in position.

@@TSCConnect I have! although I meant specifically for sleeping positions, with scheuermann's lying on my back is more or less impossible without a large stack of pillows
Pillows might be totally appropriate to support your head, as long as the height of the pillows aren't pushing your head even further forward
Does it apply to when you sleep in a brace? What recommendations would you give then?
In a brace, sleeping position doesn't matter as much since the brace maintains the corrective alignment of the spine throughout the night.

Depending on how big the curve is and if it is getting bigger, it may be serious but maybe if it’s stable it’s not a problem

is scoliosis and spondylolisthesis the same?
No, they’re different conditions. Some people have both but they’re not necessarily related.
Thoughts show lifts and high heels for posture and spinal health
High heels change your postural alignment, most notably by increasing anterior pelvic tilt, which increases lumbar lordosis.

If it feels comfortable for your neck and head then it’s typically fine, but since that’s a personal question you may benefit from asking a physiotherapist near you who can assess your spine alignment
What if you have to sleep on an incline because of sinus issues
Incline is fine as long as it's not just your head and neck that are lifted (which would cause rounding of the upper back)
