    ***NOTE!! Regardless of the side, shape, or level of your scoliosis, these scoliosis exercises should be done on both sides! They will naturally stretch and strengthen the side that needs it the most without having to think about it. (They'll stretch the muscles one side more because the muscles one side are always tighter. They will strengthen one side more (the outer part of the curve) because that side has more resistance due to the curve, so needs it more. And they will mobilise one side more because one side will always be more tight and restricted.) But you don’t have to know where the curves are, or even think about it. Just do them regularly, both sides, to get scoliosis pain relief and prevent long term issues from having a scoliosis.
    In most cases they will NOT straighten the spine, because in most cases the shape of the bones have changed permanently as they grew. ("Adolescent Idiopathtic Scoliosis")
    P.S. You might notice that I have a mild scoliosis--you can see my neck bends to one side slightly. So I do these exercises too! 💪

    Hello, I have had scoliosis for some 60+ years. My gym teacher noticed it when I was around 15-16 years old but I never told my parents. We were living in a small village, no help around... I was reminded some 5-6 years ago when I was on holiday at a friend's place. I was coming out of the shower, saw myself in a large mirror, and noticed for the 1st time that my left side was more curved than my right one which was nearly straight, and my waist hardly marked! I have seen physiotherapists and chiropractors, but nothing much has changed. Now, my left ribs touch my hip. I do some yoga but can't do the exercises where I have to bend over my left side as it hurts. I am surprised to see that you do say to stretch both sides, regardless what side the curvature is on. I am going to try your exercises because they look interesting but... I'm not sure I'll do some of those on the left side. I am seeing an osteopath in a couple of weeks. Is there anything specific I could ask him? He will notice my scoliosis for sure! Thank you for your very interesting video.

    I had 33 degrees scoliosis and I wear body braces and decreased by 10 degrees but I stopped doing follow up check-ups and adjustments during covid cuz i was depressed and last week i had my check up and x-ray. Unfortunately, my scoliosis degree increased with no difference from before. I'm 17 and my doctor said that his final statement is my scolio wont improve anymore and it wont also worsen since i will have to live with having scoliosis forever since this is already my adult spine and it has already hardened. My heart dropped when i heard this and I regret for neglecting my health. I will have to live with drinking pain reliever pills. So today, i gathered my courage to search up exercises that will help me. Do i really have no hope now?

      I've seen plenty of patients with 33° scoliosis or more with very little problems. If you're proactive, and keep your spine supple & flexible, using mobilising and stretching exercises, there's a very good chance you can live many years quite comfortably. Without the need for any painkillers.

  • @AriaLuminosa
    @AriaLuminosa Год назад +1

    I had dorso-lumbar scoliosis since I was a child and I also wore a corset for a few years in my teens. Until recently my most prominent problem was a perpetually tight muscle near my left shoulder blade which often causes tingling in my hand and pain between my neck and shoulders, but over the past few years I have developed a much more annoying problem. It started with numbness in my lower back, which when it goes away leaves me with a not too strong but very annoying pain that often affects my left buttock and leg. Also I can walk for long distances without problems but standing still is often agonizing as my legs go numb and heavy and my lower back becomes heavy and sometimes slightly sore. According to my doctor I probably have sciatica from misaligned hips due to scoliosis, but I haven't had any tests yet to rule out a hernia or anything else. The exercises you showed were taught to me in the hospital years ago but since I have lower back and leg problems I'm a bit afraid to do them because I'm afraid they might worsen my condition, what do you recommend?

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  Год назад +1

      Numbness and heaviness are signs of nerve compression so I think the first thing that you should be doing is getting a MRI to check for spinal stenosis and disc protrusions. Numbness is not something to be taken lightly

    The cat is hilarious 😂 What do you think of the Schroth method for treating scoliosis? I developed scoliosis in childhood and I'm now 51. My upper back would always get tight due to the curvature, but after 40, I started hurting in my lower back too, especially when sitting for too long. I think it's coming from the SI joint because it hurts down in that area.

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  Год назад +2

      Schroth is probably the best bet to minimize the scoliosis when you are still growing (and bracing). But After your mid 20's the growth plates in the vertebrae are well are and truly closed, so the shapes of the vertebrae are fixed and can't be changed. Schroth might help a bit but it won't change the shape.
      At 51 I'd be focusing on mobilising the joints with things like these exercises, to stop the joints from seizing up too much.
      But keep in mind that what's happening in your low back now may have very little to do with the scoliosis. (For example, today in practise someone came in with a bad low back but her scoliosis was in her thoracic spine and the two were relatively unrelated.)
      Try some of my lower back exercises. Actually I'll be updating them in the next couple of months. Good luck!

    Yup, hips uneven, shoulders uneven, winged scapula. Not very tight or painful ever since starting the gym, but slightly limited in weightlifting mobility. Just that bench press, face pulls and weighted crunches make it feel like someone stabbed through the lower ribs/stomach/shoulder blade. Or perhaps pulled the chest. I guess it means things want to return to where they belong.

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  Год назад +2

      Yes you're right. There will always been more resistance to movement on the exterior of the curve, so it will naturally mobilise and strengthen on that side more. And there will always be shortening of muscles on the inside of the curve, so the exercises will naturally stretch that side more. So just doing them both sides works. The same for the levels, up and down the spine.
      You'll just notice that one side is always a bit harder. And you'll feel that the point of maximum curve up the spine is the place you'll notice it more.

The ribs actually change shape as you grow during your adolescent years (in people who have the most common form of scoliosis), so it's very unlikely that you can change that back. The exercises will mobilise the rib joints so that you get less symptoms associated with related rib joint restrictions.

    Hello, I'm Italian and first of all I apologize for my bad English. A friend of mine introduced me to your lessons. I am 49 years old and have had 45 degree lumbar scoliosis since I was a teenager. In the last 2 years, also due to heavy physical activity assisting elderly parents and systemic connective tissue disease that is damaging my tissues, the scoliosis has increased to 69 degrees. It's associated with kyphosis, osteophytes, spondylosis and osteopenia. The physiatrist now prescribes me the corset to support the spine. Do you think this is a correct indication? Can your exercises benefit me in any way or do I risk doing worse? Thank you very much for the attention you'll kindly pay me and I really hope in your answer.

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  Год назад +1

      I think the corset is a good idea to help stop the progression ... in your case. You need to minimise more damage in the spine and stop the angle from getting worse.
      It is hard to assess without examining your spine, but I think you should probably not wear the corset all day. Only to support you for part of the day. (The hardest part of the day.)
      Definitely do exercises to mobilize and strengthen the spine and the muscles around the spine! (If you can do it without irritating your spine)

    Hello doctor, I watched your video and I have a question lately I have been having a pain the middle of my back when I wake up from a 6 hour sleep it goes away in about 30 minutes after i get out of bed I have tried different mattress but the problem is still there does it have something related to scoliosis??

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  Год назад +2

      The most likely is that you have done restricted joints in your back. Movement loosens them. A lack of movement, like sleeping at night, makes it worse.
      Exercise to loosen the joints often are enough for this, but some cases need to see a chiropractor to loosen up the joints. If it persists though, get it checked by a doctor.
      If it's in the mid back, try these...

Feet turned under & start of back problems. Over the years I’ve had several other back injuries. Was 5.5 & now am 4.11. Chiro has helped some - therapy not much - & I refuse to let rods be put on my spine. I'm 71 YO, Male, now retired and a sufferer of a number of Spinal Conditions including Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees (up from 22 degrees in the past 10+ years). I have had a few doctor opinions about the cause (Idiopathioc). In 1966, at 15 yo, I fractured my right Femur playing HS Football (not Soccer). It took over 4 months for the healing process which included being in a full Body Cast for 10 weeks after 6 weeks in traction in the hospital. When the cast came off, the doctor was "surprised" to find that my right leg was 1 inch Shorter(the femur was shorter). Other than measuring both my parents' legs (finding my mother was 1/4" short on the right), he left that Unaddressed. After about 15 years, the lower back pains and stiffness started affecting me. It's been downhill ever since. The Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD) is my Ground ZERO, despite one doctor opining otherwise?? Now, I have OA in my spinal vertebrae & Facet Joints; Stenosis at various sites in the spine, DDD throughout, C3-C7 disc bulges & stenosis, T9, T10, L2 L3 and L5-S1 disc buges (and Sponylioethisis ) and OA in both Hips and Knees. I never hit the 8-10 Pain Markers, but generally around 4-6 (It Varies), with constant Stiffness and chronic pains daily. I have seen 6 different Spinal and Neuro Surgeons since 2018 - all said NO Surgery on the Lumbar spine , far too much Arthritis. Acpuncture did very litle to help with the Pains, 6 different Chiros including Upper Cervical Chiropractic did little to help after many sessions. Many people fail to realize that Stenosis and Scoliosic curves affect the Nerves which in turn contributes to a high Misery Index. I will try these exercises, but the Stiffness in my spine limits me. FWW, I have ben taking many supplements to combat the Inflammation, spending lots of $$$$$ in that effort. I learned a few months ago from my Pain Management Doctor that my initial Cervical MRI done in 2012, revealed that I have a More Narrow Than Normal Spinal Canal. Common Sense to this Layman would indicate that would be a contributing factor to the heightened Misery and Anxiety.

    I’m always looking for stretches and exercises on the internet that help scoliosis. I have AIS since 13, left lumbar curve, or Levoscoliosis. Here in the UK there are not many professionals with much knowledge of scoliosis.
    These exercises are brilliant for keeping the back supple and flexible, which of course reduces pain.
    Interestingly, I notice Usain Bolt has scoliosis too- lumbar and thoracic in an S shaped. He is the fastest man in the world and works hard on building up his back muscles so you can hardly tell he suffers from it. I wonder, I have started using the gym now at age 42, as I have looser stomach muscles from having children. Is it possible do you think to build up the concave muscles to reduce the rib hump and support the spine better?
    It’s only recently my rib cage has started irritating me on the left side, it feels like something digging in sometimes, I wonder if it’s because my stomach muscles are not very strong?
    Thank You for the videos, I’m so happy I found this channel to use!

    • @BodyFixExercises
      @BodyFixExercises  2 года назад +2

      The Schroth technique aims at reducing the curve and rib hump. You might have some luck with that, but it's more likely to help in teenagers, it's a lot of work, and I'm not convinced it can do much. The issue is that with AIS the bones change shape as you grow in the teenage years. Now that the bones have matured and formed their final shape (at 18 years old or so) you can't alter their shape.
      The rib cage pain could be rib restriction, muscle tightness, or arthritic joint degeneration. The exercises on this video are the best I know to help with the first two. But do them on both sides. I don't really think working the abs will make much of a difference to your rib irritation.
      This video may help too. ruclips.net/video/T8vKCXP7OSc/видео.html
      Good luck!

    I have functional scoliosis. Have had it for the past 7 months. I tried 3 physiotherapists. I'm on my 3rd and they are helping me improve my posture and strengthen muscles around it but I still get back pain when I have to walk to school with a heavy bag. Or help my parents move houses with furniture. And it's very expensive. There's been improvement but very little. Im now 16 years and 3 months old. My scoliosis was a cause of 3 previous lower back injuries and muscle imbalances and weightlifting strain being my bulged disc, bruised tail bone and then generally sore lower back muscles from the nervous systems' trauma. ------ My question: at what age will my spine stop growing? I have a short torso by the way. Also I haven't tried doing the back brace to straighten my spine but everyone tells me because mine is functional it shouldn't be addressed with a brace. I wish I could figure this out without it costing so much money and time

      Every case is different, so it's hard to say without examining her. If she has only just started growing it is more likely that you can influence the curves. If she has already done most of her growing it is harder. In most cases the aim is to stop it from curving more as she grows. You can look for a specialist in the Schroth technique, and they should be able to advise you on any bracing required too. Do what you can while she is still growing because her bones have not matured fully yet, but make sure you get professional advice for her specific case. Good luck!
