When diagnosed with scoliosis, patients are often concerned with what they can and can not do. Even when it comes to career choices, patients are concerned about what effects this might have on their scoliosis.
When a patient is diagnosed with scoliosis, it means they have an unnatural sideways curve with rotation in their spine.
Scoliosis has four classifications based on the size of the Cobb angle:
    Mild - 10-25 degrees
    Moderate - 25-45 degrees
    Severe - 45-80 degrees
    Very severe - 80 degrees & up
In addition to the size of the curve, there are also many different types of scoliosis. The most common is idiopathic scoliosis. This encompasses the majority of known cases of scoliosis. It also means that the cause of scoliosis is unknown.
The second type is neuromuscular scoliosis. This type is caused by Marfan's syndrome, cerebral palsy, & related conditions. This can result in two types of neuromuscular conditions: 1) the tissue surrounding the spine becomes laxed, or 2) the tissue becomes too rigid. With neuromuscular scoliosis, there might be issues in the spinal cord, such as cysts, tumor, or tether cord, that has led to scoliosis.
Another type is congenital scoliosis. This often happens during pregnancy, & it is detected at birth. When this happens, one of the spine's bones develops incorrectly into a hemivertebrae, a triangular malformation in a rectangular structure such as the spine.
These three types are the most common in adolescents. When it comes to adults, the most common are:
-Degenerative scoliosis: the spine degenerates slowly over time.
-Traumatic scoliosis happens when patients sustain significant trauma on their spine, such as an accident, and scoliosis continues progressing from that moment forward.
Scoliosis will often worsen, and the biggest triggers are growth & development, especially in adolescents as they go through rapid growth. However, it doesn't stop there because, as adults, gravity pushes the spine, causing scoliosis to grow slowly over time. Also, for adults, the progression of scoliosis is directly linked to the curve's size & the patient's age, so as patients get older, their scoliosis will start to progress rapidly at some point.
Movement is important for overall physical health, as is exercise. And we do encourage exercise because the body is meant to move in order to keep its natural function. However, the exercises a patient could do will depend on their scoliosis type and size and must be customized to each patient individually.
Exercises that cause strain to the spine are exercises to avoid. Such as compressive, downward force, or heavy impact exercises because these will put the spine under stress, and scoliosis injuries can worsen. Also, exercises that might put the spine in an unnatural position, outside of the normal range of motion, can bring problems to scoliosis patients.
Additionally, one-sided activities, especially causing strain on the side of the patient's curve, should be avoided.
    Some of these are:
    Football
    Hockey
    Soccer
    Gymnastics
    Dance
    Ballet
    Diving
    Tennis
    Golf
Regardless of the sports or exercises a patient does, there is no way to predict which actions during their growth & progressive stages will worsen their curve, only that the progression will happen at some point, & these exercises might make it worse.
When patients undergo proper treatment for their scoliosis, however, there will be very few restrictions to what sports & exercises they can do because the treatment should cover these possible progressions.
Being proactive in reducing your curve & using specific scoliosis programs that are properly combined to treat your scoliosis will offer you balance throughout your life, which is what we aim for here at the Scoliosis Reduction Center.

Very helpful. I very much appreciate the introduction that identifies the range and briefly describes the different types of scoliosis. It made me aware for the first time that there can be a connection between EDS and scoliosis. I appreciate the inclusion of the full range of scoliosis types, including those that that may impact only a small percent of the population. Often medical educational programs for the general public focus on the most commonly presenting conditions. Routinely educating all, i.e. the general public, patients & their families, and medical professionals, on the full range of scoliosis types helps individuals with less common conditions receive proper diagnosis.

Thank u again. Even though I'm only 49yrs old, i can't do any kind of sports whatsoever. When i do my grocery shopping, about after 5 to 10mins minutes, i'm in pain, and my head arches forward more & it feels like my whole head wants to fall off. When i bring my bins in, I get breathing problems. Last night for example ~ i was just doing my dishes & i had to stop and rest a couple of times, but when i finished, I was in excruciating pain around the lower lumbar region. I'm already very limited in my day to day life. I've already been told, that with my back as it is now. There's nothing i can do about it. Just take every day as it comes. Also, my legs r getting weaker and weaker. I actually felt like my legs were going to collapse on me. That really scared me. My balance is just getting worse, but when i was younger, i was told that i would end up in a Wheelchair. I can't even ride a bike. I remember a few years ago, i tried but my muscles in my legs, were weak as. I wasn't able to push the pedal. It was then, i knew my Scoliosis was getting worse, and quicker than ever before. At least i definitely know what is in store for me in the future, & i've had time to keep going with an open mind and expect the unexpected. I love music and humour, i laugh a lot. That will help & keep me going. It's always been my survival tool. Same as how Drs talk about CBT. I already knew what that was but didn't know there was a name for it. Thanks again. I enjoy ur videos, and i learn bits and pieces every time.

Get a personal trainer specializing in corrective exercise and use supplements that stimulate muscle growth and recovery. My curve is over 60 and this is how I stayed in shape. If u can't afford external help, just start with basic unilateral exercises for full body 3 x a week and definitely creatine is an excellent supplement to o support your muscle. At some point I had trouble developing legs because they would be sore for too long so I got Recovery matrix supplement loaded with amino acids. Of course protein shake 30 min after a workout. For lumbar health start with exercises for the core and and avoid ones that make you bend like sit-ups and deadlifts. Along with core, focus on your glutes- hip thrusts are the most efficient and there are many variations. If the only thing u can do is some biceps curves, it's better than nothing and it will still change your metabolism and allow for progression. Grow your muscle to stabilize the body! Vitamin b complex and some caffeine for energy

I was hit by two different vehicles 4 mos apart in 2020. Before then, I never experienced any problems in my back ever. Both people hit me in the front right side of my vehicles. 2nd one worse than the 1st. Since then, I’ve gotten worse even though I started treatment in 2021 as everything went into lockdown in 2020 due to Covid. On Oct 2022, my X-ray showed a 64 degree curvature in my lower left back (spine leans hard to the lower left) and now I can’t walk without a walker or crutches. I see great chiros who are preventing it from getting worse. Can a curvature be straighten if it’s that severe? i have severe scoliosis, next year I'm going to get surgery. during expirience of scoliosis i had been learning how to compensate daily weight with stretching on the floor with pillow in back.
can i boxing for 5 minutes at day at home? i know this is additional curving, but i i just want to, can help it. with my knowledge of compensation could it have any serious impact to me? thank you!

All my chiropractor,( I have had 2) advise me against the steps as well as my PT . My PT who was teaching me the Stroth method says no steps no lifting like laundry up the stairs. Unfortunately I live in a home with stairs. It really bothers me after going up and down at least 4 to 5 times a day my curve is 45 lumbar 30 thoracic.. I am 47 and had never had problems before with my back, since about 3 weeks ago, I done some light work and that afternoon severe pain started, I could hardle walk, move ect went to hospital and they took xrays saying I have scoliosis, I presume it is lumber for all my pain is there and from lumber my upper body bends to the right and my right hip is much lower then the left, right leg I also have to concentrate to walk on it proper, it does not move proper as the left. (Dr have not told me what degree or nothing when he dianosed me about 3 weeks ago). My question is: I have constant pain (24/7) and some difficulty walking, standing up from sitting ect. My pain is pretty severe and I can hardly do anything, after I have done something small, my pain becomes very unbearable, I do drink pain pills, but the pain does not go away at all. Why should this be please? It feels like bone on bone in my way lower back.

What about leg length discrepancy as a cause?

    • @ScoliosisReductionCenter
      @ScoliosisReductionCenter  7 месяцев назад

When one leg is shorter than the other, the pelvis tilts to the side to try to compensate for the difference in leg length. This tilting can put stress on the spine, causing it to curve to the side. The curve of the spine in scoliosis caused by LLD is usually in the lumbar region, which is the lower part of the back. I would have liked to see the flattening or hyper-extension of the mid-back, as I have no idea what that means. I was braced as a teenager, and the brace forced the flattening of my lumbar curve, which was normal to start with. I ended up looking like I had no buttcheeks. • @ScoliosisReductionCenter
      @ScoliosisReductionCenter  11 месяцев назад +1

It may affect a person's height to some extent. However, it's important to understand that scoliosis does not directly cause a decrease in a person's overall height.
In mild cases of scoliosis, the height difference may not be noticeable or have a significant impact. However, in more severe cases where the curvature of the spine is significant, the asymmetry in the spine can cause changes in posture and alignment of the body. This can result in a noticeable difference in apparent height when measured or observed from various angles. To learn more about our methods, please visit our website at www.scoliosisreductioncenter.com/treatment-approach.

Hello... I have recently been diagnosed with scoliosis, I think it's degenerative. Had a consult for surgery and was considering doing it. I am so desperate at this point that when I first was diagnosed with it I was definitely a huge no surgery fan. And now because I haven't been given the kinds of options and treatments that you offer, I have now gone to the other end of the spectrum because I just want to be straight and have no pain, or at least be at a more manageable pain level. Right now with the level of pain I have I can't function as an adult of 64 yes and this is causing me much depression. I feel stuck and a year ago I had that proactive mentality but it has gotten me nowhere; either treatment not covered by medical insurance, lack of physicians that have knowledge about the proactive approach or just the unavailability of doctors and services here in Hawaii. I am angry, frustrated, depressed and feeling like we there is no hope for me getting better or working towards a better life in my elder years. This is not me, not my personality, not a stand still type of person, there's so much to do but I physically can't do it. My life has turned 360 degrees in a flash of a moment that my body and mind are still in shock; like who is this person that has taken over my life? I lose myself daily and I'm so devastated to the point of not leaving my home, not able to keep up with my self care or my household activities.
I know you probably hear tons of these life stories and I apologize for going on zbout mine. I guess my question to you is more like looking for suggestions on what I can do proactively to avoid the going down the road towards surgery path.
Anything ideas would be greatly appreciated and looked into if at all possible.
Thank you to you and your staff for doing what you all do to help so many people to live the best life possible.
      Aloha,
      Elaine S.
