- We bought ourselves a new Satellite Navigation Unit, a Avtex Tourer Two from the Caravan and Motorhome Club Shop, replacing our previous Falcon Navigator aka Mrs. Sat Nag.
The Avtex Tourer Two is specifically designed for Motorhomes and Caravans, the user is able to enter dimensions and weights of the vehicle and trailer, assisting the driver in avoiding low bridges, width restrictions and weight limits. Other features include voice control, route planning, traffic and weather alerts.

I now have the Sat Nav on a Garmin Friction Mount. This one
amzn.to/39RWa4Y
The Avtex includes a location of all the UK club and 9000 European campsites built in, live traffic reports, on route warnings, speed cameras, lane guidance, voice control, points of interest, hands free phone, links to reversing cameras, lifetime maps and updates and much more.
I bought my one and used it to go to a private campsite in Northern Ireland. I had to enter the post code and address. But was taken me on a route across mountains which lucky for me I new was very unsuitable for caravans. After seeing your video I feel more comfortable using it for my main caravan holiday in England.
I always say that you should never trust a sat nav without checking the route first.
Really very good. Despite (or maybe because of it) being a physicist, I live with the ghosts of the past, using mixtures of damp maps and a more savvy partner. Your approach is very much a belt and braces job. For that alone, I must salute you.
Hi, both, great video very informative, looks an excellent Sat Nav, will look forward to seeing you use and comment on it on your travels x
Thanks Bob, great look at this. Nice bit of kit. 😊👍
Great instruction s Bob Jenny, just made me update mine now , 45 mins 😂great top for the downloads 😀by the way the picture quality is great ,
We got this model from the CAMC shop last year having tried to update our Snooper without success. Can’t claim to be experts, but we found it very easy to use on our caravanning holidays last autumn. We were unable to tour over the winter this year unfortunately, but found the unit to be accurate in its routing, responsive to changes in traffic conditions (especially useful when assessing how long we could stop for a break and make it in time for our ferry to IoW). Also easy to change between caravan and car mode when visiting places when on site. Have learned a few things from your video, however, so thank you.
Thanks, thats great to know.
We have the same one in Oz , brilliant bit of kit , fitted with All our sites . Also love the where youve been feature gives you the date distance route etc .
Great thanks for showing this..I needed to know it has the trip planner in it.
Marvellous technology. I remember a time when voice recognition was in its infancy. I had a device...which if I remember correctly, was also a Garmin, required me to pronounce a list of words. It took an age to complete the list and I was really happy with it. However, two weeks later, I had occasion to use it again and it didn’t recognise a single word I said. The problem was that when I did the original set-up, I was suffering a heavy cold and my voice was very nasal, so I had to perform the whole routine over again. You live and learn I suppose. Great video, thanks.
I don't think voice recognition has moved on that much. I tried talking to my car phone voice command today, hopeless.
Great video, both of you. Made my husband update his
We bought a Tom Tom camper edition as our original garmin led us astray a few times they are all very good especially with the van detail being added so you don’t go astray.
I had a Tourer 1 and ended up selling it after a year as I found it confusing to use. The routing didn't work very well either and I constantly updated it thinking this might be the problem. Ended up with the TomTom Camper which is fantastic. Clear and concise instructions, easy to program and use and the routing works. It managed to navigate the van successfully through Rouen in France, which is a feet in itself. Good luck with the Tourer 2, hopefully they will have ironed out all the issues I had with the 1st version.
Bob, we were out for a walk today and were looking at a caravan park getting a winter makeover in one of our local villages. I couldn’t wait to tell you what we saw as i was tickled by it. Brilliant fully serviced concrete bases with the usual power hook ups but each bay had a little shed next to it with a flushing toilet and sink in it. I thought you’d be interested!
Sounds great. Which site?
Bob Earnshaw www.angleseycaravanparks.co.uk
Thanks for this. We've got the same one and find it very useful having the club sites in it, together with the dimensions of our motorhome. Wish it was a little bit louder... Let us know if you find it how to turn the volume up. 😊
Thanks, volume is third button from the left on the main screen at the bottom. Do you mean it does not go high enough?
I found that if my satnav was too close the dash cam (both using GPS) that the satnav would loose satellite connection and not regain it unless it was powered off and back on again. Great video!!👍👍
Thanks, I did try switching it on and off, but still had problems. Just got a bit long in the tooth I guess.
Great piece of kit. My Burstner has an inbuilt Pioneer head unit with campsites on it, but the Avtex looks much to be so much more flexible and complete. Might have to look into one of those. Thanks for this useful video xx
Had a look at this Sat Nav but went for the Garmin camper 780 instead as it comes packaged with the Garmin BC 40 wireless camera for the back of the caravan
It’s got us thinking. A few Amazon comparisons will be done - there is a newer model, we’ll see if it is worth the extra. Will do some research and see how streaming music from the phone integrates (or not) with the Garmin and how best to integrate both with the Fiat/Peugeot default radio. Pete & Kaz 😀😀👍👍
I don't think you can stream music to it, there's no audio output. It links to the phones for calls.
Hi Bob. I've been using Garmin Sat Navs for years. Think they are great. If you download Garmin's Basecamp product onto your laptop you can then use that to plan routes (easier on a bigger screen) and then send the route to the sat nav. Enjoy. Steve
Thanks I will try that. Jenny would like that.
Bob Earnshaw It’s dead easy once you get the hang of it. You can add via points for your main stops and shaping points to force a route down a particular road. I caravan so I’m very fussy about the roads I use and it really works very well indeed.
Just a tip for people considering a sat Nav for their Motorhome use and or Caravan. I would avoid the cheap Chinese ones you see on eBay and Amazon. They can be very slow if you make a wrong turn to recalculate and are prone to losing GPS. There reason is Cheap electronics. I drive a 44ton Articulated Truck for a living. There's not much room for error if you get in to a dead end etc, try looking for somewhere to spin a 60 foot truck around in a town etc. I currently use a TomTom pro Truck. This allows for the vehicle profile to be set and altered as needed ie change of trailer length etc. I also use it for my Van and Caravan which are around 13.5 m when coupled up. I have used Garmin and Snooper and they are all good. It's worth spending the extra on these brands. Most of the Chinese stuff works of Google maps and you really need to be connected to your phone as a WiFi hot spot. They also offer stuff you don't really need like Radio, MP3 player, photo store. So my advice spend on quality designated Sat Nav brand they very rarely let you down!
Thank you very much for some sensible advice there!
Hey Bob, great video and clear initiating process, thank you!
Have been thinking of one of these and keen to hear how you get on with it practically... 👍🏻
One question; you whipped through the addition of the Camp & Caravan Club sites using Windows - do you know if it will do the same with Apple stuff?
And, when you were setting a location and running through the options, I did not see the C&CC list you uploaded showing on it?
Thanks for sharing with us, cheers, Rog... 👍🏻 😉 🐍
There is a POI loader for Apple too, if you Google "POI loader for Mac updates - Garmin", you'll find it. The C&CC sites go into a Custom POIs folder on the unit.
Bob Earnshaw - Thanks Bob, most helpful as ever... 👍🏻 ✅
Hi Bob, what was the mount you use for the Garmin, I think I saw it fixed to the pop up on the dashboard? Thanks
I fitted the Sat Nav to the tablet mount on the dashboard, it sits on top of the rubber fingers on the bottom of the mount.
I was wondering ,because you got the CMC/C& C maps if it directs you to their recommended approach routes when getting near to your destination?
Not sure at the moment, I will find out as the year progresses. It should avoid narrow roads and low bridges on the approach.
Hi there, you could have bought a Bus and Truck sat nav because they allow you to enter dimensions too and are about £40 on eBay, I have one and they work great, and they use tomtom maps.
Dave B, I use mine for driving National Express coaches all over the country, I’ll post a link asap.
Hi Bob we've eventually gone for an auto sleeper Buford duo auomatic same layout as yours pick up in march can't wait .god bless. Gill and paul.3doggies.lilly.rosie.alfie.
Cavalier king Charles.hopefully see you one day.xxxxx
Great choice, lovely Motorhome. Have fun!
Hi Bob thanks for that i’ve got an Elddis 155 good wood 2017 model it’s got the cradle in and the lip on the top but how does your sat nav hold in the bottom ?
The sat nav has a groove on the bottom and the rubber of the holder bottom clip sits in the groove. It feels fairly secure there.
Jenny sounded a bit defensive when you introduced Kate. Maybe there's a Graham. I think you are in Southport (from the screen).
Hi Bob, is the cradle you have in the front you fitted your sat nav onto,
is that an extra ?
Yes, it's a Garmin Automotive Portable Friction Mount
amzn.to/39RWa4Y
Hi bob where did you get your bottom clips for your cradle that holds your satnav on it ?
They came with the Motorhome. 😊 It is part of the the tablet holder. I'm just resting the sat nav on top of the bottom holder.
I was thinking about getting this sat nav. Just what I needed to know, just one question, does it have Southern Spain and Portugal on the system?
It has the whole of Europe, I put in Malaga, it says it will take 19 hours 38 minutes. Don't forget to use the link in the video description! 😊
Hi Bob, we love your videos. We are thinking of getting a dedicated sat nav for our motorhome, would you recommend this one, or a newer model? I keep looking on Amazon and at different apps and it is just so confusing. We have a 6m motorhome, which although is short in motorhome terms, we have had a few hairy moments down some lanes.
Yes, I'd recommend it. There is a newer version and it's available from Prima Leisure via the caravan club. Club members get a discount shop.caravanclub.co.uk/product/1045641/avtex-tourer-three-sat-nav-gps
I use Waze (free) on my Android Phone even though my Campervan comes a TomTom. It has POI's etc it even lets you know there is a Pothole ahead in the road. I turn off the voice, just have it set to Alerts only.
Does Waze let you know about upcoming low bridges, width restrictions and weight limits?
Hi Bob, we are new to Satnav in the MH. May I ask do you need WiFi to use this or is it only needed for updates and set up ( which I could do at home)? I’d always assumed only GPS was used?
Also, what would be the easiest way to add WiFi to our MH?
WiFi is only to speed up the downloads, you can download via your phone. The easiest way if you want decent WiFi rather than campsite Wi-Fi or free WiFi is to use your your phone as a WiFi hot-spot. A more reliable method is to buy a MiFi (Mobile WiFi router) like the one I reviewed, the Netgear M2. ruclips.net/video/SLRM4mekbNU/видео.html
When you get used to it Bob, let us know how to use the co-ordinates method. Could never get the hang of it on avtex1 tourer. Cheers.
Yes, I will try that, but most places seem to rely on postcode.
I have the CMH avtex 1. When I changed to the motorhome from the caravan I fitted it using the windscreen mount beside the reversing screen at the top of the windscreen and it constantly lost signal / recalculating, I reloaded the software twice, contacted garmin who sent me a reset procedure all to no avail. By fluke I changed it’s postion to the dashboard and it worked perfectly. I concluded that the metal window blind runner caused the disruption. Could it be something like that with your old satnav ?
Thanks, but no, it worked OK and we hadn't moved it, just started losing satellite signals.
As you are at home for a couple of weeks Bob I take it you’ll be painting then .!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure I can find a video or two to do....
I have this sat nav. Bought it last year but only used it once from Fife, Scotland to Dorset last August. I have a caravan. I found it a bit confusing setting up my combined car and caravan details. I did eventually get it but then once on site, when I wanted to visit places just in the car I was loath to change it back to just car because I was worried I wouldn't set it right for my journey home. I'll need to start practicing again soon for going awat later this year. Maybe once you've got to grips with it yourselves you could do a video on setting up sat nav for your motor home plus tow car. I imagine it would be a similar set up for car plus caravan/trailer?
It has Icons for different types of vehicles, you change change between motorhome and car, or car and caravan and Motorhome and Caravan. In Settings, Vehicle Profile, click the + symbol to add other vehicles. Choose the type of vehicle from the list at the side.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Thanks I'll have another try.
Bob iv just watched the video on your sat nav that looks a good one just a quick question does it have sites in Ireland and could you let us know what price it was thanks greg
Yes, Ireland included. Costs around £340....
We have the Tourer 1 but never used the voice control. The phone message alerts were distracting at first. Be interesting to see what the realtime differences are between the two. Apparently you can obtain a Chubby Brown voice if you ever fancy an alternative experience😂
I have turned off the phone calls through the unit. The van's radio already handles hands free.
I'll have to buy a new motorhome now then Bob
Bob new to motorhome just a question do you still have your old sat nav and would it be for sale Regards John
No, not selling it, as it wouldn't pick up satellites!
After watching this Trev wants a new sat nav :o) so do I ,(especially as you can enter the size of your motorhome in it ) .
Oops, sorry about that.
Bob Earnshaw Lol Bob!!:0) Thank you for the vlog and demonstration .
Hi Bob, following your review we bought a Avtex Garmin at the Peterborough show last week for £279. Only disappointment is that you cannot link it via Bluetooth to an iPad or tablet only a phone and useage is very limited.
I'm not sure why you need to link it to a ipad, but thanks for the info.
Bob Earnshaw: for the same reason you link it to a phone but a larger screen. Thanks for the review Bob.
Hello Bob. We're looking at moving from caravan to a motorhome. And just wondered what is the benefit of a Euro 6 B
It's 705% cheaper on VED (Car Tax) Have a look at my latest video.
Thanks Bob. I've just watched your latest video and understand what you and Jenny have explained. Thank you very much Bob
Hi Bob. Thanks for this. I see that hdew camera are selling the Garmin Camper 770LMT-D EU online for £255. Assuming that it's an easy job to load CMC and CCC POIs, are you able to say what extra do you get for the additional £83 for the Avtex?
The Avtex Tourer Two is actually the 780 model, which is £300 - £317 to start with. I suppose the advantage is that all the CMC POI will be there already downloaded and won't be hidden in the custom POI folder. Some people may not be comfortable with downloading and installing POI files. It already includes: CMC sites, CLs, and Trailer Park's free parking places, NKC rated campsites and stopovers, ASCI sites.
Hi Bob, great video, one question, can you just navigate using the map, like put your finger on a destination instead of saying where you want to go or post codes, this is our top contender and would like to know if we can do this as we do this currently unreliable sat nav app on the phone. Thanks
Yes I can, I just open the map out and tap on where I want to go, the town or road comes up and I click on Go!
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Thank you so much Bob, hope you've enjoyed your travels after lockdown, look forward to your next instalment.
Hi Bob. I have a Garmin unit. Do you know a way of navigating so as it only includes major roads only. i.e. no single track lanes?
No, not yet.
In navigation, custom aviodances, you can "avoid road". So I suppose you could add the main roads you want to avoid.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Cheers Bob - I'll have a look
Hi bob, can this unit be powered by the usb instead of the 12volt?
Yes, it runs off a USB lead, from the 12v USB adapter provided. You can charge from a standard USB A to micro USB lead, which is also provided.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo thanks bob
Interesting Video Bob. 7 months on what are views on this sat nav? Has it taken you down any lanes / roads that you were not happy with?
I need to do a follow up on it, but it's done nothing weird on routes.
Hi Bob,
I have the 770LMTD & the standard Fiat tablet holder. Mine won't fit in the holder even without the cable installed. Can you say whether they have used a thinner case on the 780LMTD which is the only way I can see it would fit. Cheers.
It is sitting on the top of the bottom fingers of the cradle, not inside the bottom fingers. It seems to be secure there because there it a sort of lip on the sat nav.
Cheers Bob I'll try that.
Hi Bob did you just want an upgrade from Falcon as i have a one and wondered if it let you down ?
It never let us down over 5 years old, but from what I understand there are different GPS satellites up there, so I think it was struggling to find them easily.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo thanks for reply I bought new one last show at NEC not iused it much but France this year should test it well
Hi Bob, nice video thanks. During the software update part, the wording indicates that it is a 780, but later you state you believe it is a 770. Appreciate if you would clarify exactly what Garmin unit it is based around. Many thanks.
It's the 780, which is the updated version.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo many thanks Bob. Apparently the 770 only shows 2D maps and is Garmin smart watch compatible. The 780 shows 3D maps but is not smart watch compatible. A while since you made the video, so what do you think of the 780?
Just bought one of these but cannot get the voice commands to work on all of the files, eg: Find Town. It comes up with the message: Not available with British English! As far as I can tell the language settings are all correct and I have downloaded the UK & Ireland maps and completed software updates. Any Idea what I’m not doing?
Sorry I don't know why that might be, not had a problem, but I do have to speak slowly and clearly.
I have tried that but no joy. Will have to keep digging! Great video though!
they changed all the gps sats about a year ago, i had the same problems withe the two tom toms i had they still never worked even after i did updates but they were about ten years old so now redundant. so better off withe new one so much more facility's
Yes, maybe something like that, we did start to have problems last May. Built in redundancy I guess.
Hey Bob, could you share the caravan and camping poi files?
The Avtex Tourer Two Caravan Club edition comes preloaded with Caravan Club Sites, but the Camping and Caravanning Club Site POI download is on their website, if you are a member you can download them from the bottom of this page. www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/helpandadvice/travelplanning/sat-nav-device-top-tips/
Are you still using this sat nav? We're looking for something we can set dimensions on for routing purposes.
Yes had it for three years. There is a tourer three version now.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo Thanks Bob, great videos by the way. We've been finding the approach to various sites videos informative for researching where to go while we're getting used to towing.
You can do a simulation demo Which you could do so you can look where they going oh so how do you have a video
Xcody sat nav Circa £40 on ebay allows you to put in the size perameters. Works a treat 7m 3.8tn motorhome. Also loaded in ACSI sites. I too tight to pay £332 !!
Whatever works for you!
Hi Thomas, Are you still using the Xcody sat nav with your motorhome and how well does it perform?
Hi Bob , now you have had your New Motorhome Sat Nav a while, are you still happy with it ? Has it ever taken you on a route that was not suitable ? We are new to Motorhoming and have a van similar in size to you. We also tow a small car on an A Frame . I am in the market to buy a specialist MH Sat Nav Unit as the fixed one in our Ducato takes us down some very narrow unsuitable roads . Any advice greatly appreciated . Thank you .
I need to do a follow up video on the Avtex Tourer Two and there haven't been any occasions when it's taken us somewhere unsuitable. We sometimes doubted the route it's taken us but it's turned out fine.
@@BobEarnshawMoHo thank you Bob , very kind of you to reply . Love the videos we have learnt so much . Thank you once again. Steve & Anna
Nice sat nav there guys could u tell me what sort of price range r they please. Kev
I paid £332.
Thanks Bob and Jenny
Can’t find a POI loader that works on a Mac and I do not have any Windows devices...so can’t load any caravan site data
That's not good, you need a friend with Windows.
I assume you tried the Garmin one? www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3697
Yes, doesn’t “see” the usb attached device to download...not the end of the world
I have the Garmin Drivesmart 61 (smart - now there's an oxymoron), and recently visited York Rowntree site using the downloaded POI's from the CMC Site. The POI location is flawed, as it is positioned so that it would navigate you down a narrow terraced street (Vine Street) which is a dead end with only a pedestrian entrance to the site. You would then have a very long reverse up this street with little or no chance to turn around before you reached the main road. I always research sites before I arrive, so I did not fall foul of this, but I'm sure many would. It makes me wonder how many other locations of sites are incorrect and could possibly lead to awkward situations and as such I would not trust these. The POI should clearly be at the entrance gate to the site. I bought my Garmin as I was frustrated with my previous TomTom, but the bizarre routing with the Garmin makes me wonder if I made the right choice.
Yes, we found errors in our previous sat nav, they may all use the same incorrect details.
Hope this doesn’t mean we’re not going to loose the one and only Jenny satnav also 🤗🚐
No chance of that. 😁
Hi Bob Jenny
How much for your old satnav
I was only joking, I'm not sure it's in working order.
Ok let me know bob

5yrs ago Tech and now big Diff utr old one would be classed as Ancient how Quickly Technology moves on
Im sure theres a App or download fir Diff Voices inc Celebs
Good informative Vid
I got the price of the end of it
The links are in the video description.
I almost chocked on my beer .. £332 seriously ? Is it worth that ? Am paying £15.99 to Tom Tom for my android phone. Ok it's got all the sites and stuff but you can get all the on google and puch in the details on Tom Tom . Am lost as to why one would pay all that money. That's a month on a camp site.
Don't choke on your beer! As long as you're happy with your choice. I prefer a dedicated unit, I never got on with TomTom or Copilot on my phone.
I used to use TomTom app on my phone but can't put in the dimensions. When using it locally & knowing where the narrow roads were, I had to add stops to the route to avoid them. Wouldn't be able to do that when traveling. So I have just bought a TomTom camper - it routes around all the narrow roads. 😊
The voice on a sat nav driver me crazy, I turn it off and just use it via the pics.
Are you going to make a video making Jenny redundant as her services are no longer required, before you do make sure hospitals are in POI.
I wouldn't dare 😁👍
Poor Mrs sat nag 😂
Looks great Bob but think it’s a bit to big especially if you have to window screen mount it.
You would have to be mindful of the law regarding anything within 75mm of the swept areas of the wiper blades
would cause a hazard and restriction of drivers view to the road which could lead to a on the spot fine.
Think if anyone interested in buying one best to look at the reviews on Amazon.
Thanks for the comments. I'm not mounting on the screen but on the tablet holder as I mentioned. I had looked at many reviews on Amazon, mostly they were favourable.
Poor Mrs sat nag 😂
