    As I checked on the photo on looking north on Schaefer Road, south of McNichols (6 Mile) Road in the business district on October 1958, workers for Public Lighting Commission just installed a newer GE M-400 Luminaires street light fixtures, and accepted 400 watt Mercury Vapor Lamps with longer arms (brackets) with 2 cables for supporting to the poles, which replacing the old style incandescent lamps.

    I remember going to Big Thrill Factory in Minnetonka back in 2013 and I could hear the sounds of those. There was about 24 of these on the parking lots The store was once a Kmart.

    For a 1960s it aged like fine wine. It’s one of my faves & definitely looks better than the LEDs that’s made today 😍

    Westinghouse started the clamshell AND cobrahead fixtures in 1946 (first installation, officially released in 47) and 1957 for the cobrahead. The remote OV-25 was introduced in 1954, 3 years before the integrally ballasted version came to light. The Form 109 was released in 1949, and the M400 in 1959. I love M400s but the OV-25 will always reign supreme. It was the OG, after all. Westinghouse innovated heavily throughout the last 100 years in so many fields, street lighting is no exception.

      Did Westinghouse introduced the Type OV-25 with remote ballast Luminaires back in 1960. It is half the length of 1957 or 1958 Westinghouse Type OV-25, flat bottom and a ballast inside the unit? Westinghouse Type OV-25 with remote ballast is measured at 18 inches in length, and Westinghouse Type OV-25, flat bottom does measure at 36 inches in length.

    • @vintagefancollector1436
      @vintagefancollector1436 4 месяца назад +1

      @@davidtosh7200 the flat bottom and generations until 3rd measure 39” long. The OV-25EB came out in 1954. It was just called the OV-25 until 1957 when the integral ballast version came out.

    The grey version came out mid-60s and introduced the M400A Powr/Door at the same time. They switched over to the shallow glass from around 1967 to 1984.

I think I might collect more again, especially insulators. I think I might climb some of those poles to get the rest of the insulators next time..

    Awesome vid and light fixture. You just need a transformer now. You get get ones online that have a 120-277 primary and use them as autotransformers to tap any voltage you need.

    The first generation of ge m400 came remotely ballasted because there’s 2 ge m400s in my city here in Texas there located in Haltom City TX and have a remote ballasted made from General Electric and it said to run a GE m400 fixture that is remote ballasted according to the description of the remote ballast that I have and they have a deep glass lens and no latch on the push to open button most likely that they are from 1959

    I see typical single choke ballast here, sticker says 220V/50Hz, this fixture was import to other countries, where is 50Hz electrical system?
    On 60Hz mains lamp is underdriven because ballast for 50Hz have higher reactance on higher frequacny
