    Over the last few weeks, spending just a couple hours each day after work, I've been disassembling, doing Bondo dent repair and primer painting, and sanding my truck. I final finished the sanding last night, and today I've got the whole day off to clean degrease, do all the masking and then hopefully get the whole three coat Raptor paint job done. I've watched a lot of RUclips videos to guide me through the whole process. I'm really glad I found yours this morning. You've done a fantastic job explaining and demonstrating the whole process, and pointing out the common pitfalls. Thank you for the help, and wish me luck. I hope my results turn out as well as yours did.

    I'm converting my 2003 Ranger into a "Raptor" with the Fiberwerx one piece front end and bed sides. I'm also doing Raptor Liner (as they have sponsored my car audio demo build), in the factory yellow, as this made the most sense of a DIYer without a paint booth.
    I have studied a LOT of videos for applying it with various tips and tricks. Without a doubt, yours is the most comprehensive video out there for the Ranger and honestly, any vehicle can benefit from it.
    Thank you for taking the time to do this!

    Great video I'm getting ready to do my Tundra. I've already raptor'd my bed from sanding priming masking and shooting took about 12 to 15 hours by myself. Its been 6 months and its held up very well. Clear coat is flaking off and Raptor will be cheaper than a traditional paint job and I can do it myself. One of the easiest things I've ever sprayed. If any one is considering a Raptor Project its a lot of work but its worth it.

      I don't mean to be stupid but what's a super charger do?

    • @RangerShop1
      @RangerShop1  2 года назад +1

      @@07LUTE70 it’s like a compressor for our engines. Or like a CPAP machine you see some older ones using to sleep… just pushes in a bit of extra air.
      It compensates for heads that don’t flow very good, exhaust that is a bit restrictive. Just helps the engine to breathe freely. Same principle as a turbo charger, but a supercharger doesn’t have to spin up to put out, rather since it’s attached to your engine belt as soon as you step on it it’s there, no boost lag.

      I’ll have to do a review in a bit. So far I love it, no fade at all! Cleaning is a bit tricky but I use one of those foam guns, let it sit then blast it off with a pressure washer. Looks good enough for an old Ranger.

    It turned out really well. This was a really awesome informative video. I picked up the same HVLP gun. Though I am curious why you used the HVLP gun? Most people I see use the HVLP are going for a smoother, less textured, finish. The included Schutz gun gives a nice texture similar to yours.

    • @RangerShop1

      I didn’t buy the adjustable gun so I can’t speak to that. But i practiced with the undercoat gun and couldn’t get it to be a nice smooth coat, especially for the jambs where the weather strips seal. So I already had the gun, it was a cheap 30$ gun so figured why not do both.

    Bondo is good enough, you do not need a glaze coat because this is a thick coating that will hide some issues especially 3 coats. actually 100 grit sanding would be fine. This type of coating REQUIRES a mechanical bond its not chemical.

    • @RangerShop1
      @RangerShop1  4 месяца назад

      It’s definitely a good paint to learn on, very forgiving. I’d still recommend taking care of any issues before painting… paint doesn’t really fill holes. According to raptor instructions 120-220 grit I’d stick with their recommendation.

    Here’s a tip; Clear Coat the raptor lining with a matte auto clear. I’ve done multiple vehicles and “things” with U-Pol raptor and have simply explored various methods.
    I love that boring of the Cheap gun!! I noticed you didn’t mention Thinning the raptor with 3.5% reducer for the HVLP!
    Also I prefer to 5% Color Match with tintable auto base…… I’ve done this multiple ways: mixing reducer in my paint as if I were laying down a regular base than mixing that with raptor, and/or just the Tint, or Tint and Activator……
    Straight tints the closet color match…..the other methods added a cool shade 1off for a wrap around to cover minor body repair and prevent future issues(Michigan road salt)……. Or whatever….custom 4by, Lawn Mower, Axe Handles…… when your painting line up or hang the Extras in the booth and Rock & Roll-ITS CHEAP!
    My favorite cheap total paint job; I shot the entire truck with HVLP 2.2 twice…..
    Let it harden……created a brake or two tone line with a 8” compass all the way around the bottom masked that off and shot that with the Shultz Gun, pulled my mask and covered it with Matte Clear……. A Bad Ass sub $400 custom truck! Another cool piece was a side by side which I free handed a cool ass fade with my modified Schultz gun- shrunk by 1/2 the orifice, way low pressure…… lay it thin and flat over the HVLP. Matte Clear to cover all shading variations and helps to wash everything off the texture. Hope I inspired some creative juices to boil!!
    Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for the very informative video very well done. The truck looks great. What size compressor would you recommend to use to be able to keep up with the guns? Because I have a 2hp 20 gallon and was wondering if that would suffice.

    • @RangerShop1
      @RangerShop1  2 года назад +1

      That’s a bit light I think… I used a 2hp 30gallon but if you sprayed when it was colder and just waited for the pressure to build back up it might work. For the hvlp gun no problem it’s the texture gun that uses a lot of air.

      Holding up great. I’ve had it off road in some super narrow bush roads. Comes out without a scratch.
      It is harder to wash…. With my old paint the rain would just wash it for me…. Now I need to really scrub it to get all the crevices. Definitely more work.

    Also, did you have to thin your Raptor mix for the HVLP gun or was drilling out the tip to 2mm enough to allow it to pass?
    I'm so glad you showed some of that basecoat texture because that's the finish I'm looking for. More of the matte smooth finish other than the high texture. That's the cool thing about this system is that you can customize so many different ways! You can even clear coat it for easier cleaning if you spray it withing the first 24 hours!
    And remove the tape before it completely dries! OMG....so important.....don't ask me how I know!!!
    Also, I don't think you mentioned the hardener being added and the work time....unless I simply missed it.

    @troyl5498 Год назад

    Now, if one could overtop that sandpaper finished Raptor application with an attractive, smooth, viable and _durable_ 'clear coat' (after all, fluid dynamics alone suggests that microcavitations from a rough surface moving thru air induces greater drag, thus reducing coefficient and fuel efficiency), _now_ you might have something. Driving a rolling sandpaper strip does not seem ideal, imho. Thanks.

      That’s tough it depends on what you want out of the vehicle. Off road or something completely different then I 100% recommend it. It’s cheaper for sure, way more durable and very forgiving to spray. The downside is once done you can’t really go back. It would be so much work to sand off! 😬
      I’m going to use this on every off road vehicle I get.
      Total for me including the Hvlp gun and raptor to do my canopy and inside door jams I used 11 bottles but had about 1 3/4 left over. Cost me around 700$ Canadian. That includes my sand paper, acetone, masking plastic etc.

      Sorry I missed this question. If it’s bad I would recommend sanding it down to bare metal. Then spray it with epoxy using an HPLV gun.
