Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing

- Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms-with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

You basically have to take out a loan to pay for these tests. They are VERY expensive. Like mortgage payment expensive. I went to a functional medicine doctor and paid $350 just for the initial consultation, then was told I needed a $950 blood test, a $800 fecal test and three more toxin & metal tests totaling $3800! These Doctors should give us a heads up on the cost of these tests. They are very enthusiastic about them but need to realize their sick and desperate patient has to PAY for all those wonderful tests!
I agree. Humans tests are as expensive as animal (vet) tests and vice versa. I'm afraid illness is nothing but a business, no matter how altruistic some doctors appear to be.
If they identify the root cause for your illness and you get well it's worth spending a lot of money.
@@g.warren963 Can't spend what I don't have. I guess us poor people will have to keep suffering. 🤷♀️
I did a functional medicine Dr. He found gluten sensitivity and Caisine allergy. Most folks are lactose intolerant, but Caisine is the protein molecule of milk! At first, changed what I eat, this made a big difference . But after a while the symptoms returns, now Dr has a lot of expensive tinctures and supplements . No more. I noticed he has moved his office to a wealthier part of town
@@meman6964 Here's a thought. I went through all that gluten stuff 38++ years ago and changed my diet, went gluten/dairy etc. for Crohn's and food sensitivities. Look up High Carb health. com. Two guys who discuss diet for IBD....but, it will give you ideas about how to work with food. They have great suggestions about food. If one gets back to basic, clean, proper food, it clears up so many problems, no matter what they are. Every little bit of info helps.
This is all so great... and I'm happy for the people that have the money to do all this. I'm a senior on social security. this is NOT going to happen, no matter how much I want it to. In this new economy [writing this in 2023], I'm having to work a second job to pay the OVER 50% of my income going to RENT and rent only. Hi Doctor Mark.
It's wonderful that you can do so much to help sick people, that go to there GP over and over for years and get no where. I'm one if them. I live in the UK, and it's difficult to find some one like you. I have been ill for 40 tears following a Hysterectomy at 32. I have been a guinea pig for Doctors for years. It's been none stop drugs of some kind. 6 years ago I had breast cancer. I have CFS and Fibromyalgia. I have tried every diet treatment and supplement available. For three years now I have been loosing weight, big amounts. I was over 11 stone, now I'm barely 9 stone 2pounds. I have been treated for Sibo, and so on. But now a scan has revealed concerning areas on both my lungs and my spleen. As I have had breast Cancer, I'm fearing the worst. But I could never afford some one like you. You are not there to help poor people. It's sad, but money talks. I bet you would not see any one that doesn't have big bucks. I would have to sell my house to see you. Every one deserves the same chance.
Dr Hyman you should include resources links in the comments in your videos. Without knowing where to go to get tests or certain clinics that are not like a typical facility that focuses on alternative medicine or treatments, it would make the process extremely difficult.
You can order your own tests if you'd like through places like privatemdlabs.com and others.

Insurance won’t pay. Functional medicine need to be covered. Our heath profits system really need to go back caring.
The only thing that would overwhelm me about this Podcast or blog is the fact that I don't know where to find the tests I wouldn't be able to find a functional doctor in Newfoundland and probably couldn't afford to pay it out of pocket.
Thank you for writing that comment. You have to be wealthy to afford to be healthy! I live in California and I don’t have functional medical doctors that are in my area. Can’t find them, anyway. But I look at these videos with longing, because I have been too exhausted to function, for decades now. But I also know the disappointment t of knowing that it probably costs thousands and thousands to get treated. (I traveled to LA to see a functional doctor and she was pretty bad at it. Some of them get stuck in one healing method, and apply it to every patient, instead of doing this kind of health detective work, like the doctors in the video do.)
The most unfortunate thing about it is, if insurance did start to cover functional medicine then it'd no longer be any good either. The insurance companies via disincentivizing, etc., would tie the doctors' hands. You wouldn't get tested for anything more than you do now... your temp, blood pressure, and maybe a simple cbc blood test if you're really lucky. The system's worst nightmare is having a test show what's wrong with a patient who isn't actively dying/medical emergency within a few hours or days. As a matter of fact, even with positive tests they worm their way out of the diagnosis anyway. So then there's no treatment to give you a chance at overcoming your illness because you don't know exactly what you're fighting.
All we have available is our diet, which is extremely important. But, diet cannot grow new adrenal glands, repair channelopathies, neuromuscular junctions, or tubulopathies, repair other organs like hearts, or remove tumors, or repair genetic mutations. Diet can only do so much.
Darlin’ .....being a newbie myself living in Israel..... I agree.....come here.....they have everything!
Do u know for sure that ur Canadian Medicine doesn't pay for these kinds of tests, w/ Some form of Functional Medicine? Just curious abt. ur 'system', bc. I live in "US" n we're pretty much 'out of luck' trying to get something like this paid for by insurance, Gvt. based or private either. Unless it' a 'fluke'. n Most people here in 'US' think of Canadian Single-Payer as the 'gold standard'. But I had an 'allergist' once tell me that ---"some people are pretty much 'bothered' by everything", n he did tests on me that others hadn't. Here, it was covered by my insurance. Also, Chiropractors often deal in a lot of the same issues that these Dr. Hyman n others on these videos often talk abt. I've had members of my family get relief from health issues that their 'conventional' Drs. couldn't help them with. Also paid for by public n private insurance. Have u seen U Tube videos w/ Dr. Eric Berg, a Chiropractor, who discusses many of the same things that Dr. Hyman n his guests do? I'm not even interested in Keto dieting (too much 'fat'), but I still find many of Dr. Berg's vids. highly informative.

The worst doctors are the Endocrinologists treating and testing for Thyroid. They do not test for the active thyroid hormone FT3 and base it on just TSH and FT4 which is the inactive thyroid hormone. And the phrase “your labs looks good” is what you always hear and yet the patient is miserable. These Endos doesn’t believe in conversion issues and that’s what’s always seems to be the problem with thyroid patients and doesn’t know how to prescribe and test for T3 meds. And yes changing diet makes a big impact to help with conversion and improve one’s wellbeing but ordering the correct and needed tests is very important.
Hi there! I'm just now reading your reply and I'm curious if you know of any other ways to treat conversion issues besides changing your diet?
@@BonaFideWildLife there are many factors that could affect conversion. It could be high inflammation, fatty liver, insulin resistance, cortisol levels and sex hormones. There’s a blood test called Reverse FT3 to check for conversion issues. I love functional medicine (FM)! Although traditional healthcare insurance doesn’t cover or include these type of doctors, many corporate healthcare insurance plans now offer HSA’s that will allow an individual to put $ aside in this account to cover and assist with other medical/healthcare expenses. I know this because I experienced it myself.
How does that work?
I believe, similarly, that 'Able Accounts' wh/ people on Social Security n maybe other disabled persons can have set up, allow $ to be put in them to pay for Med. care that public n private insurance don't cover (n Also other needs).
Found a functional doctor in Arkansas who is also an oncologist. Checked out her website, Does not accept insurance! Why?
I am 64 positive At age 40 Lyme and was treated, also tested positive for rocky mountain fever. Took me, several doctors, to get this diagnosed. Then when I still was not feeling good the doctor swore to me he never said I had Lyme Disease! Called my insurance and asked if Lyme was in the records. Yes, he had. Now why did he do that to me? He yelled at me about how he had tested me for malaria on and on. He was clearly frustrated and had a belly full of dealing with me.
So he sent me to another doctor in another state. Who went so far as to tell me Missouri and Arkansas do not have Lyme disease. Told me I was too young to be feeling so bad. And sent me on my way. I had given him a brain scan that had been done and he took it threw it on his desk, and never looked at it. It was all so weird I pretty much gave up on doctors.
So for 20 years now I have complained of bone pain, joint flu-like symptoms, and stomach issues. I also supposedly have a blocked 100% carotid artery in my left neck Which was operated on. when it was 50 - 75% blocked, 5 years later, and ultrasounds on the neck every year. Which funny thing was the first year it was right back to the 50-75% level. Nobody said a word. Year 5 is 100%. That was 13 years ago.
Feel at this point I must be on the verge of death. I feel so awful I look forward to death. At least the pain will be gone. I do not have a life to speak of cause I feel and look awful. My hair is falling out in clumps now. I suffer the same joint pain, nausea and throw up weird pain in my upper tummy, and rib pain that is just off the charts. Luckily for me, rib pain passes pretty quick, feel weak, Yet my latest attempt with the general GP said all my blood tests are normal. Does any of this sound normal to anyone? Memory issues, hearing issues, shall I go on. ugh
I'm sorry, I feel sick every morning for hours, feel I'm getting worse every year it's hard to deal with life. I'm 62. 🙏🙏
Sadly our local GP docs say that the functional medicine doctors are out to run a bunch of tests that aren’t necessary to find something or supplements to sell patients.

Key Question: how are you making your services available/accessible to common people like me. ? I have almost 60 to 70 % of the conditions being described. I am so willing to undergo an analysis. The city i live in in north Dallas has a handful of functional medicine doctors. None are covered by insurance, some refuse to take insurance. So my option is to pay 1000 of $ for consultation plus a monthLy subscription, all out of pocket all of which I can’t afford because my premiums are so high. Is functional medicine only for the super rich?
Yes. But it's not the functional medicine doc's fault. Maybe some day, before we die, it will trickle down to us common folk, with life-destroying, chronic, incurable illness. Sadly, if insurance did start to cover functional medicine it would no longer be any good. The insurance companies would not allow the necessary tests.
You basically have to take out a loan to pay for these tests. They are VERY expensive. Like mortgage payment expensive. How does the average person afford a functional doctor ? I am my own doctor now but never been to medical school . Most of my life I had IBS -D and prescribed many meds that gave no improvement. After much research I began taking magnesium and eliminated gluten from my diet - no more IBS-D and no more traditional western medicine
Thank you for shedding light on this! What I learned is that everyone should be healthy with all the advancements that we have. It's a shame we have a culture that promotes unhealthy lifestyles, a sick-care model, and unaffordable tests.
Dr Hyman - the patient described at 10" (Canyon Ranch patient) - could you ask your presenting partners to actually detail the names of labwork a functional physician would to do understand causes of this patient's issues? In general, getting a sense of lab test names - examples - would be helpful for your audience. Thank you
How can I get help. I've been sick for so long and I keep getting the run around; same test over and over , yet still normal. I just want someone to think outside the box. I feel like I'm slipping away Everyday 😪
I have kidney problems and am prediabetic but my labs always come normal. When I first started having issues a few years ago. I was constantly going to the restroom especially at night. I finally went to a doctor and they found traces of protein in my urine and I was prediabetic. But I've had blood work done 3 times and everything comes back what they consider normal. I did go to a different doctor and she was surprised no one discussed my blood sugar with me and said I would be a full blown diabetic in a few years.

I don't know who could ever afford this. Maybe it's functional only for rich people. Do you have to fight with insurance companies for every test?
The more ‘noise’ people make to government about needing this type of medicine the greater the chances of change happening. Please everyone who feels frustrated that this is only for the rich, write your member of parliament, your government representative and ask why we are not embracing this kind of medicine. If the majority of countries had this kind of medicine readily available years ago we wouldn’t be experiencing the kind of tragedy we are now during this pandemic!
Yes. From what I've found, insurances companies site lack of research that proves functional medicine is better than conventional medicine. You're right that many would not be able to afford this type of care. Poorer people are always disregarded when it comes to their gestalt health.

Chronic pain is difficult to diagnose too. I actually requested my doctor to do an MRI scan and he want to do it for my spine. Then the result is spinal cord compression from herniated disc. Even after the operation I still have chronic pain and nerve damage.
Try a chiropractor? Sometimes it doesn't work but I know people who got great relief.
Hi! I was developing chronic pain and taking 2 Advil a day despite never popping OTC meds for aches before. I chalked it up to having a physically demanding job (even though I did it in my 20's) and to getting old (pushing 40's). What finally helped was taking Essential Amino Acids. Something in there (not histamine) took away all the aches and I didn't need Advil anymore!!! I did more research on why it helps and it turns out that AAs + Collagen + Saw Palmetto extract is a synergetic combo. I don't know about saw palmetto but the collagen helps my joints!! I hope this helps you and anyone else out there with chronic pain!

So how can I get these tests done???? I am retired, 60+ and need tests. On Medicare. Any way I can get these tests?
I never had chest infections. Maybe one in my life. Only lasted a week. Then 4 years ago. I got chest infection for a whole year. . I was just given antibiotics. Then again scince last year had it again for over year now just been given antibiotics again
Question is...where do we find a Dr to do these tests??
Check out if.org or Google “functional medical doctor” and then add your city to see if there is one near you. If not you probably can arrange a virtual visit with a fm doctor online.
Thank you
I get blood pressure spikes and no doctor knows why.
very informative much appreciated
Acromaniceum cenophila(spelling?) This can be obtained as a probiotic from In-Pendulum( spelling?) Probiotics labs
how about a list of labs we can ask to have done
So would the CD57 test be low in people with disseminated VZV?
What do you do for people who are lower income?
Wish insurance would cover these kind of care!!😔
Mostly, we suffer for decades, and eventually die. If you're lucky, and early enough in your disease, you can feel some better by having a very good diet. It does help.
@Cyril, um, no. If one is sick, old/retired (after working hard their whole adult life) and living on disability, I can assure you, firsthand, one is not going to movies, ever, nor eating out, nor buying cosmetics. 800 to a thousand bucks a month only goes so far. Remember? Rent, electricity, doctor co-pays, medicine, gas, water, phone, food, insurance, clothing, gasoline. Yeah, nothing is left over. As a matter of fact it leaves ya in the red. Think before you speak things like that, please.
@Cyril it must be nice being privileged enough to post a comment like this. There's a whole other type of society out there, look it up if you're curious. You may start by googling "extreme poverty " and see what pops up.
@Cyril - Wait till you get really sick, can't get disability insurance because you have pre-existing conditions, and your cash-flow drastically decreases, and you are self-employed. Everything you just said, will become null and void. I know millionaires who have become bankrupt and you never know what life has stored in front of you which will change it in a blink of an eye.
Around 8 years ago, my son developed a tic in his eyes. After a little research, we set up an appt to rule out turrets. Thankfully, the pediatrician suggested we give him magnesium....it didn't take but a couple of days, and his tics went away. This doctor was allopathic, and I realize how fortunate we are that she did not prescribe medication as a first step!! My son still takes magnesium to this day...whenever he stops taking it for a few days, we can tell.
I could not understand the name of the probiotic Dr. LePrine mentions at 14:57. Could anyone help me with the name, please? Thanks
Pendulum probiotics
@@davidanthony5717 thank you so much!
Hi, Dr. Hyman. I really enjoyed the video. It's the first one I've seen. A while back, I purchased one of your books, and I'm a big fan of yours. Pleeeeeease, keep up the wonderful work. By the way, has anyone told you you look like Jon Stewart? He's a real cutie. Take good care, and be well.
Would you please discuss bronchial asthma with Dr. Todd LePine ?
Your voice blipped out when you were talking about the immunoglobulin test that you do?
I'm so confused. Dr. Mcdougal says insulin isn't that much of an issue if you eat low fat. Others say insulin is everything and you have to eat fat and meat to keep your insulin low. I don't know who to believe! Any thoughts?
Eat less bad fats and more good fats (Omega-3). Like lots more Omega-3!
thanks
Informing us about products we cant afford to buy or take ling enough then if it's not fixing our symptoms were out all that money. Drs are influencers now, insurance is a joke on us. God bless you all 🙏
Please can you recommend a Doctor that does these sort of tests in the UK?
So talking about this is not doing us any good....if there are no doctors out there who are going to test for all the things you mentioned .....I have just received my results ‘all within normal limits’ after having gone to dr for constant palpitations and large muscle pain in legs and constant fatigue .......I am on 100 mcg levothyroxine for my Hashimotos thyroditis ....what do I do now....where do I go .....who do I see....I’m in Myrtle Beach area.....you’re scaring me
Don’t let this information scare you...knowledge is power!! When I first learned of functional medicine, it made me feel excitement knowing that my sickness wasn’t all in my head!!
Did they check your ferritin levels?
I know where you're coming from and understand completely....I'm sitting up in bed here in Tasmania, it's 12.37 am and I'm worried about my heart because of palpitations and not being able to sleep....it's not every night but when I over do things in the day, I'm hyperthyroid and take carrbrimazole so I'm the opposite of you🤗...I'm seeing a new doctor this week and will make an appointment when I can to see a heart specialist to get a complete check....it costs a bit but I just save for it.....it's kind of funny because I had a stress test a few years ago and everything was fine, I was convinced there must be a problem somewhere with my heart, I went away and not worrying about it anymore got rid of the symptoms and it was a relief....so try and not worry, talk to someone about how you feel, find a different doc and get another opinion, just talk to people who can assure you and find you some peace with how you're feeling. Its no fun is it, but do your own research, that's what I did, are you able to see an Endocrinologist!?....they specialise in the thyroid but a lot of it can be diet, gluten, lack of magnesium etc....I swear by magnesium for nerves and sleep..look after yourself the best you can, eat as healthy as you can, find things that relax you in the meantime💐🌹and also check about how much medication you're taking, it might need to be tweaked etc....just a thought, but please look in to magnesium 💐🌹💐
Talking about our personal stories is all we have because conventional medicine is sick care..they don't want you well. They want you taking prescriptions for ever. No one died of Valium deficiency. It's up to you to help you...we must get the information and help yourself. Listen to the stories and learn...
So basically only the wealthy can get help. Awesome.
That's why the poor stays sick or die...no money.
Phlabotomy...what’s that?
phlebotomy - blood testing.
What if I feel great but my lab tests don't quite reflect that situation.🤔
Doctor, what are the possible causes of served weeping eczema? I live in Vietnam and haven't taken antibiotics in a very long time.
Where is your center located? I couldn’t quite make out what you said Dr Hyman
I made out @32:00 The center for functional medicine, the Cleveland clinic, the ultra wellness center. Also IFM dot org . I hope that helps.

I was sick for 35 years with no help from the medical system. Ray Peat PhD was the only only one who finally sorted things out. Ya my tests all fell in the normal range. BS. It was a very simple fix.
So what was it?
Once you find the bacteria then what?
Loved this one
when you talk about depression , its not only medicinal you know? a lot of times its because people are being bullied or burned out or some emotional need unfulfilled.
Many other episodes discuss the difference & interdependence of situational depression & organic depression as a symptom of dysbiosis. Their neurology specialist is also trained in psychiatry. You can hear many interviews with him on the channel, too.
Thank you Jesus that you are always available to all who call on you night and day for whatever reason. 🙏
Very informative podcast. I just like to say that I'm a little bit reluctant on calling conventional medicine "traditional". Because in my opinion conventional medicine is just symptom relief and is something created by the western world. While traditional medicine can go to the root cause of the problem and exists for centuries in some parts of the world.
I laugh every time they say heavy metal...🎸⚡
Functioal medicine is well, crap. I've been 2 5 of them and they told me to do this that and the other thing. I complied and nothing. Nothing. The latest was that I have candida. I asked my gastro how you test for candida. You do the scope down your throat. Not blood. They take a biopsy and go from there. I spent 1000s upon 1000s of dollars and 5 years later. Nothing. There's a reason insurance doesn't cover these Dr's. Often just NPs and PAs. But that's my personal opinion ion. Tread lightly.
why doesn't anyone talk about Fibromyalgia??? it's a nightmare...
They do on lots of podcasts. I have FM so I listen to almost all of them. If you listen carefully you will hear these doctors repeatedly speak about patients coming in dx with FM. Sometimes it’s Lyme disease other times it’s different issues causing FM symptoms! Same thing on Dr. Chatterjee’s channel.
Is ozone purifier help to remove some bacterial and mold micro toxin from the environment and from the body?
I am also longing to see a good functional doctor just about now! I think I have mold toxin in me from moving things around in the garage last month and then 2 weeks ago again not knowing the black dusty stuff on the ground was probably black mold!!
Now feeling head-pressure and congestion & with a froggy brain and don't know what to do since I can't afford to see a functional doctor!! Very scared and very sad. How can I detox mold out of me?? Please help?
DO HAVE A CLINIC IN CALGARY?
