My mate was fishing with a pulley pennel and was having the same issue, it seemed to be our hooks that were snagging up. Taking the pennel off, later on in the session, seemed to make the difference. Shame I didn't figure that out before I hooked the big fish! Glad you like the videos👍🎣
Hi Nathan ... tough session for use guys what with the weather and those snags, use deserved a few fish, really enjoyed this one, get some studs for your boots though I was nervous just watching use ... take care and tight lines 👍
Hi Stephen, I've got some screw-ins that've used on my wading shoes so am going to add them to this new pair, it wasn't too much fun constantly sliding around! Glad you like the vid! All the best and tight lines👍🎣
I use big paperclips for softer baits.Sick say 15mm through the eye, facing the back.Wind rest down shank of hook, and leave a similar tail near the bottom. Sick those in the bait then lash to the hook. I use that when pennels snag up, and the wire stops the bait spinning and keeps hook point proud.
That's defo the best way to present the firmer baits like green crab and squid, stops it getting pulled down masking the hook point, and it helps presentation on the soft baits like cart (and a few others i won't mention, lol) where it doesn't matter if the hook point is covered as the fish smash it flat when they take it.

@@SlippyLimpets I like a mark a short distance south, called the Doctors House at Howick, some lovely deep gullies in the area holding the odd, good cod or 3!. Not a place to fish when there's a decent sea running as the rocks slope literally down into the water and the waves can run right up the rocks that you're standing on. Hope you have a great Christmas and new year mate. 👍👍🎣🎣

My pennel rigs normally pull through the kelp but think singles might be the way forward when it's really rocky. You must get some canny fish over there?
A fish, no matter what size, makes the session. Get them rigs made up at home, when you have 5 mins spare ho ho.... Beach shelter, you can put a long sleeved teashirt on, ho ho..... Another excellent video, Stay safe.
Haha yeah, those shelters look canny but I do like being out in the rough stuff, having one would make filming easier though. I need to get into the hobbit of tying loads at home but wasn't expecting to destroy so many. Tight lines mate👍🎣
Unlucky on the good one Nathan, it's the worst aspect of fishing the kind of ground we fish, looked like it might have been a proper lump given the bend in rod. If you couldn't get it up clear on that rod it wasn't coming up quicker on anything else, mine is my go to when im using the fixed spool in the proper heavy stuff. I think it's just structure the fish head for that cuts the snood. I've had quite a few fish that i have already lost on the same session with the big pennel right down the throat and an inch of line sticking out their mouth. That bait mate thing is a rip off of a tool a mate of mine has been using for donkeys, don't think he is best pleased with the lad that got them made up,lol. We use them made from plastic pipe, easier to cut to the dimensions and shape you want.
It is Rab, you win some you lose some! Must admit, I felt like it could have been a double, but then the ones lost always are😂 I thought it might have been rock that cut the Snood, but the it was cleanly cut with no abrasion marks. Brilliant rods though, are you using the MKi or MkIi? I don't know the guy who makes them but they seem good, although like you said, could probably knock something up for a lot less cash!. All the best mate
@@SlippyLimpets I think mine is a mk1 mate. I have a 6 plus bait 15 ft as well, great rod for the Tope, most consistent casting rod i have ever owned, maybe just suits my (lack of) casting style but it puts it out exactly on the intended line every single time and you get exactly what you put into the cast from the rod. Nice robust blanks as well, they can take a few pulled over tripod/dropped on the rocks knocks and keep going no worries.

I'm still thinking about that lost fish 😢 Still, there's always next time. Maybe I should have a trip down south and give the shelter thing a go, i do like a bit of camping😂
Hv had same problem with sakuma hooks snapping over the last couple of seasons mate, changed them for hooks a bought from chimp rigs good quality hooks 👍👍👍
You not bought that bell yet Nathan?, as is now normal when you talk to the camera you had a bite, your mate saw it luckily. Your comments on a shelter surprise me, buy a 'pop up bivvy' we used to use them for archery, they are light and fold into a bag about 2 foot across and 3 inches deep with a handle,. Take them out of the bag stand back and they erect themselves, to put back you just twist them, normally pegged down but you could sew bags on and weight with stones or even leads. There is room to sit up in them, I bought a mini folding seat for mine, keeps the wind and rain off and you can zip up door or leave open.
I normally talk to the camera straight after casting so must have landed the bait on that rocklings head. I'll get one of those bells for Xmas. I don't really want one of those shelters, just poking a bit of fun at our southern friends- the rougher it is the more I enjoy it- and trying to emphasise how different the fishing is up here.
For your smaller baits, I notice you tying them - have you tried a bait loader - Cox and Rawle do a good size on for worm and smaller squid baits. Those C&R hooks are superb.
I tend not to use loaders for worm baits, I feel I lose a bit if scent/juice if worm baits are threaded twice. Not a problem with squid though. They do seem like quality hooks, a bit if a struggle to get through the Splash Down hook clip but no probs in releasing them.
I found this out when I used to take them Ice climbing, almost lost a tooth. Being so chewey makes you feel like you've eaten two each time one is consumed!

shame about the big fish buddy, lost faith in Sakuma's a few years ago - mega sharp but very brittle and really easy to snap the point off them. losta few fish over the years with the pennel hook getting snagged. generally use one hook now.
I walk to my marks if its a hike in my shoes, and take my studded wellies with me on my box. Aslo have an old pair of Salomons with 3 studs screwed into them, works fine.
Sometimes, it's debatable if it's worth fishing such rocks in the dark, as its so easy to lose a one off good size fish via the numerous snags. Also, the spider leads are the same...they are often more trouble than they are worth.
Not sure fishing in the day time would be any better for avoiding the snags, the water was like chocolate! I've always found plain leads seem to find their way into the cracks between boulders, which is why I normally use spiders. This session was strange because it was my hooks that were snagging up and not the lead!
.Thanks for braving the conditions to bring us another excellent vid. Your marks are so different from anywhere I fish. Heart in mouth sometimes lol. Love to see your rod tip go. How do you keep your hands so clean? :-)
You're welcome and glad you liked it! Northumberland can be a challenging but very rewarding place to fish- even if the fish aren't around the scenery and situations can be amazing. Not sure I've been asked that before 😀, After I've baited up I wash them in rock pools/sea and dry them off with a towel
Really unlucky on the big cod there mate it did look a good one from the way the rod jst hooped over I'd say you did the right thing giving it a couple yards of braid and let it swim out which usually dose work or 90 % of the time breaking the rotten bottom out puts you back in touch,, as I say unlucky I've been there myself good efforts tho ps I've cut my rigs down to nothing 2 really strong swivels but small a loop for my snood 100lb body 60 -70 amnesia snood works well 👍👍
Thanks mate. It's because that trick didn't work that that lead me to think it was the one of the hooks snagging up, and normally the hooks bend or snap before my snood does and i get the fish out. I've changed hooks though, so probably need to up my snood strength for this type of ground. 👍🎣
why taking a risk to fish by night ? is there some reasons who i can't understand cause i have never do it ,?? Thanks to answer me , i pleased to see this new video!
Cod actively feed in shallower water after dark, so there's a much greater chance of hooking up. It's not really any more risky fishing in darkness if you're prepared for it- a good head torch and a backup torch is essential. Hope this helps👍
I've never tried them, not too fussed about losing leads with the rotten bottom on, but it seemed to be my hooks that were snagging on this session. Might give them a go though, guess they'd lift the whole rig up
Probably the best live bait we can get but with the water coloured the way it was, the heavily scented bait seemed like the better option. It's a strange thing, I actually like it when the weather is bad, but every now and again I think about the easy fishing in the south. Glad you like the channel and thanks for the comment👍🎣
Thought about this last night and heres a suggestion, by the way I never used more than one hook in rough ground, so to boost the chances of the one hook attraction try this. Never seen any sea angler using this (yet?) but is a standard freshwater method, proved successful especially by carp anglers. OK so we know that it is scent that attracts fish, buy a large feeder, fully enclosed with holes in it, or make your own with a torpedo shape (metal if you can) and attach in line near the hook. Stuff it with anything aromatic, old worms, fish scraps, squid etc etc, more than doubles the attraction power and leads them to your hook. The stuffing needs to stay in and not come out of the holes (unlike FW), anyone tried this? The right shape, in line, actually helps casting, I use it when the going gets slow.
Funny you should mention this David, I've though about this after watching some FW fishing vids, especially in rivers. After a bit of research it seems there's lead and cages made for saltwater that are designed to act like feeders. Could be worth a shot in dirty water, maybe not in clear when presentation counts as well. You might see me trying this next year!
@@SlippyLimpets Sharnbrook tackle in Leicester sell breakaway leads with feeders incorporated they're brill, and you can pop a mini tip light in there with the 'chub' to see where it goes in the dark :)
Could have been the make/type I was using but I used to use circles years ago but found they snagged me up more and impossible to bend out. You never lose a fish and they're not gut hooked. Could give them another go though
I used to use those but found using the splash downs with a rotten clip attached more reliable and they have a bait clip Glad you liked the vid and tight lines!
Hi slippy l watch ur videos and l think ur going to brake a leg on thy rock mark so as l would say invest ur self in a pair of studded vess chest waders it will save u braking a bone in ur body slippy thy marks u fish are very dangerous so please take my avice and buy ur self studded vans boots
Hi Daren, Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I do have Vass waders but waders can be dangerous on the rocks,- they can drag you down or make it hard to get back out if you end up in the water. I've got some screw in studs I use on my bass fishing shoes, and they work a treat, so will add some to the trainers i was wearing on this session. Thanks again and tight lines👍🎣

I found the plains always got stuck in boulders. Still, I had a rotten bottom link but it was my hooks that were snagging in this sesh
Good mark up there mate
My first time in that gully but I'll be back!
I walk to my marks if its a hike in my shoes, and take my studded wellies with me on my box. Aslo have an old pair of Salomons with 3 studs screwed into them, works fine.
I've gone down the screw in route for my wading trainers, so think I'm going to do the same with my rock fishing shoes.
Mint vid mate
Thanks mate👍🎣
Nice vid, volume dropping in and out,not too bad mate👍🏼
Sorry mate, think that was my fault, fished on Saturday night, edited in a rush on Sunday. Next one will be back to the usual standard👍🎣
@@SlippyLimpets I have started using surgical gloves.. bit of a wuss lol...
Normally better for cod to fish darkness
Cod actively feed in shallower water after dark, so there's a much greater chance of hooking up. It's not really any more risky fishing in darkness if you're prepared for it- a good head torch and a backup torch is essential. Hope this helps👍
Great video stopped a few times
Fishing at night at the water's edge on slippery rocks with no PFD's? You boys were making me nervous. But good video since you're safe and sound. 👍
Luckily we're used to this type of fishing but always take care, didn't mean to worry but glad you liked the vid!!
do you never use lead lifts on those snaggy marks
I've never tried them, not too fussed about losing leads with the rotten bottom on, but it seemed to be my hooks that were snagging on this session. Might give them a go though, guess they'd lift the whole rig up
Try a 6-0 with a 3-0 circle hook as your top pennel hook. There's less to get snagged.
I tried a circle pennel years ago and found I snagged more, could have been the hooks I was using though. Will give them another go👍
@@SlippyLimpets I mean use a 'J' hook at the bottom, and a circle at the top.
Thought Rockling were top live bate for cod up your way?
And you don't need a beach shelter do you, you are hard "northerners" lol love your channel
Probably the best live bait we can get but with the water coloured the way it was, the heavily scented bait seemed like the better option. It's a strange thing, I actually like it when the weather is bad, but every now and again I think about the easy fishing in the south. Glad you like the channel and thanks for the comment👍🎣
I wish I had your set up
It's a good set up, had to save long and hard to get it though.
@@SlippyLimpets Let us know how it goes, but need 2 rods for comparison.
@@SlippyLimpets Sharnbrook tackle in Leicester sell breakaway leads with feeders incorporated they're brill, and you can pop a mini tip light in there with the 'chub' to see where it goes in the dark :)
Did you catch anything on the caramel I saw in your bait box 🤣
Just a quick trip to the dentists 😂
Get youre self a good pair of quality studded boots for those rocks.
The one that got away let's just say it was a 10lber lmao
Could well have been, definitely felt bigger than last weeks fish
Try circle, semi circle or even octopus hooks... Much less chance of hook snags mate
Could have been the make/type I was using but I used to use circles years ago but found they snagged me up more and impossible to bend out. You never lose a fish and they're not gut hooked. Could give them another go though
What is cart you are using for bait
Cart is the insides of female eater/ brown crabs 👍
As Charlie said, it's the insides of a female brown crab salted to give it a jelly like texture. Can be a lethal bait
You may not be able to use a shelter but you do have cod , here in the south east we all have shelters but no cod , I know what I’d rather have
I'll raise you a cod for a bass and a shelter😂
🎣🎣
Nothing worse than losing a big un like that, even after all these years I still wonder what some fish were like.
It's funny how the lost fish stick with you/me like that, sometimes the lost fish are more memorable the fish landed!
A always use breakers rotten bottoms so unreliable mate but good video nice catches
I used to use those but found using the splash downs with a rotten clip attached more reliable and they have a bait clip Glad you liked the vid and tight lines!
Upload is stuck halfway through
yes way..somtimes little fish swallow big baits and big hooks... I did say that
Haha, yes you did! Funny thing was, that little Rockling didn't even take the hook, it was somehow wrapped up in the snood
Love a caramel wafer
Hahaha, I was waiting for the caramel wafer to go on the hook
Nowt better for a bit of a sugar rush!!
Might give that a blast next time😂
👍👍💜💜🎣🎣
Thanks mate. 👍🙏🎣
No stream can’t view try later
Strange, seems to be working at this end?
Must have been mine ok now don’t want to miss it 👍
Maybe this is the reason I don't go night fishing, the fear of bumping into Cliff Richard fans. 🙂
Nothing worse in the dark! It was the last thing I was expecting all the way out there!
@@SlippyLimpets I expect they were on a Summer Holiday. 🙂
@J W 😂 they definitely weren't Travellin' Light( I had to Google that)
Hi slippy l watch ur videos and l think ur going to brake a leg on thy rock mark so as l would say invest ur self in a pair of studded vess chest waders it will save u braking a bone in ur body slippy thy marks u fish are very dangerous so please take my avice and buy ur self studded vans boots
