The Secret Summit: Climbing Indio Mountain

  • Have you ever passed by a massive intimidating looking mountain and wondered "Can I climb that?!"
    Well, that happens to us all the time, and one recent winter trip to Palm Springs we noticed Indio Mountain from town and couldn't resist finding a way to get to the top.
    As it turns out, Indio Mountain IS climbable, but there's no easy hike to the peak. It's a 100% off trail climb and scramble through boulder fields and loose rock-filled gullies to top. But the epic views into the Coachella Valley and all the way across to San Jacinto and San Gorgonio make it completely worth it. Plus, who doesn't love a good winter hike in the desert!
    DISCLAIMER: The route to Indio Mountain is not a maintained trail. Do not attempt to summit without proper climbing experience and navigation and safety gear. As always, hike at your own risk.

    ELISE and ADAM, a good morning from France. What a pleasure to watch a great video of your latest adventure, and I am very happy that ELISE has regained her fitness after months of suffering. It is a perilous hike, with hidden traps, but your mastery and caution always prevails. After the woman and man of Atlantis, you are definitely the queen and king of the summits, and the earth is becoming too small for you. I will see you climbing the canyons of Mars. More seriously, happy Christmas and happy holidays to both of you. Kisses... DAN.

Quel plaisir de regarder une superbe vidéo de votre dernière aventure, et je suis très heureux que ELISE a retrouvé sa forme physique après des mois de souffrance. Rattlesnakes....many nights I'm kicking bed sheets in my dreams as I kick at snakes! Hiking a lot in the southwest over the past 20 years; only came across 5 maybe 6 rattlers (and stepped right over a King; friend was several feet behind, stopped and said "Hey, look what you stepped over"). My worse moment, night photography in the Sonoran Desert; finished and started the mile walk back to the car, and I hear the rattle; spotted it with the light, about 8 feet away. Proceeded, 5 minutes later, another rattle; this time I couldn't spot it...just made sure nothing in my path. Really makes the hair stand up.

    That's nice someone put a "register" at the top. Bob Burd sure is a great resource for climbing mountains in CA. Random info: He was at Picket Guard Peak 13 Sep 2009 w/ Rick Kent. I took photos of the register :D
    It was placed there in 19 Aug 1970 by Bob Miller of the Loma Prieta Chapter but has entries copied back to 1963. Oldest person I saw was Bob Pickering, age 70 in 2019. Sierra Peak Section 243 for him. And then he did Kern Point the same day after.
    Climbing down is always the hard part for me. I'm always tired and thinking, "Did I really go this far??"

    Another great adventure, thanks guys! Yes, have to admit, my first thought in the beginning was: snakes! What a beautiful but a little treacherous climb. Some of those heights, especially that one shot of Elise on the side of an ascent, looked quite high and unforgiving. Anyway, stay safe and glad Elise is back on the trail. Speaking of injuries, I’ve been sidelined with metatarsalgia in the right food, sure Adam knows about that with his sports knowledge. Anyway take and be safe!

Hope you are able to alleviate it soon and get back out adventuring -- meanwhile, swimming and biking are your friends to stay in good cardio shape! --A

    There is a reason we use mountain metaphors to speak of tasks that are beyond the realm of the achievable, describing them as “insurmountable.”
    Only a handful of climbers have safely conquered Indio Mt. And this is where we find Adam & Elise rehabbing Elise’s recent back injury. To add a little more of a challenge these two are climbing without the benefits of climbing gear! No harness, no climbing pants, no gloves, no safety helmet, no eye protection, zip-zilch, nada! Just shorts, t shirts, hiking shoes (not approach shoes) and a baseball cap worn backwards by Adam.
    Aside from the challenges any mountain poses, the physical, emotional and possibly financial difficulties, there is the uncertainty of a “road less traveled”. In this case, a 100% scramble path, I’m certain, not many if any have ever used to summit Mt. Indio.
    So I find myself asking the question, why put yourself thru such agonizing efforts to haul yourself up thousands of feet to face the extremes when you can rehab your injuries in the confines of a warm pool?
    The answer is a bit complicated but, to keep it simple I’ll leave it as, they do it because they love it!

This reminded me of some rock climbing I did in Riverside county where I got spooked about the downclimb. I had been so proud to brace myself front and back and wall walk, but there was a lip at the top, and going down it was much harder to get into that braced position. So how do you approach it on something like this? I think I could learn from you guys.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      That's really a great question, and probably the biggest thing we argue about on these hikes. When descending something that's really steep -- basically a cliff -- Adam always wants me to turn around and face the rock like if I was climbing up. I know he's right but i just naturally want to do it the other way, and am still trying to learn not to "butt slide" on sketchy parts. We've filmed a few of our descents in past videos, but it's hard because we also have to be so focused on not falling. Excellent idea about making a dedicated descent video -- we will for sure do that at some point! ❤️ --E

    • @cachelesssociety5187
      @cachelesssociety5187 Год назад +1

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard That's such a problem. On your butt you can better see where your next spot is when moving quickly, but not see the hand holds you may need to arrest a fall. There are other things about it and I'm no expert. I've been there. I've especially "been there" when on my butt on a very sandy cliff where I hardly could scoot without starting an uncontrolled slide. The thing is, for that predicament I'm not sure my feet would provide as much continuous friction, you gotta pick them up at some point. Maybe there needs to be a class by Adam to explain his full thoughts.

Given that it happened in bed after I woke up in the morning and I hadn't done much of anything the whole week before I assume that's probably the case for me. How did you go about choosing your path to take since there wasn’t a lot of info. Was it gut instinct or relying on previous experience? For sure a climb to only try in the cooler months.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      Great question, and it was a combo. One guy did it and made an Alltrails map which was super helpful, but somehow we still wound up in a different ravine. Part of that is based on instinct. Adam looks not only for a route that "goes" but also a route that is awesome, while sometimes other climbers opt for a route that "goes" and is safer. So usually if we get way off route, it's because the beta wasn't totally clear and then Adam led us up some awesome ridge line or something. ❤️

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you for the details! I would probably do the safer route because I can get lost easily. But if I hiked along with someone who is great at navigating then I for sure would try the more adventurous option because of the mystery of what you would see and do😊

      Haha we sure hope so one day, Zach -- maybe once we are traveling full time and able to go do big mountains all over the world. To celebrate we'll definitely have to do a giant group hike with as many of you guys as want to do it! ❤️

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard

      We were intending to loop it, Rob, but when our iPhone/navigation ran out of battery we decided just to retrace our steps instead so as not to risk getting lost. But there definitely is a loop option on AllTrails -- just don't forget to bring your battery charging cable! ❤️

      Yes Kevin! In Southern California our rattlers don't hibernate like they do in most parts of America. It was 75 degrees on Indio mountain -- a beautiful SoCal December day -- and the snakes were awake! ❤️
