  • That one time she slipped into a waterfall....
    Wow, well, even though the SoCal Snowmaggedon kept us out of the mountains this weekend, we can't really complain because all that precipitation means the waterfalls are flowing right now! We took advantage of the beautiful southern California winter weather and headed to Santa Paula Canyon to hike to its famous waterfalls and punch bowls. For hikers wanting more of a challenge, it's actually possible (with class 3 climbing across slippery rock) to continue past the main waterfall and up the creek in search of the legendary waterslide. Let's just say that waterslide definitely lived up to the hype - this was one perfect winter hiking adventure!

    Man oh man, or should I say Man&woman, you impress me endlessly with your spirit for adventure, guts&determination. If you are able to accomplish these feats in the natural, what could you do in the spiritual? Fission is the basis of atomic energy. Fusion releases even greater energy. I believe Elise was the woman "taken/formed" out of Adam's "side".

      Thanks Orlando! Endless fun is exactly the right way to put it. We might have kept going down that waterfall forever if we hadn't started shivering so bad! If you ever want to do this hike, we have a tip for you to prepare for the cold water: we've been doing cold plunges at the gym to get ourselves ready for this kind of thing, and it was a huge help. You just start going in for 30 seconds or a minute, and then build that up to about 5 minutes. Then when you go in cold natural water, it's not quite as shocking. ❤️

      That's a pretty accurate description, Robert! Adam went down it a few times from progressively higher elevations before he did the first long slide just to make sure it was relatively safe, but there's no question coming down something that fast with rocks so close there to the right still wasn't entirely prudent. Hellaciously fun, though!, and definitely worth the risk. Glad you enjoyed this one -- we really were feeling positive and upbeat the whole day, even when we kept getting lost off trail! ❤️

      It was SO fun. And Adam really took care to make sure it was relatively safe by going down like 4 times from ever-increasing heights until he got to the final point we were riding down from. So by that time we were pretty sure we could do it without bonking (though it was pretty close!).

    I love you two, such fun to share your adventures. Yes you are lucky to live where you do. I'm in England, it's cold, damp and grey ! However, I've spent a lot of time hiking, camping( tent) and climbing in the four corners areas since 1992. That slide reminded me of Slide Rock State Park near Sedona in Arizona.... very busy though ! I hope Elise didn't hurt her coxcys on that fall, that would be painful, guess the cold water might numb the fall ?

      Martin thank you for the tip on Slide Rock! We'd never even heard of it, but now are definitely going to visit it on our next Sedona trip (we love Sedona, and go pretty much every year). I fortunately didn't get any injury other than a little bruise on my slip, but you're right -- the cold water made it so that we were feeling no pain whatsoever! Meanwhile, hang in there with the British weather. We're thinking of coming over there in the summer of 2023 (after doing some Alps and Dolomites adventures in summer 2022). Adam loves England and lived there for several years when he was younger, so he wants to take me to all his favorite places! ❤️ --E

    Awesome! Maybe next time bring more grippy shoes in your packs and change shoes as you need to? I totally would have gotten in by the waterfall... have been in the Merced when it was so cold that it felt like your skin was burning. Pretty fun. Not sure that I would have done the waterslide without watching someone else first. Once broke my tailbone on a slide. Took over a year to fully recover. The people who arrived at the slide after you didn't have good intel on how to stay on the trail back? What a blast that looked like!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 года назад +1

      Ya John this definitely might have been a good time to bring the grippier shoes! The tailbone was definitely a concern for us too, but Adam went from a low level first and then progressively higher so we knew it wouldn't be too bad. There was no one who came to the slide after us except for one guy we passed one the way up (who happened to be a huge fan of the channel!) who we told what we were doing and he decided to follow up behind us. But pretty sure he was even more clueless than us about the route finding on the way back! It's all good though -- there was some bushwhacking but it was so, so worth it for this crazy fun experience. This is definitely one we're going to go back to! ❤️

    So cool! I live in Ventura County and this is one of my favorite trails. I was trying to figure out where you guys went off-trail after ascending the steep section to the right of the main waterfall haha. I’m so glad you guys got to enjoy the slide despite the frigid water! I witnessed a friend of mine veer out of the slide and bounce off the rockwall to the right, luckily crashing into it feet first before going in the water, and he was okay. I once climbed that rockwall with the rope/ledge to jump into that pool, and across from that there’s also a huge rope swing which I’ve seen other people use.. There’s a few backcountry campsites too, you might’ve seen one of them as you went past. There’s also one right before you guys got stopped by the cliff/before the slab scramble next to the falls/rope section, which crazily is also the starting point of an outdated Forest Service trail called Last Chance Trail that leads above the canyon on the hillside across from where you guys were cliff-bogged, ascending up to Hines Peak/Topa Topa and making for an 18-mile RT hike. Thank you guys for making this beautiful video and sharing it with the world, and for always giving great advice. Wishing you guys many more amazing adventures!

Ya we definitely got off trail a few times, but somehow that made it even more fun because it added some interesting challenges. Very glad you liked the video -- that means a lot coming from you since you know the hike so well! All good fun, though I was worried about the boulder jutting out at the bottom of the slide. I have done many gorge walking trips leading groups up and down them and yes the water was very cold indeed. Wetsuits were always worn as we used to be in the water for over an hour and you really had to think about cold water immersion. I use to wear canyoneering boots, drained well, very grippy, and with toe protection. All the best to you both for 2022.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 года назад

      Thanks Iain! You were right to worry about the boulder. That was Adam's main concern too, and just to put your mind at ease he did three different test runs at progressively higher starting points to make absolutely sure we would clear it before we started going from the higher starting point that we filmed from. As for wetsuits, they would have been really nice! But we have been doing 3-5 minute cold plunges after our workouts precisely to prepare ourselves for this kind of thing, and that was extremely helpful. Of course, we still started shivering after we'd been down the slide a dozen or so times, but it definitely prepared our bodies so that at least there was no shock to the system from the cold water. Canyoneering boots sound great -- we're thinking of getting some before we try the Subway in Zion. Hope you have some great adventures in 2022 -- looking forward to sharing lots more of ours with you! ❤️

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard The trailhead is a dirt road for about 3 miles then another mile up the canyon to the falls, which gets pretty sketchy right away. If you google the area, you'll see there is another trail leading down to the falls from a road above. It might be possible to scramble or bushwhack up to that trail and then run all the way back down to the beginning for maybe a 12+ mile total, although I have not heard of this being done. Black Star Canyon has rumors of all sorts of supernatural events. If you google it you will find weird stories about ghosts and other things. Might be a good place to try out! I think a long sufferfest loop in that area could be done.

    You two are inspirational. Love your videos. This video reminds me of being in the Laurel Highlands in my younger days. Meadow Run near Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania has tons of water slides like this. (Much easier hiking though.) In the spring snowmelt they were lots of fun. And the water was ice cold.

      Oh my gosh Annie, you must do the toe socks. Since I started wearing them I never get blisters, even on epic sufferfests. I generally wear them underneath a pair of Darn Tough regular socks, so two layers, and it works like magic. Though they work well on their own too -- I wear only the toe socks with no extra layer when using approach shoes, and I still never blister. ❤️ --A

    How cool, my sister raved about this for months so i drove up and we did it Dec 26th after a night of heavy rain. Most folks turned around at the first crossing, it was shocking how much water was there. Unfortunately, we didn't find out there was more past the main falls until we were halfway back... another hiker mentioned it. I do plan to return to see the "4th pool he mentioned" it was an amazing place. If i could only get my sister to hike earlier in the morning we would have more time. We barely got back to the parking lot at 4 pm. At least now i see what i missed. Thanks for the recon :) To answer your question about swimming it was a heck no. Just too cold for me. Also, that flow looked like about as much as you would want if sliding down, you looked really close to the rocks toward the bottom. Would more flow have made that too sketchy?
    BTW, we got lost also and spent a good hour+ bushwhacking at a snail's pace. It did add to the adventure though. We tried to avoid water crossing #3 by going up river to look for a dry crossing.... big mistake. You just need to plan to get wet on this one... bring extra shoes and or socks.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 года назад +1

      Andrew thanks so much for telling us that! We were feeling pretty stupid for getting off trail and having to bushwhack as much as we did, but it's good to hear that it happened to you as well. It's just tough to navigate that area in some places. We think you are right about the flow speed of the waterfall. Adam's head was really close to that overhanging rock even as it was. If he'd been going any faster he probably would have bonked it. But with that said ... SO fun! We think you should definitely go back maybe in summer when it's hot and give it a try! ❤️
