"Full many a flower is born to blush unseen. And waste its sweetness on the desert air" (Thomas Gray). Amazing, beautiful trip and, again, I learn so much from both of you!
Well done, Tom! Also, quoted by Susan Sarandon in the all-time great movie Bull Durham -- best movie use of poetry ever, because it perfectly encapsulates the whole idea of Kevin Costner's character. Glad you liked this one -- we love exploring new routes in our home mountain range! ❤
Another amazing video. The way you two stick to the rocks your shoes must manufacturer their own gravity. The chemistry between the two of you makes your videos so much more enjoyable. Can't wait for the next one.
Haha thank you -- it's funny you say that, because after the hike we realized we'd forgotten to mention that we'd both opted to wear our approach shoes to make sure we'd have really great traction. The shorts were a questionable decision, but the approach shoes were definitely a good decision! ❤️
Whoa! I’ll have to watch this again after I pry my fingers apart from covering my eyes the first time. One of your most dicey ones yet you two. Just know I’m definitely not encouraging this, but you guys are amazing!
You know we can't resist a good dicey climb Larry! Thankfully we felt pretty good on this one because we've been practicing lots in our downtime. So next time maybe you can give your fingers a rest and sit back, relax and enjoy without fearing for our lives! ♥️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard After following you guys for so long I don’t think Adam has it in him to be that mild mannered in planning and filming one of your adventures. After all his middle name is “Dicey”. 😃
Ok, I see we're back to the heart attack (for me) hikes, Elise & Adam. The joy and laughter at the beach was the best! Adam, I totally get it w/the wildflower obsession--me too! I was going to ask about the short pants--good job, Adam! Another great adventure. Love you guys.
Haha thanks Bob! March-May is my absolute favorite hiking season because of all the flowers -- amazing. We gotta go do the famous poppies hike down here one of these years. There wasn't quite enough rain this year for it to really explode, but when we get a rainier winter let's plan it ahead for you guys to come down, and then we'll drive boo and mama boo nuts taking flower pics! 😂
Woweeee! This was one of my favorite videos you've done. My adrenaline and heart was pumping overtime watching you traverse those cliffs!! Thanks again for capturing so beautifully the views, that was insane, your hard work is much appreciated.
Thanks so much, Michael -- very happy that you liked it! This was one we've been thinking about doing for a long time, but we needed a month or so of climbing practice in the gym just to be really confident that our climbing skills were up to whatever we would face. Really happy that it worked out, because it gives us the confidence to try some other things that have sections of class 5 climbing.
We, too, are very thankful to live in Southern Cal. We have passed Malibu countless times and will need to explore the area before the warm weather sets in. I know it's a pain to carry and wear a helmet. But, you may want to do so when you anticipate steep, rocky cliffs. Elise, you may need to reign in your big boy more often. Your newest songs are wonderful! You are very lucky to have each other. We look forward to seeing your next adventure.
Gar you are right on both counts, and we're def revving up for helmet season (and the keeping Adam on a leash season) as we start getting back into some of the really gnarly climbing! ❤️
I had to Google Adam's quotation to learn it comes from Thomas Gray's 1750 "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" and alludes to the often unrecognized talents of obscure (i.e "regular") people. I love that you combine literary education with your sufferfests! You are some very special people ... thank you!
Steven I'm so glad you looked it up -- it's a beautiful poem, isn't it? I love the idea that many or even most of us have talents, even if they never get seen by most of the world. Thank you very much for your kind words, they really made our night! --A
Jamais un genou ou un coude écorché malgré des terrains parfois piégeux ! Votre décontraction apparente cache une belle concentration ; je suis admiratif.
Thanks Dorothy! This was one of those hikes where we were all, "let's go use our climbing skills" and then we were there and we were all, "we gotta work harder on our climbing skills!" A little fear is a great motivator! ❤️
This climb! You two never cease to amaze me! Question…I’ve seen your workout videos and am curious about what you eat to stay fit and healthy as well as being mentally focused. Could you do a video on your foods , meal planning and how you both stay disciplined?
We are absolutely going to do that video, and are starting it this weekend. It is for sure our most requested video, and we have a lot to say about it, so this is the time. Thank you for the inspiration! ❤️
@@cshughes77 right?! It baffles me how Adam is so stealth and I can’t eat a bite of a pop tart without gaining a pound! However, I’m not climbing mountains on the daily !
Thanks Paul -- we're going hard on some climbing/mountaineering prep right now. Been following the 5-minute mile series -- hope your foot is feeling ok!
Thanks Kristen, that makes us so happy to hear! We've been having a great time writing and recording new songs this year, and we're delighted you're enjoying them. We now have 7 of them available for download on Bandcamp, with hopefully a few more to come soon! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I was wondering why I never heard the same songs anywhere else so it made sense when I read that they were your original songs! You are multi talented! I will look into downloading them.
Awesome! Ya we wanted music on the channel and couldn't find what we wanted, so just started making it ourselves and have been having a blast writing songs!
You guys are such amazing athletes! That climb was epic and scary! I always look forward to your adventures! Nice job and amazing videography of the climb and all the beautiful scenery! 💪🙌🔥😎
Paul that is very kind of you to say -- thank you! Very glad you liked the shots from this one. There were some views from those off-trail ridges and peaks that one just can't get any other way but by hard climbing (except maybe for an aircraft), and we were really hoping our sometimes dodgy camerawork would do justice to them! ❤️
Thanks Giovanni! A kiss from Italy is about the best gift we could ever ask for. We love it there, and are planning to visit in July for some climbing in the Alps around Courmayeur. ❤️
So happy to have you here and to know that this is helping bring back some incredible memories. It must have been such a special and different world hiking all these trails during that time! Looking forward to bringing you more ❤️
Hi Elise and Adam, your videos are all so different each time, I never know what to expect, rocky mountains, desert, waterfalls, lakes, etc, and now a snowy mountain top. Well done for getting to the top and enduring those winds. The views were fantastic.
It was super fun, Adam! The only downside was that there were so many peaks on the ridge with sheer dropoffs so we kept having to climb down, bushwhack across, and then climb back up. But in the end, it all added to the adventure and since you already love the Sandstone area we would definitely recommend it! ❤️
Truly perfect weather, Gar! Totally clear, low 70s. Just absolutely ideal for hiking and adventuring. We've lived here for so many years, but still sometimes feel overwhelmed with gratitude and this was definitely one of those days. ❤️
I so enjoy all your videos, the views of California, the music, and you both are such nice people with beautiful spirits. watching your videos always make me smile, I put it up on my large TV to get a better sense of what it's like to be out there in California. That balancing rock looks awesome.
Peter, that makes us SO happy to hear. It's feedback like this that inspires us and keeps us motivated to continue to go out and bring you back the best adventures we can find (although hopefully soon we'll be able to start branching out and maybe make it all the way to you in Ireland!). Thank you for taking the time to share that with us! ♥️
Haha yes sure-footedness -- and in some cases sure-handedness --is definitely key on this one. But the views to the west and north are def the best you can get without aviation! ❤️
Thanks very much, Sam -- we've really started to enjoy dreaming up routes and then actually making them happen, so we should have lots more of that in the future as our climbing abilities continue to improve! ❤️
This was intense and challenging but you guys did it!! 💪🏾 Thank you for sharing, the views are STUNNING! My goodness! Off topic: Elise, your hair is beautiful! And you kind of favor Carmen Electra (in the 90s) to me. You have lovely hair and eyebrows.
Thanks Susan! Diversity is a perfect way to put it, and we feel very much the same way. There's just always so many adventure possibilities. Do we want to snowshoe, or rock climb and jump in the ocean? On any given day for about half the year, those are both viable options! ❤️
How amazing Elise to get home after a long day of work and watching another wonderful video about your incredible hiking adventures... It just bring back lots of smiles in my face... Thanks so much.... 👌🤗
"Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air." ... great poem by Thomas Gray. Pretty much meaning that normal people do great and amazing things everyday but do not get talked about or mentioned.
Robert that really delights us to hear -- thank you! We're doing a lot of mountaineering and climbing training this winter, so hopefully will have some pretty epic videos coming up for you once the avalanche danger has passed and climbing season starts! ❤️
Haha well you're in luck, Jamie, because avalanche season is almost over which means we'll soon be back in the Sierra and ending most videos with some kind of crazy polar plunge! ❤️
Awesome, beautiful, epic. Glad you found a route through. I kept thinking you were going to get ledged-up. And would have to turn around. But your perseverance wins the goal again. Thanks for all the 360 views and the wave jaunt at the end -- so refreshing. PS. I love taking wild-flower photos too. WTG Adam. (It's only human to appreciate that fleeting beauty. ... you know, to take the time to "smell the roses" ... to "gather ye rosebuds, while ye may" to quote Mackenzie from The Newsroom. )
Yesssss James!!! You really do understand, quoting Mac (LOVED The Newsroom, btw) quoting a classic carpe diem poem. The flowers don't last long, but then neither do we, and that's what makes it all so beautiful. We did get ledge-bonked a couple times, but sort of just went sideways and down to the valley and then back up, but remained undeterred!
Thanks very much -- that is great to hear! Our goal from the start has been to try to make the kind of videos that we ourselves want to see, and we like to have that same feeling you describe so it's really nice to hear that it's working. ❤️
Jacob it's one of our favorite areas too, and this route was freaking awesome!!! Next time you go up to Tri-Peaks, try that off trail scramble up that peak that we did about 5-6 minutes in -- the views from up there are absolutely the best we've ever seen in the area -- all the way down into Ventura, out to the Channel Islands, down to Catalina, and East all the way over to Baldy. Just amazing!!
Paul we're so glad you found us!! Really happy to hear you liked this episode, too, because we've been experimenting more with inventing our own routes and really enjoying it. So more of this kind of thing will be coming in the future! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard cool! That sounds really fun and I can’t wait. I’m sure the adventures will be stellar (and you all do a great job in filming and editing).
Thanks Debbie! We really appreciate your positivity, and always feel so encouraged by you. We promise to stay safe -- and of course to keep munching pop tarts on any challenging hike! ❤️
Thanks Monty! We've been working really hard on developing our climbing and mountaineering skills, so hopefully lots more of this kind of thing coming up in the spring and summer!! ❤️
Yes Mary!! We've been finding that as we expand our climbing skills we're able to do some really interesting and spectacular adventures pretty close to home. And just wait until the snow melts and we get back onto some of those high ridges in the Sierra!!! ❤️
It's great to watch you two and a few other hiking/exploring channels, on account of my life long bad back. Them dirt roads just are not possible for me. Or long drives. I appreciate you taking me along on your journeys.
Jay thanks so much for telling us that. It really inspires us to keep doing what we do. That's especially true of Adam, who's had some terrible physical struggles in his life -- including a back injury that left him immobile for almost a year. He's so aware of how fortunate we are to be physically capable of doing what we do, and really loves bringing you guys along on these adventures. We'll keep on doing them for as long as we're physically able! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I wish I could get out there now, but too much going on in Florida right now for me. Stay safe and I will let you know when I'm heading out. Hopefully sooner than later :-)
Thanks Miguel! And haha at the cold plunge - watching it back we couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous we looked. But hey, it did do the trick, and our muscles felt great after!
Wow, I really enjoyed this one you guys. Incredible footage! I'm glad I watched 'til the end - you guys look so happy in the waves. Very uplifting and inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
That makes us really happy to hear, Don. And you're right -- we were feeling so goofy and joyous in the waves. There's something about doing an off-trail adventure when you're really not sure if it will all come together or not, and then when it does it's just such a happy feeling. Delighted that you picked up on that vibe, and enjoyed it -- and now you know you always gotta watch 'til the end! 😂❤️
Hi Adam and Elise, Congratulations ,Nicely done 🎉🎉 What a amazing on those trails . Landscape from near the peak is breathtakingly beautiful I so enjoyed you guys adventure as well 👍👍
Thank you, that is wonderful to hear! We really enjoyed this adventure, and very glad to hear that you liked it because we plan to do more of this type of thing. The great thing about making our own route was it allowed us to seek out the very best views. It was amazing in person, and very glad to hear that it came across on camera! ❤️
My favorite adventure couple is at it again! 👏🏻 absolutely loved this one and what a beeeautiful day to do it on! I am Adam stopping at all of the wildflowers in awe 😂🌸 And of course the most epic ending in the pacific! 🥶 love you too! 😘
Thanks very much, Allan! Most people don't comment on the editing, and we really appreciate it because it's definitely one of the most challenging and time-consuming parts of making each video. Really glad you like it!! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard The music adds a serene feeling that enhances the way these videos envelop my soul. I hope you take the time to watch these videos years down the road or even on gloomier days!
@@alland1732 We're thinking along exactly those lines, Allan --- we see making these videos and writing the songs as creating a kind of scrap-book of our lives that we will hopefully get much joy from looking back on in the years to come.
going iff trail is awesome., and something i love to do even as an amateur., lol., but this was just deadly!!!! that climb looked straight up!!!! Congratulations to you guys and God bless :) AND WHAT A SNACK SPOT!!!! thats what i come here for!!!! the snack spot!!!! lol
Haha yes!!!! And how about that nap spot on Sandstone?!? Was actually incredibly comfortable. God bless, and we promise to keep the snack spots coming!! ❤️
I'm more impressed by your bravery wearing shorts to bushwhack and scramble sandstone than by the climbing :) As a San Diegan, I never follow the coast up past LA, but the parks up there look gorgeous. Looks like an amazing SoCal day! I was gonna laze around this weekend, but this video makes me want to hit the trail. Thanks as always!
Hahaha the shorts were definitely ill advised, Matt! They felt great during the running part, but we should have just carried tights and switched into them for the bushwhacking. Love that we're getting your lazy butt out on the trail 😂
That area is very nice, I did that one last year but stayed on trails. Dicey is always good ...It is nice to have different terrain and work on other skills that may not get used otherwise. The climbing looked like so much fun it got me pumped to go back to Tanriverdi Falls on Sat. Your upload was timed perfectly as I had no idea where I was going Sat but now I do. Thanks for the upload, it is inspiring to watch your adventures.
You know we love a good dicey climb every now and again :) This was pure fun climbing and great training to prep for some of the stuff we want to get up to this summer. And whoa, we had never. heard of the Tanriverdi Falls before, but that looks totally awesome! You've got to report back on that :D
Haha thanks Rick -- it really was spectacular up there! Some of the climbing parts were a bit sketchy, but the great thing is there are lots of potential lines to take for most of the traverse, so people could keep it almost entirely class 2 and 3 if they wanted to (except for ascending that summit block on Tri Peaks -- there's only one way up that!) ❤️
Thanks very much -- we enjoyed the heck out of this one from beginning to end. There's something about just imagining and then executing your own route that's really, really addictive! ❤️
Thanks so much Cynthia! Yeah some of those spots along the ridge were a little sketchy, but don't worry we always test everything to make sure it's stable! 😊
That's awesome! Incredible views from up there. Hope you did the Mishe Mokwa loop trail around to Sandstone or back from it, so you got to see all the new growth and wildflowers. If not, definitely do that next time and stop by Balance Rock too -- it's a cool way to add some beauty and length to the regular loop! ❤
I was so sad when the fires came through there. One of my favorite hikes in the area. Especially at sunset. Very nice to see it growing back now!! Another great hike guys. Thank you!! Hey... I'd pay $50 for an XL t shirt of Adam at an epic snack spot on one side and Elise cannon balling into a frozen lake on another side!! Livehardxlovehard!!! Take care!!
Hahaha maybe we'll make that shirt just for you, Josh! Ya we felt exactly the same about the fires -- there might even have been actual tears shed - but it is so, so lovely to see the area recovering. It really is a gem. ❤️
You guys always make it through these climbs with minimal injury. My legs would be destroyed just walking through those bushes in shorts. Beautiful views out there. Nice job!
Haha, yeah shorts was definitely not the way to go on this one. I give Adam 100% responsibility on that! 😂 Thankfully we didn't get too banged up this time around, which was a nice change of pace for someone as injury prone as me! -E
Don't worry, Myra! We really did emphasize safety on this one, and made sure to only climb up or down things that were below our ability level. There was one awesome and steep rock face that Adam really wanted to try, but down-climbing it would have been too close to his limit so he left it for another time when we have rappelling equipment with us! ❤️
I'm not a climber but I loved watching this. I have hiked quite a lot but nothing extreme. I find going down to be more scary and challenging than going up.
Totally agree -- going down is SO much harder, especially on really vertical features because it's so difficult to see the footholds. It can be a real trap for climbers, because you see something and think, "I can climb that," but then the real danger comes on the down-climb. Very glad you enjoyed the video -- we've been working hard on our climbing and mountaineering skills, so hopefully we can bring you some pretty awesome adventures through the spring and summer! ❤️
Epic Adventure you two! I'll say that in my day, the only "beta" came from the climbing and hiking books, and that your first climb would have likely been my whole day! So that sounds like Gray's Elegy from a Church Yard, though I think I got the title wrong. Probably got the poem wrong too, without checking and relying on my bad memory from 40 or more years ago! Always great tagging along with you!
Jeff that's definitely close enough in our book! Even "Gray's Elegy" would do. Such a great poem, and impressed that you remember it after all that time! Ya we are always talking about how lucky we are to get beta online -- it lets us do adventures that we could have only dreamed of even 20 years ago! ❤️
This one is fantastic guys! You know you're getting your money's worth when your legs are all dinged up, and you've got all the scuff marks up the insides of your calves! La Sportivas FTW! Loved the adventure. Loved the views of this rugged part of SoCal. Loved the music! Well done!! That ocean dip at the end.....LOL. That water is probably, what, 49*F atm? I wouldn't have gotten passed my knees😉
Hahaha ya that ocean felt really cold, Todd. Partially also because of the crazy wind that picked up later in the day. But still, those cold plunges really make us feel great afterwards. Like the whole drive back down PCH from Malibu we felt amazing, so it was worth the 5 minutes of freezing our butts off. Meanwhile, another SoCal trail that you would love to run on -- not the traverse part, but just sticking to the actual trails makes a gorgeous training run with many fantastic views. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I/we know exactly what you mean. Kate and I started doing cryo therapy a year ago. We've taken a few lake and ocean plunges and man! But nothing compared to the icy lakes that E has sampled.👏
Adam and Elise, I really enjoy your videos. You ought to do a marathon run within the boundaries of my small town. I don't want to splurt it out right here. It's super hilly and beautiful, especially right now. Combo up and down paved roads and hiking trails, too. Beautiful like it ought to have been a National Monument, not a far off housing community. Great for long walks and electric biking, for me.
Oooh Jay that sounds amazing! You can always email us with adventure ideas if you don't want to say them publicly. Meanwhile, so glad you're enjoying the videos!! ❤️
If you allow, nature can self heal itself, without human intervention, but alas, we humans poke our nose everywhere. We think we are the masters of this Earth, whereas its just the other way round. When nature shows its fury, no human can stand his ground. Still, we will never learn...that's the saddest part. Those wildflowers, the entire trek route is so beautiful..and that background music..icing on the cake :-)
That's beautifully said, Tushar. That fire was a tragedy, but wow was it amazing to see how fast nature is recovering. Just beautiful. So glad you enjoyed!! ❤️
Just came back from vacation and am getting caught up from your last 3 videos so here come the comments! Lol. Amazing hike and looks pretty treacherous! My question here is why we saw times where you had your Poles out and we're not using them but trying to climb while holding them in your hands.
That was awesome! I was cringing watching you guys scrambling though the sticks and climbing the cliffs with bare legs . . . but you definitely made Alex Honnold proud! Way to go you two!
Haha ya Tom we definitely should have worn pants for this one! But turned out to be a really fun day anyway, and Adam made up for the bushwhacking with that gorgeous beach plunge! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard it never happens always fog. I was astounded. The view from Naciemento Road is like 6000 feet up above the 1. You can drive up from one instead of all the way across Los Padres
Destination recommendation! Rubicon trail on Lake Tahoe or one of the many smaller trails in Tahoe cause there are plenty of beautiful ones… ALSO Jenny lake trail to frozen lake at the top of the mountain in Grand Teton. Best trail I ever went on with my brother and right up your ally🤙🏽
Cameron these are great recommendations! We hiked Jenny Lake once but didn't know about the frozen lake at the top -- that will be a perfect destination when we go back. And Tahoe is also high on our list -- maybe a sufferfest connecting several different trails! ❤️

Epic journey!! I'm off to do the highest mountain in England (highest in the UK is in Scotland) in 2 days, small compared with ones in the US but im so excited!
Wait Carl, isn't Snowdon the highest in the UK? I trail ran Snowdon once -- warm at the bottom and freezing at the top! Scotland has one higher? Which are you climbing? I love hiking and climbing over there -- not as high as here, but certainly just as beautiful. --A
@@LiveHardxLoveHard the '3 peaks' as its known, meaning the highest ones in the UK is snowdon, ben nevis and scafell pike, im doing scafell pike which is in an area called the lake district (cumbria) it goes scafell, snowdon then ben nevis in terms of height, but since snowdon is in wales and ben nevis is in scotland it means scafell is the highest in england :) Cant wait for the next video !!!!
@@CarlStacey Fantastic, Carl! I was blessed to spend a week hiking in the Lake District once (was technically there for a Wordsworth conference, but basically hiked the whole time 😂). What an incredible area -- enjoy!!! --A
That's a great question, and we have not gotten up to Canada yet. But it is very high on our list, and this autumn is a likely time we might get up there. If not this autumn, then next autumn for sure! ❤️
I find if you know you're in for bushwhacking, industrial cotton trousers work a treat, forget shorts, if your pack is sturdy enough, you can lean backwards into the bush, then climb over the flattened mass., This works particularly well for black berries, and bauera rubioides. Outdoors is my happy place, full of fond memories, like bushwhacking up the back ridge behind cube rock, seeing the rock orchids, the freedom to go where you want, something you don't get in the city
Yeah Adam the pants would definitely have been the right call for this one -- thank goodness at least we didn't have to deal with blackberry bushes!! ❤
@@LiveHardxLoveHard when I was a young tacker, we did 8km of wild raspberry bushwhacking, in the nightcap range, they were fruiting, I can still remember dad in his light blue overalls, I forget what the rest of us were wearing, but was great fun,
Maybe it got deleted because I put a link for the hike I was trying to show you but.. You guys are amazing! I was born and raised in Camarillo so this area/Point Mugu State Park is near and dear to me. It’s truly astonishing to look around that basically circle ridge route you guys achieved. And to see some of my favorite hills near CSUCI as well as the high peaks of Los Padres Forest in the background I love going to. I haven’t been able to go out adventuring as much recently so this truly was special to watch…thank you. Also, just curious… I know you guys are probably familiar with Matilija Falls Trail behind Ojai, but apparently for the brave ones willing to do a few class 4/5 maneuvers, it can go much further to 7 waterfalls. This is the only beta I’ve ever found on it but just thought you guys might want to take a look. Thanks again, looking forward to seeing your future adventures!
Trevor that hike sounds freaking fantastic! We will look into it ASAP. That's weird about the link, but it does sound like it might be the reason the app keeps deleting it. Well, if it keeps not working please email it to us -- we love getting beta on other good adventures! ❤️
Levi it was SO fun! There was one giant rock that would have been a truly epic free solo, but it had an overhang that Adam was confident he could get up but wasn't sure about getting down so he didn't do it. But it's in his head now, and we will most likely go back with climbing shoes and gear at some point and give that one a go as well. ❤️
how do u learn about these places? above santa barbara has great hikes too..its that great that these areas werent developed into more housing n freeways? so that must b part of a state park..what an amazing place ,, thx 4 posting ,,,,,that is so kool ,, makes me wanna sell my place n move home ,,, stay safe
That's a great question -- sometimes you guys tell us about things, but then sometimes we just invent ideas. Like on this one, we've run the traditional Sandstone loop a few different times and always wondered if it was possible to climb some of those peaks on the northwest ridge line by Tri Peaks. So from just wondering about that, we came up with the idea to try a full ridge traverse. These ideas don't always pan out (like our unfruitful search for the 7th Pine Lake in the snow), but it's always fun to give them a go! ❤️
Wow! I was stationed at Point Mugu back in the mid 90’s. Spent a lot of time hiking the Santa Monica Mts. How did I miss Sandstone Pk??? I need to get back to Cali to attempt this! You both always inspire me to do more!!!
OMG Robert you would LOVE Sandstone Peak! As you know, we hike a lot in the Santa Monicas since it's our home range, and the Sandstone area is our favorite of all the hikes. And if you do the ridge traverse like we did, you'll have the whole place to yourself even on a day when the regular Sandstone hike might be crowded. And you could come visit Point Mugu too -- can't remember if you told us already, but were you Naval air support back then?
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I was NAVAIR support 93-96. Radio communications tech for a number of aircraft there. I do miss Cali and enjoy visiting when ever I get the chance. Be safe out there!
Great day to be out there doing your guy's thing! Just a quick correction:(sorry, not trying to be a 'fact check fascist') The peak (Mt Allen) and the surrounding surrounding rocks are not Sandstone. They are the same rocks that are found at Malibu Creek State Park: volcanic breccia. Malibu Creek seems to be the dividing line in the S.M mountains. Everything south and east of MCSP IS sandstone and everything north and west is Breccia. Love that you two are out and about. Also, just watched your Santa Paula waterhole video last weekend and was reminded of going down the waterslide and getting channeled into the far right slot and dislocating two of my right toes on the part of the rockwall that dives down into to slide/pool interface. Circa 1995. Keep up the good vibes!
Thanks very much, Jeff! Love that we can count on you guys for that kind of knowledge. ❤️ Wow that's a crazy story from the waterslide -- dislocated toes sounds super painful. We were pretty worried about hitting that overhang to the right just as we launched off the slide into the pool. It was definitely close a couple of times, but sooooooo freaking fun!
"Scary AF" def = "Be Very Afraid" I had intermittent visions of Alex Honnald in Yosemite...! Loved the views of the Pacific and the Channel islands in the backgrounds. I am looking forward to the Q&A video - would love to know more about you two and what you are up to when you are not wearing your SM and SW capes... ;)
Haha thanks Christine! Scary AF and BVA all applicable here 😂 We lucked out with a clear non-foggy day, and those views of the Channel Islands definitely had us curious about checking out some hiking out there! However, both of our cars just blew up on us this past week, which is totally throwing off our hiking plans, but that does mean we may get to sit down and work through some of those Q&As this weekend! -E
You two make me so nervous watching your steep climbs on that sandstone. I feel like the overprotective grandparent, just waiting for you to slip down the rock face. and plunge into the abyss, never to be found again. And Adam is looking much better after his bout with Covid. Love your videos. And for goodness sake, BE CAREFUL!!! 😁
Thanks so much, Phyllis! And don't worry -- we've been in the climbing gym multiple times a week developing our climbing skills, so we're not going to fall on this stuff. And it really has been nice to see Adam getting back to full health and strength -- he was definitely still pretty pekid on Catalina! ❤️
Thanks Jen, so glad you like the song! We call it "Climbing for your Life," and it's available for download on Bandcamp as are a few of our other songs. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thanks. Just purchased. I didn't know you also create music! Really beautiful. May I suggest you add that info and link somewhere under your videos?
Beautiful! I’m going to be in Southern Cali next week, but still trying to figure out an actual destination. Was thinking San Diego, but I love these mountains right by the ocean. This area looks beautiful! What are your top 3 favorite hikes in southern Cali?
That's awesome Steve! And this is a great question. If you're asking what we'd recommend in terms of 3 hiking destinations, I think it depends how far you're willing to drive and what you'd consider to be technically "SoCal". If you want to stay really local, Sandstone Peak, Temescal Canyon, or Mt. Baldy would all be beautiful this time of year and we'd consider those to be SoCal classics. Winter makes a lot of the larger peaks in the area less accessible (for example Gorgonio) but if you've got the skills we'd say they're probably even more thrilling this time of year. Then, of course, if you're considering top 3 in the larger SoCal area, then we have to start including things in the Sierras, Joshua Tree, Death Valley or Yosemite. I fear you've asked an entirely loaded question Steve! 😂 -E
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Fair enough. Lol I’ll actually be heading to Death Valley to spend a few days over there first. Plan on doing Telescope Peak one of those days, but then I want to head farther west and I honestly do not have a clue where I want to end up. Lol I am strongly considering the area from this video. Sandstone peak looks very cool. Regardless, I appreciate your help! You always give such thoughtful responses and your videos have already helped me a ton!🤙🏼
I'll pipe up to say that San Diego County has some really nice hiking. We don't have the 10,000ft+ peaks that you see in the San Jacinto, San Bernadino and San Gabriel mountains, but I'd stack the Villager->Rabbit route in Anza-Borrego over any of those for difficulty and vertigo. (The lhxlh video of that hike was how I found Adam and Elise's stuff.) Whale Peak from Blair Valley is a really nice mostly off-trail desert hike with some light pathfinding and gully scrambles. The Dripping Springs-Wild Horse loop through Agua Tibia is a really nice showcase of SoCal chaparral (including 100 year old manzanita and ribbonwood groves), Coulter pine forest, and oak lined canyons with some great views of San Jacinto and the Santa Rosas from the ridgeline. Just trying to highlight some of the less popular, but lengthier and more difficult hikes in the county.
Thanks so much, and that's a really important question. We are wearing La Sportiva approach shoes here, which is often what we wear when we know there will be significant climbing or scrambling, especially on slabs. They are grippier on rock and really helpful for this kind of adventure. ❤️
Adam and Elise---you have done it again! You have managed to crystallize into one 20 minute video why I go out to sandstone to scrambling. And the infectious joyous celebrating after a well-deserved adventure, I love it. Well done! I've missed your most recent vids because I've been busy scouting some new bushwhacks + gorge scrambles for my group. When I hit the N Malibu area I will have to take that summit block climb at 5:31. Adam, the camera flattens it out a bit---was that up to Class 4, maybe bordering on short Class 5 higher up the crack?
You have it exactly, Patrick. Almost everything challenging was class 3 or class 4, except for a couple of short class 5 moves on that summit block and in one or two other places. But honestly nothing too scary -- a perfect warm up for some of the dicier Sierra stuff we're hoping to do once the snow melts a bit more. Love that you're out scouting gorge scrambles -- please let us know if you find anything that's both challenging and visually spectacular, 'cause you know we'll get on it!! ❤️
You two are beyond adorable, individually and together! :-) I wish you didn't take so many risks in places with no one else around, and little to no cellular coverage. Do you leave your itinerary with friends, who know to call for help if you don't check in by a certain time? Have you considered carrying an emergency radio beacon (an EPIRB in the maritime world)?
Thanks Liam! And yes, on every challenging hike like this we bring a Garmin mini, so that if any emergency occurred we would be able to call for help immediately from basically anywhere. But with that said, we want to reassure you that we train really hard on our climbing skills and never try anything that's above our skill level. Of course accidents can still always happen, but we really try to be vigilant about avoiding the pitfalls that lead to them.
It really did, Cory. It felt very cold getting in, but we're used to that because we cold plunge a lot. And it just really reduces swelling from a long, hard hike so you feel SO much better afterwards! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard - I dig it - I mapped out my own half marathon along the trails of Catalina island and jumped in the ocean after - felt so good and refreshing
I hike that area regularly. There is a route up Boney from the TO side which is a lot of fun. It's called the Mountaineer's route. The only other route up from TO side is Chamberlain Trail. The rock in this area is a combination of sandstone, volcanic and conglomerate. Only the volcanic can be trusted. Gotta be careful with the other stuff. Would have been surreal to run into you two....in my backyard.
That is so cool that you're up there a lot, and thanks much for the tip on Mountaineer's route! We will for sure try that, because there are some big rock faces at Tri Peaks that Adam wants to go back and climb with climbing shoes, and Mountaineer's route will be a fun way to get up there! And will for sure be careful on the sandstone -- that stuff is super crumbly. We also do training trail runs up there sometimes, so hopefully we will run into you! ❤️
Awesome! This is def a great place to test and practice for things like Russell. We haven't done Russell yet (have tried to get permits many times but always failed), but def hope to do it this year, prob after permit season ends. And then, once our climbing skills improve enough, we want to try the Russell to Whitney traverse. But that may be a couple years away!
Omg that hike was so scary and so epic. So proud of you guys. Love your energy and I absolutely love the ending. You guys have so much chemistry. I don’t know why in the world you would wear shorts lol . Btw how exactly did you scrape your knee? Did you slip or scrape it against the rock as you were going down?
Thanks very much -- glad you saw this one it is such a fun adventure basically in our backyard! Ya I just scraped the knee against a rock while climbing. Not a slip or anything, just a slight miscalculation of a jagged edge sticking out. ❤️
Completely agree, Dalia! Beautiful terrain, incredible views, ocean breezes, and so many options to choose whatever difficulty level you want. It's very tough to beat. ❤️
It was an honor meeting you two on this very outing...at the top of Sandstone peak...no less. What an extraordinary day. By the way, Gerardo and I found the woman who lost her credit card. She was so happy...and you know what...she knew sign language. Gerardo and her were communicating perfectly. Jesus Christ definitely set this day up...praise the Lord. By the way, my RUclips channel is "a1ser". It has some of the epic hikes I've been on plus more...though not quite as epic as your guys adventures...ha ha.
Scott! That was so great getting to meet you and Gerardo on the peak. So happy you were able to find the credit card owner, you did a great deed for the day. Thanks for all the good vibes and encouragement. Keep on crushing those adventures, and we hope to see you again out on the trail!
Jim this question made us laugh, because there's always a debate. On a relatively cool half-day hike like this one Adam only brings about a liter while Elise brings at least two. Then sometimes it will get hot and Adam will ask for a sip of E's water toward the end when he runs out 😂. She bet him he would ask for a sip on this one, but he never ran out and she def carried too much.
Thanks so much! So far we haven't had an issue with ticks, at least as far as we know.... However, as I'm writing this, I'm feeling very itchy all over, so thanks for that reminder! 😂 -E
Y'all are CRAZY!! In a good way!! I friggin love you guys. Definitely my favorite channel now.
Thank you -- that makes us super happy to hear! Though to be fair, pretty sure nothing we do is as crazy as the PCT -- at least not yet!!
@@larrywheeler9797 So weird, it's like his parents had a crystal ball or something when he was born!

Such a great question! Also been curious about this as well 😊

Thanks Paul -- we're going hard on some climbing/mountaineering prep right now. Been following the 5-minute mile series -- hope your foot is feeling ok!
Thank you for another uplifting and inspiring video! Also I love your original songs.

Paul that is very kind of you to say -- thank you! Very glad you liked the shots from this one. John that's fantastic it's the perfect time of year! Wildflowers will be everywhere, it won't be too hot but will be comfortably warm -- ideal!! ❤️
Subscribed, growing up, hiking and exploring all these places in the 60s and 70s brings back so many memories. Fantastic videos.
Thanks very much, Peter! We definitely like to mix it up to keep ourselves -- and you! -- entertained!! ❤️
This looks like a fun scramble! One of my favorite spots in SoCal!
It was super fun, Adam! The only downside was that there were so many peaks on the ridge with sheer dropoffs so we kept having to climb down, bushwhack across, and then climb back up. But in the end, it all added to the adventure and since you already love the Sandstone area we would definitely recommend it! ❤️
What a beautiful hike and perfect weather, to boot!
Awesome scenery, looks like a ton of fun for sure footed people! ♥️
Haha yes sure-footedness -- and in some cases sure-handedness --is definitely key on this one. But the views to the west and north are def the best you can get without aviation! ❤️
Top 5 video of yours for sure! It's always fun to see you invent new routes!

So grateful for the awesome diversity of So Cal hiking…..
Thank you!

Absolutely love that poem -- and that sentiment!! ❤

Firdos I knew I could count on you!! I love all those poets with a carpe diem vibe!!! ❤️
Awesome, beautiful, epic. Glad you found a route through.
I kept thinking you were going to get ledged-up. And would have to turn around.
But your perseverance wins the goal again.

PS. I love taking wild-flower photos too. WTG Adam.
(It's only human to appreciate that fleeting beauty.
... you know, to take the time to "smell the roses"

Your videos make me feel like I am right there hiking and running with you and they are memorable too. Great stuff

That looked so amazing and I was happy just to watch but looked a bit crazy
Haha thanks Rick -- it really was spectacular up there! Some of the climbing parts were a bit sketchy, but the great thing is there are lots of potential lines to take for most of the traverse, so people could keep it almost entirely class 2 and 3 if they wanted to (except for ascending that summit block on Tri Peaks -- there's only one way up that!) ❤️
Very nice adventure and traverse

Thanks so much Cynthia! Yeah some of those spots along the ridge were a little sketchy, but don't worry we always test everything to make sure it's stable! 😊
I was there last month! But only did the sandstone peak which is the last peak in this video. That climbing was fun 🤪🔥🔥
This gave me so much anxiety. I was holding my breath. Be safe you 2.
Nice route there, well done.
Thanks much -- we really didn't know exactly what we'd find going into it, but it turned out to be a ton of fun!
Fantastic, as always ! :-)
Thanks Petr -- we'd been wanting to try this adventure for a while, and really happy that it actually worked! ❤️
Awesome.. 👍👍👍💯💪
Thanks Jackie! We had an absolute blast on this one from start to finish!! ❤️
I am amazed how clear it is.
We were too, Dan! Did you see the view all the way out to Channel Islands? Crazy. Was just a perfect day to be out there. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard it never happens always fog. I was astounded. The view from Naciemento Road is like 6000 feet up above the 1. You can drive up from one instead of all the way across Los Padres
@@LiveHardxLoveHard it's right near ragged point sand dollar beach. Past Cambria San Simeon Sea Elephants...
Epic you are Amazing!!
Thanks Guido! Very glad we could show you our home mountain range in a fun way!! ❤️
The vies and your adventures are great. The surging is amazing. Where can you hear, download this music??
Thanks Dave -- really happy to hear you're enjoying the music as well as the videos! Several of the songs are available for download on Bandcamp, under our name: livehardxlovehard. There should also be a link to them underneath our Ukraine Song video. Hope you like them!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard the '3 peaks' as its known, meaning the highest ones in the UK is snowdon, ben nevis and scafell pike, im doing scafell pike which is in an area called the lake district (cumbria) it goes scafell, snowdon then ben nevis in terms of height, but since snowdon is in wales and ben nevis is in scotland it means scafell is the highest in england :)
Cant wait for the next video !!!!
@@CarlStacey Fantastic, Carl! I was blessed to spend a week hiking in the Lake District once (was technically there for a Wordsworth conference, but basically hiked the whole time 😂). What an incredible area -- enjoy!!! --A
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thats amazing!!! Love it
But weather and terrain are always in the mix also. A hill in 90 mph winds is an adventure. Rain Snow....
Have you guys hiked in Canada yet? We have some beautiful trails, especially in Autumn!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard when I was a young tacker, we did 8km of wild raspberry bushwhacking, in the nightcap range, they were fruiting,
I can still remember dad in his light blue overalls, I forget what the rest of us were wearing, but was great fun,
Maybe it got deleted because I put a link for the hike I was trying to show you but..
@@LiveHardxLoveHard for sure, will do! curious to know your thoughts on it. What’s your guys’ email?
That looks like some fun boldering/free soloing!
Elise, share one day your makeup routine. It is incredible how your foundation stays on during all those hikes. No smudging or anything. Super
Haha that's an interesting idea -- perhaps I can talk about it when we do the Q&A video! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard cool, looking forward to that :)
Great day to be out there doing your guy's thing!
Just a quick correction:(sorry, not trying to be a 'fact check fascist')
The peak (Mt Allen) and the surrounding surrounding rocks are not Sandstone.
I've done sandstone and tri peaks the views are awesome! I've always done the micha mokwa trail( idk how to spell it) it's a good moderate rocky trail
For sure! Yes the Mishe Mokwa is a great trail -- very good for both hiking and trail running. And the ocean views from Tri Peaks really are nuts!! ❤️
I really appreciate all the inspiration guys! Thanks. And PLEASE ~ what is that GORGEOUS piece of music that starts around 12:56??
Thanks Jen, so glad you like the song! We call it "Climbing for your Life," and it's available for download on Bandcamp as are a few of our other songs. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thanks. Just purchased. I didn't know you also create music! Really beautiful. May I suggest you add that info and link somewhere under your videos?
@@janevans5088 Thanks so much, Jan! That's a great idea, and we will definitely do it. ❤
@@matt_w All really solid points, Matt. We gotta get back down there soon for some of that stuff!!!
@@matt_w Awesome! Thank you for all the info! Will look into this for sure!
Wow! You guys, amazing! What kind of shoe/boot are you wearing? Thanks for sharing💕
Thanks so much, and that's a really important question. We are wearing La Sportiva approach shoes here, which is often what we wear when we know there will be significant climbing or scrambling, especially on slabs. They are grippier on rock and really helpful for this kind of adventure. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Thank you! so much for the information 🥳🥰🏔🏃🏼🏃🏻♀️❣️💕
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Stay safe you two! I will send you a separate note regarding my gorge scrambles. ;)
You two are beyond adorable, individually and together! :-)
I wish you didn't take so many risks in places with no one else around, and little to no cellular coverage.
Oh man, I bet that cold ocean water felt great after a tough hike (and climb) like this
It really did, Cory.
@@cshughes77 Fabulous!!
I’ve done all of those peaks as well. Have you guys done the east ridge of Mt. Russell yet? A lot of air but only third class, very exciting!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I didn't even get a permit when I climbed Russell. Just when up the Whitney mountaineering route, no rangers...
It was hilarious every time they took me to the beach. FREEZING and one time water temp was warmer than air. In July!
That's amazing! We're always expecting the water to be warmer by July, and it usually is, but even then still feels pretty cold to us!
Sandstone Peak is the best. Probably my favorite hiking in LA County (at least I think it’s in LA County lol)
Great video - What app did you guys use to show your trails on 3d mountains?
Thanks Jason -- very glad you liked it! We generally use Google Earth to do our 3D trails, and download our Gaia recording right onto it.
Amazing hike. How much water do you carry on a trip like this?
Jim this question made us laugh, because there's always a debate. On a relatively cool half-day hike like this one Adam only brings about a liter while Elise brings at least two. Then sometimes it will get hot and Adam will ask for a sip of E's water toward the end when he runs out 😂. She bet him he would ask for a sip on this one, but he never ran out and she def carried too much.
Love your vids. Serious questions though, how do you guys deal with ticks? Did you get any in the past?
Thanks so much! So far we haven't had an issue with ticks, at least as far as we know.... However, as I'm writing this, I'm feeling very itchy all over, so thanks for that reminder! 😂 -E
