Thanks for posting, Brad and congratulations on your climb! Brought back some great memories from when I did it in Aug, 1994. For anyone considering, we went with a smaller pack for haul bag and no sleeping bags. A large haul bag on this route is quite difficult.
Yeah this is a great wall to do in a day, I climbed it my first time in 1994 as well, also did it with my girlfriend in about 6 hours, no haulbag or backpack, great climb.
My god in heaven this is another level of fitness carrying all that gear too. Sitting on the ledge must have been incredible. I was sweating watching this! The scenery is stunning. Glad I got to watch sat on my couch! Thanks for the journey ❤❤
Being having hight phobia, every move you made on that 10' hedge, I felt my legs giving way & thought that if I had been in your place, I would have fallen down. You have great courage... ....I highly appreciate & admire & am in complete awe......... its great to see people like you do exist as such I can't even dream to make such treacherous climb.

as a person that fears heights some of the views and perches you took your breaks on had me shivering. Holy crap how is you can sit over a ledge with thousands of feet underneath you??? I use to climb at Stoney Point with Bob Kamps 25 yrs ago! Really enjoyed the rawness of the footage and editing: refreshing! NATURAL! I felt like I was ON the rock, not watching a climbing video. Well done gentlemen. Years ago, 1993 and 1994, I went to the valley with friends and we did Half Dome, Lost Arrow Spire, and The Nose. That wrapped up our big wall climbing list, but man, it sure was an experience. I went back to ice climbing which was my most favorite climbing experiences.
Its much harder to climb now than when you did it. The best holds erode the most over time. I climbed Half Dome in 2004 and 2019, it was much harder he second time around. Ice climbing is definitely easier, but I still prefer the challenge of rock.
Great job, especially with all the extra gear making it a tougher climb. Be very proud of yourself, not just for the climb, but for the way you present it to those who may never have the want or chance to climb.
@@mikegreco4122 you've obviously never climbed, because you totally missed the point. I've done this climb, it's usually done in half the time it took them..or less ..meaning they had to carry a lot of extra gear. Real climbers would have known instantly what I meant

Insane climb. Congrats! I hiked around the back and was scared going up the cables lol. And, you know that wingsuiter probably hiked up half the night to jump off, probably exhausted from the hike. Badass.

To be able to make the commitment to carry all that equipment and to have the strength to make the complete climb and endure such a strenuous experience is beyond my comprehension. Also, the training one takes to do this starts years before with smaller climbs before this kind of achievement. Hope your lives are safe throughout your many adventures.
I watched my transmission line crew do these sorts of climbs. With heavy equipment hundreds of feet up in the air. I admired them so much but could never do anything but ride in the helicopter.

A very well-done video. We did this route in the 80s and had a blast. Few have captured this climb as well as this video has. Nice videography and editing. The sequence depicting "Thank God Ledge" really gives a sense of what's involved and the exposure. Well done!
I already didn't like heights, but after machining breaking granite for 9 years these freak me out even more. It can take surprisingly little force to sheer an entire face off. These cliff faces were deep inside the mountain not very long ago too.

Alex did free solo this route, but it wasn't the same route as the one he filmed for Nat Geo. Both are absolutely nuts, though , and this film definitely helps put just how incredible it really is.

I admire people who play Russian roulette with their lives on a regular basis. It takes a special kind of person to see how close they can get to death for sport. I even see lots of people like that on the road in their cars every day. My dad said if I wanted the most secure job in the world I should be an undertaker (guess that means I would take people from above the ground to underground).
How you’re supposed to do it, or how many people end up doing it? You’re supposed to poop in a plastic baggie, which is then usually hauled in a drag bag with your gear. The idea is to not pollute the place with human waste. Lot of mountains in california require you to pack EVERYTHING out with you.
@@blakew5672 Did the Direct on here many years ago that joins the Regular at Big Sandy below the Zigzags. The final pitch to the junction goes up the chimney that emerges - 'conveniently' - at the back of the Big Sandy ledge system. It was like climbing an open sewer!
Breathtaking scenery... Nice bonus catching the wingsuit guy... they still do it in Yosemite even though it's illegal... what's the fine? You make that climb look pretty easy. How much extra weight with all your gear... I hate heights but I so want to challenge myself and do a climb before my days are over.
I love nature and the outdoors but my physician father diagnosed acrophobia in me at about age 5! We were on a hike and Daddy loved to go to the top of a mountain and look out and below at the vast view. I don't remember the hike well, because I've chosen to forget it! But Daddy reached the top of where we were going, and called me to come to him to see the view. I didn't want to go, he kept urging me, finally I crawled on my hands to him, he told me to stand up and I hung on to his pant leg and stood, bawling like the scared child that I was. He realized what my problem was. A few years later, I took flying lessons, I'd always wanted to fly and it did help my fear of heights -- you must look down all the time when you are flying VFR as I was, but I got used to it and really enjoyed flying thereafter, still love that sense of freedom when I'm alone flying an aircraft, it's the first time in my life that I really felt free, when I "slipped the surly bonds of Earth," and soared above it!. I don't really understand why I am afraid of falling off a mountain but yet I can fly an airplane and enjoy looking down, as I follow the beautiful blue ocean and coastline of the Pacific Ocean down to an airport some miles away, and then come back to my home airport, but I love it! I watched the video of Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan some time ago, and I was so nervous watching on him on TV, that I had to leave the TV and go outside for a bit during that couple of hours, because I caught myself holding my breath watching him! I was so afraid he'd fall and I didn't want to see it, yet I was drawn by his beautiful method of climbing! When it was over, I was a true fan of his and I didn't want him to climb anymore!
This scares the absolute shit outta me, but love being transported there by way of these vids, or fabulous climbing books...first learned of Yosemite from books by Greg Child. Good stuff n happy adventures 👍

Just looking at Yosemite; if even a noticeable percentage of the hundreds of bigwall ascents/attempts that take place there every year resulted in a fatality - bodies would be 'piling up at the base', YOSAR would be overwhelmed and the Park Service would have probably banned such activity years ago.
You remove them and take them with you - otherwise you'd run out of gear and grind to a halt a long way below the top. Also you'd run out of money pretty quick if you had to buy a load of new stuff every time you went climbing!
not tryna act like i can do this but it looked like like you guys just pulled yourself up by rope for most of it, i thought rock climbing was pulling up by the rock not just usingg your rope grab to climb up
Roped up climbing, when done correctly, isn't as dangerous as it looks. There's some risks but nobody is going out there to die so we're pretty careful.
Man, I could never do any of this. I get sweaty hands on a 3rd story balcony. When I saw you guys just lying back to sleep on a ledge, that was a nice tall glass of NOPE. 😂

Memories. circa: 1985. Did the route in 2 days. Some better climbers tried a 1 day ascent and we (partner and I) shared a ledge with them below the zig-zags. Benighted by rain. They fixed the zig-zags and we just jummared up. They trailed a our fixed rope. When you topped out, did the marmots come and beg for food?
I spent the night at the base in 1980 planning to do it the next day but there were so many parties on it, making lots of noise and dropping cans, etc we blew it off. I went up the cables early in the morning. There wasn't a soul there and the top was all mine. Not as challenging as the "Regular" but with a virtue of it's own. We were planning on doing it in 2 days and I wasn't a hot shot. I'm wondering why it took 4. I've heard there are few good bivvy spaces too.
Looks like they spent the night on the mediocre sloping bivvy ledge atop Pitch 6 or so, then went all the way to Big Sandy, P18 (hence why they got benighted getting there), spent 2 nights there (rest day, fixing the next few pitches?) then topped out the last 6 pitches on the last day. I was also confused why 4 days, cuz those are very literally the only 2 ledges on the whole wall wider than ~a foot. What I'm really curious about is how they hauled this monster tho, getting that up the chimneys in the middle of the route looks insanely difficult
When I backpack in some protected nature areas it is necessary to pack out your feces along with all other waste/trash. What is the procedure for a multi-day climb? Do you go into zip lock bag and pack it out as well? I can't imagine just letting it fly into the wind off the cliff. Sorry if gross, just curious.

I m afraid of heights, I could only watch it for 8 minutes. These lads have great control and obviously no fear of height.
When you think Honnold has done this free solo in under 2 hours it is mind boggling.
He did El Cap, a differnet wall.

I love nature and the outdoors but my physician father diagnosed acrophobia in me at about age 5! We were on a hike and Daddy loved to go to the top of a mountain and look out and below at the vast view. I don't remember the hike well, because I've chosen to forget it! But Daddy reached the top of where we were going, and called me to come to him to see the view. I didn't want to go, he kept urging me, finally I crawled on my hands to him, he told me to stand up and I hung on to his pant leg and stood, bawling like the scared child that I was. He realized what my problem was. A few years later, I took flying lessons, I'd always wanted to fly and it did help my fear of heights -- you must look down all the time when you are flying VFR as I was, but I got used to it and really enjoyed flying thereafter, still love that sense of freedom when I'm alone flying an aircraft, it's the first time in my life that I really felt free, when I "slipped the surly bonds of Earth," and soared above it!. I don't really understand why I am afraid of falling off a mountain but yet I can fly an airplane and enjoy looking down, as I follow the beautiful blue ocean and coastline of the Pacific Ocean down to an airport some miles away, and then come back to my home airport, but I love it!
I watched the video of Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan some time ago, and I was so nervous watching on him on TV, that I had to leave the TV and go outside for a bit during that couple of hours, because I caught myself holding my breath watching him! I was so afraid he'd fall and I didn't want to see it, yet I was drawn by his beautiful method of climbing! When it was over, I was a true fan of his and I didn't want him to climb anymore!

This scares the absolute shit outta me, but love being transported there by way of these vids, or fabulous climbing books...first learned of Yosemite from books by Greg Child.

Just looking at Yosemite; if even a noticeable percentage of the hundreds of bigwall ascents/attempts that take place there every year resulted in a fatality - bodies would be 'piling up at the base', YOSAR would be overwhelmed and the Park Service would have probably banned such activity years ago.

What happens to all the ropes and anchors you place when climbing up a mountain/rock face.
Are they just left there?
You remove them and take them with you - otherwise you'd run out of gear and grind to a halt a long way below the top. Also you'd run out of money pretty quick if you had to buy a load of new stuff every time you went climbing!

not tryna act like i can do this but it looked like like you guys just pulled yourself up by rope for most of it, i thought rock climbing was pulling up by the rock not just usingg your rope grab to climb up

Roped up climbing, when done correctly, isn't as dangerous as it looks. There's some risks but nobody is going out there to die so we're pretty careful.

Memories. circa: 1985. Did the route in 2 days. Some better climbers tried a 1 day ascent and we (partner and I) shared a ledge with them below the zig-zags. Benighted by rain. They fixed the zig-zags and we just jummared up. They trailed a our fixed rope. When you topped out, did the marmots come and beg for food?
I spent the night at the base in 1980 planning to do it the next day but there were so many parties on it, making lots of noise and dropping cans, etc we blew it off. I went up the cables early in the morning. There wasn't a soul there and the top was all mine. Not as challenging as the "Regular" but with a virtue of it's own. We were planning on doing it in 2 days and I wasn't a hot shot. I'm wondering why it took 4. I've heard there are few good bivvy spaces too.
Looks like they spent the night on the mediocre sloping bivvy ledge atop Pitch 6 or so, then went all the way to Big Sandy, P18 (hence why they got benighted getting there), spent 2 nights there (rest day, fixing the next few pitches?) then topped out the last 6 pitches on the last day.
I was also confused why 4 days, cuz those are very literally the only 2 ledges on the whole wall wider than ~a foot. What I'm really curious about is how they hauled this monster tho, getting that up the chimneys in the middle of the route looks insanely difficult

When I backpack in some protected nature areas it is necessary to pack out your feces along with all other waste/trash. What is the procedure for a multi-day climb? Do you go into zip lock bag and pack it out as well? I can't imagine just letting it fly into the wind off the cliff. Sorry if gross, just curious.
