The Scariest Hike We've Ever Done: Cloudripper via Cutthroat Chute
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- We were looking for a challenging hike in the Eastern Sierras, and boy did we find that and more with Cloudripper via Cutthroat Chute! The climb to Cloudripper summit is supposed to be a class 3 climb - IF you can find the correct chute. However, the beta is tricky and GPX is only so accurate, and we quickly found ourselves in a class 4/class 5 chute to the peak. Definitely not what we had planned for, definitely the scariest hike we've ever done, and DEFINITELY awesome!
We can safely say that, in our opinion, the Cloudripper to Vagabond Peak loop is one of the best hikes in the Sierras - the summit offers views from Big Pine Lakes to the Palisade Glacier, Chocolate Peak and the Chocolate Lakes, to Basin Mountain, White Mountain Peak, and beyond into the Sierra Nevada range. This is California hiking at its finest!

DISCLAIMER: The Cloudripper and Vagabond Peak loop is a dangerous hike that requires significant route-finding and climbing skills. We do not assume responsibility if you attempt this hike. As always, hike at your own risk. ✌️
Hey guys, we've had a couple of comments asking about our gear and preparation for this hike, so we want to be totally clear. We ALWAYS bring a rope anytime we do scrambling and off trail adventures, just in case. We were both wearing approach shoes for this hike, which was the absolutely perfect shoe for climbing granite like this. We religiously check weather forecasts leading up to and even during a hike when possible. The brief cloudburst we experienced was not forecast anywhere, but fortunately it passed quickly. We also always have extra layers and an emergency bivy in case we need to hunker down for any reason. Sometimes people wrongly assume that because we travel light and cultivate a fun tone in our videos, that we don't take our precautions seriously. But we absolutely do, and hope that you will too. ✌️
Also, for those of you that had specific questions about our gear, we recently compiled a list of our most requested gear here: www.livehardxlovehard.com/gear-list/
We hope to do a gear breakdown video soon as that's been very popularly requested, but until then, there's the basics!
Good words. Having led other hikers up an unpredictable mountain and/or into a bad weather situation, I can echo those sentiments from experience. Just a little bit of prep and packing beforehand can not only make your hike day/night more comfortable, it can sometimes save a life. Have fun but take calculated risks!
Thanks so much Patrick! That is very well said, and we will keep trying to remember to encourage that in future videos.
It has been a real joy watching your adventures. I was wondering if you guys ever did Mt Brewer, if not would you guys be interested in tackling it? It would be really fun to share and extend an experience to bag Mt Brewer to you guys. I have day hiked and overnight it several times. A fast pack one night would be perfect since the two additional peaks along the ridge should be a must climb (North Guard and South Guard). Hike can be done from west side or east side. West side being faster with less gain going in and out.
@@arinkim708 yes yes yes!!! Just looked it up- 8500 feet of climbing plus a dicey summit scramble? We are in!!! Thanks for a fantastic suggestion- it is now high on our list!!
never doubted this for a second! In my day, the emergency gear we carried was a tad bulkier. It's so nice to see how lightweight things have become - my UL gear now (just for hiking) is unbelievable compared to yesteryear!
You two are incredible! In my 40s I entertained doing Cloudripper, but NOT the face! I would have attempted it via the Class 1-2 route from 7th Lake on the other side! You guys have a lot of guts to attempt a route like the one you did!
That view of the Palisades.from the summit (L to R) Gayley, Sill, Polemonium, North Palisade, Thunderbolt, Winchell and Agassiz was awesome!
I surely believe your skills would be more than a match for The Black Kaweah now! Much of the difficulty of that climb is the approach. The Kaweah Peaks are higher than the Great Western Divide peaks, but the view perspective is not often experienced and those views are breathtaking!
Thanks, guys, for another thrilling climb! I sooo wish I hadn’t “put off till next time” climbs like this! I look back now and wonder; did I truly, deeply appreciate where I was? Or did I just say, “Oh, I’ll be back eventually”. Please, all who are drawn to the Sierras, DONT take for granted where you are and DONT be so confident you’ll be back!
Wow Michael we're both hoping that others are reading this comment as well, because you make such an important point of life philosophy here: when it comes to potential epic experiences, it is SO important to have a "go for it now" attitude rather than just assuming you'll be back one day, because so often other life events get in the way and that day never comes. We deeply appreciate that you share your wisdom with us, and we're thinking that at some point (maybe this winter when the hiking season slows down) we'd like to do a video dedicated to highlighting thoughtful comments like this that we and also others can learn from.
Had to book a trip this coming weekend to jump in that lake and do the hike towards Cloudripper. Hopefully not too crowded or will head up to Bristlecone. Thanks for the inspiration!
That is truly wonderful to hear! If you head up towards Cloudripper at dawn, or even better 20 minutes before dawn, it shouldn't be too crowded and you might even have a lot of the trail to yourself! ❤️
Thanks for the advice! Don’t like crowds but will have to deal with it somewhat this weekend. Weather looks great though
Thanks for letting us come along with your great journeys. You both work very hard and deserve to be able to these great things.
Thanks Daniel, that's very kind of you to say. We really do love sharing these journeys with you -- it's super motivating to know we're doing it for all of us, especially on really hard ones like this! ❤️
I have watched videos that I have had to stop because of the music. The best ones are with the right kind of music in the background.
Hope you're enjoying the music, Rhonda! We create all of the songs and music for the channel ourselves and are still learning, so we know it's not perfect yet but it's definitely improving week by week! ❤️
Epic!! You are both so inspiring. Thank you for making these videos. I love y'all's energy and strength!
Thanks very much. It's truly our pleasure to make these -- we absolutely love sharing these wild places with you, and it delights us that you find it inspiring! ❤️
Adam, you are so right, best view ever, thanks for taking us along!
We had heard the views would be good, but I mean, how can it get much better than those turquoise Big Pine Lakes below, the Palisade Glacier across, and all of the beautiful Sierras surrounding you!! So glad you enjoyed this one Bill. Really one of our favorite climbs ever.
You two are both crazy and inspiring.
Haha thanks very much, Werner -- that a description that we will happily sign on to! ❤️
Your music is sublime as always. There is a spiritual aspect to what you two are doing and the songs enhance it. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. But we do worry.
Wow thank you so much Shirlee, this comment really is so encouraging. We agree that hiking and climbing for us is a very spiritual experience, and it means so much that you think the songs compliment that as well. We appreciate your concern and promise that we put safety as a top priority. It is hard to describe in just a single 15 minute youtube video all the extra precautions we take, or show you guys exactly how we make each and every decision during technical climbs like this, but know that we do not take these ascents lightly. ♥️
Just stumbled across your channel. What an epic and amazing journey! Please be safe! Looking forward to more of your expeditions!
Wow, so happy you managed to stumble your way to us! We're stoked to have you along, and delighted you're enjoying the adventures so far. And we promise to be safe... just not TOO safe 😉
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Most welcome!
Haha Yes, safe to a degree but definitely life is meant to be lived to the fullest! 😊
I have hearing and balance handicaps from spinal meningitis that make it so I have limitations as to where I can hike safely. It would be nearly impossible for me to survive the hike you two were on. Words can't express how grateful I am to you two and others that take us along on these adventures.
Tom thank you so much for sharing that, and for your encouragement! Adam also has some hearing limitation from eardrum damage when he was a child, but luckily for him it has not affected his balance at all. It does affect his ability to hear voices, especially in crowded areas, which is probably part of why he's always been so drawn to the peace and quiet of the outdoors. We're guessing maybe nature holds a similar appeal for you. In any case, we're very proud to bring you on these adventures, and look forward to sharing some epic ones with you in 2022! ❤️
Great photography. Thanks for wearing helmets. We always wear them in technical canyoneering. Just got my permit for Big Pine Lakes (revisit). BTW, I heard of some neg comments on your vids. Ignore them, it's the price of success. Thanks for this vid and others. See you around the campus.
Glad you got the Big Pine permit! One of the greatest places in the world without doubt. Meanwhile glad you liked the Cloudripper vid -- it is still one of our all-time top 5 adventures, and probably always will be. It's just epic up there. ❤️
Thanks for sharing your experience. This was spectacular!
2:30 My experience is that smaller talus pieces interlock and are more stable. The oh-so-attractive bigger flatish pieces are often resting on top of the talus base and ready to tilt when any weight is applied. It seems counter-intuitive. YMMV.
Haha we have both found that out the hard way, Allan 🙈😂
Really impressive. Some of those ledges scared the heck out of me !!!
Thank you - yes some of those ledges scared us a bit too! Not so much going up, but the fear of if we got stuck and had to climb back down that way!😱
I think that Elise must have a stylist that follows you guys because her hair is always looking fab even halfway through a hike hah - great video!
Haha now wouldn’t that be nice? Do you do hair - do you want to come along? 😂 but seriously, thank you, that’s really sweet. I definitely don’t often feel very “fab” out there, but then again, I personally prefer hiker grungy any day! So glad you enjoyed the adventure! ❤️
Did Cloudripper last October from Baker Lake at Coyote flat. It was a crazy cross country routfinding bonanza with two good hiking buddies. Your climb was nuts. Killer view up there huh? Love your content as always. Keep em coming love the positive energy always!
That is AWESOME! How was the Coyote Flat route? It looks like that road to the trailhead can be rough 😬 But must have been fun nonetheless, because how could it not be with cross country route finding and summit views like this? Thanks so much for your support and encouragement, we just get a kick out of sharing these wild adventures with ya!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Yes, the road in is very rough, 4WD is a must. There's a good trail up past Baker lake to a small pond then its up a ridge with no trail just following GPS, We traversed a ridge to the south of Thunder and Lightning lake and eventually came out in that plateau between Vagabond and Cloudripper. The Talus in that whole area is very unstable. On the way back we descended to T&L lake for water and got into some really dicey Talus that we noticed from the lake was directly above 300'-400' cliff bands.
Nice job - so inspiring !!! Love the way you two encourage each other and all of us. 💪🏼🙏🏼💪🏼
From Colin Powell on the day of his death:
12. DON’T TAKE COUNSEL OF YOUR FEARS OR NAYSAYERS.
Fear can be a powerful motivator, but it can also paralyze a leader at the worst possible time. Learn to understand your fears and channel them in ways that you control rather than allowing them to control you. Think clearly, think rationally, and make decisions that aren’t rooted in emotion.
Thanks Lauren -- that makes us super happy and motivated to hear! ❤️❤️
You two are amazing both very lucky . Peace
Thank you so much! We do feel very lucky, and blessed to be able to do the things we love together. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard very lucky to have each other ....it's amazing watching you both love each other ...
Makes Arkansas look slightly ugly! Wow, that looks like a ton of fun. Thanks for sharing! Wish I could do hikes like that...wow.
Haha you can, Kenneth! Just come out for a visit! Although you'd better make it a long visit, because once you start getting into the Sierra mountains it is REALLY hard to stop. There might be no more addictive terrain anywhere!
Awesome. Congratulations
Thank you so much Bruce! We definitely have been riding the high of this summit for quite some time - that climb was TOUGH! But those summit feels are what keep us coming back for more 😊
Scary? Reminds me of middle palisade. Good job!
Thanks very much! Middle Palisade is def on our agenda for this summer. We've been working a lot on our climbing skills this winter, so hopefully will be able to handle it ok!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Middle Palisade is only third class from the east side but when you get close to the summit it’s easy to get off route into some 5th class climbing so be careful. I was toast after that climb and stumbled all the way back to camp. Finger lake is a nice place to base camp!
Great video guys! Such an extraordinary adventure. You are so daring brave!! That did not look easy, and finally was not easy at all 😁
Terrifying climb, but so gratifying. You are very deserving proud to have reached summit. Well done!
Aw thank you so much Diego. We really appreciate you recognizing how hard this one was. Even now, a couple weeks later, we're still feeling pretty proud of ourselves 😂 But, at the same time, asking ourselves what we can do next to push the boundaries just a bit further.
Your adventures are amazing! I love the quality of your videos. I just noticed some thumbs down and I just want to think those were accidental. Your videos deserve a thousand thumbs up! Keep them coming!
Aw Rodney, that is so sweet and your message put a huge smile on both of our faces. Thank you so much! We know we won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but we are so grateful to have people that enjoy what we do that are also as kind and supportive as you!
That was an epic climb. Way beyond anything I would try. Love watching your adventures though. Be safe out there.
Thanks so much Stephen! And we promise that we will be safe -- we love to push ourselves, but also plan to be doing this for a long, long time, and don't ever want to mess that up through injury or worse!
Ahhhmazing!!! Every view… every damn view… that’s life right there! I loved seeing the struggles. I love the music too! But also love hearing you guys just climb so I’d love to have you include more of both! Thanks!! ❤️❤️🔥
Wow thanks so much Julie! That's really helpful feedback -- we're always wondering if we should talk more or talk less, but it sounds like we're getting the mix just about right so far. Very happy you're liking the music -- of course we're still learning, but gosh it's so satisfying to make a song and then set it against some epic video footage. It feels almost like being real filmmakers!
Crazy way to go in :I glad you accomplished it but would be just a tad nervous at 11:15-11:16 in the video with the lightning bolt. Good job
Thanks Dave! And yeah we didn’t see that lightning bolt until looking at the footage later. It’s crazy because we kept postponing this climb until the weather forecast predicted perfectly clear skies, but it is the Sierras after all, and apparently they refuse to be predictable. We got off that peak in a jiffy tho, and we’re glad it cleared up pretty quick!
Pretty cool route 👍
Thanks Emanuel -- we really loved this one!
That was incredible
Thank you! It's amazing how many crazy cool adventures there are in the eastern Sierra, and hopefully we'll be able to do all of them before we're done!
Awesome video that is our back yard
Glad you liked it! Do you live in Bishop, by any chance? That's basically our second home at this point, and we're seriously considering moving there once Adam commences his early retirement in a year and a half! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard were in Big Pine we love the small town vibe
@@kotasam Us too -- you're doing it right!
Very cool hike and climb -- first time watching one of your videos. BTW, is the music all your original stuff? Very cool.
Thanks Eric! Yes, it is all our own music -- so glad you like it! Stay tuned, because we've got some pretty cool stuff coming up!
What an amazing climb. Thanks for taking us along with you. I am now convinced that you two are reincarnated mountain goats.
So maybe Adam went from mountain goat -> puppy -> human with dog and goat-like characteristics 🤣🤷🏻♀️
Awesome.
Thanks -- very glad you liked this one, because it's one of our all-time most treasured memories. Just loved everything about this hike and summit! ❤️
That was absolutely gnarly... you two are so badass
Haha, thank you very much Brian! And you are absolutely right - gnarly is the word to describe that chute, both literally in the sense that the rocks are weirdly gnarled like some kind of crazy Dr. Seuss drawing come to life, and metaphorically in the sense that it was just straight up hard and dangerous 😂
What did you guys do to work on your class 3 and 4 climbing. I'm trying to ease my way into these type of climbs because I find them the most fulfilling. Do you drill on actual class 3 and 4 areas or what do you suggest. I do everything solo and I'm finding it challenging making to transition from class 2 to 3 and 4
That's a great question Brian, and in fact we're planning to do a full video on that exact topic soon -- so hopefully that will be useful! In the meantime, the short answer is that we scramble and boulder at every opportunity. On many SoCal hikes there are off-trail opportunities to climb rock formations (check out our two Joshua Tree videos for prime examples of this), and we just go off trail and climb stuff whenever possible. Sometimes we get a little scratched up (especially Adam), but it really helps us develop our skills. Of course it's harder to push limits if you're alone, because you can't risk a really bad fall without help available, but you can still work on class 3 stuff (just keep the vertical exposure on anything dicey to under 10 feet). And if you don't have any rock formations near you, a climbing gym would probably also get the job done!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thanks for responding. I love your channel. I love wild adventures in the mountains and your channel has the best in my opinion. Your guys relentless energy and positivity is quite inspiring. You two are so lucky to have a partner that mirrors your intensity and drive to conquer the mountains. Keep it going
Woot woot! Great climb, thank you for sharing :)
Thanks so much Heather! Cloudripper was exhilarating in every kind of way. Glad we could take you along and show you those insane summit views!
Do you notice up in the pine clad highlands there isn't much sound at all, you can hear the currawong calling from 15 km away, you can hear an owl taking off..
I've noticed this many times in tassie, and I'm curious if it's something to do with atmospheric pressure, or the lack of insects, or some other reason.
You'd like meander falls, mount ironstone, mother cummings peak, and the Acropolis,
That's a really good question -- we did notice that, and also don't know why! Part of it is a lack of birds, but not sure why there aren't more birds up there.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard plenty of nectar at least in tassie for the honey possums
Nice video😊 Your camera looks great. What product do you guys use?
Thanks very much -- we loved this hike! We currently use a combination of GoPro 10 and iPhone 12 -- they work great together because GoPro is better for moving shots and iPhone for still. ❤️
Great song. I was hoping the track was gonna break out into some heavy guitar.
You guys are a very happy and talented couple.
Thank you so much, Andrew! We really want to get some guitar on a couple of these songs!! ❤️
LOVE the song, it should be the theme song for the next Bond movie!
Wow, that is the best compliment we could have hoped for! Adele's Skyfall has been the inspiration for the type of songs we want to set the tone for these climbs. Thanks SO much Bill!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard Who is the song's artist? Or what name ?
Hey Ivan. We compose and record all our own songs for our videos. Elise writes and sings and Adam often does the lyrics :)
you are crazy so I subscribed.. you earned it
Awesome! Got some monster adventures coming up this fall that we think you'll enjoy!
I would like very much to see how you gays climb back, the descent is always much more difficult for me.
Yes descending is always harder. On this one, our loop took us down the easier Vagabond Peak route, which was still challenging but much easier than climbing down the face would have been. We have some big climbs coming up in 2022, and will make sure we show the difficult descents on those as well!
Yea I’m good ! Stay safe
You stay safe too!
A+ use of the word vertiginous. Subscribed
Haha, yes! That might be Adam's favorite word, both because it's cool and latinate, and because it precisely describes his preferred type of experience 😂 Delighted to have you along for the journey!
Iam really happy for you guys make it to the top thsnk you for share i almost pee on my pants, my legs are shaking here on the sofa but those views are the best good blees you guys, one question the singer is you rigth?
Thank you so much! And yes, we make all our songs and the singer is me. God bless! ❤
Really nice voice congrats
@@HikingTrails365 Thank you!
This is sick! You guys should start training for climbing and get some trad gear so you can not only put in some protection on the steeper 4th / 5th class stuff, but also expand into the Alpine climbing realm. There are some amazing and attainable climbs in the Sierras!
Mitchell you are absolutely reading our minds! We've been thinking all summer that we need to do exactly that kind of training so we can expand our range and do some more technical traverses we've got our eyes on. Hopefully by this time next year you'll see us out there with some trad gear in the pack!
Yikes , but awesomely wonderful
Thanks Andrea! We really had a great time on this one.
4minutes and 50 seconds… the view🤩😱
Thanks Stephanie, we were hoping people would like that shot too. It definitely felt epic when we were there, so we're glad it must have turned out okay!
BIGG ❤️ LOVE
Thanks John, you're the best!
hi what camera do you use?
Hi, we actually use two -- a GoPro 8 and an iPhone 12, depending on what shot we're trying to get. They're both ultra light and easy to use even on crazy adventures like this one! ❤️
What camera are you guys using? Video quality is amazing!
Thanks so much Jesus! For this one we used two GoPro 8s and the iPhone 12. The iphone is less versatile for shooting with movement or while you're doing really hard climbing, but it is much better than the GoPro for low light conditions.
What was the temperature at that time?
Very warm until the rain clouds came in... forecast was for low 80s at the base near the lakes during the day and it was probably in the low 60s on the summit. Definitely got colder once those clouds covered the sun though!
That was a most excellent ascent - welcome to the Sicko Club. Bet you were longing for the "good ole days" of brush belays on the Galena Traverse. Great work and keep it up!
Haha! Oh yes, we will gladly run for secretary and treasurer of the Sicko Club, assuming you are President! 😂 These adventures may sometimes be terrifying, but we're sure you know why we keep coming back for more. Thanks so much for your support and encouragement!
no sunburn??????
We were well sun-screened for this one, Dennis! Our worst burn ever was that winter snowshoe last year out to the hot springs. We didn't expect it to be so warm, and ended up in shirtsleeves having forgotten to sunscreen our arms. They were toast. But when we know it'll be hot we're good about using the SPF 50! ❤️
You guys should use a few alpine belaying techniques next time to make yourselves feel safer
We did bring a rope on this one, but never quite felt the need for it- but it was close a couple times!!
The beginning of this video was like the start of a comedy!
"I'm so terrified right now.."
🎶WUHHHH OH WUHHHHHH OH WUHOH UH OH OH🎶
Haha yes -- and fortunately this one had a happy comic ending as well!
It brought tears to an old mans eyes when you both hit the peak! THANK YOU so much for sharing it with us!

Wow! Thank you so much Amada. This comment made us both feel incredibly happy, and we are so delighted you found us! As for capturing the views on camera, don’t worry- you will see in our very first vids that we didn’t always capture the scenes like this. It just takes some practice and we are still learning too, so we know you can do it as well! Meanwhile, you’ve totally got us feeling inspired to keep making cool videos, thank you!
Wow that was some crazy scrambling! Elise looked genuinely scared; rightfully so too! Well done!
Haha thank you Steven! And yes, I was pretty scared, but mostly because I usually take my cues from Adam, and when HE admitted he was getting nervous then I knew this could get dicey. But, thankfully, we've been working really hard on our climbing skills and it really paid off. The scariest part was just the level of uncertainty once we realized we were not in the chute of our beta. Buuuut, so worth it for those summit views!
I just finished watching your climb for the second time. You two are amazing! I now consider Adam the new Spiderman and Elise, the new Braveheart. I'm very impressed with how loving, supportive and positive your are with each other. You two are truly simpatico. I'm really looking forward to your next adventure.
Hahaha yes!!! Adam's secret dream is to be a superhero, so you know he's totally delighted with this comment. We're both really grateful that you noticed how important our mutual support and positivity is toward our success -- we totally agree with you, and are glad you pointed it out. The views and your enthusiasm are what i watch for. Love it.
Aw thanks William. Yes, you are right, we were pushing the limits with this one. Honestly, though, that was just about our love of climbing and exploring and challenging ourselves on hard terrain. This is not a well known hike, so it wasn't at all about getting video views. We assume YT probably won't even show this to people outside of our subscribers. However, given that we were going to do this hike no matter what, we definitely wanted to take you guys along... because it was EPIC! But we really are careful and definitely try to minimize death risk while still getting where we want to go. ♥️
Great as usual you lot. Nice to see you wearing helmets. Always a good option for this kind of climbing/scrambling. Want to continue seeing the content! All the best, from Scotland/Sweden :)
Yes! My helmet just saved me from a serious injury (or worse) descending a steep class 3 gully on a 14er peak the other day. I gave it a big hug after that. 😊 Thanks again for all your support and hope you're climbing some amazing mountains over there!!
This 77 year old man love you guys! But you're freakin' NUTS! I thought I did crazy shyte in the Italian Alps, but you guys!

Just booked my flight to the dolomites because of the last video.. Guess ill add Yosemite again to this week lol thanks for the great suggestions! keep it up :)
That is awesome!!! So stoked to hear about your Dolomites adventures -- and ya, you can never have too much Yosemite! ❤️
Wow! Loved the video! I hiked Cloudripper twice, 1980 and 1987. The "normal way". I remember the tiring climb back up Vagabond and the long boulder field back to Green Lake really beat me up. Unlikely to do this again so I enjoy seeing you two do it....certainly the hard way! All the best! PS loved the song
Hal that is awesome!! You're the first one who has commented so far that has actually done this bad boy. And yeah, that hike back up to Vagabond was way rougher than we had expected - not so much the technical difficulty as just the exhaustion and cardio strain that we were feeling at that point, and we got pretty beat up by the scree descent to Green Lake as well. So stoked that you loved the song. We're really feeling encouraged about our musical creativity, and will keep trying to create new songs to go with the videos!
I climbed up Cloudripper in 2004! via Green Lake. We decided to downclimb a different way and it was a mistake.
Stay safe ..... what's your footing. Watch out for those snack spot vertigo
Haha yes Elise actually refuses to go out on some of Adam's snack spots! But for him, having worked for many years as a roofer when he was in college and grad school, the heights usually don't feel too scary.
I am literally experiencing this adventure with you guys. I will never experience them first-hand in this life, but you are the next best thing. Keep living your best life!❤
Thanks so much, Tyheshia! Really delighted that you saw this one -- it is still among our all-time top 5 favorite adventures. And we are definitely following your advice to keep living our best life. Just got to Colorado and are going to do some adventures in the amazing fall colors that we can't wait to show you!! ❤️
There is reason why they had the mountaineering school in Palisades. Big Pine.
You can jump over the ridge from the lake (green), go up to the other lakes below University, if you go right there is a notch up on the ridge you can see through to pinnacles, up and right overlooks big Pothole. Tyndall via Shepherd Pass is hot long, but once up there you got Polyhrome/Tyndall/Williamson if you want em. Polychrome is next to the little lake at pass, go up it. Easy great view. Bam. You can also swim at Rainbow Falls, when water is low in summer. Reverse back out and up to Ritter. All these are "easy", I like White Mountain. run around Bristlecones and camp up high, hell the parking lot at white is 12800. 23 miles out from Bristlecone Center 11800. 50 miles form Big Pine turn off. Gould out the ridge is best view of that area. overlooks golden pond, all five lakes, and lakes on other side and once you hike out ridge Rae lakes. GOOGLE EARTH! ALWAYS. ALWAYS RECON WITH GOOGLE EARTH!
This is FANTASTIC advice, and we're going to take all of it! Very cool that you've done all these adventures -- hope you won't mind if, once spring rolls around and we plan a big Sierra trip, we hit you up for some beta.
The backdrop of middle Palisades is mind blowing.
Blanc is my other favorite.
Will try for Middle Pal this summer! ❤️
Used to be, I led a Sierra Club trip to the top of Cloudripper, me also bagging Vagabond, and the day before, I led a few others to the top of Mt. Emerson. Posted at my website, I was a peak bagger. I enjoy seeing the sights and views by your videos, and in my time, I shot Kodachrome film with my Nikon SLR.
That's so badass you did such challenging climbs one day after another -- much respect for those back to back climbs!
Palisades are the real deal SIerra. You know as soon as you get there it is the wildest area in the Sierras. Ritter is good one to do before this bunch. Russell after this one. If you want the increase in intensity. It ain't Whitney trail or White Mountain or Langley. It is the Palisades.
Totally -- so excited for Palisades!! ❤️
Back by popular demand.
Haha yes!!! This climb is so freaking cool -- we might go back and do it again in the fall just for those lake views at the top. ❤️
Do you recommend any hiking clubs ? My hiking buddy is basically out of commission now and I find myself a line adventure seeker.
Yes! We have met some amazing people on SoCal hikers, and also Hiking our California. So many people on both sites with great attitudes, and lots of helpful beta on interesting climbs. ❤️
Epic climb... I was getting vertigo just watching the screen! Amazing! Great music as well!
Thanks Paul! We know you know and appreciate music, so that really means a lot to us. ❤️
Amazing…thank you both for the adventure 🎉
Our pleasure, Paul! Super glad you saw this one -- still to this day it's among our all time favorites just because of the combination of difficulty and astonishing views. ❤
Plenty of these scree slopes in the central highlands of tassie. Dollorite is wonderful stuff
The nice thing about the scree on this one (though it didn't help Adam when he fell!) is that it's fairly large pieces of rock so usually a bit more stable.
If you like that go up Mount Gould at Kearsarge Pass, then traverse over to Dragon Peak. It is just walking but the view of the Pinnacles and University and the lakes on three sides is awesome. Mount Dana in the Snow at Yosemite. I got stuck in snow, 10 inches in 30 minutes, July lol.
Yes Dan! Oh my gosh, we were trying to do the Dragon Peak traverse this fall but it was during those crazy Sequoia fires and we had to abandon before even starting because the smoke was so thick we could barely see or breathe! But Dragon is way high up on our list -- great recommendation! Will look into Mount Dana too -- thank you! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I would go up Gould then walk out towards Dragon, for views, and go back down Gould. Go down back to Lake with the boulder jump. Go up over ridge to top lakes camp there. University.
Would it make sense to have a 20 meter rope and alpine harnesses for the toughest most exposed sections?
Yes, that kind of setup plus a couple pieces of gear would almost always make sense for these kinds of adventures, just in case you get into a really gnarly spot and have to down climb. On this particular climb, we were able to do it up the wrong gully and still not need a rope, and we know from the beta you wouldn't need a rope in the right gully, so it's probably not necessary here. But really, why not have it along just in case? A light static rope and ultra-light harnesses at least for top-belay and rappel purposes could be useful in lots of situations. ❤️
Brilliant ascent route. Just a thought: you don’t take a rope? 😮
That's a good question, Francis, and yes we always do take a rope! If we'd had to down climb the face on this one I would have belayed Elise on the tough parts, and then down climbed it myself free solo. We rarely need to use the rope, but always have it on class 4 and above adventures just in case. --A
Does setting up the cameras for the shots take up extra time and slow things down?
That's a good question. Yes, it sometimes does slow things down quite a bit to get the shots. Not so much to set up the cameras themselves, because we use ultra-light ones that we can basically just pull out, point and shoot, but planning what shots we want to get and what angles to get them from can be difficult. This is especially true shooting into the sun, for example, because sun spots can be a real issue with the GoPros. It definitely increases the difficulty factor quite a bit over just plain hiking!
There is no way I would have gone up that couloir, one kicked lose rock and the person below would toast, helmet or no helmet. But then I'm at home watching this on a computer monitor and I can't see the local conditions. You folks do seem to pack light though. I get it, the more stuff you have to haul up, the slower you'll go, the more likely you'll need it. Did you folks have a wind/rain coat? Seems like that moment when you were getting pelted was the time to pull it out. Anyway class 4 stuff seemed to me to be more dangerous than class 5 because you think you don't need a rope or a belay and yet you might.
Anyway glad you made it/up and back down safely. The views were terrific.
Thanks Gary. Yes, we absolutely did both have rain anoraks, and were about to pull them out when the weird cloudburst just suddenly stopped. It was the strangest thing. We couldn't even see the cloud that the rain was coming from 😂 And though we didn't feel the need for it on this one, we did have a 100FT rope as well, which we would have pulled out had things gotten any dicier. Thanks so much for your care, and glad you like those crazy views. ♥️
That was Amazing....you need to bottle her attitude it's worth millions.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard can't even get my wife on an electric bike...
Beautiful , thanks for sharing , glad I found you channel
So glad you found us! It's delightful to share these adventures with others who love hiking and climbing -- especially in the Sierra. No matter how many Alps we climb, and we do love the Alps as well, the Sierra will always be our first and strongest love! ❤️
You guys should do a collab with another favorite hiking / climbing channel I love, Mediocre Amateur. When the climb gets "gnarly", they prefer to refer to it as "spicy". 8^)
Wow Eric you pretty much hit on our life dream after watching one video! We absolutely love those guys, watch all their videos, and would of course collab with them if they ever wanted to. Kinda afraid they'd feel like we're not hardcore enough to want to collab with us, though.
@@LiveHardxLoveHard And remember one of their key messages (I think from their Rim to Rim hike where Danny puked) ... "leave any man who inconveniences you behind." LOL
Aw man thanks for bringing us a long. I would love to do this but u are probably right, i’ll never do this one. You guys are animals! Looks scary af. Cheers!
Haha thank you! And if you want to summit Cloudripper but without the sketchy ascent up the face, you can always go up the way we went down via Vagabond peak -- that's a beautiful and challenging route in and of itself, and the dangers are more of the bruising your butt or turning an ankle type than potential for major falls. ❤️
Very good melody, hopefully, I can do this mountain someday .
Thank you so much! We're delighted you like the music, and we also hope you will be able to do this mountain. It was our favorite summit we've ever been to, because the views were just so spectacular from the top. ❤️
Wow, the views are breathtaking! You are so cool! Well done! Congratulations!
Thank you! It was truly so gorgeous up there -- really glad that it came through on the camera. We're always worried when we're in a place that beautiful that we'll mess it up somehow!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard You filmed it so perfect, as always, I admire you both..
Just started watching you guys and wow!!! You guys are awesome!!!
Thanks so much, Bruce! We're delighted to have you along for the adventure, and stay tuned -- lots more great stuff coming up this fall! ❤️
OMG. The only way I could get thru this was knowing you both survived it fine. A little scraped and bruized, but fine.
I hope you got your adrenaline fix for the rest of the hiking season. Please take safer routes next time.
Your new song was the bomb. Where can we buy it from?
Haha, thank you very much, and yes, what we have coming up next are some routes that require a lot of suffering but not quite as much vertiginous danger. Delighted that you like the song! We haven't put anything up on SoundCloud yet, but that's definitely a project that we want to get done before the end of the year. Will definitely let you know once we get a few of our favorite songs up :)
Great stuff. Just subscribed.😎👍
Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.
John Muir
Wow, thank you so much! And yes, love that Muir quote, although he probably should have also mentioned some of the paths should have rocks. Lots of big ones to climb. 😂 Stoked to have you along for the journey, and hope you'll enjoy some of the adventures we've got coming up next!
The Inconsolable Range absolutely sucks. So much broken crap rock. Ugh.
Oh my gosh we were just up there yesterday at Chocolate Peak, looking up at Cloudripper and remembering climbing up that stuff. Brutal! One heck of an amazing summit, though! ❤️
I was up there last year and did the loop around Chocolate Peak for fun. Walked by it this year on North to South Lake loop. @@LiveHardxLoveHard
Mad respect. You two are incredible. And you keep it PG lololol. My version of this will be demonetized instantly due to profanity.
Hahaha we do try to keep it PG, but if only you saw some of the expletives that wind up getting cut -- especially when Adam gets into a really precarious position! Very happy you liked this one -- truly one of our all-time favorite adventures.
Same here Beartooth pass was amazing though, Adam quite your senior that's cool too see him steady working and climbing enjoying life ❤️stay blessed you two
Hey the song was nice actually. Was that you singing?
Thank you! Yes that's me -- we make all of our own music for the channel. So glad you like it!! ❤️
That was some genuine drama. It's an absolute nightmare when you're climbing something and feel like you've gotten in over your head. Because the only thing scarier than climbing up something you're afraid of is the thought that you may have to climb back down it....Also, I don't know who named that mountain, but Cloudripper? Awesome name.
Haha, the second we heard the name of this peak we knew we had to summit it! And yes. That moment We looked at the GPX and realized we had taken a different chute was the most terrifying moment of the climb. Thankfully we never had to ascend anything that was beyond our skill level so it was more the mental challenge of uncertainty that was getting to us. But all worth it for those summit views! 🥰🥰
WHAT music is this! The "don't fall" song?
Excellent climb. I'm really impressed with this climb. INcredible. I want to do this. Great work and thanks for the vid.
Awesome, Clayton! So glad you saw this -- it's one of our favorite climbs we've ever done, both because of how challenging it is and also the un-freaking-believable views from the summit. Really hope you do it -- you will definitely never forget it. Also glad you like the song. We make all our own music, and wrote that song specifically to go with this kind of climb! ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard is there a Spotify link or anything? And I’m stocked you replied to me lol. I’m a fan for a while now and it’s so cool to connect w/ people on here
@@claytonzeimet155 Right now the only way to get the full songs is as music videos on our Patreon -- which is pretty cool because it's footage of a lot of stuff we haven't posted anywhere else, and we also put our blooper reels and stuff on there. Eventually we'll also probably put them on Spotify or Bandcamp or something. So psyched you're liking the music!
I have to say you two have the most fantastic physiques 😁
Thanks so much, Liz, that is very kind of you! ❤️
Where can we download that "Don't Fall" song?
So glad you like it! We haven't put that one up on Band Camp yet, but will def let you know when we do! ❤️
Have you tried motherload hike in Arizona?
OMG Gen we didn't even know about it until you mentioned it. Just now researched it and it looks fantastic! We will definitely do this one, maybe even the next time we go to Arizona. That's seriously a great recommendation -- thank you! ❤️
bravo
Thanks Jurgen -- truly one of our all-time favorite climbs! ❤️
