- Middle Palisade is a 14,018 foot peak in the central Sierra Nevada mountain range in the U.S. state of California. It is a fourteener, and lies on the Sierra Crest as part of the Palisades group, a group of prominent Sierra Nevada mountain summits that includes multiple other fourteeners, approximately 12 miles southwest of the town of Big Pine. Middle Palisade is the twelfth highest peak in California.
This was a backpacking effort in which I hiked up to Finger Lake on June 17th, 2024 to spend the night, then ascended a peak and returned to the car the following day.

This comment means a lot because although filming this trek went impeccably, there are some outings that go very awry and I have to pivot, which can be very daunting. Fortunately, I'm getting better at navigating this stuff with every effort, but there is absolutely a bit of a learning curve. Thanks a lot.

Thank you. I used a GoPro hero 11 and a Samsung s23 ultra. Yes, I used a chest mount as well as a head mount for this video.
So there is no bergschrund to jump right now? The snow goes all the way to the rock? Let me know as I have a friend I’d like to take up and not have to jump as I did years ago.
No jump! I did eye the bergschrund on the northern glacier, but not where I went up.
The Palisades were my nemesis. Split was a cakewalk, Norman Clyde, not very fun. Sill, it took 4 times for me to find the summit via the easiest route, Middle had rockfall during the entire climb up and down, and my buddy kicked a rock down on me that put me in a walking cast. North Pal was a clean ascent, but I had to rescue two guys that came up the glacier via the U-notch and thought it would be easier to follow me down to Barrett lakes. They were wrong. Good times.
ha! Sounds like you got some pretty good experience out here. Hoping for North Pal before the year ends. We'll see if I have the skills for it.
@@trvrsoutdoors if you decide to climb North Pal from the southwest. Give yourself some time to camp at the upper Barrett Lake. And bring a fishing pole, with a pearl mepps lure. Some of the largest Brook trout I have ever seen are in that lake, and that lure worked great every time I visited. Oh yeah, watch out for strange rockfall, the middle section of the climb is pretty smooth, rocks on both sides are all loose. I stayed in the middle on the smooth section because everything else looked like ball bearings. A year after my climb, my buddies tried to follow my old route, and one of them ended up needing a helicopter rescue. Luckily, the other was able to go get help, all the way back in Bishop. Tech makes a rescue a little easier nowadays, but no one wants that. Good Luck!
@@michaeloreilly1073 Solid advice here. I've stayed at Barret Lakes twice now. One of my favorite sections along the Sierra High Route. I never thought of climbing Norpal from there, but might reconsider with this knowledge. Thank you.

I took a class 3/4 route. It was still fairly straightforward. The class 3 route (red rock chute) is considered dangerous due to its considerable amount of loose rock. Be careful if going solo and roll one at a time if going in a group.

Thank you! So I rotate three pairs of tech pants from Costco. Theyre all great! $20 . I also own a pair of Prana pants, but to be honest, the Costco ones are as good for the price. They pretty much have at least one pair throughout the year.

Nice job. Can you comment more on the choice of the regular Northeast Face route versus the red rocks? My understanding is that you had a short class 4 chimney on the ascent, versus class 3 with loose rocks on the descent.
Also, did you ever use that ice axe, or crampons? It didn't look like it.
Your understanding would be correct. The Red Rock chute is class 3 but more risky is involved, especially in a group since you can dislodge rocks and send them flying down.
The 4th class route I took is stable, and so more safe if you have the skill. I decided to go down the Red Rock chute just to save time since I'm not as strong at downclimbing 4th class.
I used my ice axe once about midway between the glacier and camp because it was easier on my legs to glissade than to traverse the talus fields.

Sounded like a jet, not rockfall. With the multiple military bases in the area there are jets constantly flying over. Some even breaking the sound barrier. They also fly pretty low sometimes (like sub 200ft!) it’s pretty cool if you see one of those going overhead.
I thought it was a jet at first as well. But then it continued much longer which made me look over at the massive scree field sliding down the mountain. I had a clip of it but decided to leave it out because it was so poorly shot.

I was up there about 17 years ago (Not middle palisade but finger lake which is gorgeous lake)
Oh man, I'd have loved to see the glaciers at that time. Such a nice and unique place to camp.
