As an African myself if I were to put my kid under the care of a babysitter I'll say to my wife, "Honey I'm off to work. I have fitted hidden surveillance cameras all over the house to keep an eye on that babysitter". If I find the babysitter attempting to put a joint on my little baby's mouth or trying to suffocate my baby girl, it would spell a death sentence for the babysitter. I shadowed a paediatrician who was an expert in child abuse forensic cases and I asked her what’s the biggest theme she has seen in her career. Her answer has stuck with me and has been proven to be true time and time again. The justice system does not care enough about the welfare of children and seem to value their lives less than that of adults. E.g. while an adult hitting another adult would usually lead to assault charges even in a single occurrence, parents who beat their children rarely face jail time or assault charges but instead have their children apprehended with the prospect of getting them back with further counselling and training. Moreover, child neglect cases leading to death such as in this case, are often under investigated in comparison, less publicized, and the charges tend to not be as long as that of a murder charge for killing an adult. It’s as off the justice system gives smaller punishments for harming those who are physically small, as if their life matters any less….
