I've been playing bass for 2 years and THIS video was my starting place, I thank you so much Luke. I remember the day that I watched this video and played Seven Nation Army to my friends on discord...
I was actually booed in a party for playing bass as the "guitar wasn't loud enough" lol. A girl approached me once thinking that I was the guitar player for the cover song of war pigs (Black Sabbath). Once she learnt that I was a bass player, she pretty much said that I was just moving around my fingers fast for nothing. To be fair, she was pretty drunk. Even after all this, I remain a proud bassist. I learnt the bass first then the guitar. And I always chose to play the bass.
I get that quite a lot. I've started doing some small gigs here and there and after playing funk in polyrhythms and jazz, ppl ask if I can "play anything cool". To which I start playing something from rhcp or 7 nation army when I can't be bothered...
Hi Luke! I just picked up my first bass 4 days ago amd thanks to your videos i now can play 3 out of these five songs now thank you so much for these videos! Ive beem practicing for 4 hours each day and i saw immediate results! Thank you so much, you ROCK Luke!!
Great stuff! Just getting started on bass, after playing guitar for years. This is hugely helpful and helps me see both the similarities and differences between the instruments. Thanks for the video.
I've just recently started to learn bass guitar, and the only instrument I've ever played was a recorder in 5th grade, but I was able to understand this, I'm so happy I found this video!
My first riff on bass was the intro on peace sells, as a guitarist it was what made me also pick up bass (that and the lack of any decent bass players in my area)
I'm more or less just starting my musical adventure. About 1 month in, couple dozen hours with bass. Seems easier to me. Still learning the notes to the frets, but this numbering method is teaching me faster as a means to achieve results. Still getting my fingers and hands used to it, also. The guys I'm learning and practicing with are pretty impressed with my results so far. Timing with hand movement and placement is challenging. I'm definitely making positive progress and have a great bunch of people around to help.

I'm embarrassed to say this but I own a Peavey TL5 in pristine condition ( because I haven't learned to play it) and a Gibson EBO that I was given by my great uncle. I've had them Both for about 30 years. I would learn a bit then get busy with work and put them down for a couple of years and forget what little I had learned. I don't remember anything now at all. What is a good way to start from scratch and remember it? I've lost my books and I don't know the very basic notes. Could you help me get started again Please? P.S. life lesson I'll trade you. don't work to much or your wife will leave you after 28 years. "Balance is the Key to a happy life".
Hey Luke, I noticed it looks like you’re playing an Ibanez, maybe a SR though I can’t tell. I’m having trouble deciding between the Schecter Studio 5 elite and the Ibanez 505. I can get them both used, with the Schecter in mint condition for $400 and the 505 in good condition for $350. I’d love to have anyone’s input. I know the differences in weight and neck profile, I guess I’m just curious if there’s any advantage in sound?
All seriousness your a good teacher but for a beginner your making things way to complicated I'd rather you just call out the fret numbers instead of calling out the notes and fret numbers
