Dan, don't worry about people telling you that you teach too fast- you're one of the best at simultaneously teaching/explaining both theory and application to "actual" music plus all the little details in between- I learn so much from each of your clips, including the shorts. a “secret” for any newbie bass players: if you start studying by transcribing a bass line through a patterns/shapes system (and not through a pentagram or a tab system) you will find out that the entire bass line of a track (especially in funk music) is simply a patterns/shapes sequence, so you don’t need to know the music theory/notes/scales to play a bass (you need to know music theory to know what you are playing of course…)
I got away with just using shapes for longer than I care to admit. I don't have a photographic memory so it was a while before I figured out a way to visualize the actual notes on the fretboard.

Yeah but then you aren't actually learning to play, you're just memorizing this one particular song. I have songs memorized on Piano, but I don't know how to play piano.
If break down the theory of a song you'll understand song as you learn what chords are actually being outlined in each bar, how the song was written, the chord progression of the song, and neat little relationships between intervals.
For instance, just last night I learned that a 1 - minor 6 relationship is a major 3rd if you play it backwards

I'm playing bass since 1999. I use many of those pattern cause they feel right. Learning they are actually a thing, is great. Thx for your work.

Excellent easy to play and useful patterns ! That high octave makes a good quick contrasting sound. Very nice. I am using visual diagonal patterns to find notes. For example, the octave of any note is down three strings diagonally. From the G string, the octave is up diagonally 4 strings. Makes finding them easy.

Thank you for that! As an elderly bass clarinetist playing in community bands - there is often no b/c part, and if there is one it's a boring "oom-pah" one - I've had to invent a role for the instrument and improvise my own lines. These ideas and examples are a big help!

A thought I had during the part of this video where you're showing how to use octaves is that it's pretty easy to find a dominant 7th from an octave. It's just two frets lower. Getting comfortable with that idea makes it easy to understand your scale backwards, by starting at the octave.

I have the same bass…there are persons saying that it’s a boring bass because it has always the same sound…it’s true that it has a sound only but it’s so unique and so versatile that you can play basically almost any kind of styles!

That's beautiful, I like the line of "Crazy little thing called love" by QUEEN, played on D scale A string. I like that sweet move of tones up to be repeated again on G scale on D string. You give lesson easy way to be understood, I do learn from you like these beautiful lines. I play lines to Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Temptation, James Brown and now I will add some lines from QEEN. Hey buddy; for someone just starting to learn to play: what kind of bass would you recommend?
Work out your budget and then I’d recommend going to a shop so that you can see and feel the bass. Bottom line is there are amazing cheap choices these days! Don’t overthink it but do make sure the bass is set up well. Anything will be fine if that’s the case.

These are old (ish) Elites Players (stainless steel) 44-105. They sound a bit like flats, especially with the treble rolled off.

On a 5 string do you like 34 scale or a 35 scale. People make a mistake on getting a 34 scale thinking it plays the same as a 35 scale. Whats your choice of scale on a 5 string?
If you will play in drop A or A standard in a professional way, 35" is a no brainer. For standard tuning 34" can work, Warwick and MM have a good B string at 34", so do many customs.
I had one 35" bass, it takes time to get used to it and it can be a bit difficult to play on frets 1-4, but it's easier to play higher up.
it’s very simple: I choose a bass, and I have the scale that that bass has…you can be sure that I will NOT choose a bass model depending on the scale lenght
(for example, I have a 5 strings Stingray with normal 34 scale and it’s amazing)
@@luigi.zanini As I've wrote up, if you're playing downtuned, scale length is very important. Fanned fret and 35" basses are popular in metal for a reason. I wanted to play Cradle of Filth on my Sire V7V 5 string and it sounded like garbage, A string wasn't defined.
Personally, I have one 34 (MusicMan StingRay 5) and one 34.5. I like them both and don’t really bother thinking too deeply about that stuff. If it sounds good and feels good to me, I’m in!

I’d love to be able to help out. Maybe one day but, unfortunately, I don’t have the resources right now. What I will say is that you can get a bass for really cheap these days. Not a great one but it’s fine to start with. You may need to save for a while but you can do it! Good luck.

Thanks, Dave! b6 is in the harmonic minor and natural minor. The harmonic minor is basically a natural minor with a Major 7th interval instead of minor 7.
