Dan, don't worry about people telling you that you teach too fast- you're one of the best at simultaneously teaching/explaining both theory and application to "actual" music plus all the little details in between- I learn so much from each of your clips, including the shorts. I'm certain the majority of us appreciate you're teaching style and youtube personna- keep doing what you do brother.
Couldn’t agree more 😎
Absolutely!
Thanks - really appreciate that!
Totally agreed - Dan is the Best teacher on RUclips by far and the books are great too.
Totally agree. Besides, its a video, if we don't pick something up first time we can replay it!
Simply…. Good stuff. Thanks!
a “secret” for any newbie bass players: if you start studying by transcribing a bass line through a patterns/shapes system (and not through a pentagram or a tab system) you will find out that the entire bass line of a track (especially in funk music) is simply a patterns/shapes sequence, so you don’t need to know the music theory/notes/scales to play a bass (you need to know music theory to know what you are playing of course…)
I got away with just using shapes for longer than I care to admit. I don't have a photographic memory so it was a while before I figured out a way to visualize the actual notes on the fretboard.
@@oldunclemick yes, of course I took for granted that the player has to have a good photo visual memory...
Yeah but then you aren't actually learning to play, you're just memorizing this one particular song. I have songs memorized on Piano, but I don't know how to play piano.
If break down the theory of a song you'll understand song as you learn what chords are actually being outlined in each bar, how the song was written, the chord progression of the song, and neat little relationships between intervals.
For instance, just last night I learned that a 1 - minor 6 relationship is a major 3rd if you play it backwards
@@skylee5029I told “if you are a newbie”…I am not agaist learning theory but I suggest to start from practice and arriving at theory…
exactly the contrary of the usual…
I'm playing bass since 1999. I use many of those pattern cause they feel right. Learning they are actually a thing, is great. Thx for your work.
And you make good analysis to the move and between notes, that's great.
Thanks for affirming the use of the pinkie. I've often felt less than because I default to the pinky for most 2 fret stretches due to my very average sized hands.
Superb lesson as usual Dan. 👏
Looking forward to the motown course!
superb lesson. exactly what I need
Great Bass lines for some great songs. Thanks for posting.
Love it! Thanks!!
Thanks a lot! Great lesson, TOP👍
Also, I i really appreciate this lesson. Provided some really useful information. Thanks.
Thanks for demonstrating the different bass playable pattern shapes that we can use in our playing. Your explanation is straight to the point and easy to understand plus the practical advices that goes with the demo. We will definitely learn some good bass techniques just by watching your channel.
Glad you think so. Thanks so much and I hope you learn a lot. 🙏
Awesome video, brother, as always😊
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
My pleasure!
Thanks! This is great stuff!
Thanks for keeping it real Dan ❤
You're really a terrific instructor, Dan : showing different techniques while explaining the why's and wherefores. Where were you when i started in 1974?...lol
I was 7 years from existence. 😂 Thanks very much. 🙏
Excellent easy to play and useful patterns ! That high octave makes a good quick contrasting sound. Very nice. I am using visual diagonal patterns to find notes. For example, the octave of any note is down three strings diagonally. From the G string, the octave is up diagonally 4 strings. Makes finding them easy.
Great class!
Love this!
❤ thank you for your lessons!
Glad you like them!
Music Man 4 Life !
👊
Thank you for that! As an elderly bass clarinetist playing in community bands - there is often no b/c part, and if there is one it's a boring "oom-pah" one - I've had to invent a role for the instrument and improvise my own lines. These ideas and examples are a big help!
Glad to hear it’s opening up your creativity!
Another great video! Thanks
A thought I had during the part of this video where you're showing how to use octaves is that it's pretty easy to find a dominant 7th from an octave. It's just two frets lower. Getting comfortable with that idea makes it easy to understand your scale backwards, by starting at the octave.
Absolutely - that’s a great thing to know. And lots of other intervals are also a fixed position away.
Brilliant tuition brilliantly conveyed 👍
🙏🙏
Thx Dan! Love the Music Man!
I have the same bass…there are persons saying that it’s a boring bass because it has always the same sound…it’s true that it has a sound only but it’s so unique and so versatile that you can play basically almost any kind of styles!
Great lesson Dan, thanks very much. I remember stumbling across your channel when I first got my bass and wondering if id ever understand the theory element but in time its proven to be a really useful way for me to learn, as others have said, keep doing you. 👍🏽
That’s great to know - thanks and keep up the work!
And.....its bass o'clock. Cheers Dan
Thank you, Sir
That tone is 🔥
I really like the way you teach and demonstrate
Thank you!
My dude, your videos are awesome
Glad you like them! Thank you.
Thank you, you are great teacher!
Thank you! 😃
Excellent
Thanks for the great lesson Dan. You teaching method really helps me use the shapes, scales etc. that I know in real time !🎸👍🏻😁
Thank you! They’re a lot of fun to play aren’t they.
Dan your content is so good, you are the only reason I use RUclips. thank you so much for all your hard work!
Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Hello from Florida! Dan, I watch your videos more than any other bass lesson videos on RUclips. It's so beneficial to watch your years of knowledge you share, and it excits me like a little kid to go and try it on my bass afterward. I appreciate your time, effort, and willingness to share your knowledge because it helps not only me but many others out of ruts that we occasionally get it. Please continue teaching, and thanks again! 🙏
I’m blown away: this is incredibly generous support that really helps me create lessons! Thanks so much. Please send me a direct message (dan@onlinebasscourses.com) and we can discuss me making a video lesson with something you want. Thanks again! 🙏🙏
thank you!
Great stuff 👍
Nice lesson reminds me of Carol Kay

Great lesson!
🙏🙏
Thanks a lot Dan , with this video you opened me a whole new world!! Being a beginner bassist sometimes I'm struggling to find "good" notes, well this video just did the trick! Cheers😅
Glad it helped!
Thanks great teacher
🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Dan, these bass patterns have helped me a lot!! 😀👍
Great to hear!
@@OnlineBassCourses Yes Dan, especially for my songs!! 👌😌
Dan you could make reading the phone book sound funky. Thanks for all your generous offerings.
😂 thanks
Man nice bass tone!
Thank you!
Great lesson on shapes Dan. I like the way you do these video with very useful content. Glad you were able to slip in a bit of Bernard Edwards. Have you done any videos on Paul McCartney?
Thanks! I haven’t and must remedy that soon…
Great video 👍. For me a real trip down memory lane - learning things like the riff from the theme music of The New Avengers (Purdy was such a crush! 😍).
❤❤❤ That's great I
like it so much. .God blss you Dan. I like to learn from you.
Отлич😅ный урок, классный скат! 👍 👍 👍Дэн, расскажи про свои гитары и оборудование! Это будет круто! 👍
Thanks! I will one day…
You have no idea how I'm looking forward to going back to bass after years on guitar. No more pesky B string to compensate for 🤗
Unless, of course, you play a 5 string - but our B makes sense, lol
Dude, I never really understood how much you actually know what youre talking about!! You're like a real-live working, gigging/recording bass player, WHO'DA THUNK?!! Heh heh, no offense, in fact, I'm totally impressed - you actually -ROCK-, Dan. Carry on Maestro, I sit at your feet, waiting and willing to learn... P.S. Thanks for this lesson, very powerful.
😂 thank you. Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to earn my living through bass - only job I’ve ever had and I’m in it for the long run.
george porter kind of groove at the end lol
Thanks for the clear, simple explanation of what is a 4th or a 5th. I am still rather ignorant of theory after 15 years of playing. But that turned on the light bulb somehow and I'ma at least learn the the rest of this vid.
That’s great to know. It’s not that hard once you get into it!
I love your vintage Ibanez!! Thanks for doing these great videos!
My pleasure!
cool vid! From what year uis that gorgeous bass?
Thanks! 1978.
That's beautiful, I like the line of "Crazy little thing called love" by QUEEN, played on D scale A string. I like that sweet move of tones up to be repeated again on G scale on D string. You give lesson easy way to be understood, I do learn from you like these beautiful lines. I play lines to Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Temptation, James Brown and now I will add some lines from QEEN. Please, keep up the great work.
Hi Dan, love your work. Any possibility to have a discount coupon for you courses?
Thanks very much! I might be doing one later in the year but message me now and I’ll see what I can do.

Dan, what I see on the head is a fatfinger to reduce the dead spots effect on G string?
No. It’s the back of a TC Electronic Polytune.
Hey buddy; for someone just starting to learn to play: what kind of bass would you recommend?
Work out your budget and then I’d recommend going to a shop so that you can see and feel the bass. Bottom line is there are amazing cheap choices these days! Don’t overthink it but do make sure the bass is set up well. Anything will be fine if that’s the case.
Hi Dan, what strings are you using here? Flatwounds?
These are old (ish) Elites Players (stainless steel) 44-105. They sound a bit like flats, especially with the treble rolled off.
How about some two beat fills,,,,please !!
1:33
Dan ignore the nay sayers they are just speed bumps on your teachings keep it up and I do enjoy and theory teachings are awesome 😎
Thanks, will do!
Do u do in person lessons?
Where r u located?
Hi, Rodney. I don’t do in person or online lessons at the moment. Sorry.
- That Stingray sounds great. How is the weight?
Thanks! Not sure exactly but not too heavy. It’s a 1978 so whatever weight they were!
On a 5 string do you like 34 scale or a 35 scale. People make a mistake on getting a 34 scale thinking it plays the same as a 35 scale. Whats your choice of scale on a 5 string?
If you will play in drop A or A standard in a professional way, 35" is a no brainer. For standard tuning 34" can work, Warwick and MM have a good B string at 34", so do many customs.
I had one 35" bass, it takes time to get used to it and it can be a bit difficult to play on frets 1-4, but it's easier to play higher up.
it’s very simple: I choose a bass, and I have the scale that that bass has…you can be sure that I will NOT choose a bass model depending on the scale lenght
(for example, I have a 5 strings Stingray with normal 34 scale and it’s amazing)
@@luigi.zanini As I've wrote up, if you're playing downtuned, scale length is very important. Fanned fret and 35" basses are popular in metal for a reason. I wanted to play Cradle of Filth on my Sire V7V 5 string and it sounded like garbage, A string wasn't defined.
Personally, I have one 34 (MusicMan StingRay 5) and one 34.5. I like them both and don’t really bother thinking too deeply about that stuff. If it sounds good and feels good to me, I’m in!
@@OnlineBassCourses Yup, absolutely! A bass has to jump in your lap, cuddle up and beg you to take it home with you. Apart from that, I don't really care if it's MonoNeon's Hasbro Lite-Brite bass!
👍🎶👌🏻👌🏻
How can I understand how to play jazz bass guitar?
Learn lots of theory, listen to lots of jazz, figure out the bass lines and solos and learn loads of jazz.
Thanks so much
Your location please
My pleasure! What, like GPS coordinates? 😂
Please write tabs for this
It’s kind of made up on the spot plus it’s done now. Watch closely, I usually explain how to play what I’m playing. 👍🙏
Hi I'm a Pilipino citizens learning how to play bass guitar but I don't have a guitar, I don't have enough money to buy, I'm asking for your help to buy a bass guitar
I’d love to be able to help out. Maybe one day but, unfortunately, I don’t have the resources right now. What I will say is that you can get a bass for really cheap these days. Not a great one but it’s fine to start with. You may need to save for a while but you can do it! Good luck.
I’m so confused about scales and chords I have no idea
Don’t worry, they’re easy once you know how. Check this video out: ruclips.net/video/dpJj_gnlTAc/видео.html
Great example of meat n potatoes playing, this said from a herbivore 😅 btw, nice accent!
🥩🥔 thanks!
We can't understand your tech 😢😢😢😢
What do you want to know about my tech?
Guitar players are so jealous that bass players don’t have to deal with the B string tuning anomaly so all your scales are the same everywhere.
Solos 😂….es heißt Soli
great lesson.... in the octave section, you describe playing notes of a g natural minor but in your example play the flat 6th (harmonic minor),.question. is my ear correct ?
Thanks, Dave! b6 is in the harmonic minor and natural minor. The harmonic minor is basically a natural minor with a Major 7th interval instead of minor 7.
