Hi Luke. I first bought a white Vox Clubman II in 1968 and it cost me $48 second hand. No amp, so I twisted wires together and connected it to the tone arm on an old Kriesler radiogram. It worked ok. But I made no progress, girls, cars and work got in the way and of course no money. I am 70 years old this year and with my new Yamaha bass and your videos I am making good progress despite bad arthritis, short fingers and cataracts. Being an old fart the challenge of reading music, learning keys, modes and bass techniques and appreciating the technicalities of modern music is keeping my brain active and improving my coordination. I thought of forming a band next year called "The Wrinkles" or maybe "The Dentures" , but two of my mates are having trouble with their hearing aids and the drummer hasn't got room in his Suzuki for his kit and the wheelchair lol. Luke, your lessons are clear, appropriate, and inspirational and as a former educator myself I consider you an excellent music teacher. I needed lessons like this in 1969. Thank you. Geoff. Adelaide.
Hey Geoff. I'm so glad you're finding the lessons helpful and I love your attitude. You're not letting any of those things like arthritis or short fingers get in the way of playing. I absolutely love that! I'd love for you to actually follow through and start a band. If you ever make it up North to Queensland, I'll definitely come to a show! Haha! Seriously though - I really appreciate the kind words Geoff. Thanks so much.
I have some Recommendation's The National Anthem-Radiohead Come Together-The Beatles Dazed and Confused-Led Zeppelin Disco Inferno-The Tramps Money-Pink Floyd Transmission-Joy Division
Man I found you sooner. I started playing bass a few months agoz but because my finger was broken, i could only play simple chords. Learning these bass lines has been amazing, and its helping with my technique and flow.
I'd highly recommend learning Hysteria by Muse for beginners, it's really not that hard to memorize and the only thing you have to work on is speed. And once you mastered that, I guarantee you everybody's jaw will drop if you casually bust that out on a jam session.
What helped me was writing it out on paper and going through it slowly at first. I'm still by no means perfect with it, but I'm much better than I used to be!
A little note about the trickier version of Billy Jean: On the recording the string bass plays the simple line, and the syncopated low F# is played on a Moog to have an accented and slightly distorted sound. Great channel. Subscribing.
I'm so glad you had this realization @HyperEmoLesPaul # - Some guitarists go through their whole lives without figuring this out. I'm happy you're not one of them!
So I have been trying to nail the Longview riff and it was giving me hell and I have to say going back and watching your videos about scales made it so much easier because now I recognize it’s very close to the major scale
Thanks for the list(s)! I'm using it to get more accurate with the washtub bass I built. It's like combining upright bass w/ singing, or a theremin. Sliding is a little TOO easy, and anything faster than an 8th note is futile.
You know, I'm about to buy my first guitar ever, never played a day in my life, but I have a strong passion to learn bass, so thats what I'm starting with! I've subscribed to the channel because I really enjoy the way you teach! I watched the first video before this one, and it took me until the second song before I understood how to read the tabs lol (again, I've never played so I was clueless) now I really can't wait to learn more!
I know what you mean, I started playing a bass and the first song i tried was pumped up kicks but the first mastered song was his seven nation army one, also checking in how has your bass practice been going?
@@uniformtrain6692 I mean I probably have to start all over again honestly, between 2 jobs I literally just haven't had too much time to really sit and play, I'll definitely pick it back up soon, when all our home projects are done
I am on Acoustic Bass and having trouble with Billie Jean, not sure if it's my Nub skills but it just sounds like random notes, so far everything else I've tried rfom these videos is fine but just having issues with Billie Jean.
I always thought tunes like Green Onions and Time is Tight by Booker T. would be good simple yet really cool sounding lines for novices. They're fairly easy but more importantly don't come across as just riffs or licks but are actually integral rhythms. Just my 2 cents.
Good one Ian... I met quite a few bass players who "dig" Jamiroquai and sort of can play couple of his tunes 'cause "they are so cool...", but cant play a 12bar blues line to save their life...
@@marijov2678 I want to be clear though I'm not knocking learning riffs or licks. Those are important also but only after one internalizes the ability to keep time and rhythm.
Thanks for this. I learnt the five from your first video and now I'll try to get these nailed down. Do you have any advice on left-hand technique for Billie Jean, especially the harder version? You seem to be hardly moving your first finger, laying it across the strings as if you were playing a barre chord, but it's really hard to keep up the pressure with it and still have the necessary freedom of movement in the other fingers. Are you lifting off more than we can see when it's not actually being used?
Glad you like it @Richard Poole, and good question. I guess I'm *sort of* barring with my first finger, but not the way a guitarist might if they're doing a bar chord. I'm not fretting/pressing down more than one note at a time with that finger. When the low F# is being played, I'm not pressing with the 'back' part of that finger, and when I'm playing the E on the D-string, I'm not fretting the low E-string. The 'pressure point' (or whatever you'd call it) is constantly going back and forth depending on which string needs it at the time. I think if I was barring the whole time, I'd run out of stamina super quickly. It IS kind of a subtle movement though - I'm always trying to move my fingers as little as possible to conserve energy and maximize the stamina I do have.
I've looked at the bass scales which I presume are some sort of rule as to what notes to play in th key of a song but I still can't see how they connect with these simple bits of bass. For example if I watch John Paul Jones play, he's not restricted to 6 notes in a scale, I hope this makes sense but I don't know how best to explain it.
Hiii, Im busking with the bass, started today, and was wondering... What kind of bass line dja think that I can learn?? Im a advanced bassis, not the kind to make a list Weather Report covers (yet) but I can play any RCHP song, for example PD: can´t slap, my amp is a guitar batter one, so Im tryin not to break it until I buy a Roland Micro Cube bass or similar
Can someone help me out with a question? I'm new to bass and I'm curious about his thumb placement on the E string. When plucking A,D,and G strings it seems as though his thumb is always on the E. Is this because that's what is comfortable for him or is it to keep the E string from vibrating? Or both? Or neither?
@Ian Stone - great question. It's a little of both. It's super comfortable for me to place my thumb on the E-string when I'm playing the other strings, but it *also* has the added benefit of stopping any latent E-string vibrations.
How do I identify what type of guitar my sister gave it to me she was about to pawn it or whatever but I've been playing it everything like maybe couple weeks ago haha but I identify what type of guitar who made it doesn't have any names are emblems or anything on it
How close the the frets are you playing Allan? Most of the time, the 'best' place to put your fingers when playing a note is right next to it (but not quite on top of it). If you're right in the middle between 2 frets, you need to use more strength and pressure with your fingers, which can lead to the buzzing I think you're talking about. Try moving to be super close to the frets - it might help!
