when I was 18 a long time ago I knew this guy who was a jazz guitarist. I had been playing drums for years but found myself listening to bass more and more. He said he could teach me bass. First lesson was at least two hours long. He explained whole steps half steps then he got right into the 7 modes and the different hand positions for each mode because it helped me understand it by playing it. That was lesson one. over the next few months he expanded with arpeggios, pentatonic scales, playing to chord progressions, what ever. If I wanted to learn a song, I had to go figure it out for myself. and I did. I thought were done when he hit me with harmonic minor, melodic minors and the modes, chord structures and everything else within. all by the numbers within 6 months I could play along to jazz. all because he simplified everything and cut out the bs. of course i used to practice 8 hours a day. That helped

Hey Josh! I normally don't comment on videos, but I'm a fan of yours and I can't help myself this time. You've taught me a lot about music in general, and helped me understand the integration of instruments in a band. Looking forward to more videos!
I bought a bass a few weeks ago and finally got it professionally setup and decided to give one of your lesson videos a watch. I cannot tell you how long I've been playing High and Dry and I never listen to radiohead! All the resources were there to get into bass and this was the key to open the door of possibilities, thank you!
I played my grandmother's piano for years, but it's in storage because there's not enough room in my little apartment, not even for the digital piano. My late husband left me his bass (sold off all the others except the acoustic 12-string) and after 7 years, I'm finally going to learn how to play it properly even though I fiddled with it some 30 or so years ago. Yours is the first channel that came up. No need to look further at the moment. Thanks!
I'm coming up on my first year of playing Bass. First thing i did was buy Josh's Beginner to Badass online course. Hands down the best thing for my playing.
I just ordered my first electric bass guitar. It's coming in 2 days and I'm excited. This video is gold in my opinion. I tried to learn six-string guitar about 20 years ago, but gave up. There was youtube back then and I didn't have a computer. I just want to learn bass and hopefully join a band someday. I'm an old man at 46, but this is igniting my fire lol. Thank you man!
Been playing guitar for 20 years and decided to finally start playing bass. The tip about bringing the plucking fingers back to the next string or thumb helped me tremendously.
Thank you for teaching me. I literally just bought my first bass today. I have never touched or picked up a bass until about a month ago. It's nice having your channel as an option instead of having to pay 100+ for monthly lessons.
I’ve been scrolling through several different channels that offer bass lessons for the year. I’ve been looking for a channel that has a well rounded bass lesson course that doesn’t piss me off and gives me the most bang for the buck. I can safely say that you channel has really been the go to game changing bass lesson site for me. I’m 45 and I’ve been wanting to learn the bass since I was a teenager. Im a major fan of guy like Steve Harris, Lemmy Kilmister, Geddy Lee and so on. Your courses have helped me progress faster and in a more entertaining way than any of the other sites on line. Thank you for the lessons and I hope you continue making them. For those of us out here trying to make since of all of the music theory and ready to hit someone with the bass your site helps brings me back to reality and just keep practicing. Keep rocking into the new year.
Hey there, I just bought my first bass four days ago and being able to play along to radiohead without my hands cramping up after watching your video made my week! Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to binge watching the rest of your content!
Wanted to play bass for the longest time and I received one as a Christmas present. Your videos have really helped me learn and stop the bad habits I have picked up when your first learning, especially how to pluck the strings properly and how to mute other strings when you need to. Thank you so much
I really like these lessons. I like that up what we are doing on the screen. I’ve got dyspraxia so I find coordination so hard but you’ve basically improved my playing already and I’ve been trying for a year 😅! I tend to watch the videos a few times to really get it settled in my head. Wish I would afford the course but these free lessons are brilliant.
Used this as my very 1st bass lesson 2 years ago when this video came out. Now I'm player stuff like harder/complex metallica and Lamb of God. Absolute life saver 🤘
This is exactly how a beginner’s first lesson should be 🙌🏻. It was the perfect roadmap to get it going, and covered all the absolute basics. Thanks a lot for making this video.
Josh, if only you knew what your videos mean to me. You are helping me find myself and acquire a hobby for myself that is truly healing. Once I save enough, I will be buying your course. Thank you!

I've been playing bass for a year and a half, and I had no idea that, even when switched off, keeping an active bass plugged in to the amp could drain the battery. No wonder I'm changing them so often! Thanks.

Holy Moly, these tutorials are a goldmine for people with ADHD aka me. I have never remembered things so well after a tutorial. Thank you for structuring, repeating and adding the visual aids! The humor bits in between really helped to keep focused
Now I understand, you are now uploading videos once a month... that's okay, I really like your videos because I'm also learning to play bass, thank you🙏😇🤩

The share the load bit was amazing, I use all 5 digits on my right hand (I relearned how to play with all my fingers after I broke both my wrists at the same time in middle school and then improved it learning from a classical guitar masterclass at a teachers convention in Florida in College)
My husband bought me a bass for my 60th birthday... I am having the time of my life with Josh's humorous fun videos... I researched many videos and keep coming back to Josh with his very clear simple instructions.... love it!
Picking up a bass again at age 73 after many years away from it. Watching this was a great reminder about the basics. The only thing you didn't cover was what to do when you buy that first bass and it's set up sucks ;-)
Hey Josh! Nice to see what you look like in 2021, about halfway through your course :P I hope you're doing well and thanks for being an incredible teacher!
Just to add to a comment below, I agree Josh is the best bass guitar content creator on this site. I've watched a lot. Most are either boring, too technical, or over simplified. Josh's content is never boring, adds lots of humor, and never assumes you know something. He makes sure you do by the end of the video. If you don't have his Beginner to Badass course I highly recommend it. Comes with lots of extras on the site too.
I started your beginner to badass course a while ago and now someone wants me to tutor them 🎉 Very happy with how far I’ve come and wouldn’t be possible without you 🙏 This video will help a bunch with deciding what to teach first
SUBSCRIBED. I am a newbie. Following your advice I am letting a pro, at a local music store, set it up PROPERLY. I'm 63 years old, and have enjoyed more music than you could shake a stick at. But now I am eager to 'play along' to tunes rather than just sitting & listening.
All the things I learn in bass came from this channel. I’ve played trumpet for 8 years…when I started I was in middle school, seventh grade, and now I’m 21, a music major trained in all genres and specializing in jazz who LOVES rock and metal and wanted to play bass guitar for about 5 and a half years. I’ve researched for months, saved up money, and made life long bass guitar friends that all supported me and today I got my first bass and the best part about all of this day was finding your channel. I know a LOT about music, but I am so freaking glad I saw this video before trying to play my bass for a long time because it’s an active bass and that…let’s just say could’ve been VERY bad without your pro tips haha. I love and appreciate you brother, and I WILL be watching your other videos. This one got me started off perfectly, and I feel like a little kid on Christmas. Thank you dude, have a bass’d day 🎸🎶🎧
Thanks man! Just got a bass, toyed around with it for a while, and then came straight here for my very, very, very first bass lesson. Can't wait for my pinky to stop feeling sore so I can play more.
If you had time, it would be cool if you had 2 channels..... 1 for beginner's (Bass Buzz) and 2 another for Intermediate/Advanced ( Bass Buzzed). Then you'd get twice the views and audience at least I would think. And it would be dope
Thank you for taking the time to make all these video tutorials. Have tried drums, guitar and bass throughout all this covid malarkey. Not going to lie, absolutely loved the drums but were just too impractical for me (no spare room so had to get an electronic kit and set it up and put it away every time wanted to play). Then I got a guitar and just never really clicked with it and started playing bass lines on the guitar and been having great fun. Wife is getting me a bass for Christmas, i picked up an amp last weekend and sold my guitar amp to help offset the cost of your Beginner to badass course, can't wait to get started.
Okay. So my father is getting me a bass and i already play the Upright Bass (in my schools orchestra) and seeing how the strings are the same made me let out a major sigh of relief. Decided to watch this to get a head start on my bassist journey 🙏🙏 definitely sticking around. Super entertaining for a younger viewer like me lol

I like having videos to recommend to people about basics! And your walking dude plucking demo was always a great example, but I couldn't always remember which video it was on, so it's nice to see it here! Seriously great job, I like how you managed to pack in so many useful points without it feeling like an infodump
I've tried learning the guitar but my left hand (I'm right handed) is messed up from martial arts training (first time I blocked a kick I did so with an open relaxed hand and now my pinky works in mysterious ways). I think that bass might be more up my alley. I have a good sense of rythm and usually when I am tapping my fingers along with music it's the rythm section that I follow along with. Before the guitarists reading this say that I just need to stretch my hand more and it comes with practice, let me just mansplain my condition. I hyper extended the tendons and damaged the joints in my pinky finger, when I try to extend my pinky and use it for the fret board for more than 7-10 minutes I experience excruciating pain causing my hand to cramp up and if I am holding something I won't be able to let go for a few minutes. I tried plucking a bass a friend of mine has and it was fairly easy and did not put strain on my left hand as much. What is a good beginner bass? Do I need an amplier made for the bass or can I use any electric guitar amp? I have the Fender electric guitar starter kit with the amp and I am asking because no one in Iceland will buy it used and I am thinking of recycling it somehow.
Im getting a bass guitar for Christmas and plan on doing ur course or Scott's bass lessons course I'm very excited to start playing the bass guitar and learn along the way.

I thought were done when he hit me with harmonic minor, melodic minors and the modes, chord structures and everything else within. all by the numbers within 6 months I could play along to jazz. all because he simplified everything and cut out the bs. of course i used to practice 8 hours a day. That helped

Why I'm watching this and I don't even have a bass
Might come in handy later, you never know
You are not the only one
Hey Josh! I normally don't comment on videos, but I'm a fan of yours and I can't help myself this time. You've taught me a lot about music in general, and helped me understand the integration of instruments in a band. Looking forward to more videos!
Thank you! :)
How's it going
Been playing guitar for 20 years and decided to finally start playing bass. The tip about bringing the plucking fingers back to the next string or thumb helped me tremendously.
Thank you for teaching me. I literally just bought my first bass today. I have never touched or picked up a bass until about a month ago. It's nice having your channel as an option instead of having to pay 100+ for monthly lessons.
Congrats on your bass!
Thanks Jason!
Hey there, I just bought my first bass four days ago and being able to play along to radiohead without my hands cramping up after watching your video made my week! Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to binge watching the rest of your content!
Congrats on your bass!
Glad this is helpful Lottie, that's awesome you're working through the coordination challenges! Bass on.
Hello my dear friend how are you feeling today ?
Used this as my very 1st bass lesson 2 years ago when this video came out. Now I'm player stuff like harder/complex metallica and Lamb of God. Absolute life saver 🤘
Josh…I’ve always loved to hear bass and wanted to learn. You give me training wheels…thank you!
You're welcome Mahesh, glad I could help you get started!
This is exactly how a beginner’s first lesson should be 🙌🏻. It was the perfect roadmap to get it going, and covered all the absolute basics. Thanks a lot for making this video.
He's the best bass teacher on-line!
Thanks Neal!
Josh, if only you knew what your videos mean to me. You are helping me find myself and acquire a hobby for myself that is truly healing. Once I save enough, I will be buying your course. Thank you!
I'm Practicing This On A Bass From The 1960s, Oh And It Was Funny At 0:01 When He Was Like: My Life Is So Boring! Then His Neighbor Told Him To Turn It Off
I'm getting old (53) and have injuries to both wrists, but here I am anyway. Overcoming the feeling of hopelessness is difficult but I'll never give up. Thanks for the great intro lesson.
Thanks for this, you're a natural teacher! It was very no nonsense and speaking as an absolute beginner (I literally just started this week) was very easy to follow, all the way through to the end.
Glad it was helpful!
I bought myself a bass 12 months ago and noodled around with some online bass lessons which I wasn't overly impressed by. I stumbled across BassBuzz and these videos are in a different class! All my questions answered in this one vid and now I can finally get going. Awesome man!
I've been playing bass for a year and a half, and I had no idea that, even when switched off, keeping an active bass plugged in to the amp could drain the battery. No wonder I'm changing them so often! Thanks.
Haha, yep, should come with a big warning label!
dude you’re awesome thank you for not only being so informative but you’re also really encouraging even if it meant some extra editing in the video it really helps!
Thank you so much! I am 46 and just picked up the bass a week ago and your videos are so helpful!!❤
Hello my dear friend how are you feeling today?
Holy Moly, these tutorials are a goldmine for people with ADHD aka me. I have never remembered things so well after a tutorial. Thank you for structuring, repeating and adding the visual aids! The humor bits in between really helped to keep focused
who just casually buys a 1000 dollar bass
Me
U umm impulse buying is not good. Lol umm ive never done that
kebo7kevyn does
Uh…me actually today. Picked up a 60th anniversary fender p bass
I just bought a $90 one on Amazon, it works good for starting out
How to sound more funky? Muting the strings in between plucks will leave some space where the funk can get out.
Loved it.
wake up babe new bass buzz video
Man that was fun! Just collected my bass this morning. First ever lesson. I'll be back!
Now I understand, you are now uploading videos once a month... that's okay, I really like your videos because I'm also learning to play bass, thank you🙏😇🤩
Thanks Vavuna! Yeah, something like that lately. I know a month of the internet seems like a looooooong time :)
as someone with chronic hand pain, i greatly appreciate the section just on hand placement to mitigate unnecessary strain. i’m hopefully getting my first bass today :)! thank you
The share the load bit was amazing, I use all 5 digits on my right hand (I relearned how to play with all my fingers after I broke both my wrists at the same time in middle school and then improved it learning from a classical guitar masterclass at a teachers convention in Florida in College)
My husband bought me a bass for my 60th birthday... I am having the time of my life with Josh's humorous fun videos... I researched many videos and keep coming back to Josh with his very clear simple instructions.... love it!
Happy birthday!
"leave some space so the funk can get out" .... that shit is deep man :D
Thanks, glad you're enjoying the course!
I started your beginner to badass course a while ago and now someone wants me to tutor them 🎉
Very happy with how far I’ve come and wouldn’t be possible without you 🙏
This video will help a bunch with deciding what to teach first
That's great LJ!
Been thinking about the Badass course. So it’s legit LJ??
SUBSCRIBED. I am a newbie. Following your advice I am letting a pro, at a local music store, set it up PROPERLY.
I'm 63 years old, and have enjoyed more music than you could shake a stick at. But now I am eager to 'play along' to tunes rather than just sitting & listening.
Always amazing editing and superb teaching. Thank you 😊
Thanks!
Barely over 55 and just bought my first beginner bass. Your videos are great.
Thanks Isabelle, congrats on your new bass! 🎸
Can we all just appreciate how much work and creativity was put into making this video?? Wow! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
All the things I learn in bass came from this channel. When I was starting I don't know where I gonna start not until I discover this channel and it help me a lot on my begining stage. 2 years have pass and I still have more things to learn. Thanks mr. Josh for your informative videos. Every month I'm waiting you to upload videos. Thanks a lot
Thanks Rejano!
I'm a badass beginner but Josh's course made me badass'ier!
Amazing as always josh! U are a underrated great teacher, thank you!
Thanks Luis!
This video finally got me to go out and buy a strap, and holy cow it is so much more comfy to play
"Always play with a strap on..." *psycho sound*
I watched this a few hours ago and I keep randomly bursting out laughing.
😛
Great beginner bass video. I always remembered the strings as Elephants And Donkeys Grow. Bass on! 👍
edge or eadg
Eadg not edge
Thank you dude, have a bass’d day 🎸🎶🎧
Thank you Josh, EXCELLENT video!!!
Thank you!
Thanks man! Just got a bass, toyed around with it for a while, and then came straight here for my very, very, very first bass lesson.
Can't wait for my pinky to stop feeling sore so I can play more.
This is an old video however...I PLAYED A SONG!
I'm getting ready to start my bass lessons Monday and watch your videos
strap on got me 😂
Josh, you've made a dream come true. My bass came today, and I've been following along. Thank you!
help i accidentally learned how to play bass like a guitar
You can do that.
There are chords in bass.

First time holding a bass, and I'm already feeling like I've played for years. helpful af, love it
If you had time, it would be cool if you had 2 channels..... 1 for beginner's (Bass Buzz) and 2 another for Intermediate/Advanced ( Bass Buzzed). Then you'd get twice the views and audience at least I would think. And it would be dope
Actually he does have a channel for intermediate to advanced. It is named after him. Look up Josh Fossgreen.
You're welcome Kev, enjoy the course!
I don’t even have my bass yet but I’ve watched this video twice already lol
Edit: three times
Nice all in one lesson
Btw can you make a what makes him great episode about Joe Dart from Vulfpeck
About a year ago, my grandpa got me my first bass setup, a dean edge 5 string and a small Peavey bass amp. I ended up stumbling across this video, and I am so happy I did. I may not have gotten as far as I have without it, thanks Josh!
You have taught me so much in the last few months, thank you!
You're welcome!
You make the famous saying so true that: "You hear the Music, but WE feel the BASS!" Thanks so much, Josh. Super Cool. 😊
Thank you, I watch this with sub and happy:)
OK ! I think i am going with you ! I just bought myself a U5 short scale!
I just turned 61 ! It's never too late to start 🎸🎸🎸
Watch out Marcus Miller, i am coming 😄
You're the best
This comment gets extra points due to your pfp of Inosuke pointing, as if he's pointing at Josh.
@@vigorouslethargy Inosuke butchering Josh's name while thanking him
Nice Video 🙌🎸
Thanks!
Just bought a bass guitar and am trying to learn to play this year. Thanks for the tips man!! Great vids 👍
Good luck and don't let go
Maybe I should get a bass
U get one?
I hope you did
My friend was gonna give me his but,he passed away
@@jasminduncanson2520 too bad more reason to start now
Been a drummer for 11 years always loved bass Aswell this video helped me understand alot more about the instrument and how to transition my drum practice
Fun fact - I *knew* I was gonna use that Lord of the Rings clip way before I’d planned most of the lesson. We wantsed it, precious… 👽💍
😊hi josh
Hey Josh, I’d love to see an intermediate course and I’m willing to pay for it!
Hi Josh. Are you using flatwound strings? 🤔
Been playing for years, love coming back to this video, it’s like a checkup lol
Josh you’re so adorable!!😁
🤓
Im getting a bass guitar for Christmas and plan on doing ur course or Scott's bass lessons course I'm very excited to start playing the bass guitar and learn along the way.
Hi Josh! Yesterday I've got a surprise gift from my hubby: an Ibanez Bass Guitar!!!! He knows I just love this instrument! So I've searched the Internet for a good teacher and I found the best: you! So today I'm beginning with your lessons and I will inform you about my progress. I'm all hyped up! 🌞
