@Bass Buzz Thank you for making this! My bf is a beast on upright jazz bass, he always has gigs, ppl love him. He got me such a nice cute bass for my birthday back in March, it's a mint-colored SX vintage series. I bought a stand so it will stare at me and beg to be played, and it has done so for a few months to no avail. It's daunting and I felt very discouraged with the added pressure of it being a lovely gift. He got me a cool strap and put tape-wounds on it to motivate me recently. I am still shy to practice when he is around, despite him being a kind & patient teacher. Having your lesson while he's gone is helping a lot! I played flute for a year in jr high, then percussion for 2 years, then dance classes for 4 years. I still feel like I'm more suited to dancing than playing, my sisters and I have always danced, whereas my bf has a very hard time letting loose for it haha. With your help I'm doing my best to give it another go! Plus I love the Talking Heads so you won me over at the start haha. Gah long comment BUT SERIOUSLY thank you SO MUCH! I hope teaching music has brightened your life with abundance & joy. You seem genuinely happy to do so
Having never played, but always loved the 70’s style electric bass playing, my husband gifted me with a beautiful black and white Fender Precision Bass and Fender amp for my 61st birthday last month. I’m so happy to have found this video and your channel! Thank you for providing quality beginner bass lessons. Your teaching style and pleasant demeanor is paramount to someone like me. Thank you 😊 ❤
My dad recently found a bass in our basement (bassment? Lol) and asked if I wanted it, and I thought what the heck, I’m already learning guitar- why not? So I found your videos right away and the first thing I realized (after how much fun I’ll probably end up having with bass) is how much I was neglecting my pinkie as a guitarist! My other fingers are totally fine, but that little sucker got worn out after less than ten minutes. Anyway, your videos for beginners are super fun, genuinely informative, and have me really excited about getting into bass :) Thanks, man!
heh heh heh heh heh you think using your pinky on a electric bass is heard try the e string on a double bass not mentioning verbrato oh god now i can crush a mans skull with only my pinky

Another East bass line for starters is Zombie by the cranberries. Anybody who grew up in the 90’s listening to alternative or grunge will recognize it. It was one of the first song I learned when I bought my first bass and I was self taught. It’s recognizable and gets you in the motion of moving frets and lines. It’s a great starter.
Dude, you are an incredible teacher...you deserve many more subscribers than you already have. I have played guitar for over 30 years and just decided to buy a bass this week and learn to play it (properly) to expand my jam session horizons; thanks to your tutelage I have already improved a vast amount. Thanks for everything you do.
I have to tell you. I've been playing bass for a long time and watching your videos is definitely helping me clean up some bad habits I didn't even know I had. So thanks for that.

Finally found time (during this COVID-19 pandemic) to try that bass that I bought my boyfriend years ago. I guess it was really for me...you have made trying to learn this instrument so fun and understandable. I love how you break down the class and use songs that I like and/or am familiar with! Also, love that you do not assume we know everything or anything. So perfect for a complete beginner. Thank you for making this available and FREE. You are too generous. It is much appreciated.

Hey, this is great. I learnt bass in the mid 80s self taught. After a 25 year or so break I'm back with the bass guitar, so I'm looking through a few websites to get up to speed again. This lesson is absolutely awesome and covers so much technique with simple examples. Just one simple example, that lift but keep muting with the left hand is so important to bass playing. It's not difficult but you need to know that it's a thing that bass players do. You guys are so lucky having this thing called youtube with hundreds of videos giving such a great start to beginners. Thanks so much Josh.
Two friends from school happened to know drums and lead guitar, and the lead guitarist was in the chorus, so he also wanted to do vocals naturally, this left the bass. Now im Using your tutorial to get better.
I agree. The Peavey he normally played on his older videos is a high end piece. I like that he doesn't have that attitude that affordable can be great.
Thank you so much for these videos, Josh! They’ve helped me so much to understand and appreciate the bass, as well as become closer to the music I grew up with. Sometimes it’s tough when you’re learning an instrument on your own but the internet is a wonderful tool and I’m so glad I found your channel!. Keep up the good work (:
Tina Weymouth is amazing to learn from like Sting. She actually played the A strings open with her index or something before going down to 3rd fret G with her thumb (on Psychokiller). She had her own way of doing things. But I really adore her as a bassist. But yes doing the 5th fret works. But if you wanna try her awkward way... Watch her live. Also Josh if you don't have an entire episode dedicated to Tina, I'd suggest it. 4:47
I don't recommend learning 21 Guns and then immediately deciding to try playing along with the Broadway musical version, without looking for the chords first. Very nice! I'm a life-long guitarist, but I recently started playing bass so I could have it on my recordings. I could not find a bassist to play. We even recorded a couple albums like Justice. But I love bass. I wanted to play bass before guitar. It just happened to work out that my parents decided guitar not bass. I just got a P bass and I had it set up in B flat. I'm loving the added frequencies on my recordings! Now I just have to get some decent technique going with the right hand. This lesson was so helpful for me. Thank you for recording it and sharing. It gave me several great jumping off points.

This video really helped me out brotha. Still having trouble reading tabs, but this simplified it & was able to at least go along with these songs. Makes me happy to see progress thank you brother.
Thanks so much you have clarified things simply quickly and easy to understand great work teacher!!
thank you so much! bought a bass today, never played, was able to learn 21 guns from your video! a lot of going back and watching again, but it's my first song i could play on my first day!
I pretty much did the same thing! I've had my first bass for a week and found Josh on Day 2 or 3 and love that 21 Guns riff. I now finally know something about Green Day, too (not on my radar when they became popular)! ~ Chuck
Okay so I’m usually a woodwind player so going from that to bass was a bit of a jump so I see this video and I’m like “oh this’ll be fun, no way I can fuck this up!”
*I immediately fucked it up.*
First song: Yeah! I got this!
Second song: ... no.
Hey Josh, I just want to say that you are a great bass teacher from BassBuzz, and very good at teaching the timing with tabs, and it helps
Thank you!
just got my first bass and i already feel like a pro because of this 8)
Nice! Congrats on your bass. :)

8:20 He just couldn't help but start "Debaser"

So So glad I found Josh!!! Amazing teaching lessons!!
Damn man, I am just starting out and you are the best teacher yet. Thanks! Subscribed.
Thanks Brian!
Thank you for this video, LOVE the way you instruct! I don't want to beat myself up as quickly.
Thanks Ted!
This is awesome! Had to slow down the videos a bit to start but I was able to speed up in the end
Who needs to spend mega bucks when a Squier jazz bass sounds like that!!
My beginner riffs were Stand By Me, Blitzkrieg Bop, & Someday by The Strokes.
I started learning bass 4 days ago and what i noticed is that i can‘t play something on the bass like improvising out of nothing but if you give me a simple riff i can fill in random notes and most of the time it sounds good so this tutorial helped me play something thanks!
Great video. Thanks ! My beginner's songs are:
- U2 with or without you
- Pink Floyd another brick in the wall (part 2)
- The Police every breath you take
- The Cure Just like heaven
And another one bites the dust
Yesterday I started playing bass but my fingers are way too small😂
There are ways to make it work Aron! Or you can try a short scale bass if it's really not working, they're still legit.
Dude im still a kid with small hnds and im *O K* Not realy good but I an play
I have huge hands but I still can’t get proper control of my fingers. I’m having to undo 25 years of bad fretting.
That last riff bangs my dude, thanks
