@Bass Buzz Thank you for making this! My bf is a beast on upright jazz bass, he always has gigs, ppl love him. He got me such a nice cute bass for my birthday back in March, it's a mint-colored SX vintage series. I bought a stand so it will stare at me and beg to be played, and it has done so for a few months to no avail. It's daunting and I felt very discouraged with the added pressure of it being a lovely gift. He got me a cool strap and put tape-wounds on it to motivate me recently. I am still shy to practice when he is around, despite him being a kind & patient teacher. Having your lesson while he's gone is helping a lot! I played flute for a year in jr high, then percussion for 2 years, then dance classes for 4 years. I still feel like I'm more suited to dancing than playing, my sisters and I have always danced, whereas my bf has a very hard time letting loose for it haha. With your help I'm doing my best to give it another go! Plus I love the Talking Heads so you won me over at the start haha. Gah long comment BUT SERIOUSLY thank you SO MUCH! I hope teaching music has brightened your life with abundance & joy. You seem genuinely happy to do so

So I found your videos right away and the first thing I realized (after how much fun I’ll probably end up having with bass) is how much I was neglecting my pinkie as a guitarist! This lesson is absolutely awesome and covers so much technique with simple examples. Just one simple example, that lift but keep muting with the left hand is so important to bass playing. It's not difficult but you need to know that it's a thing that bass players do. You guys are so lucky having this thing called youtube with hundreds of videos giving such a great start to beginners. Thanks so much Josh.

I don't recommend learning 21 Guns and then immediately deciding to try playing along with the Broadway musical version, without looking for the chords first. You'll spend most of your time panicking, as you try to figure out what key you're in, and by the time you figure it out, they'll change to a different one! 🤣

Very much enjoy your teaching style! Nice job breaking it down for beginners, great clarity.
I've been playing for many years and now my son is learning to play. While I've given him 2-3 lessons, it's really helpful to have him learn from your videos, too. It gives him access to someone else's voice, tips, & attitude. If he keeps going, I'll set him up with a local teacher (there's only so much you want to learn from "Dad").

Very nice! I'm a life-long guitarist, but I recently started playing bass so I could have it on my recordings. I could not find a bassist to play. We even recorded a couple albums like Justice. But I love bass. I wanted to play bass before guitar. It just happened to work out that my parents decided guitar not bass.
I just got a P bass and I had it set up in B flat. I'm loving the added frequencies on my recordings! Now I just have to get some decent technique going with the right hand. This lesson was so helpful for me. Thank you for recording it and sharing. It gave me several great jumping off points.
