Way back in high school my guitar teacher was teaching us how to play acoustic guitar and she taught us to think of it this way to memorize the strings: EADGBE “Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie”. That is STILL stuck in my head 10 years later.
Thank you. As a beginner bass player and a former teacher of 35 years, I appreciate the content and structure of your lessons. I played my first song, High and Dry, with you. It is part of my warm up.
You are the FIRST person who has successfully got me to understand the layout of the scales on a keyboard! I'm so thrilled and looking forward to learning bass guitar with your lessons! Seriously...I'm almost in tears...I thought I was too old (52) and/or too dumb to ever learn this stuff.

I bought a Bass 5 years ago and I've paid for Bass lessons...After watching this video, in less than 20 minutes, I've learnt and understood from you for free, what I've not learnt in 5 years of paying for classes. This is by far the best Bass lessons on the WWW :)
In my beginner book it had a little phrase called “Big Cats Eat Fish” to remember that there was no flat or sharp notes between B,C & E,F. Helped me immensely!
I was 14 when I had my first bass lesson (48 years ago!). The teacher told me, “Don’t memorize the fretboard, FEEL it.” I can’t tell you how much that stunted my progress as a bass player. And how embarrassing it was whenI first tried jamming with others! Your lessons are, hands down, the easiest on-ramp to playing the bass. Genius really. Even at my ripe age I’m learning a ton. Keep it up.
i played guitar solo for 14 years and never undertand the note theory. this year i wanna try to play bass bcause got boring with my guitar. After watching this video, i learn both the note theory& picking the bass. only in 19 minutes. nice video. so clear!
You are seriously blowing my mind. I just bought a bass during Black Friday and just went with tabs (where it shows numbers and stuff). I looked at a few things for beginners, but this is the first one where literally everything made sense to me. You are making it so easy on this video, and I have to thank you for it. Thanks!
I've been playing bass for over a year and a half but because I'm self taught I've been too lazy to teach myself anything other than how to play basslines! This has been super helpful and easy to follow, I finally feel like a real musician! Thank you!!
Jamming has always seemed completely out of reach for me, like I've learned songs on other instruments, but not had the understanding of the instrument and music in general to even think about just jamming with someone, and now, watching this while waiting for my bass to arrive it suddenly seems achievable for the first time. Can't wait to learn to play now
As an absolute novice I have felt the idea of jamming as my worst nightmare but, having just watched this video I am now so willing to give it a go. Such a simple way of learning, THANK YOU!
Josh, just wanted to take the time to say that I really appreciate vids like this on youtube. I’ve been playing bass for almost 30 years. I know this theory almost too well to be able to explain it clearly to a student. Not sure that even makes sense? I am currently teaching the next generation...my son how to play. Your tutorial makes it very easy to understand the fundamentals and breaks it down in a simple and clean methodology for finding root notes, memorizing how sharp/ flat works and when and how to play these notes. Very well done! Inside of just 20 mins you have found a way to take what took me many lessons of non-usable theory and turned it into getting right to a jam session. Exactly WHAT EVERYONE wants to do. Jam! Thanks!
As someone who has been trying to learn to play the bass this is, by far, the best video I've seen. The other ones just confused the heck out of me but you make it so easy to understand. Can't wait to get back to practicing!
I actually understand it. I am so stoked! I am 71 and embarking on my journey to learn bass. The most interesting thing is when I picked up bass, I heard the base in every song! I couldn't sort it out before. My songwriting and mixing are better, and I think I am in beginner heaven. You are a very good teacher. I appreciate the humor, too! ❤
You’re an amaZING TEACHER THANK YOU SO MUCH ! I’ve been playing bass for 4 years but I never had enough money for lessons so I’ve just been playing by ear never truly knowing the notes I was playing so thank you!
I don’t really comment on RUclips, but I just felt compelled to share my experience here. I’m 22, just bought my first bass 2 days ago after a while of feeling an urge to play, loving the bass lines dearly in the songs I love and listen to most. I started guitar lessons in 2021, bought my electric and everything, it felt great and I did it for a few months, but I lost motivation to continue oddly enough… Tried picking it back up again a few weeks ago, but again wasn’t feeling it. Kept fighting the urge to play bass even though I’ve had such a desire to, due to various reasons, such as hearing from some people, “Learning guitar first before bass is essential,” which I found now isn’t necessarily true. Decided to take the leap of faith and try bass, and I am loving the sound so much already and feel so fulfilled. Your lessons help so freaking much for people who don’t have the opportunity (whether it be time or financial) to take in-person lessons from a teacher, like myself at the moment. You explain things so incredibly well, and I feel like a curious kid with a lot of wonder, watching this and being able to translate the keys on the piano to the fretboard. You’re an amazing teacher and your pacing and humor just adds to it, thank you so, so much for these videos (from myself and everyone else watching this pursuing bass for the first time!) My motivation to keep playing is tenfold! 💗✨🥹
Dude I’ve been playing bass for 7 years and I thought learning the chords would be hard and you made them feel so easy to learn, you literally made me mad about the last 7 years of my life
Genuinely helpful. Joining a jazz band and having never played bass before or played with others, this is enough to get me through a few sessions before I fully dive in.
OMG! This is the BEST video explained it all. I'm piano player and just started to learn how to play bass, you made absolutely astonishing job to explain it. I literally was staring on strings missing piano keys because strings, even 4, made no sense to me and was SO puzzling! Thank you for your time and effort you've put into that content.
Just recently decided to start playing music again, working on learning how to play guitar, but started playing bass at 15, 36 years ago. Played on & off(mostly off) since my 30's. Watched your are you an intermediate bass player, & when you mentioned money notes I was like damn, time to start from scratch. Your first lesson showed me my fretting fingers were out of position, but now you taught me the money notes & I'm finding a ton of excercises to correct them. Such as playing them in different keys(started with A on the 5th fret), & am forcing myself to learn the notes. Also found an excercise to practice micro moving instead of stretching, all on the G string to start with the money notes in A(E-D-C downwards), sounds like figaro. Helping me correct my fretting finger bending. You can teach an old dog new tricks, thank you.
I know this is an old(ish) video, but if you see this I just want to say that you're an amazing teacher. You made the fret notes so incredibly easy that's it's amazing. Well done and thank you!
I can't recommend this guy enough. Learned so much from his videos and now his course. These are the foundations of playing for free and it's amazing. Thanks Josh!
Yes it's a fine line between "fretting" and getting "board" by the topic, so your feedback has been "noted." Have to dash, the Pun Police just knocked at the door...🚔🤓
I'm a lefty and bought a left-handed 4 string (fret) a few years ago..figuring I'd play along with my son that started to take guitar lessons. I just dusted it off because I met a neighbor that use to play lead guitar in a band......and, (after a couple of beers..lol)...thought I should give it another try! Well...after I watched your video...I instantly played the bass line from Red House (Hendrix) and Ain't No Sunshine (Withers)! Since I play the boards (self-taught)...your explanation connected the dots for me. Kinda kicking myself that I couldn't figure this out myself!! (SMH) Needless to say, I am a new subscriber, and excited learn from your content! But right now....my fingers hurt (and I just ordered some nylon gloves!) "Nuff respect and appreciation!" BigDog
As a complete nooblette that was told by my boss to pick up the bass for our company rock band, I felt that this was exactly what I needed. First time reading bass tabs without this, I basically had my head exploding trying to google how to play each note as the band kept going lol. Now with the EADG and your explanation, so much easier to find these notes!!
Thank you so much sir. These were extremely helpful due to their oversimplified nature, I don't have to worry when I'm asked to jam by my friends. Hands down the best bass teacher on RUclips in my opinion, I really feel comfortable with you.
This was amazing. I just restarted learning bass and in this one video I fully learned the notes on the fret very easily. Feels like I just learned magic. Forever thankful and will be watching all of your videos on my new journey.
Well done. Learning the notes on the fretboard takes time. I practice the fret board alphabet, pretty much every time I play. One trick, I find helpful, is a note on the E or A string, is the same note when you go both two strings up and two frets higher (or over). I call it “Two Up Two Over” (or 2^/2>) and here’s what I mean... E string (G is on third fret) A string D string (G is on fifth fret) G string or E A (B is on second fret) D G (B is on fourth fret) Sometimes my mind goes blank, when I have to hit a specific note on a certain string, but 2^/2> helps me quickly reorient myself on the fret board.
Although I've been playing for more years than I choose to disclose I find your way of teaching much easier for the student then my way. Hammer on Josh I want to see what other tips I can steal of yours to put in my arsenal.
Thank you so, so much for this! My 10 year old is learning to play, and I'm attempting to help him learn...though I have no music-playing background myself. This helps a TON. So far he's refused to take traditional lessons (he has functioning autism and severe ADHD, so it's a little complicated) but your videos, which we can pause and come back to, are phenomenal!
Having learnt music on the piano but wanting to learn bass this was exactly the video I needed. It was hard to wrap my head around the note locations without the visual cue of white and black keys that I'm used to.
When I was playing bass, I actually just got a chart that had all the notes on the fret board. I did not want to just learn tabs, 0 is not a note, I wanted to be a bit more educated about my instrument. But what you just showed on this video is a very smart way of learning music rather than just looking at a chart and seeing where the notes are and remembering. This is using music theory and knowing where notes are and why they are there. I really do appreciate you video here.
I was cracking my head open trying to memorize all. This was awesome. I knew it was symmetrical etc. But this was the best lesson. Beginner here. Gonna pick my bass now. Thanks man!!!
This was very well explained. Additionally, I watched it WITHOUT the bass in my hands which I believe made it even easier to understand, for when I pick it up next.
Josh, you're amazing. I got your course 3 days ago when I randomly decided I wanted to learn bass and it was the best decision I ever made. I'm absolutely OBSESSED with the instrument, and right away I started playing songs! After less than a week I'm looking for tabs for my favorite tunes. Thank you!
I'm 69 yrs old and I have a 5 string bass guitar a bass player told me to begin with the eadg notes first and learn the notes But you are showing me the real dynamic of playing and I tell thank you.
No matter what level you are, there's always a new discovery going back to basics. You're an Excellent Teacher. I really appreciate how easy and enjoyable you make the Wonderful Bass to understand. Thank you!🦋
Josh this is the best video for a beginner on the net! I've been playing guitar now for 3 years and started with bass. I wanted to revisit this video because it made learning very easy for me. If anyone asks me how to get started my answer is always to point them to your site. Thank you so much for inspiring me and helping me with my musical journey.
This is really helpful. I'm getting back into playing bass again after 20+ years and this is the exact refresher I needed before attempting things I've only heard and never played like a walking bass line. Never too late to learn. Great job.
A billion and a half years ago, i was was grateful to friend ( a real bass player) showing me the "up 2 frets/ across 2" octave finder. That in turn helped me find the other surrounding notes,
Yeah, it's great how easy it is to use that shape (and others) on bass since we're tuned symmetrically, it's trickier for guitar players with that infernal B string.
(F)ather (C)ristmas (G)ot (D)ad (A)n (E)lectric (B)ass...a guitarist taught me this many moons ago to learn scales...which in turn taught me the notes of the fretboard...
I'm no musical instrument player. Just someone *this close* to an educational degree. From a teaching standpoint, your lessons are engaging. Easy to understand too. If I pick up this instrument, I'm watching your lesson to learn.
Everyone: Re watch the segment where he says he is not making money, to the point where it becomes the most watched segment, and RUclips panics and attempts to throw an ad there. It sucks for the viewer, but I think it would be funny for him to be proven wrong. Love you boss, thanks for the lessons.
I need 100 more lessons of this level. Old chick, crappy memory. I have been goofing around with my bass, jamming with no rhyme or reason, just lots of rhythm, dancing around my living room, amp blasting. Now I have to buckle down and learn something. I am very visual so your visuals are awesome. Thanks
Hi Josh. Wanted to play bass for years - I sing second bass and play acoustic guitar. Bought a second-hand Ibanez TMB 100 and ready to roll. Your lessons are incredibly helpful and I am asking the family for the online course for my 64th birthday in a short while. Looking forward to learning with you.
I am literally waiting for my very first instrument, Da bass, and watching this video is already making things easy to understand. Also, because I’m not a musician (yet) I was blown away by the correlation between the piano notes and the bass. It makes sooo much sense. Thank you soo much for your videos, I sincerely hope you understand how helpful your videos are!

I bought a Bass 5 years ago and I've paid for Bass lessons...After watching this video, in less than 20 minutes, I've learnt and understood from you for free, what I've not learnt in 5 years of paying for classes. This is by far the best Bass lessons on the WWW :)
I've been playing bass for 2+ years but i found it impossible to learn chords so i stuck to tabs and this saved me! thank you so much!
You're welcome!
After watching this video, i learn both the note theory& picking the bass. only in 19 minutes. nice video. so clear!
Bro, I'm stupid as a door and I'm learning from you! thanks for being here! Wish you all the best!
You're welcome Julio! Glad some info is making it through the doorway. :)
You are seriously blowing my mind. I just bought a bass during Black Friday and just went with tabs (where it shows numbers and stuff). I looked at a few things for beginners, but this is the first one where literally everything made sense to me. You are making it so easy on this video, and I have to thank you for it. Thanks!
You're welcome Ceielo!
I've been playing bass for over a year and a half but because I'm self taught I've been too lazy to teach myself anything other than how to play basslines! This has been super helpful and easy to follow, I finally feel like a real musician! Thank you!!
As someone who already knows theory, but just doesn’t know where the notes are on the bass, this guy is my saviour!! 🙏🙏🙏
Glad it helped Natasha!
Jam! Thanks!
Thank you Joe!
Decided to learn bass to combat the quarantine brain fuzzies. This has been the best instructional video I’ve seen - thanks!! 🎸
Glad it helped Kat!
As someone who has been trying to learn to play the bass this is, by far, the best video I've seen. The other ones just confused the heck out of me but you make it so easy to understand. Can't wait to get back to practicing!
Glad it helped Joseph!
You're welcome AJ!
I learned english and chord notes at the same time, gracias buddy.
Josh, you are one of the best bass instructors here that actually teaches. Great job and you have that gift. Keep it up.
I picked up a Bass when I was 58. Learned how to play watching RUclips. Been in a Band ever since. Finally living my lifelong Dream~ I Luv the Bass
Nice!
Dude I’ve been playing bass for 7 years and I thought learning the chords would be hard and you made them feel so easy to learn, you literally made me mad about the last 7 years of my life
Glad it was easy to learn, sorry to make you full of regret. 😜
You're welcome! Glad it all clicked for you.
Best video so far for beginners. Thanks Josh. Very very well done and easy to follow and understand.
🎸
You're welcome!
I can't recommend this guy enough. Learned so much from his videos and now his course. These are the foundations of playing for free and it's amazing. Thanks Josh!
Thank you! :)
Great job Josh. I was "fretting" about it until you explained it. Job well done!!! 👍💗😊
Yes it's a fine line between "fretting" and getting "board" by the topic, so your feedback has been "noted." Have to dash, the Pun Police just knocked at the door...🚔🤓
@@BassBuzz well played Josh! Good to have a "word ninja" such as yourself to have a palaver with. Keep up the good work! 👍😊💗
You're welcome Chinmay!
This was amazing. I just restarted learning bass and in this one video I fully learned the notes on the fret very easily. Feels like I just learned magic. Forever thankful and will be watching all of your videos on my new journey.
My childhood doubts are cleared by this video. I got confidence now to learn base guitar. Thank you very much.
Go for it! :)
E string (G is on third fret)
A string
D string (G is on fifth fret)
G string
or
E
A (B is on second fret)
D
G (B is on fourth fret)
Sometimes my mind goes blank, when I have to hit a specific note on a certain string, but 2^/2> helps me quickly reorient myself on the fret board.
My husband has been trying to explain this to me with no luck, however YOU good sir have opened my eyes.
Although I've been playing for more years than I choose to disclose I find your way of teaching much easier for the student then
my way. Hammer on Josh I want to see what other tips I can steal of yours to put in my arsenal.
Thanks Richard!
You're so welcome Emily! Glad I can help.
Emily D Good luck to your son!
This is so helpful, 20 minutes ago I had no clue as to what a G sharp or E flat was, no I know it like the back of my hand!
Glad it helped Haydn!
@@BassBuzz I'm getting a bass next month and your channel is the perfect place to get started!
I was cracking my head open trying to memorize all. This was awesome. I knew it was symmetrical etc. But this was the best lesson. Beginner here. Gonna pick my bass now. Thanks man!!!
Glad this helped Jaime!
This was very well explained.
Additionally, I watched it WITHOUT the bass in my hands which I believe made it even easier to understand, for when I pick it up next.
Oh man, where have you been when i was a beginner. I learn all of this with yellings of my buddies. Im playing bass since 2014!
Thank you!
I'm 69 yrs old and I have a 5 string bass guitar a bass player told me to begin with the eadg notes first and learn the notes
But you are showing me the real dynamic of playing and I tell thank you.
you could be the best teacher i have ever watched, thanks a lot
Thank you! 🐶
Holy damn this is by far one of the best bass beginner guides out there. thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Excellent lesson. You are an awesome teacher for the bass! Thanks!
Thank you!
Josh just reminding you that you're an absolute goat and I'm so glad we have you in the guitarist community
No matter what level you are, there's always a new discovery going back to basics. You're an Excellent Teacher. I really appreciate how easy and enjoyable you make the Wonderful Bass to understand. Thank you!🦋
You have a great way of teaching stuff that would otherwise be boring af. I'm really digging your channel so far. Keep it up man!
Thank you! Trying to remove the word "boring" from the phrase "music theory." :)
I’m just starting to learn bass and appreciate the lessons, best I could find.
Thanks Gilbert!
Don't have a bass but I'm getting my first one for Christmas. Thx for helping me get prepared. These are really helpful :)
Nice! Hope you dig your bass. :)
How is it just got one as well
Big smokes S me too!
Morgan :-] cool! How is it so far learnt another one bites the dust now but i think that is pretty standard
Big smokes S That’s awesome!! I haven’t gotten that far yet, just trying to learn the notes and stuff...but I am hoping to get there :-)
Josh this is the best video for a beginner on the net!
Great job.
I cannot thank you enough! I'm starting to feel confident as a beginner bassist!
Good to hear Claire, glad I could help! 😊
What tips or tricks helped you learn your bass fretboard notes the most?
A billion and a half years ago, i was was grateful to friend ( a real bass player) showing me the "up 2 frets/ across 2" octave finder. That in turn helped me find the other surrounding notes,
Yeah, it's great how easy it is to use that shape (and others) on bass since we're tuned symmetrically, it's trickier for guitar players with that infernal B string.
@@stuart8663 Same here. From the ones I know I jump to wherever I need. Also the fifths help a lot.
This video
(F)ather (C)ristmas (G)ot (D)ad (A)n (E)lectric (B)ass...a guitarist taught me this many moons ago to learn scales...which in turn taught me the notes of the fretboard...
This NEEDS to be the first video anyone who's new to bass/music should watch. Thanks so much!
You're welcome Kyle!
I'm no musical instrument player. Just someone *this close* to an educational degree. From a teaching standpoint, your lessons are engaging. Easy to understand too. If I pick up this instrument, I'm watching your lesson to learn.
Thanks Paolo!
Everyone:
Re watch the segment where he says he is not making money, to the point where it becomes the most watched segment, and RUclips panics and attempts to throw an ad there.
It sucks for the viewer, but I think it would be funny for him to be proven wrong.
Love you boss, thanks for the lessons.
this was my very first bass lesson and it was super helpful, thank you!
Welcome to the bass family!

Hope this helps someone :)
cool
Nice!!! Thanks!!!
I've learned "Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always" but I like yours much better.
Thanks, I can't read sheet music in any way or shape, this is a good concise point I wish Josh, or in another video
I Thought what you meant by Money Notes, are the notes needed to play Money by Pink Floyd
Ha, fair.
Most of Money is played in the 'money' zone...
Thanks
So fundamental but so useful. Ive been playing bass for 6 or 7 years and i still gonback to the basics. It never ends.
You really do make learning bass way less overwhelming.
My user name is way cooler than yours 😆
"I'm not making any money now" LOL
Very good beginner lesson.Nowhere seen such good one.
Thank you, glad you dug it.
