It's good. Not great. If they cared so much about speed and horsepower, they could have just made it and EV. Coz once battery goes down in this hybrid, you aren't getting full 680 hp. Why Mercedes why
Also think about the stress on that little 2 liter four with so much HP being squeezed out of it, let alone the weight. I certainly wouldn't want to buy this car once out of warranty.
@@Peanutdenver this has been debated numerous time before, the extra stress on the engine block is mitigated by using better materials. You guys said the same thing about the last-gen A45 (the 381 HP one) yet the engine has been quite reliable. This isn't the early 2000s anymore, the engineering has advanced and we have access to far better materials. I can show you numerous large and undertuned NA V8s which you'd automatically assume are reliable, but in reality they're pieces of garbage because they're poorly built or designed. Small engines being unreliable isn't a rule.
@@xIcarus227 The weight is the main issue and the A45 is a much lighter car compared to the C63. It's really just physics at this point. That 4 cylinder will be substantially stressed which I think is a great engine for the A45 a hot hatch. But over 2100 is a lot of weight to lug around especially after 50k miles they could be issues time will tell. I'm not rooting against the C63 AMG I just wouldn't choose that platform over my M3 or the previous gen C63 which I really liked with the twin turbo V8.
@@Peanutdenver I think I understand what you're trying to say, but it's not exactly a fair comparison. You're saying that for the same amount of acceleration as in the A45, the C63 engine will have to work harder, right? It's true that it'll need more power to move it, but you're forgetting that the engine itself has more power and torque, and has an electric motor to help it. Any engine would work at a higher overall load when put in a heavier vehicle, but this one has help. Don't think there should be a notable difference. I do agree with you on the platform though. If I were in the market for such a car I wouldn't go for a C63 either. To me AMGs are the German muscle cars, to have one without a V8 just defeats most of the point. I'd either go for an M3/M4 or shell out the extra cash for an E63. And like you, I don't have anything against this car, it's just not for me. Neither do I have anything against the inevitable full electrification of these sports cars, but I just prefer enjoying proper ICE cars for as long as they last.
@@xIcarus227 That's a good point on the hybrid system and it's all speculation until we see these cars 5 or 6 years down the road and how they are holding up mechanically. Some Merc's see minimal issues once they get some miles on the clock and some don't. But that's true with a lot of cars.
@@1980arw Yes as long as they keep that naming sceme they should have. It doesn't matter if it's faster in 2 or 3 drags but then loses power lol Would this deliver 100% of the power IF YOU want it, all day? In the first C63 press video, Mat was talking to the new head of AMG. You could tell the guy was a brainwashed corporate zombie who couldn't care less about the cars. What a shame.
If you want a true AMG V8 now is the time to buy one, because I suspect those to become quite desirable in a few years, I also suspect the newer models will depreciate faster than a lead balloon going down due to costs of replacement parts and a bit of a liability, replacement parts costing multiple £10s of thousands will make the newer ones throw away items.
I have been always a massive fan of the C63 and AMG, but this new car kind of brought tears in my eyes and made me ask the totally pointless question: WHY?! 😢 I understand the regulations and all of the other things, appreciate the engineering in the car, but still… I agree with Mat, this is what they had to build. 😥

Driving a fast PHEV or BEV is like microwaving a steak. It prioritises speed over every other aspect of driving and defeats the entire point. Something tells me that this will be the last full AMG C class, and that the w205 will be considered the last proper AMG C class. Why anybody would buy this over a Giulia or M3 is beyond me. As electric & hybrid car performance makes IC performance irrelevant, we won't be looking back at the most powerful IC engines we'll be looking back at the ones that were the most emotive, the 6.2L M156 being one of them along with a slew of other engines. People will miss the Flat 6, V6, V8, V10 & V12 when they're gone.
Mercedes are going in the wrong direction. Hybrid isn’t all that when you have to have 2200kg in a small family sedan. Needs to be much much lighter and maybe a V6. It just ruins handling, braking and acceleration. Plus if the batteries don’t give you the full 670hp all the time then it’s pointless.
As a S205 C63s owner Im sad to see the V8s go, but the performance and engineering that went into this new car is just mind blowing. If someone told me you can go 0-100km/h in 3 seconds with a 2 ton family car when I was a kid, I would have thought that person was insane. On the topic of repair and maintenance cost, due to the higher quality components and fluids used, it will be more expensive to own and run any day of the week no matter the technology in the car. In my eyes the new C63s a Toyota Prius dialed all the way up to 11, only difference will be you get charged a premium depending on the type of car you own. When pushed to the maximum any component will fail eventually, how often you need to repair a car is mainly dependent on how you use it. The first year of owning my C63s I broke a drive shaft, worn out the diff, had to replace brake disks, a couple sets of new(mainly rear) tires while having fun pushing the car to it's limits. The following years my maintenance cost drastically reduced to only paying for the regular service and tire change when needed because I used the car more like a commuter. In my own experience as long as you take care of your car and use it in a normal way, it will not ruin your wallet.
The C63 has always been my favourite small sports sedan and this one is still up there for me. Yes the loss of the V8 is sad but that's the way of the world now. I just really can't decide between the C63 and the C43 which has the same engine without the hybrid shenanigans.❤️
Yeah why couldn't they just put a 6-cylinder engine, and just renamed it as the new C43. I don't think people would be as mad if they didn't use the C63 name.
it looks great! i like the tail lights more then those of my 205. interior is nice altough i would miss the normal buttons... but the sound... big part of the reason why i accept the price of a C63 is the sound (and the feel of the V8), now its even more expensive and both these points are gone... because lets be fair, if only the best drag/track performance is important you look at an alfa, BMW or a class higher at the E63 S.
It is 400kg heavier than the competition and has silly 4 cylinder yet Mercedes fans will still say that they would take it instead of the Audi and BMW 😂😂 This is ridiculous. I guess most people don't grow up.

Miss the V8!
Great review Matt. Now we need to see the drag race between this and the new M3 xDriver.

It just ruins handling, braking and acceleration. Plus if the batteries don’t give you the full 670hp all the time then it’s pointless.
M3 is a much better car, this car has over 100hp more and still can't beat the normal M3.
