  • HOW TO: Bios Update Without CPU for Ryzen. Step by step bios update on Ryzen 5000 Motherboards. Bios Flashback / Q Flash Plus.
    -- Expand Description for More --
    NOTE: Rename the bios file on your USB Thumb Drive (make sure the drive is formatted as FAT32). Each manufacturer uses a different name (double check this with your motherboard manual):
    Gigabyte boards: gigabyte.bin
    MSI boards: msi.rom
    ASRock boards: creative.rom
    ASUS bios files, once extracted, have a bios renamer. Just run the bios renamer program.
    Have a Ryzen 5000 CPU and B550 / X570 Motherboard? Want to know how to update bios without cpu? Do you have a Ryzen 5000 CPU and need a motherboard bios update? If you have a motherboard with bios flashback (Gigabyte calls it Q Flash), then it is easy to do. Update bios with no CPU and no Memory. We go through how to download the bios to a USB thumb drive, rename it properly, set up your motherboard and power supply, and update motherboard bios for Ryzen 5000.
    It only matters whether your motherboard has bios flashback or Q Flash (Gigabyte name for bios flashback). Ryzen 5600X motherboard bios update, Ryzen 5800X motherboard bios update, Ryzen 5900X motherboard bios update, and Ryzen 5950X motherboard bios updates are easy as long as the motherboard has the feature. This works for B550 motherboard bios update and X570 motherboard bios update, as well as some selected B450 bios update and X470 bios update. It will also work for A520 bios update as well, though I would not recommend these boards for the current releases of Ryzen 5000 CPUs.
    Whether you are looking for ASUS motherboard bios flashback, MSI motherboard bios flashback, Gigabyte motherboard bios flashback, or ASRock motherboard bios flashback, we have you covered. Don't forget that it's called Gigabyte motherboard qflash plus for Gigabyte motherboards.

    Hello Jason, you are at the top of my subscribed list and I value your posts. They have helped me greatly in my journey to build a fairly decent pc for flight simming. I wanted to comment about any power issues folks might have in flashing a bios without the cpu. I have a Thermaltake psu and an MSI B550A-Pro motherboard. Turns out the Thermaltake doesn't turn on (fan spinning) unless it is plugged into the ATX-24 motherboard connector. My consternation was that when I did that, the psu still didn't turn on. So after a bit of cursing and settling down I decide to try putting the USB drive into the slot and press the FlashBack button and lo and behold the flash light started flashing, the motherboard led debug light and the psu fan starting turning. Yay!!! While I'm still getting the rig together, I'd thought I'd share my experience for those who might be going or will be going through the same thing. Thanks again for all you do for us. Regards

      Thanks for sharing, I'll be actually building a setup with a psu by Thermaltake and the same motherboard as you. It's a psu that starts fanning at about 40% power (hope it's the right term here, english isn't my first language), so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for sparing me some mild panic xD

I was skeptical it didn’t work because it abruptly turned off after finishing, and I didn’t know how to turn it on with my PSU. When I installed the cpu, GPU, etc it restarted my mobo screen a few times when I powered up. It “repaired” for about 5 minutes and now it works. Kinda weird but no big issues. B550 Auros Pro (rev 1.0). I haven't flashed the BIOS yet because I don't want to take apart my current (i5 7600k) system to do so lol. I'm going to do it all at once as soon as those magical, mythical, ultra rare CPUs are put into existence again. Every time I watch anything hardware related I look at my new mobo and cry a little inside. Cyberpunk uses 90-100% of my 7600k. She's ready to become an emulation machine for the living room haha.
    Thanks for this video and helping better understand the Ryzen from Intel upgrade process!

      You are welcome! Glad I could help! I definitely wouldn't flash it until I was ready to install the CPU. Could be a new bios comes out between now and then and I prefer to flash it as few times as necessary.

    This is the sliced bread of the computer world. Already did this twice yesterday. Once to recover from a bad flash on one motherboard, and once to prepare the way for a new i7 on a Z690 motherboard.

    Literally looking at your mobo vids from a few weeks ago wondering if I made a bad purchase with my MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus. Do you think it'll work fine with a ryzen 7 5800x? Also glad you uploaded this because I need to do it before my cpu comes in lol.

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  3 года назад +1

      The board isn't a bad one. It is just that at the time in October when I shot it (when they were still all selling for MSRP) that there were better offerings for the same price. Prices have been all over the place since that time (that's why I included the spreadsheet to help people when prices shift). That board does have bios flashback, so just use this vide and you can flash the bios without a CPU and get it Ryzen 5000 ready.

      @@PCBuilderChannel okay that's good. I've just been reading that those boards apparently don't run very well with processors with more than 6 cores and didn't want to end up screwing the pooch cause I wanted a cheaper board.

    Little note: Some Asus motherboards require you to install the CPU aswell. Otherwise the motherboard won't turn on and flash the BIOS.
    The Rog Strix B550-I is one example.

      @@PCBuilderChannel Hi! So I tried to qflash my B550 Aorus Master a few moments ago, and the debug Led showed as "00" during qflash. Should I be worried or is it normal for mobos with debug led during bios flash? I haven't touched it until all the lights went off. I have not able to test it yet since i'm still waiting for my last component to arrive.

    I've been planning to get a 5600G CPU and Gigabyte B550 MB combo. I didn't know that the 5600G won't function with the B550 out of the box and I had to update the motherboard first. My research led me to this video. Thanks for the clear tutorial but I'd say that would be the scariest 5 minutes of my life.

    Hi, you may want to clarify that you need Q-Flash plus to do this, not Q-Flash. There is a big difference and had me confused searching the web for an hour trying to figure out if i could do this with my board. YOU NEED Q-FLASH PLUS TO UPDATE WITHOUT A CPU

      additionally, do we have to go through each bios version till we get to the most recent or can we go straight for the most recent like you did? I know f12 and f13 are new since this video so idk if that changes things? I'm pretty new to this and am beyond terrified of bricking my mobo ;-;

    Hello Jason, how are you?
    In my case, I have a motherboard model: B550m Aorus Elite rev 1.3.
    And I just bought a Ryzen 5900x.
    For Ryzen to be recognized by the motherboard (B550m Aorus Elite rev 1.3), I have to update the BIOS. I only have one question.
    Most of the old videos I find here on RUclips.
    All RUclipsrs teach you how to download an old BIOS called the FC version, do you understand my friend? However, on the Gigabyte website, a "Latest" BIOS is now available, called the FDd version. My only question is. Can I download this FDd version now and update the BIOS directly (using the QFlash method)? Or do I have to update the FC version first and then update to the FDd version? If you can help me in this matter, I will be very grateful my friend. Thank you very much in advance for your attention. See you later then, Bye.

    Great video, thanks. I'm a little put off by Gigabyte's own warning on their website ...
    "Warning: Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS.
    How do we know whether our BIOS even needs an update?

    I noticed you didn't even have a CPU installed on the board. Is it the case that you don't need to have a CPU installed for any board from any manufacturer to do the flashback? Any negatives to having the CPU installed?

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  3 года назад +3

      You don’t need to have it if you have the bios flashback button. No negatives. But if you have the CPU installed already and it doesn’t work you have to tear it apart.
