I love how Charlie's "Yes you are" in response to "I'm an excellent driver" is what prompts Raymond to touch his forehead to Charlie's. Every other time he's said "I'm an excellent driver," Charlie has pretty much ignored him. But now Charlie gives him validation, the same kind that their dad probably did on his visits to Wallbrook, and Raymond shows his gratitude and love without words.

Unless the director reacted amazingly to this “off-script” moment and panned in perfectly for a zoom-in close up, there is no way in hell that head touch was improvised.

  • @Prof_Tickles92

When Rain Man rests his head against Charlie's head, that was unscripted. Dustin Hoffman improvised that gesture in the heat of the moment. 😭

@epicfail23 I disagree. Charlie was alone for many years, he had no one. His mother died when he was a baby And his father treated him terribly. He learns he has a brother he didn't know existed. He doesn't know how to react to it but the scene in the bathroom opens his eyes slightly in that he's not alone anymore. And he begins to feel something real for the first time in his life. That's huge character development

People comment about this movie as though it is not a film but a newsreel event; real. The talent that both main actors who lead this heartbreaking tale possess is beyond amazing. Dustin Hoffman seemed to not act; rather, he "became" Ray. He must have studied intensely for this part, but even meeting and observing other savant sufferers cannot allow the viewer to think that Mr. Hoffman did not immerse his entire soul into this film. His portrayal is more than flawless. Dustin "is" Raymond.
Likewise, Tom Cruise played off his part in near perfection, as first the outraged left out son and then to breaking beyond the past to learn to appreciate and most of all love his brother. I cannot imagine another pair of actors who could have been more emotionally in tune with one another and the plot of this film.
Although the movie is somewhat based on a real condition, Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman will be forever after synonymous with the term "Rain Man." A heartbreaking and inspirational event made real by a group of fine actors. Unforgettable.

Charlie and Raymond both show their character development in this brilliant, beautiful scene. Charlie shows a compassion and selflessness that he never had at the beginning of the film; he's learned to love Raymond and put his needs before his own. And there are little moments all throughout the scene that show Raymond's love for Charlie. Initially, Raymond does not like touching anyone or being touched; Vern says he has never touched him in the many years they've known each other. But here, not only does he allow Charlie to sit close to him, rub his back, and kiss his forehead without a single complaint or flinch - indicating that he feels safe with Charlie and trusts him - he INITIATES contact for the first time by touching his head to Charlie's, the only way he's able to say "I love you" to his brother. And at the end, he calls Charlie his main man and spells his name just like he did with Vern, indicating that Charlie has replaced Vern as his main man. Dr. Bruner and Charlie are both right in the end; Raymond is more comfortable and safe living at Wallbrook, but he indeed made a strong, deep connection with Charlie that will last the rest of their lives. What a beautifully written and acted scene in a magnificent film. Bravo.

let this scene be a big lesson for anyone who's unfamilair with Autism: just because we act diffrent than what is concidered to be the 'social norm' doesn't mean we can't feel or understand the concept of emotions. I say we because I'm on the spectrum as well. also some advice for parents who recently found out that their kid suffers from autism watch disney/animated movies with them and find out what their main interest is. that way the can learn how to recognize surton emotions and facial expressions and you can teach them surton things by relaying them towards their interests. if you want some kind of proof that disney movies can have a positive effect on autistic people, watch the documantary "Life, Animated" and you'll see what I mean.

It's so obvious Bruner is wrong about Raymond when he's able to break from his routine of "Main Man V-E-R-N" and say it about Charlie. It's something he decided to do on his own and he didn't panic about it. If the doctor hadn't been hounding them maybe they'd have seen something like this.

Really rare scenes of autistic showing emotions, which is always something really special for relatives or friends.
Hoffman played it really plausible since their thalamus (a part of the brain) is unable to transfer the useful information and halt the unnecessary.
All information getting to them at one time when 'normal' people can focus to the important aspects and don't get overwhelmed.
Their brain needs an alternative, which is the reason why they start rambling or acting when too much happen at the same time, starting to repeat sentences they heard sometimes on which the brain focuses because it thinks in circles due to the lack of serotonin (which can happen to 'normal' people as well in case your thyroid doesn't work properly anymore or the hepatic is incapable of cleaning the blood normally).

for me i have a little brother with mild autism and this movie hits close to home with me I took care of him all my life so far but alot of moments that happen in this movie make me laugh cause i think of us my brother hates it when people like doctors or people like that ask questions he just says the say yea the ending were he Tom say I'm glad I have you for my Brother, Dustin doesn't say anything but in a way says the same thing by putting his head on Toms and it always makes me cry.

@fearguis Dustin Hoffman is an amazing improviser- in Midnight Cowboy, the famous line "Hey, I'm walking here!" was completely improvised.

I can believe that. It makes sense, when you're "in the scene'" you just go. I've done the "head bump" IRL, so it's not a stretch to think that Hoffman did it spontaneously.

The second time Charlie says, "I love having you as my big brother", so much better if Raymond drew one small tear. The whole movie he displays very few emotions such as laughing.....would have been touching if he shed a small tear.
