    What made this scene even more touching is that Dustin Hoffman put his head on Cruise’s head. That’s not in the script.He knew that’s what he would do as a character. Thanks Mr. Hoffman!

    This scene never fails to touch my heart. As the back cover of the film said: “What began as an unsentimental act of rebellion became a journey of self discovery that expanded the narrow confines of Raymond’s world, and allowed Charlie to grow beyond the limits of his own hardened heart.”

    This was a great way to highlight the relative virtues of the Dominion in comparison to the Cardassians. The Dominion could be ruthless and barbaric, but only when they felt they needed to be. Besides their totalitarianism, pragmatism is the Dominion's key feature. It is in their best interests that Bajor and its people are kept healthy, happy, and peaceful, and so they endeavour to make it so. Compare the cruelty and barbarity of the Cardassians, which stemmed from an unbridled sense of cultural and racial superiority, giving them leave to commit every heinous act they could fathom on their helpless 'inferiors'. The Jem'Hadar are creepy monsters bred for combat, but they practice none of the casual brutality of the Cardassians, because it's not in their masters' interest to do so. The Dominion will only do what is necessary, good or evil, to preserve their control. There's no hatred or contempt or pride in their actions.

    • @szahmad2416
      @szahmad2416 5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, and that's a problem, and not just because people might rebel. If for any reason that those people can't control the Dominion finds itself incapable of preserving their control (for example, a regenerative disease in the Founders), the Dominion will think nothing of killing every single being under their care. The Cardassians wouldn't do that. They would be willing to cede some level of autonomy if necessary to preserve their sense of cultural and racial superiority. Also, the Founders have a MUCH greater sense of cultural and racial superiority than the Cardassians. The real difference is that the Founders were much more far-sighted in terms of acting on that cultural and racial superiority. They saw that the beings they subjugated needed a sense of identity and purpose, and gave it to them in a way that served their sense of cultural and racial superiority, like the Jem Hadar.

    Charlie and Raymond both show their character development in this brilliant, beautiful scene. Charlie shows a compassion and selflessness that he never had at the beginning of the film; he's learned to love Raymond and put his needs before his own. And there are little moments all throughout the scene that show Raymond's love for Charlie. Initially, Raymond does not like touching anyone or being touched; Vern says he has never touched him in the many years they've known each other. But here, not only does he allow Charlie to sit close to him, rub his back, and kiss his forehead without a single complaint or flinch - indicating that he feels safe with Charlie and trusts him - he INITIATES contact for the first time by touching his head to Charlie's, the only way he's able to say "I love you" to his brother. And at the end, he calls Charlie his main man and spells his name just like he did with Vern, indicating that Charlie has replaced Vern as his main man. Dr. Bruner and Charlie are both right in the end; Raymond is more comfortable and safe living at Wallbrook, but he indeed made a strong, deep connection with Charlie that will last the rest of their lives. What a beautifully written and acted scene in a magnificent film. Bravo.
