Cartier released the whole line of mysterious watches. A regular person wouldn't even notice anything wrong with them. A watch enthusiast would be like wtf?? But if you're already familiar with Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Mysterious Seconds, you can guess it's all about sapphire 😊

I think Cartier hands down makes the best Skelton watches in the world. They are unique and beautiful, not tacky. But the prices are insane for any skeleton dial. A Santos non skeleton goes for $7k while a skeleton Santos goes for almost $20k. My budget cant

Yea I would not feel comfortable paying so much for a watch. There’s a big difference between being able to buy the watch and being able to justify the expense. There’s no way I could justify paying so much for a watch
@@j0nnyism IMO we don't hear this enough - a lot of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford £20k+ but doesn't mean we should! If you can enjoy a watch for much less money (and let's face it, most people can) then it just isn't worth it (or might not be - it isn't for me).

Weirdly the start of this conversation reminds me of an ancient 4chan thread. In 4Chan Forum Text it just asks 'What do you think?' With an attached jgep that has CP written in huge Microsoft Word Art font. There were about 20 replies.
Each and every response left was complimenting the choice of font, colour, sizing, shading, angle, etc in great detail.
Thank god you guys finally told us (honestly not sarcasm). That watch has driven me nuts because almost nobody for the first few weeks even mentioned that the crown wasnt connected, they were so focused on the rotor being the movement. So seriously, thank you for explaining!
I know of one mechanism where you can just reach through the clock, it's truly floating.
The trick is that the minute hand isn't actually floating, it's connected to a rotating ring. There's a shaft inside this hand that indexes on a stationary ring with a gear, and the shaft worm drives the floating hour hand, thus serving as a reduction gearbox.
It feels like a weird thing to say but Cartier is such an underrated watch maker.
Given the the history, design, quality, craftsmanship and variety that you can walk into a Cartier Boutique TODAY and immediately purchase a De Santos in a tremendous variety of beautiful colours, styles & complications for $7-10k is amazing.
As always loving the humor of this show. The part with the lighter-gun killed me. I sort of guessed it would be sapphire, having seen Konstantin Chaykin's Levitas, and the magic double tourbillion from a recent Frederico talks watches video, both of which work in a similar fashion. "Magic" dial watches are always cool but I guess this is "double cool" because of the rotor-movement-thing

I’m not a fan of the style of Cartier watches. But wow that is totally and utterly incredible, technically. And that actually would make me reassess what I think about the style. In fact it has. Game changer is an overused term. But I think it it appropriate here.

Brilliant guys, made me laugh. It was almost like an expensive house review where nobody noticed the the hungry great white shark in the blood stained pool next to the diving board or the grizzly bear leaving the bathroom while you wait patiently to use it. Clearly this watch was made by the rarely seen mysterious strawberry chewing pixies from Amblin Under Water somewhere near Stoke Underverse **. Just feed them an engineer from time to time and they'll make a dozen or so watches every celestial third moon. A mad timepiece that must be one of the great conversation starters and stoppers with questions like "how did they do that" followed by "I've no idea, mines a pint".
** So far no one can confirm where this place is, it has allegedly been written that it's under the stairs somewhere behind the stuff you were going to get rid of many years ago where the spiders lived long before anyone invented the web.

before I continue @ 8:47 I would like to venture a guess myself before this marvelous duo share their view of this incredible watch. As others have eluded to, this must have to do with sapphire and it being transparent, wrong foot and all that, and something with windows carrying the weight of the floors above, i.e. part of the construction.

the problem with this is that while wearing it you'll see your arm hair instead of a dial, not the most attractive sight, i can imagine

Omega did a La Magique in the 80s. One of my customers bought one in a boot sale for under £100 a few years ago, let's just say it'd worth quite a bit more. I was able to inspect it in detail and it works in a very similar way. Teeth that surround a crystal disk that the hands sit on. The Omega was a quartz however, a good argument not to sniff at all quartz watches.
Quartz ruins the concept. Not at all similar given one is practical and one is purely for looks

damn, i thought for a while and still couldn't think of the solution. but after you explained the saphire discs, i get it. one of the discs are rigidly stuck to the minutes hand. so the crown rotates the disc, which rotates the minute hand as well, without showing any crown stem connection.
The crown doesn’t actually do anything, they probably just put it there to make it look even more confusing
@@Tubleros the crown does set the time and thats about it. Just imagine a round sapphire disk with a track around it with gear teeth, acting like a giant gear with transparent middle part. Then the crown stem has gears which connects to 2 of those disks to help you set the time.

The rotor in French is called the “masse oscillante” so the “masse mystérieuse” refer to “mysterious rotor”
As a mechanical engineering student i'm very happy that i guessed both mechanisms behind this. Also for me it did absolutely not ruin the fun because I got to marvel at the absolute expertise they are pulled off with

1: Rotating glass as mounting for the hands.
2: A fixed gear in the middle that acts as an orientation for the rotating movement which allows it to move freely without impacting the hand's position.

It took me about 30 seconds to figure out how it worked before you showed the break down exploded view. I said awwww, that’s cool. Then 20 seconds later my head exploded when I realized I kinda did understand it, and was even more impressed because this silly jewelry shoppe did it, but it’s even more German then required, and they’re Swiss!!!

I’m usually not a fan of open heart, or skeleton watches but this is pretty cool.
As a mechanical engineer, I would guess a clever combination of small clutches, shims, and a very small gear train makes this possible. The weight of such a rotor movement would require making sure the weight of that movement/rotor combo doesn’t load the gears driving the hands. Fascinating design! Would love a proper schematic of this.

Spot on about people thinking Cartier isn't a watch brand. I have always been on the fence about that even though Santos is one of my favorite watches. On one hand it has at least 2 of the most iconic watch models ever but on the other hand, is not not wrong to say it's more of a jewelry brand...... But this.... this settles it. This pushes them all the way into the watch brand territory.
I absolutely hate that argument about Cartier being a jewelry brand, not a watch brand. If JLC did exactly what Cartier did, everyone world be raving about how innovative and superior horologically JLC is. Cartier does it and they get discounted as just a jewelry brand.
Cartier has more pedigree in watchmaking than Rolex to be honest. First watchmaker to create a square pilot's watch worn on the wrist, first watchmaker to offer a square watch; first watchmaker to make a square movement... They still keep the innovations rolling too. Like using photovoltaic cells in their Tank models... To me, they were a watchmaker first, but they branched out and became very well-known for their jewelry too due to their overall excellence. Tell me a watch brand or jeweller who can brag about that?
@@shushanthswinderballs1122 I wouldn't say Cartier isn't a watch brand at all, but I used to say they are more of jewelry brand than a watch brand and I thought that was fair. 2 iconic models in Santos and Tank, typical auto movement or quartz, nothing groundbreaking. Bonus points for skeleton models but still. I found that assessment to be completely fair, but this new model should get them recognized more as a watchmaker. I don't think there's bias in that.
@@tikiecue5677 yeah it's always nice to be first about something but you have to keep up the work to get consistently recognized, right? In Cartier's case, their success in jewelry definitely overshadowed their watches, and there was nothing strong enough to rave about for like 100 years. You can perhaps tell I'm not one to place Rolex too high in a tier list, but prior to this particular news, I do think Rolex's practicality gives the brand an edge against Cartier. You will need brands like Zenith and Glashutte Original to win against Rolex.
Cartier has more horological cache and bona fides than almost any watchmaker aside from Breguet, Blancpain and of course the legendary Gallet. Sure they are not as old as the Trinity, nor most other great elite makers, at least not in their watchmaking.... though worth noting they are older than Rolex, many of the great German makers, and even a year older than Omega. However, few ever dared do what Cartier has done, and does still.
Even before the wristwatches, before the Santos, which is Day 0 of men's wristwatches, and the mass production of thereof for the civilian market, they were doing crazy things with their pocketwatches. People do not even know Cartier MADE pocketwatches for the most part, but they DID. Square ones, thin ones, complicated ones. Everyone seems to forget, or does not even KNOW that Loius-Fracois Cartier, founder, was, by trade, a MASTER WATCHMAKER.
If Cartier is NOT a watchmaker, then Hamilton are not, Bulova are not, even Rolex are not, hell even Omega are not. The history, and cultural significance of the wristwatch, would not be what it is today, if not for two names, who had the vision to see, and risk, transforming the image and ideas surrounding the wristwatch in the era of pocket pieces.
One was Hans Wilsdorf, with his company Wilsdorf and Davis, known to the world today, of course, as ROLEX, and the other? LOUIS CARTIER, of the Maison of the same name!
How anyone who knows anything about horology at ALL, could ever, under ANY circumstances, even be TEMPTED to think Cartier is not a legitimate Watchmaker, BEGGARS BELIEF. They are one of the GREATEST Watchmakers of ALL TIME. Seriously.

Seems like there are probably radial, or orbital and planetary gears working behind the numerals plates, which the clear sapphire crystal disc's are attached

I totally get how the movement remains free spinning while the hands remain 'static'... What boggles my mind is how is the crown is connected so that one can set the time...
The hands are on sapphire disks, with gear teeth along their circumferences, which the crown can easily connect to.
So how does the crown work to set the time? I am confused!

The Orient flight looks like one of their better watches. At least there are no hollow end links with straps. I would go for an automatic. I’m not sure about the Victorinox. I think you could get more for your money. Tissot prx?
I have a Victorinox and since it’s quartz chrono, I rarely wear it. Maybe it’s time to sell…
I'd say... all the movement spins around a fixed gear, that gives charge to the coil and the only point of contact with the case. On the bottom sapphire I guess? The motion of hands is regulated by some sort of clutch wheel, separating the spinnig of the movement from the minute and hour wheel. Oh, assuming that the central harbor is made in unobtanium to bear all the weight and stress of a spinnig movement... I'd like to give it to a child. One like the dentist nephew in "Finding Nemo" and see how long does it take to hear an expensive rattle...
That is the first time that a product's name sound better in french than in english. "Masse mystérieuse" would translate as "mysterious weight" like a mysterious oscillating weight or mysterious rotor. The watch is very beautiful, very well done, very impressive. Nonetheless, I would not wear it to see my arm's hairs through the watch, it would be the "Poils mystérieux" xD
I once took my girlfriend to a high end local jeweler to buy her a ruby necklace. The jeweler was very intrigued by the bracelet my girlfriend was wearing. When we left I asked her about it, and she said it was a family Cartier piece of antique jewelry from this time period.

Maybe the hands are connected to the internal glass, also this internal glass has "thooth" on the outside, tooth that are hidden (so it's an hidden glass transparent gear)
I assume the crown is connectet to a second layer of saphire plate at the bottom which turns around when you spin the crown. (as seen in 7:24 ) There is a layer which has a gear all around it. this has a second Layer attached to it. Btw I don't know if this is true. I just assume it
There's only one picture I could find of this piece on wrist, and it looks decidedly weird: Pallid skin pressed up against that much window of sapphire caseback.

It would really be an "Impossible" watch if the center dial hovered above the movement. As it is now, I would call it the "Novel" watch.
