The Cartier Crash, The Last Word In High-Impact Horology | A Week On The Wrist

- Sometimes it's fairly easy to predict how you'll react to a watch before you wear it - after all, a dive watch is a dive watch is a dive watch, at least up to a point. The Crash, however, turned out to defy expectations, at least for me. Chances are that unless you have had a chance to actually wear a Crash before, you haven't worn anything even remotely like it. The watch looks in photographs as if it will be a somewhat quirky watch to wear but not necessarily a charismatic one. However, over a period of longer exposure, I found out that there is quite a bit about the Crash that is easy to miss at first (or second, or third) glance.

Now I'm not sure if I would actually wear one on a daily basis, but from aesthetics point of view - at least for my taste - this watch is such a devastatingly, gorgeous mix of weirdness, class and elegance. It's just so seriously playful, or playfully serious. It's the stuff of legends.
"Recently, the book The Cartiers by Francesca Cartier Brickell dispelled the common origin story of the Cartier Crash: it was never the result of a car crash melting a Cartier Baignoire Allongée, but instead the product of a collaboration between Jean-Jacques Cartier (who ran the Cartier London branch from the 1940s through the 1970s) and designer Rupert Emmerson. Sometimes, a great design is a great design - it doesn’t need some apocryphal story to raise its stature. Such is the case with the Cartier Crash. First introduced by Cartier London in 1967, the Crash has been produced in fits and starts on an extremely limited basis ever since."
There is actually one watch you could compare the crash to, which is the "Softwatch Exaequo Salvador Dali".
Can't mention other competitive products in an ad, now can we?
@@ensampojken I don't think this is an ad. At least it's not labelled as one.
Jack always presents a balanced and proportioned review, well done Dink!!
A truely unique design icon! The epitome of all that’s good about Cartier
The ambition with this watch was and is somewhat crazy - to make it actually happen is otherworldly - hands down a stunner and imo clearly deserves its fame and glory! Notorious!
Hamilton launched a long series of dramatic asymmetric watches 10 years before the Cartier Crash. Look at the Altair if you want to see avant garde styling pre-dating the Crash.
Very interesting piece for sure! I was waiting for you to flip it over and show us the case back and how the strap is attached!!
My favorite week on the wrist!!
My most favourite watch of all time.
stunning. need it in my collection
Thanks for the Video: Cartier is History, Elegance and Style - somehow a counterbalance to the hefty Rolex-World - I love both - Greetings from Germany
Beautiful watch. Just looks so classy
This watch is not for me personally. But like other watch models I am glad it was made. It definitely interesting to look at and I would really enjoy the chance to see one in person one day.
Great video guys 👏
Jack’s paintings getting better
Watching hodinkee do art brut of a cartier watch is so hilariously low brow with such an expensive piece.
Closest thing to the spirit of the Crash that comes to mind is the Moser Swiss Alp watch.
I mean I like Brandon and all but Jack doing a week on a wrist with watches of this caliber is just the right call
Any particular reason why they don't use the watchmaker's roman numeral 4 on the dial?
the only thing i can think of that is vaguely similar, but also not even close, is something like the hamilton ventura
No, that's more Art Deco
Jack at the end: "My art has been commended as being strongly vaginal." 😂 Great review 👍🏼
Salvador Dali softwatch is a great alternative
In the crash Cartier chose the roman numeral IV instead of the usual way Cartier decided to display it… IIII
The only thing that could possibly break Crash auction records is a JF original Crash print oil on canvas
I like it :)
The technical sheet was missing at the end of the video
Jack's the man.
Amazing watch but is it just me or the the leather strap missing the buckle end and the holes?😂
I’d certainly wear one with pride even though telling time on it would take a bit more concentration than normal. Probably would never be able to afford one though.
Exeaquo Softwatch probably?
This is definitely Salvador Dali inspired
Great video, but wish you would have exposed some knowledge on the movement, which is fascinating in its own right...
Does John Mayer own one? (Or two?)
Nothing else like it? My good man, are you forgetting the 90's Timex Winnie the Pooh watch? The Gold-tone case in the shape of Pooh's head bears a striking resemblance..
Pun intended.
I called Hodinkee today to buy a $7K watch and they hung up on me because I would not leave a message and wait for a "remote" person to call me back.
This video makes me want a Crash even more!!
Funny how nobody ever shows the back of the crash, is it that ugly?
Anyone knows the thickness of the dial? Are all versions by Cartier the same?
Never was Salvador Dali painting
Am I the only one distracted by the jacket sleeve stain?
🙂
Not this time, Jack. Not this time. Not this time. No. No no no no no no no no no! No! No no no no no no no no no no no Not this time, Jack. Not this time. Not this time. No. No no no no no no no no no! No! No no no no no no no no no no no no no! No! Not this time! No way! No way, no way, no way!

Make one for 5 grand though, Cartier.
Mah better to ditch the super gimmicks of painting and it should have more shots of the crash in the wild with different outfits outside and also a bit on the movement…not a nice video and for me not what week on a wrist should be about imo
"impossible to mimic". It's already copied on Aliexpress for under $30 haha
Stylist did a good job in that Tyler the Creator shot you show, probably would look good with some streetwear. I don't think you can make it work with anything formal, despite its elegance.
Nonsense. Have some style!
Sorry Jack but that's just awful. No wonder they call it the Crash. 🤣 🤣 🤣
Not my cup of tea...
Not my idea of a good watch.
A $2 watch from the gas station would be more appealing I fear. 🇦🇺
@Addicted to Tools thanks for shortlisting me.
I watch all your videos and love that you share your knowledge and passion
These are very feminine, especially comparing your wrist shots to that Paul Neman photo. Its like night and day.
Nope. Not for me. I thought I would like it but do not. Maybe on a woman's wrist?
nah bro, sorry but as much as I love the tank for instance, this one is a pretentious mess.
shamless. just talking about what you want and not what we want. speaking of rectangular, solar cartier tank VS solar seiko tank
What's shamless
Speak for yourself, I actually enjoy watching these videos that involve extremely rare watches. There are already a ton of watch channels comparing cheaper alternatives.
Hideous. Absolutely hideous. Cartier has proven once again that people will be fooled into thinking something is beautiful just because it comes from a particular brand. If Fossil or Invicta had come out with this first, the jokes would be coming in HARD.
Do yourself a favor and read The Sense of Beauty by George Santayana, perhaps you will look at it differently, or read about Wabi-Sabi influence from Japan...
