  • After a long wait it's finally there: the story of the most debated and discussed watch of last months, the Exaequo Softwatch!
Born from the mind of Philippe Muller, the artworks of Salvador Dalì and rediscovered by IamCasa almost two years ago, the Softwatch embodies almost all the characteristics of the perfect affordable watch of 2000s: distinguished, reliable, mysterious and with a great story to tell.
A watch produced in a multitude of variants and colors, with a perfectly matching strap and buckle. A continuous reminder to the link between watchmaking and art, similar in some ways to the Cartier Crash, but more wearable, more ergonomic and way more affordable.
Fetching nowadays figures below the 3.000€, the Exaequo Softwatch is the definition of conversation starter, a must have for everyone not afraid of quartz and gold plating.
IamCasa, Andrea Casalegno is proud to present you the first video on the internet about the story of the Softwatch.
More to come, stay tuned and enjoy the video!!!
Credits to @timebyraf for some amazing pics!
And credits to the Gala/Salvador Dalì Foundation and some unknown authors for the other pics.

Great video! I stumbled across one that appears brand new buried in an unrelated lot I picked up at an auction a couple days ago.
Funny story.... I took it to a local watch repair shop to get the battery replaced which I was concerned about due to it being the "no screw" model. Well small world... it turned out the owner played a part in the original design. How crazy is that??

I am desperate for some expert information please! I bought a 1999 (I think) Softwatch by Demart the company that held Dali's intellectual rights at that time. It carries the Dali signature on the dial and the word Softwatch as you describe. It has the Demart trademark and specific serial number on the back. It has its original strap in black edged in blue, with the original wavy buckle. I would love to know how this design (exactly as you describe the Exaequo design) fits in with the history of the Softwatch. As far as I can tell, Demart had the rights to the trademark at the time Exaequo was producing the same thing. Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

@@iamcasaAndreaCasalegno Further to your kind offer of help, here are the details you requested of the watch I am seeking details about. Thank you so much for your consideration and time, and hope, at the least, you will find it interesting. I have copied with pictures to your email. I was not sure how to add the pics to this reply. Do let me know what you think, and thanks again, Angela
I bought this watch at an auction and was keen to research the trademark on the back. I therefore first watched your video for the background information.
As I researched it I found its place in the history of Dali and the watch fascinating … but now I need the experts! This is my online research and I have attached pictures. The shiny surface made it difficult to photograph accurately but hope they help. It has a silver case with gold around the dial. The strap is dark blue with an edging in a brighter blue. The buckle is also silver. On the dial is the word Softwatch so presume that is part of the trademark.
The trademark on the back is very clear and it is that of Demart.
This website was helpful on this issue:
      www.trademarkelite.com/uk/trademark/trademark-detail/UK00001376487/DEMART-D-SALVADOR-DALI
      It basically confirms:
DEMART D SALVADOR DALI United Kingdom Trademark Information
      By FUNDACIÓN GALA-SALVADOR DALI
The DEMART D SALVADOR DALI trademark was assigned an Application Number #UK00001376487 by the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). Trademark Application Number is a Unique ID to identify the DEMART D SALVADOR DALI mark in UKIPO.
      ---------
On this website is a history of the wrangle over the rights and wondered if this was why Exaequo could no longer use the Softwatch and Dali logo. The dates seem to tally.
      artquest.org.uk/artlaw-article/the-dali-wrangle-2/
Dit says: Dali established the Foundation in 1982 in order to manage his museum at Figueres, but also to protect and promote his work. The Demart company was created in 1985 and Dali then signed over to it all of his intellectual property rights until 2004. The beneficiaries of Demart’s business profits would be Dali (until his death) and the Foundation. Dali’s concept was simple:
Demart would generate income to support the Foundation. However, after Dali’s death in 1989, difficulties arose when Demart’s operating costs prevented sufficient profit from copyright royalties being paid to the Foundation. In 1994 the Foundation tried to become the administrator of Demart’s intellectual property rights, against the latter’s wishes. In 1995 the Spanish Government was persuaded by the Foundation to enact legislation transferring the administration of Demart’s rights to the Foundation, and in 1997 the Spanish High Court (and in 1999 the Spanish Supreme Court) confirmed the lawfulness of this action. The Spanish King, Juan Carlos, is Honorary President of the Foundation and is publicly vocal in his support of this move. Later in 1999 Demart issued court proceedings in Spain, claiming that the Spanish Government’s transfer of the rights was unlawful. At the time of writing, the case has yet to be decided.
The current situation therefore appears to be that both Demart and the Foundation are claiming the exclusive right to administer Dali’s intellectual property rights throughout the world. This makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for legitimate would-be users of Dali’s images to negotiate licensing deals to merchandise them.
      --------------------------------
This website shows the exact trademark as on my watch. It says it was cancelled in 2004, I assume the serial number on mine is the first four characters indicate 2002.
