Men during the pocket watch era "carried" their watches - they didn't "wear" them. I'm a Smith's owner, love it, and am happy to beat their drum on the Everest topic! I'll have to go with Tom on this one because most, if not all, of his propositions are literally affordable options (or at least affordable for a much wider range of buyers), while the likes of Tudor, Longines etc. are already standard luxury or entry-level luxury choices. Besides, the Tissot PRX 35mm and Hamilton Khaki are like the exact (but cheaper) copies of their luxury counterparts LOL And just a bit of personal opinion, not responding to any particular models mentioned in the video, but I've been browsing through some affordable or high price-performance ratio brands, and I would whole heartedly endorse Mido and Certina. I own two Mido watches now and dare I say they have one of the best, if not the best, finishing, bracelet and functions for the four-digit or something USD price level. I haven't gotten my hand on any Certina for now (shame that they do not have authorized dealers in the USA), but judging from the website product page I'd say they are a bit below Mido in terms of design and finishing, but still packed a lot of value. I will try to get a Certina and see if it lives up to my expectations.

That Hamilton Pilot Pioneer was out long before Watches and Wonders. I'll point out that Hamilton has been in business since 1892, in the heyday of railroad watches. They supplied the navy and military during the war, they came up with some of the first electric watches, were involved in the first mechanical automatic chronograph development, and they sparked a revolution (albeit shorlived) with the Pulsar LED watch. My conservative guess is that they did not, in fact, copy Patek here. :)

I would also add the Victorinox Inox Mechanical as a cheaper alternative to the Girard Perregaux Laureato 42mm. A reliable automatic movement [a Selita SW200-2 in the case (excuse the pun) of the Victorinox]? Check, a hexagonal bezel that is close enough to the octagonal GP's bezel that you'd miss the difference if you weren't looking closely? Check, A waffle design dial? Check. All for a 1/20th of the cost of the GP - I have one as a daily alternative to my Tudor North Flag and it's just as accurate as the Tudor - the Victorinox is 3 to 4 seconds fast per day (which is easier to adjust, just stop the second hand for the required amount of time to reset the time) compared to the Tudor which is 3 to 4 seconds slow per day which is more of a faff to reset the time (stop the second hand and advance the time before starting again)

Overall, Tom wins this as he has most watches that fits the bill. My thoughts on the watch choices and what I think are the closer/better budget alternatives:
    * Alternative to Rolex GMT Master LHD - Baltic Aquascaphe GMT Green (Tom wins)
    * Alternative to VC Historiques 222 - Tissot PRX80 35mm Gold PVD (Tom wins)
    * Alternative to Grand Seiko Kodo - Frederique Constant Slimline Monolithic Manufacture (Mr. Hands wins)
    * Alternative to Tudor Black Bay Pro - Neither wins. It should be the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT Black (£970).
    * Alternative to PP Calatrava 5226G - Tom was close with his choice of Hamilton Aviation Pilot Pioneer. The closer alternative is the Seiko Prospex (Alpinist) SPB159J1 (£600). It has the black mottled dial, the cathedral hands, the date at 3'o'clock, and the 38mm size but only the hour numbers are fewer (even numbers only) and in a different orientation.

Great starter watches to get some feel of their luxury alternatives. Or just great watches for people who are not so deep into watches like us. Personally these great alternative affordable options will set me back from getting my higher end luxury grails. I need to maintain for a vintage Submariner, A Lange 1815 or Day Date Rolex.

What a wonderful show/program idea and It is a draw! I can't either find any substitute for Tudor BB pro, it is so hard and one might even argue for the Seiko Sharp edge GMT as a contender there. Longines Spirit to battle the Patek problem, would be my solution. And Spirit Zulu Time would work as an option to BB Pro!

For the Black Bay Pro I would suggest the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT. Clearly inspired by the Explorer 2 without being an homage, especially the blue variant. Really good value and a nice bracelet with on the fly adjust.

Doubt you’ll see this comment at such a late date but I really enjoy this concept. It’s a quirky little game I’d like to see more of please. I personally find value substituting a mistake unless you actually like the compromise watch better, but that is rarely the case. As a game, however, it is quite fun.

What are the options for someone who loves a watch that they could never afford; it not substitute?

    • @thenutcracker2921
      @thenutcracker2921 Год назад

@@bradleyburton4762 Find a unique watch you love and can afford. There is virtually no way you only like 1 watch and the choices available at all price ranges is staggering. If you settle for a copy it will almost never live up to the original in your mind and soon you’ll realize it didn’t actually scratch that itch. Buying a watch with its own unique identity is extremely satisfying and regret is only an option if you fall out of favor with its look/style.
Car analogy time: You cannot afford a Ferrari but want one. Do you settle for a look-alike kit car or purchase a Lotus? The Lotus is still somewhat exotic, aggressively super car styled, is mid engine, European, unique, and very fast around corners. All at a fraction of the cost. The kit car just makes you look and feel like a poser. A Submariner copy/“homage” does exactly the same thing. FTR, I’m not talking about fakes with original badging. You should already know why that’s a terrible idea.

I do not know what prices you are all are looking at, but the Baltic Aquascaphe GMT Green alone is going for 920 pounds or $1140's. I know that is not a lot for people into high end watches, but that isn't what I would call a "bargain alternative". I am just a humble middle class American, trying to pay his electric bills every month.

The best modern equivalent of an early explorer is the Addiesdive AD2123-2. It is a beautiful watch with a perfectly sized case and has the benefit of a mecaquartz movent for stunning accuracy and robustness. All for £70 !
If you insist on having the inaccuracy of an auto movement then the AD2112 which also gives you the later applied indices.
Addiesdive and Watch Dives can also offer various Tudor BB homages, again with quartz movements.
