Why the Cartier Pasha is Unpopular

  • The Cartier Pasha deserves so much more LOVE THAN IT RECEIVES! It has the same specifications as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual but gets a lot less love. It's the most unique go anywhere do anything watch that money can buy. I know, the design is...... Specific and a bit opulent; but when it comes to specifications you really can't argue with it. If you want a go anywhere do anything watch with a bit of personality..... I mean, it's gotta be the Cartier Pasha!
Gerald Genta design. Awesome heritage. I'm about it!

Dear Britt, truly enjoy your channel and the post about the Pasha is fantastic. I worked for Cartier in 1988, three years after the pasha was introduced. I also got to see the Santos Galbee and Panthere for ladies sell quite a bit, especially in the steel, and gold but the Pasha was special very special. Coming from a high end jewelry designer and the uniqueness with storied history. It had a royalty vibe to it. And yes GRID all day. The only watch with a old school diving helmet feel to it.
Quite a bit of celebrities came through and purchased these amazing watches. One person will always stand out in my mind was Elton John. He was on tour in Miami, so as he entered the store, he was very personable and brought his entourage. Very casual, he had the denim jacket with Mickey Mouse on the back custom designed with all the crystals, I don’t know if you remember that from back in the day. As it’s customary, the store is secured to allow privacy for the celebrity and his entourage the interesting part is that he bought a watch for each member of his entourage. Super amazing to see. Very personable.
Truly enjoyed your post. Much love for Pashas. They also had the amazing Pasha cologne.😊

When I was in film school at PSU during the early 90’s, I had an instructor who said he worked on the set of Disney’s “Totally Minnie” video. Elton John was in it, I guess. The director and a couple select members of the crew had those Minnie Mouse jackets. Elton saw them and said he would not perform his part unless he got one of those jackets.
They were custom made and they weren’t for sale. So someone from the crew had to give their jacket to Elton so he would do his job.

Thanks Britt, for posting this review. Did you know the story that Cartier came up with when the watch was introduced? It was claimed that the Pasha of Marakesh wanted a “waterproof” watch for his water sport activities. What he (they) really meant was that he wanted such a watch for bathing with his “hareem!” Hence, it became known as the “bathtub diver” for collectors. All good watches have a story and I like it! However, when Gerald Genta passed away, his widow sold some sketches at auction that look surprisingly similar to the Pasha. So it IS A GERALD GENTA watch. Collectible watches always have a good story. True or not!

I bought the 35mm in 2022 with the MC 1847 in-house movement. It lives on my wrist every day...the sheer pleasure I get every morning putting on my Pasha is worth every penny. I have yet to see another person wearing one. I see Rolexes (real and fake) everywhere. It looks unique and is a Genta design...I couldn't ask for more. Thank you for taking the time to showcase this lovely, underrated timepiece.

Hahaha, that wee crown is perfect split between hilarious and adorable. But it is a cool looking watch, very unique, maybe a bit pretentious design, but since it's Cartier it is absolutely fine. The whole crown situation isn't my favourite. The date-window is also a bold choice, but this whole is a bold design.
This is the type of watch I would use if I were going to a musem or a classic play. But toiling about in the perpetual hamster-wheel of doom that is working and such, it wouldn't get much wrist time, even if it was 37mm. But to be so bold as to quote John Mayer, "it reminds me of a lifestyle I certainly don't have, but it is sure fun to think about."
Actually, sometimes I even feel that about my own watches. Sometimes I feel I could get by with a water damaged Swatch from 1997 where the hands are just rolling around freely at the bottom of the dial, and with mismatched strap pieces salvaged from other watches. Not even like ironic, like I actually tried to match up my one good piece of worn-to-bits brown fauxligator with a almost same brown rubber strap. I think that says a lot about how my life is going sometimes. 😅😞😬

However, I will say that if you have a magnifier, it should only be used on a 3 o'clock date window. The magnifier on the Pasha throws it off to me. So on this watch, I agree with you. Finally, some love for the Pasha. The Pasha of Marrakesh's story aside, I feel there's something very romantic about it. I'm immediately transported to another time and place every time I see a Pasha. The chronograph version especially seem like it would fit right at home on Captain Nemo's Nautilus in Jules Verne's 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. I'd argue the Pasha has an even bigger escapist quality than the JLC Reverso because it doesn't really look like anything else. It doesn't even look like a stereotypical Genta design that we associate with him. I'm waffling a bit, but I'm just very happy to see some spotlight on the Pasha. Thank you so much for filming this.

I’ve worn a pasha as my daily for the past 10 years. Never seen another person wear it in the wild; love how unique is it.
Small crown has never bothered me; given the crown guard design it must be small, and it’s not been an issue for me to set the time.
The worst part about the watch is actually the magnifying glass. A real distraction from the elegance of this watch.

You were asking about the movement and i've had the Pasha on my radar for a while so i think i can help! Since the model you had is a Pasha C, the movement is an ETA 2829-a2 with a modified date wheel.

Health issues and work - sounds like my life just sucks! But it really does not and I am proud to say I do own a Pasha and really enjoy it. It's refined but it really is a sports watch! If it was a car it would be like a Bentley Continental which is all class but also serious performance! It's the gentleman adventurer and I just love that about it! It's different enough to definitely stand out, it's classy enough to wear to more formal events, has the specs to go through more rugged or casual stuff, it's just amazing! I love it! "The 4-30 date window makes it extra-interesting". No no - the date window and the ridiculous cyclops make it extra crap. It ruins what is a beautiful watch face. That plus the mystifying crown make it a thumb's down from me.

Honestly, I like it and that "ugly duck" reputation helps you get it at a heavy discount on the GM. Nice Vid!

Have you looked into the Cartier Drive de Cartier? Especially the Moonphase. A bit large for some, but distinctive and gorgeous! Worth a look, even if it’s a discontinued model. ⌚️😎☕️

It has the potential to be a Top Selling Watch , however that stupid date window at 4 thirty is something that would have me wanting to throw it off the bridge, it makes it look beyond awful. What were they thinking ? It's akin to having a Garbage collector as a chaufeur for your Roll's Royce drive you around in it after he finished his shift collecting garbage and hadn't showered first.....lolol Moving on, I just looked at a watch I have never heard of before > that being the > parmigiani fleurier. The one I looked at was rrp of $44,000 USD . A bit too exy for me.(expensive) Anyhow have a great day folks.

Watching this vid grinning ear to ear while wearing my Cartier Pasha Seatimer! I loved this watch ever since I was in my undergrad in my 20s and was finally able to get one recently to celebrate my 38th birthday. It’s so underrated and classy and striking to people when they’re not able to pinpoint exactly what watch it is when they’re staring at my wrist.

For me the case and dial are nice but the bracelet is a touch chunky. It takes away from some of the elegance of the piece. Love the size, agree it’s a great unisex watch. Was this available on a strap? I feel like it was.

  • @tombombadil1646

The date position doesn't really matter for the movement. Cartier just has to print the numerals in a different orientation. And i guess they don't take a stock date disk with some random font anyway.

I appreciate that you show us something different every now and then. However, this watch isn't my cup of tea. I do like 4:30 date windows, for example on some Seiko models.
