- Where's Wallis and what has been happening? Some things have come up and I've been out of touch with all of you other than the odd social media post, so I've put together a quick #update on what's been going on. Thanks to all of you for being so understanding and supportive over the last few weeks.
I am in Nova Scotia helping while my mom is in the hospital, and it's turned into a longer stay than anticipated. I got a health issue solved while I was out here so that's wonderful news. Can't wait to get back in a tent or hammock. Cheers!

Steve, I lost my mom in april 2022. Nothing is more important than family. Even when you have more than 1 million subscribers. Be there for your mom and don't worry about us. Great to see you, Steve. It's made my day. I looked after my dear Mother for months at a time for several years and she lived at the other side of the World. It's difficult to do, but I am glad I did it. Good for you for doing it, too.

Hope you find a family doc soon Steve. Not enough of them out there because a 95% grade 12 average is required to pursue it to uni. Lots of foreign grad right now & all they need is pass a biology based exam - I bet not of them will get a 95% average if they were sent back to grade 12. Lol the media is asleep.

Hey everyone, sorry I’ve been absent. It has been a tough month and sadly my mom passed away a couple days ago. I will be back of course. Thank you everyone for your support and understanding.

Permethrin is AWESOME! I live in tick country and never go in the woods with untreated clothes, and have not had a tick on me in years, since I started treating my clothes with it. I even use it on my sleeping bag, tent, hat, boots - everything. I've found it also helps with mosquitoes. Prayers for your family, hang in there, take all the time you need.

Btw our ticks can transmit Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis in humans, which may be the one contestant we have that beats its Australian counterpart in "Animals That Make You Want To Be a Rock".
Stay strong Steve, and please keep in mind that you don't have to win a beauty contest. Pants stuffed in socks is a-ok when ticks are around.
My Lyme was diagnosed when I Woke with Bell’s Palsy so there are many avenues it can take. Doing very well, don’t panic if you get sick. And as has been said before we will be here whenever you get back!
Hey Steve. Just like the Candian wildfires, my home of Maui, Hawaii recently had a devastating wildfire where so far 106 have been confirmed dead. And they aren't even done searching the area. It could end up being over 500 people. We lost our historic town of Lahaina. And you and your videos are a bright spot. I've been rewatching all your stealth camp videos between me shedding tears.

Hope Mum is improving. Great to hear your headaches are getting better. Sinus pain is yuck but the relief from the pressure is heavenly. I sometimes do a head dive into the bay just to get salt water into my nose...messy and cold but oooh the relief as my nose cascades ! Thanks for the update .. the vlog family are worry warts but its 'cause we love you. 😂

We lived in Hebron Nova Scotia in 1970-71. The ticks were the worst I ever saw. The whole yard would crawl away when I went out the door. Lyme disease wasn't a problem then, (at least that we knew about). Duct tape works well to seal the seams in your clothing. Avoid pushing through brush. NEVER sit or lie on the ground! Make sure your tent is tight or use a hammock. A friend wanted me to take him out to the center of the Province to see the gold mines. I warned him, but we got separated after awhile and when we returned he was stretched out on the ground. All the way home his wife was trying to pick ticks off him and they were running all over the car and getting on us! Today Permethrin is available and seems to work well, but be sure to read and follow the directions - you shouldn't wear the treated clothing for at least four hours after spraying it (Nova Scotia is always damp), so it is better to do it the day before and let it dry overnight.
Steve's looking quite healthy here. Bright eyed and bushy tailed. Like a greyhound ready to blast out the gates when the time comes and we'll all be patiently waiting.

You’ll always be welcomed in Nova Scotia Steve. Shouldn’t have a problem with stealth camping. Also, just make sure you pull the tick off within 24 hours, you should be fine. And if you do get a tick and a bullseye forms go to a doctor for some antibiotic. Good luck and take care Steve!

Steve, long time canoe camper and Appalachian Trail hiker here. Order permethrin and treat your quick dry clothing and tent/hammock. Apply deet around shoes/socks & hat. You will have minimal if any issues. Happy camping!
Hi Steve. I’m a volunteer with search and rescue in NS and learned that you basically have 24 hours after a tick attaches itself to you before it will pass along lime disease to you, so just look yourself over after each trip. Also Atlanticks is a great repellant to avoid them in general.
Don't feel bad Steve about not being in touch with us. We understand that your mom needs you to be there. She is the most important person in your life right now and she deserves all of your care and attention.

As a Nova Scotian, it's an honor to have you here. If you get a chance, try some Propeller Galaxy for a step two. But honestly, the wood tics are annoying, but the deer ones are the dangerous ones.
Watch out for the Schooner step two's!
How can you tell them apart? Do the wood ticks not carry Lyme disease as well? I don't understand.
@TheSubzeto oh yeah, stay away from the Schooner. Many a bad night had Schooner attached to it
@argusfleibeit1165 apparently wood ticks don't......... apparently. According to a pharmacist, I spoke to when I was bitten. Wood ticks, I believe, are bigger than deer tics and have brown legs
Some tick info: If you happen to see this, Steve . . . I live close by in Maine and Lyme has been a problem here for a while as well. Just wanted to let you know that Deer Ticks (the ones that carry Lyme) have to be attached to you for 2 full days for them to transmit the disease, so as long as you're careful and check yourself very well in the shower, you'll be just fine. Deer Ticks are very small so look very carefully and don't miss spots like the belly button, behind the ears, private areas, etc.; they like nooks and crannies. Stay safe, my friend 💪 Keep your head up.
two full days???? I always thought that it only took one quick bite to get lyme. Well thank you for that info, I learned somehing new.

The other thing to keep in mind is to remove a tick properly if you do find one; rotate it, ideally with a pair of tick tweezers, to flatten the barbs, to make sure you get rid of the whole body, then either wrap it in toilet paper and burst it or drown it in ethyl alcohol. Don’t just yank it or squeeze the tick, it’ll regurgitate the blood it’s already fed on, which can transfer any pathogens it’s carrying even quicker.
Not necessarily, you can get Lyme instantly, a short bite can be enough, been there. Lyme can be treated with antibiotics but it wasn't easy, I was dead tired as the dose wasn't small. Stay safe!

I find it somewhat amazing that I started watching some guy camping in odd places and have found someone I really like and worry about. He's just been a breath of fresh air and we all just enjoy listening to him and seeing what's he's up to now.

Welcome to Nova Scotia Steve! I have not seen a tick for a month or so, but I still recommend you check yourself every day and immediately after entering grassy area like the one you pointed out. If you live here and want to be outdoors, it is just something to accept as part of a daily routine. They seem to be less active this time of year if that makes you feel better. I see them most in late winter and spring.
