Steve! I made this EXACT meal earlier this week and i've been also using this Autotrend 12V cooker from CT for about a year and a half - as you said, amazing for road trips! The Knorr sidekick instructions are mainly for stove top where its expected bunch of liquid will be simmered off - use 60-75% of the liquid on the packet. Protip: in the same aisle as Sidekicks get a box of regular Betty Crocker (non-flavoured) instant mash potatoes - if your cook turns out too watery - add a little bit of the dehydrated potatoes, it will thicken it up nicely as well and is flavour neutral.
I recently found out that plain old flour works well too to thicken up liquidy meals and it also adds a very homey and rich flavor that really sticks to your ribs out in the wilders.
Ah! Winter camping - reminds me of my time in the Boy Scouts of America, about 50 years ago, and we had a "Winter Camporee" and for one of my meals, I made a cubed beef, sliced potatoes & carrots in an aluminum foil pouch over an open fire. No "Step Twos" for me way back then - I was only 15 at the time. However, your stealth adventure sure made my day it's the best part of today. Cheers! My Step Two to you! Thanks!
Youre a Legend . My grandpa was an eagle scout as was my dad. I didnt quite make it but still have 2 gens of exp. Foil cabbage strawberry salmon lemon and honey. Best foil wrap ive made
I have to admit I do love the "camping with Steve videos". All kinds of interesting things going on in the world stay safe Steve and beautiful wife and all.
When I was 10, my dad who was assistant scout master for the local boy scout troop, dragged me along on a 4 day winter camp out with his troop. Thought it would be good bonding for us. It never got warmer than 10F, and was sub-zero at night with the wind chill. There was no insulated ice fishing hut or Mr. Buddy. Just layers, and sleeping bags inside of sleeping bags , under a heavy blanket. I've hated winter ever since, but I enjoy the heck out watching Steve camp in it.
I’m from the southern US where the coldest it ever gets is around 15 or so just on the very coldest nights of the year, typically around January and February, but with the winter daytime highs averaging probably around mid 40s to low 50s. Anything in the 20s is pretty rare around here, so I can’t even imagine camping in those conditions you just described, but the idea of cold weather camping for a night or two in really cold conditions seems like it would be a fun experience to have at least once. Super glad I don’t live up north though, being cold like that for a few months every year would suck lol.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ~> we NEED a Camping with Steve cookbook that has all/many of your one pot recipes! Edit ~> your nightcap was absolutely adorable!!
Mission accomplished! Loved the sleeping cap. I live in a cold climate, in the winter, that is, and I found I was warm under the down comforter but was waking up with a headache. When my mom heard me talk of this, she immediately knitted me a wool cap for my head. She passed away in 2013, but I'm still wearing that wool cap during the cold winter nights.
Here’s a suggestion for your cold feet in the wintertime. As someone who will ride my motorcycle even when it’s -25F to -30F In the wintertime, I have found battery powered heated socks to be a life saver. They last almost a full day on high and will get so warm your feet will sweat if not careful. I also use them for when I’m in a tree standing hunting late season. Have you thought about trying a pair of those? Loved the video and your meal looked quite delicious. Maybe have to try making something similar this weekend. Keep up the awesome work man. 🙂
It's a childhood fantasy to camp in places you're not supposed to. It's why I'm partial to the episodes where he camps in a storm drain and an abandoned gas station.
It's always good to have a well rounded knowledge of ideal off the beaten path places to "Hunker Down" especially if ever a bug out SHTF situation happens
Your camping videos calm my worries and anxiety! I love watching your methodical approach to stealth camping! And your compassionate statements about those who can't choose to live this way during extreme conditions are so kind! You're a true gent! Thank you for all you do!
Hey Steve. Im a trucker and I have one of those cookers, I don't trust it to cook raw meat myself... I only use it in the summer, during the winter I just use the windshield defrost vent with a t shirt over it Love your content. The way you speak is soothing yet you never yell or talk down And how informative you are.....keep it up ......i tell all my camper/survivalist/outdoor noob friends about your channel
My wife and I usually watch your videos every Thursday after putting our daughter to bed. This week we decided to watch your video first because our daughter has been difficult to put too bed all week. 10 minutes in she's snoring next to me. So thank you Steve for putting my 2 year old to sleep.
Pro tip: mushrooms have extreme amounts of water in them... and when you heat them up, they will release the water and the mushrooms will shrink in size; so, rather than add a cup of water, use cream (or 1/2 and 1/2) instead of milk and just add the raw mushrooms... LOVE the cooking you do! keep up the good work!
Yeah i make a mushroom cream sauce for a topping for steak or pork chops. Sautee the shrooms in butter for a little while and season it with salt pepper and garlic. Then add cream and cook down a little. It's really good and I've actually eaten it as a side without the cream.
Hey Steve, awesome video as always! One suggestion on concealment from a military guy. Your camouflage will be even less noticeable if you add some leaves and sticks to break up the lines at the top. Just gather a few more branches, leaves, or grass from the area, add them to the top and sides and bang, you’re impossible to spot.
The best part about Steve's vids is that so many folks and young dudes on the prairies love just hunkering down in the bush and he just blows it out if the water! Love it Steve

Hi Steve, First time posting but long time enjoyer of your videos. Have to say, I've been appreciating your establishing shots more and more, they have a nice framing to them and it's clear that you are focused on the aesthetic beauty of your locations as well as providing a sense of place. That being said, I was flying in to Portland, ME from Joshua Tree and had all my camping stuff with me, and not wanting to spend money on a hotel I took inspiration from your adventures and found myself a nice little ditch in the woods outside the airport and "hunkered down". Wish I would've had a "step two" with me, but oh well. Keep up the good work my friend.
Hey Steve! I'm kinda hooked. As a fellow Canuck, I'd have you over for a step 2 anytime. If you are ever stuck for a video - and the weather isn't conducive to getting out - I'd appreciate a "Cooking With Steve" episode. I'm really glad that you carry bear spray for safety. With crime going thru the roof I've been concerned about something bad. Stay safe and enjoy the stealthing.
Hey Steve, I am along time user of that little cooker, it's really great. I used to drive for a living , used it regularly. I used a lot of soup, stew, beans, etc., any thing with a easy open can. You can also use left over burgers, or hotdogs, fried chicken just wrap in foil. Put it in while driving and had a hot meal when I stopped. Had no worries about the battery. If I stopped for coffee I would get an extra put it in a glass or metal container , and had a hot coffee when I needed. P.S. The little kids. still remember me wrapping hot dogs in foil a heating it on engine manifold.
You have got to love this guy. :) If this is what Canadians are like, I predict a great future for Canada. By now, I have watched a lot of Steves videos. His videos are my anti depression medication nowadays. :)
Steve you should do a Q&A vid sometime! I’d love to hear you talk about things like your worst camping experience, your favorite camping experience, closest call getting busted for stealthy camps, all that kind of stuff. Love the vids!
Steve, I'd love to see you revisit previous spots during a different time of year than the original visit. Like the spot in this video, you said it would be great in the spring time due to having better cover from the leaves. Would be awesome to see you revisit spots like this at a different time of the year. Another idea would be vehicle camping in the hot summer months. Show people how to deal with stealth sleeping in a vehicle when you can't just seal all the doors and windows to perfectly hide your presence there.
Hi Steve, I (and by the comments I can tell many others) enjoy your down to earth videos a lot. So much so that I 🤞 hoped you would consider making longer videos (like 45 minutes or more). I look forward to your weekly content and make it my meal time movie while I eat lunch or dinner. Good luck in your adventures and be safe 🤙

I've learned more about Canada and weird camping from Steve than anywhere else on the internet. Steve proves that *anyone* can go camping with pretty much just about any gear. I usually use a Helikon-Tex Swagman roll for a sleeping bag starting in the late Spring through Summer and into Fall. Packs up very small. I use that same style of pad as well as a poncho and I'm good to go. I also have a tiny backpacking cot when I don't feel like using a hammock. Trangia stove in a flatpack twig stove to boil water in my stainless steel canteen for coffee and meals.
Has Steve made videos about snow camping in general for beginners? As someone who is not from a place where it snows, I would love to learn the basics. For example, packing down the snow. That's not something I would have thought to do. Cheers
I'm not sure we give the right amount of props to Steve for his sacrifices to entertain us every week. I'm feeling chilly just sitting here watching from the comfort of my easy chair! All that snow and ice and cold breezes...brrrrrrr. Thanks Steve. Not sure what else I can say, but you are appreciated and I am entertained.
You never cease to produce amazingly entertaining content Steve. My girls will love this one! We all watch you religiously and they want to stealth camp now! Stay safe and warm sir!
Hahaha Steve, I was literally looking at that same food warmer yesterday here in Toronto. Great to see they work well enough to cook a boiled packaged food. I'm looking for a way to heat my lunch while driving. Something portable and no fuss. Sooo thanks for the impromptu product review. How you do the camping outside in winter in Edmonton really blows my mind. I lived in Edmonton for 4 1/2 years and even on the warm days its still miserably cold at night. Mad respect for you doing these again and again. Your either part polar bear or have an incredible ability to withstand cold. Either way, these videos amaze me. Thanks once again. Keep safe and warm always! Matt -Toronto
I drove commercially for 7 years across the US... had a Road King cooker just like that. It's good when you want a hot meal you prepare yourself and the liners are available at every truck stop you come across. Really have enjoyed your videos and hope to see many more of them.
You ever realize your videos are also pretty solid tutorials if someone ends up homeless? It's not as far away as most people think, and it's not like you have to hand in your smartphone when you lose your housing. Amazing channel all around

The Knorr sidekick instructions are mainly for stove top where its expected bunch of liquid will be simmered off - use 60-75% of the liquid on the packet. Protip: in the same aisle as Sidekicks get a box of regular Betty Crocker (non-flavoured) instant mash potatoes - if your cook turns out too watery - add a little bit of the dehydrated potatoes, it will thicken it up nicely as well and is flavour neutral.
or if they are too watery, just leave them on the heat for one more minute
Great tips!
I recently found out that plain old flour works well too to thicken up liquidy meals and it also adds a very homey and rich flavor that really sticks to your ribs out in the wilders.
Those are some awesome tips I'm going to use them for my everyday life LOL
Mobile meal cooking advice ! Awesome !
“About a cubic inch of butter.” That’s a great description of a practical measurement 😀
Thanks!
I don’t wanna sound weird but I always search for one of your comments on these videos, you always have a pretty interesting story to tell also lol
Everyone! Check out the theme song I made for Steve. ruclips.net/video/TxVU6TjAlz4/видео.html

Boyscout steaks, loved those growing up, we'd put onions, bell peppers, and a little sour cream on them too.
Don't know why, but watching Steve dance on the snow to pat it down gave me the biggest smile. Keep on keepin' on Steve!
Time stamps!!!!
Something about your videos alleviates my 3 am lonely isolation feeling, thanks steve
I have to admit I do love the "camping with Steve videos". All kinds of interesting things going on in the world stay safe Steve and beautiful wife and all.
I was just thinking, we haven’t heard abt her in a few videos! We miss beautiful wife

I miss the days where a man could subject an entire troop of boy scouts to hypothermia without consequences
That's what I called fun as child, still do.
@@scotty2tone We did have the luxury of a heavy canvas tent, probably army surplus...we were camping at a non-weapons range at West Point.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ~> we NEED a Camping with Steve cookbook that has all/many of your one pot recipes!
Edit ~> your nightcap was absolutely adorable!!
Yes, I'd buy it.
Steve has a friendly face and calming demeanor. I think I would be lulled into watching no matter what he was filming.
Honestly, I will never fully grasp the appeal of stealth camping,. That being said, I'm thoroughly hooked on your channel! Party on.
The thrill of not getting caught is part of it
It’s free
It's a childhood fantasy to camp in places you're not supposed to. It's why I'm partial to the episodes where he camps in a storm drain and an abandoned gas station.
Ditto. No interest in doing it myself, but I really enjoy watching Steve do it! Luke from the Outdoor Great Review too.
It's always good to have a well rounded knowledge of ideal off the beaten path places to "Hunker Down" especially if ever a bug out SHTF situation happens
Steve's little nightcap is so cute! Lol! I love how that school bus pulled up right before Steve started talking about his bus.
Your camping videos calm my worries and anxiety! I love watching your methodical approach to stealth camping! And your compassionate statements about those who can't choose to live this way during extreme conditions are so kind! You're a true gent! Thank you for all you do!
Agreed!
Steve deserves his own national geographic show. Next week, Steve sleeps in someone's backyard dressed as a bush.

Steve is able to make any day an adventure day. He gives me a feeling of opportunity and optimism.
Steve you really helped me through Covid.
I binged watched all of your content and loved every minute.
Thank you!
Yay Steve! Hope this goes easier for you than the last few. You deserve to chill and not in the Alberta winter sense.
Such an odd thing to me that these videos, out of all the types of videos draw in the weird spam hooker adds.

I always hit the like before I even watch Steve's vids. I already know I'll feel more positive after watching it. Guarenteed!
A lot of us do exactly that 👍
The best part about Steve's vids is that so many folks and young dudes on the prairies love just hunkering down in the bush and he just blows it out if the water! Love it Steve
You've quickly become one of my favourite people to hang out with 😁 Cheers for keeping me company during these weird times, thanks for keeping me smiling, and you keep me inspired 💕
Oh boy, what Steve does for us, when he is McGyvering through the evening. 🙂
Steve drops a video. I sit and watch. It's that simple. Best part of my Thursday night.
I am so amazed that you can camp outside when it's very cold. That is not easy for the rest of us. God bless!

I was looking at that exact stand of trees earlier this week wondering if you've hid in there overnight in the past. I guess this answers it! Love what you're doing, and don't stop!

My dude, my guy, you don't need to be a compulsive liar. Just say you love the videos and move on,
Just want to say one massive thanks to Steve. Been going through a lot recently and no matter what, at the end of the day i can rely on the sheer loveliness and friendly aura that Steve exudes to give me a smile at the end of the day!
42 thousand 735 view already, I feel like we are late to the party and also glad the party has started so strongly without us ! There is not a more deserving channel. I love Steve's commitment to his art, the art of camping, the art of content creation and all with a generous helping of good dry humour and honest Canadian charm.
Love how Steve always keeps everything clean, so it is easy for me and the family to watch together. Thank you for the awesome content Steve ☆

Hi Steve,
First time posting but long time enjoyer of your videos.
Morning coffee (at 11:25 am :D ) and new adventures from Steve! Smooth way to begin this saturday. Thanks for the content Steve! -Fan from Finland-
Steve seems like one of those cool stoner guys that got along with everybody in high school. Great show!
Watch his boondocking documentary from waaaay back!! Classic!!
Hey Steve! I'm kinda hooked. As a fellow Canuck, I'd have you over for a step 2 anytime. If you are ever stuck for a video - and the weather isn't conducive to getting out - I'd appreciate a "Cooking With Steve" episode. I'm thinking like a clip show of your favourite grub you've made during your RUclips camping career. Stay warm, dry and stealthy brother!
The infamous 'little' sub
Watching these camping vids takes my mind off all the foolishness going on in the world thanks Steve.
I'm really glad that you carry bear spray for safety. With crime going thru the roof I've been concerned about something bad. Stay safe and enjoy the stealthing.
I carry a machete with me also if anyone reaches in my car they will be known as
" lefty" the rest of their life.
Where to buy it?
You have got to love this guy. :) If this is what Canadians are like, I predict a great future for Canada. By now, I have watched a lot of Steves videos. His videos are my anti depression medication nowadays. :)
Steve you should do a Q&A vid sometime! I’d love to hear you talk about things like your worst camping experience, your favorite camping experience, closest call getting busted for stealthy camps, all that kind of stuff. Love the vids!
he has dont stuff like that on live streams.
Steve never disappoints. Shoutout to you Steve and all your amazing subscribers.
Steve demonstrates both types of night caps in this video. Thank you Steve for another successful Stealth.
How not to freeze with steve! I get a little colder every episode! Always makes a fun adventure with your enthusiasm for the basics.

The "didn't get busted" gave me a genuine grin. Thanks for another happy stealth video.
Cheers
Look up Shugemery. He has loads of stuff about hammock camping in the snow. Many give detailed descriptions.
He's also very entertaining.
love your videos Steve. This is my comfort show always helps when I’m having a crappy day
I'm not sure we give the right amount of props to Steve for his sacrifices to entertain us every week. I'm feeling chilly just sitting here watching from the comfort of my easy chair! All that snow and ice and cold breezes...brrrrrrr. Thanks Steve. Not sure what else I can say, but you are appreciated and I am entertained.

How you do the camping outside in winter in Edmonton really blows my mind. I lived in Edmonton for 4 1/2 years and even on the warm days its still miserably cold at night. Mad respect for you doing these again and again.

Love your vids, Steve! Funny enough I recently slept on a bus stop bench on the tail end of a >110km run along Tokyo's longest river and up into the mountains. No stealth here, just rolled out my sleeping bag and passed out while the street racers were whizzing by at 1am. Woke up to cats and deer checking me out. Fun times. 😂
