The battle of Wizna (7th-10th of September 1939). 720 Polish infantrymen, commanded by Władysław Raginis, defended a small fortified line near the village of Wizna against more than 40’000 German soldiers while being under a heavy artillery barrage.

It was the Polish squadron that dealt the most kills to german planes. They were unmatched. There is a memorial of the Polish soldiers here in my city. Thanks from a Polish descendant in the US. My family came to the US after WW1 for a fresh start, but when my grandfather saw what was happening in the land of his parents birth, he enlisted as soon as he could. His biggest regret was Poland being on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. We stayed in touch as best we could through the Soviet years, and finally in 1993 I was able to visit my ancestral homeland! Pozostań silny, moi ludzie! (My apologies for the terrible translation).

@Kacper Dziugan 40 : 1 is calculation of battle troops and their reinforcements. When I was in school our history teacher didn't had 100 % sure how many troops had Poland and Germany in that battle.

It’s not the only one. You know you’re a nation of badasses when “Polish Thermopylae” has multiple results on Wikipedia.
I don't mean to be disrespectful but I doesn't the term Thermopylae only applies when you inflict significant losses onto the enemy whilst facing insurmountable odds? For example the Greeks killed 20000 Persians while losing only 4000. Whereas the battle of Wizna was relatively even in terms of losses (i.e 1 Polish loss = 1 German loss).
@William Cline Understood. However, I still think the term Thermopylae is a bit misplaced because Thermopylae has connotations of "Victory through sacrifice" because the 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians gave the other Greeks time to retreat,regroup and eventually win the war.
Whereas, the battle of Wizna did little to change the outcome of the war, and the invasion of Poland was despite the battle of Wizna, still considered a very swift and successful campaign by the Germans.
So I guess, the battle of Wizna is like the battle of Thermopylae in the sense that they did face insurmountable odds BUT it is not like the story/myth of Thermopylae which is about how the sacrifice of the Spartans was pivotal in eventually defeating the Persians.
Basically, What I'm trying to say is that the battle of Wizna is a lot sadder than Thermopylae because their sacrifice was in vain while the sacrifice of the Greeks is a tale of triumph through adversity and that, therefore, Thermopylae might not be an appropriate term.

This song gives me strength. Almost 20 or so people hate me for some reason (or many reasons I am told). But hearing about how the Polish soldiers resisted the German occupiers knowing they were certain to lose gives me strength to fight back.
