I think its because they are both the Doctor who were healing. 11 was the Doctor who was the one who was healing and learning to let go of the War and everything he had to do, still angry but he was learning to let go. Ncuti's Doctor is like he said hes the one who IS healed cause 14 finally went to therapy for all the trauma of the past and the Horrifying shit they went thorough as 12/13. It like the 5 stages of grief out of order 9: denial, 10: anger, 11:acceptance, 12: barging, with 13: depression with her life almost starting a new round.

27:24 I keep thinking about 15's wording there. He says, "I'm fine because you fix yourself. We're Time Lords. We're doing rehab out of order." He said it like he is somehow already benefitting from the work that 14 is going to do to fix himself.
They want to build this Whoniverse thing. There are going to be spinoffs. Also, 14 has already travelled a bit since he bigenerated. He apparently took Rose to Mars and took Mel to Gilded Age New York. I am completely fine if they just leave 14 where he is. It is a wonderful happy ending.
But they may also be setting up for some kind of spinoff (even if it's just the occasional movie or special) where he confronts and works through the grief and trauma of his past. Maybe by occasionally travelling for that purpose. Could be a lovely way to revisit some of the characters he went through those experiences with.
Then, when he's had a life (and Tenant is done with the role), maybe he merges back into 15 or whoever the current Doctor is at the time. So they benefit from that rehab and the total consciousness of the Doctor eventually ends up back together. Could be interesting.

It also works for the reboot idea, all the baggage and trauma of 60 years stays with 14 as he works through it with some self healing and therapy, which as a result because 15 is from the future, he gets all that healing pre-set and ready to go. It allows new international viewers to watch without having to NEED 60 years of stories worth of lore. So if a viewer wants they can stop and retire with 14 or go on and continue with 15.
It also parallels real life a little, RTD left when he did because of his sick and disabled husband, who needed alot of care and he didn't want to go but did because his husband needed him, Tennant left with him because they were a pair of friends. RTD loves the show still and I think part of him had the Bi-generation because it is like if he had stayed and his husband was still alive too.

It's set up so that if the viewers who hate it want, they can leave and "retire" like 14 does, whilst people who are happy continue with 15. Basically the reboot is the best of both worlds. They don't want to require 60 years of knowledge for international viewers to catch up with for the new series so this way all the baggage is wrapped up with 14 and 15 from the future as a result is all fixed up and basically becomes the fun loving Doctor from the very old days.

When I discovered Doctor Who for the first time, rifling through a character guide in a bookstore, one of the first characters that caught my eye was the Celestial Toymaker, and while other enemies got reintroduced in the modern era, I wondered when would be his turn. Finally, he is here, and he's spectacular! The Spice Girls dance was my favourite scene, I was like " I know it's a dramatic moment where the villain demonstrates his power, but I can't stop clapping to the rythm".
Also, I CAN'T BELIEVE I didn't make a Doctor Horrible connection, but in my defense, I never watched the full video, only some of the songs.
ADDENDUM: I also liked how the Doctor faced TM and told him "how are you so small?". It's both an "up yours, mate" moment and the go-to approach of the Doc to most of his enemies, from the Sycorax to the Master: "you don't have to do this, we can find another way", then the scoff from the baddie, then our favorite Time Lord reminding everyone why so many planets, especially Earth, have not become space dust: because the Doctor was there.

I have a fan theory. Ncuti Gatwa is not the 15th Doctor, he is the First Doctor. The original Doctor that we all know and love has retired to live the quiet life. The bi-generation created a whole new person that is The Doctor, but still fresh and without the trauma of the past weighing down his soul. This makes him the “First” in a whole new line of Doctors yet to come.

  • @SorchaSublime

The way I understand it is that eventually 14 (or "Doctor Noble" as I have decided to call him because as happy as I am to have tennant back I dont think he should get 2 numbers lol) will regenerate again and be pulled back into the bigeneration. It's not a duplication, it's just like... timey wimey therapy so that RTD doesn't have to rehash the doctor being super traumatised in his second era. Which is fair enough, giving the Doctor time war trauma was his big innovation back in 2005 and just doing it over again would be a bit old hat.

    • @chazo1367

That and this way the reboot means international viewers tuning in for the first time won't require 60 years of backstory just to get an idea of what is going on at the start. Multi-Doctor stuff will probably have a pin put into it until it picks up more and those new viewers find time to see older stories and Doctor's.

@@fayesouthall6604 That's the thing about RTD, he's unapologetic about what he does. It's better to do that than hide behind PR. Some of the writing is clunky for sure (see: The Star Beast and its handling of trans rep), but the Toymaker's comments about cancel culture being a game actually work in the context of the episode. It's true IRL -and- true to the story.

Ive seen two theories about the two doctors.
    1. 14 goes on separately and becomes the Curator from Day of The Doctor.

That's exactly what happened at the end of the movie. A gloved hand picked it up then a ding came from the bling ring that used to belong to Ming followed by the sound of someone, presumably Ming (although the guy who played Klytus said it was him as he was supposed to be the bad guy in a potential sequel, any day now...) laughing in a somewhat maniacal fashion.

The Doctor can't save Adric because it is part of an integral fixed point in time (The Cretacous extinction event) which he is forbidden to interfere with. It is clearly an important event in the Doctor's life as it is referenced a fair bit, most recently in the 2022 'The Power of the Doctor' special episode.

I adored this special! Adam, I know exactly what you mean that Doctor Who is back. I haven't been this excited, happy, and emotional about Doctor Who in a long time. These three specials were everything I've been missing...proper scary, creepy, zany, touching, and just plain FUN!
Honestly, I'm struggling to understand why some are having so much trouble with the bi-generation idea. I think for a show to last 60 years and beyond it has to keep reinventing itself and being surprising. And I mean, it's sci-fi, a particularly wacky breed of sci-fi at that. Anything goes. I thought the bi-generation was perfect, a brilliant way to soft reboot the show. I friggin love that 14 gets a beautiful happy ending and finally gets to rest and have a family and 15 gets a fresh new beginning healed from all that trauma.
Speaking of 15, I'm in love already. The last time I took to a Doctor so quickly was David Tennant's first appearance. I am so excited for the Christmas special and Ncuti's first season!
