I absolutely adore the "Well that's alright then" scene. We often use the same lines the Doctor uses when talking about their departures in a way that diminishes their deaths, but it doesn't change the fact that they traveled with the Doctor and ended up dead. No matter what the Doctor tells themselves to feel better, those companions died on the Doctor's watch.

Ncuti's doctor said, we're doing trauma therapy out of order, 14 is the doctor who takes time off, gets therapy of living a life and sorting out his mental health, then regenerates into 15 and gets whisked into the bi-regeneration. We're witnessing a fixed loop in time of the doctors life. So take everything that happens to 14 up until tennant the actor, officially retires, and then... start at 15 from the bigneration and go forward. Brilliant ;)

  • @fabiofarrooficial

There is a theory: The 14th regenerates in the future, when it should actually regenerate. And, in the first moments of 15th, he is pulled into the past. Then, he ended up during the fight between 14th and Toymaker. What makes it clear that 15th came from 14th's future is that he says he's fine because 14th stopped to fix himself. He could only be okay and know why this happened if he came from the future, since, until that moment, the 14th hadn't stopped. At the end of The Giggle, he's heading to the exact spot he was, seconds after he disappeared. And if you think about it, bigeneration. Bi. The same incarnation regenerated twice: Once, in The Giggle and once in the future.

What I hope they do is canonize the story from the expanded Whoniverse that the Curator (from Day of the Doctor) is an alternate version of the Doctor that retired and ran a gallery. The 14th Doctor has essentially retired and letting the 15th Doctor go on adventures so this fits the premise. The Curator even said that the Doctor would revisit some faces. He is also the one that hinted to the 11th Doctor that Gallifrey survived, which the 14th Doctor would know.

When someone physically heals in real-life, from a broken leg etc. they've had time to come to terms with that reality. There's 0 time for instant regeneration to process that you have even been hurt.

Personally, I like the "bi-generation" concept. It's unprecedented, but not entirely - we've seen sort of similar Regeneration-weirdness in the Classic series, albeit not this. And, I don't think the mechanics of _how_ it happened is really important, so much as the fact that it _did_ happen. As I understood it, the 15th Doctor gets all the healing/therapeutic benefits of 14 living out a normal life on Earth - it seems like he _remembers_ all that, at least on some level. That's huge - we've had the Doctor as the Lonely God for so long, carrying all that guilt and trauma since the Time War at least; it'll be a refreshing change to see an incarnation of the character who's finally healed from all that!
And, man, Gatwa made a hell of a first impression! His energy, his charisma, his humor (and, gods, he's hot!)... I can already tell he'll be a lot of fun! And on a personal note, his whole attitude of open, unfiltered love and affection (and flirtatiousness) really connects with me and where I am in my life right now. I'm really looking forward to seeing his era of the show!

Bigeneration is RTD's way to explain why there can be multiple Doctor's in future events. Basically, every Doctor has bigenerated and the "split" version is off doing adventures while we follow the original on their adventures. Then when they come back together (50th Curator) this can explain why they look older in the episode. They just grew old over time and is doing their retirement jobs when we see them again.

That Missy theory is actually really good. The fella who bought the puppet was restored after the Toymaker lost, so theoretically, the master/missy should've too. The tooth was probably empty, so it leaves a lot to theorise about. I think there's also a possibility that Simm's Master bi-generated into Sacha and Missy, explaining the contrasting personalities between them both.

    1. I too am so happy that 14 gets to stay with his family and heal emotionally. The only thing that could make it better would be him getting his other family from the 10th Doctor era back: Rose and Jackie. I have had a theory for a while that the metacrisis Doctor is the Valeyard and will show up again at some point and have to be stop because he has gone round the bend. That could bring the Tylers back to the main universe. Another theory since this episode is what if his Doctor is the one to "visit some old favorite" faces and will eventually become the Curator. I see some people saying he will eventually merge with 15 or into 15, but interview with RTD since the episode kind of imply that is not the plan. 2. Hate to burst the Missy bubble, but Kate Stewart actually has red nail during the episode. I don't know why they would bother to hid it was her, but she is the most logical option.

And yep, loving Ncuti's energy right off the bat. Felt a _bit_ like a Doctor-River combo.
(another reason this universe has been around so long is all the hooks the TV show leaves for other adventures - novels, Big Finish etc. - which I _think_ will be how the 14th Doctor is left, mostly. And i'm fine with that personally - if they want to bring 14 back here and there then great or if we get some audio stuff, also great BUT if it's just that we know they're out there, kind of like Wilf eternally - and harmlessly :) - shooting moles then i'm totally OK with that too, with the Doctor finally getting the one thing I never thought they could have - a happy ending)

Just to clear up any questions people have...
    - Now we have 15, 14 can stay on earth till he dies of old age, when he does and regenerates instead of just turning into 15, he goes back to the bi-generation (so like time travel included with regeneration).
    - When the original stays with 14 at the end and 15 gets his own, 15's tardis is 14's future tardis when he has died of old age. Just like the bi-generation, the tardis has been brought back.
    - Combining all of this, it mean the Doctor gets to heal his mental health and stuff as 14, whilst continuing on the same moment in tim3 as a futu4e self. Wibbley wobbley timey wimey

14 could potentially be the curator from the 50th anniversary since it was never said if he could regenerate or not. Toymaker was a character from an episode from the Hartnell era. That's why 14 said he won a long time ago.

I was definitely apprehensive about David coming back, but I loved how Russell used this incarnation (14) to not only give 10 some closure, but also essentially give a happy ending to the Doctor that we've followed since 2005 all the way until now. Let him REST and settle down to emotionally heal, while 15 who has healed already can start fresh (it's implied in the episode that 15 is better now because 14 healed... who knows how that works, I don't think even Russell knows). The Doctor does love adventuring but I'd argue the happiest we saw him during this run was when he had a family with Amy and Rory and occasionally River, whom he later even spends 24 years with, uninterrupted. The Doctor needs that, but like for a full incarnation of just living with people he loves being happy. He's had it rough.
See you at Christmas Shayla! It's cool to come back to your channel and see you still keeping up with Doctor Who, watching your reactions back then to not only WHO but also Vikings and Agents of Shield was a joy and it's like seeing an old mate. You're a very lovely person.

And here we are again... This is gonna be GOOD!
Man, I kinda hoped to see you react not knowing NPH was in it since you were the ONE person that didn't know... But hey! Here's hoping you have fun as well!
"Please don't come alive". Girl, you KNOW what show you're watching, right...?
"Everbody think's they're right!" I mean... That's pretty much just the usual...
I believe it's an honored tradition to Helicopter tow the TARDIS during an Anniversary episode now. At least Doc ain't hanging from the bottom this time!
Also, UNIT got a whole ass Avengers Tower!
I had the BIGGEST smile on my face when Mel showed up! She was the second to last Companion on the classic Show RIGHT before Ace! She was a computer programmer that never ONCE used a computer before so now she's FINALLY paying that off! Her mentioning the viking guy that ended up with Peri as well was a nice touch...
I love how UNIT has an Alien handling their data. Just goes to show how it mixes into their job! I'm VERY excited to find out if those rumors of a UNIT spin off are true!
The tune was a WONDERFUL touch... How it was INSTANTLY recognizable! But I¿ll have to check you here: The Weeping Angels were Moffat! I'm pretty sure that's the monster that made him Showrunner...
I'm glad you clocked how improtant the Mel-Doctor catchup was... Such a beautiful friendship we didn't get to see much of...
"Donna Noble: Agent of UNIT"! AND she got the Companion Bonus? Perfect! I need that spinoff NOW!
AND HERE WE HAVE IT! The Celestial Toymaker himself! CRIMINALLY underutilized Classic Who villain who went up agains WIlliam Hartnell's First Doctor! He was played by Michael Gough back in the day and now he's played by Neil Patrick Harris! And MAN, he absolutely KILLED IT!
One thing I WILL say... Russel made the Toymaker A LOT creepier than he was back in the day. Fun fact: All the puppets were practical effects!
Toymaker just THROWING THE DEATHS IN 14'S FACE! GODS, NPH went WAY HARDER THAN HE SHOULD HAVE!
So there's a way to get The Master back... You think he's seeing all of this happen in real time and wondering why the hell the Doctor looks like Tennant again?
Well, if the Master IS watching, I KNOW he was proud of that dance number... Neil saw he had ONE episode and WENT FOR IT!
The way the Toymaker didn't take up the Doctor's offer because cancel culture was so entertaining to him is fucking hilarious, btw. Just incredible.
I just want to point out: 10's last words were "I don't want to go". 14's last words were gonna be "Let's go" in French... He was ready. He had his time. But now he doesn't HAVE to go. Now he gets to LIVE! (Also, that "I don't know, it feels different this time" was the last line the Fifth Doctor said before regenerating!)
"No Way!" That's SOME first words! Welcome, 15! Also, don't think about how Tennant is going commando the rest of the episode...
To both give my two cents on this and to answer the question in the Description: I GENUINELY believe that "Bigeneration" is TOTAL BULLSHIT. I noticed RTD pulling Deus Ex Machinas out of his ass in the first special too with the "We choose to let it go" and now this, but it genuinely feels like he just wanted to write a fix-it fic with this one... That said, much like with the Timeless Child, I hate the concept, especially because they didn't give any explanation other than "It's supposed to be a Myth", but I am REALLY curious how it's gonna change things from now... My problem is the repercussions. What's stopping every Doctor from splitting into two like a Worm from now on? What stops the Master from doing it? Is this how we get the Valeyard? I don't know how to feel about the repercussions, but I know they're gonna have to REALLY explain this shit at some point and put some serious restrictions on it...
As for Ncuti's Doctor, he feels AMAZING! Like, whenever a Regen happens, we usually have a slightly depressed Doctor going though the motions and then masking for a Companion, but 15 came in and was PURE positivity from the GO! He's gonna KILL it!
The Legions... Hmm. That's setting up something big, I think. Between that, the mention of The One Who Waits ad whoever the Meep's boss is (unless it's the same person), Ncuti's run is setting up for a BUNCH of shit!
I think it was Kate's hand that took the Master, judging by the nails. Probably to put him in the vault too... But let's face it. That bastard is getting out one way or another!
Gods, the RECAP... "Trial of a Time Lord", "The Key to Time", "Logopolis", "Earthshock"... Adric and Sarah Jane... They went for my heart SPECIFICALLY with that. Ncuti, you're already amazing. And DAVID FUCKING TENNANT HOW DO YOU LOOK LIKE A KICKED PUPPY THAT WELL?!?!
Two Tardises...This means we can have 14 and Donna whenever we want! David Tennant is the PERMANENT GUEST! Shit, that UNIT Spinoff might be even better than I thought now!
"I've never been so happy in all my life." This is a man that was married 4 times, had a child and had a granddaughter who he travelled the universe with, fell in love more times than he could count, discovered his people didn't die by his hand, and saved the universe more times than it deserved... And THIS is the happiest he's ever been... Let 15 handle the new adventures. This Doctor? The 14th? The one that's been running since the start? He gets to stop. He gets to have a break. He gets to LIVE. after all these years. No matter what happens, the other Doctor's got it... And wether or not he becomes something good or bad, a Curator or a Valeyard... Whether we get David Tennant to guest star forever now... I get to say one thing for sure: This Doctor doesn't have to go.
But as for Ncuti? Christmas can't come soon enough! WOO WHO!
Loved your Rambles. Can't wait for next time!
Question: You think 14 just runs into old Companions in the present day? Like, Martha runs into him on occasion and just gives him ALL the shit in the world? 'Cause I fucking ADORE the prospect of it! (Never mind, you got to that just as I wasa typing it!)

This was basically a happily ever after for 10/14. I assume he'll pop out of 14 and become 15 when he regenerates. That hammer also probably just smacked his TARDIS back from the future as opposed to copying it. Hence the ramp and jukebox.

My head cannon is that the 14th doctor becomes the 1st curator and cycles through regenerations as the curator until he's ready to become the 15th doctor. Also, Mel traveled with the 6th and 7th doctors during classic Who.

I think the hand is also missy and that Dhawan comes after Simms. I like to think the master outsmarted the toymaker the same way the doctor did because they bi regenerated but kept their bi regeneration secret and dhawan is the one who battled and lost to the toymaker but then Missy is the one who waits and is the same as the woman he cut the hair off for the doll coz he says ‘it won’t be MISSED’ and ‘she wont MISS anything ever again’ but the toymaker doesn’t know that Missy is the master. We never saw the order of this regeneration and the doctor said timelords doing rehab out of order so I’m curious if same for the Master.

I would say that this episode was a lot more fanservice than story... and I loved it. Kate and Mel and 14 getting a family and 15... and Harris' Toymaker dancing, and the dead-companions scene... it was a firework of emotions and memories... and foreshadowing.

One of the things Davies wanted the specials to do was to set us up for a new spinoff that will follow the adventures of UNIT. _The Giggle_ accomplishes this goal admirably. The primary characters will presumably be Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Shirley Bingham, Melanie Bush, Donna Noble, and The Vlinx. And since Fourteen is now a member of Donna's family, while Fifteen is busy saving the universe from whatever threat it's about to encounter, it's most likely that we'll occasionally see Fourteen in the UNIT spinoff. It's much less likely that we'll encounter him in _Doctor Who._

Ncuti is already great. He was already more than holding his own alongside David Tennant, which suggests great things for what he's going to do with the role during the upcoming season. As for the bi-generation, I don't think it's something that we're going to keep seeing. Like 15 said, it's supposed to be a myth, and I think the Celestial Toymaker's interference was part of what was making myths into reality. Also, this sort of thing has happened before in Star Trek in the first film of the reboot. At the end, there were two Spocks so the younger one was able to go off on adventures with the Enterprise since the older one could stay behind to help rebuild Vulcan. In the same way, 14 can stay on Earth to recover from all of his continuous trauma since 15 was now available to go off and continue to save the universe that constantly needs saving.

    • @kerouac.jackson
      @kerouac.jackson 10 месяцев назад

@@Kyubone Young Spock was going to leave Star Fleet to help establish a new Vulcan, and old Spock told he didn't have to because they could in two places at once, which is sort of what's happening here. Their personal timelines/lifetimes aren't crossing over, they're intersecting and concurrent. The parallel struck me pretty clearly as I was watching this episode.

Great work Shayla. The spilled salt and the rash words of 14 at the edge of the universe will surely continue to cause ripples- It will explain the appearance of gods and mythical beasts - Goblins are coming, after all.

The reference to 15 having 14's memories of healing ("we're doing rehab out of order,") makes me think that 14 will eventually, when his time comes, vanish, travelling back down his own timeline to become 15 and emerge from his past self. Similarly, I'm choosing to interpret the TARDIS thing as 15 knocking next week out of the TARDIS, rather the TARDIS into next week. It's its own future self brought into the present, rather than a duplicate.

Overall I love this episode a lot only thing I’m not a fan of is how the regeneration went down, just makes no sense and them adding more and more random stuff the doctor can do, doesn’t make it good. Also David’s doctor is apart but the other doctors aren’t.. can they not come back and be separated. What are the rules dammit!? Apart from that, loved the Toymaker and the conflict, David and everyone did great as always. Is lovely to see his doctor get a nice ending after everything he went through. Do look forward to Ncuti Gatwa doctor. Happy to see your reactions as always. 💙

The original Toymaker story from back in the day has an appeal that has missed me completely. When I was growing up with the show “Celestial Toymaker” was always held up as the best of the best but you couldn’t watch it because three of the four episodes do not exist. Then a novelization was published and at least one could experience the story that way, but it never really grabbed me at all. Then the one surviving episode was released on a VHS compilation of First Doctor odds and ends and finally I could see something of this fabled classic adventure but it left me seriously underwhelmed. It felt like the show had overspent on the previous couple stories and had to do a cheap one without a lot of moving parts to compensate - AND apparently Hartnell got sick so he had to be written out of most of it, which didn’t help. Michael Gough was great in the part, but the whole thing seemed a bit underdeveloped.
I think it was before the novelization came out that plans were announced to bring back the Toymaker in a Sixth Doctor story called “The Nightmare Fair” but that was part of a season that the BBC canceled for all sorts of reasons that are still debated to this day. The assumption was that Gough would come back and play the Toymaker again but I don’t know if it got that far before it went away. Seems to me the Toymaker appeared in the comics a bunch of times over the years as well so obviously I’m missing something about that original story that resonated with everyone else. Fair enough.
With that background I can’t say I was actively looking forward to “The Giggle” but I assumed/hoped that RTD and NPH would spin gold from what lore existed and they did. 😊
