    It's not in this edited reaction, but they do kind of address Jay's concern about UNIT acting like the Doctor got a new face - based on the reaction to 14 and thinking he's 10, UNIT seems to be trained to not talk to the Doctor about his future selves, which is a cool world-building detail

    I think the best compliment I can possibly give this special is that it feels nostalgic without feeling manipulatively nostalgic. David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Russel T Davis, Murray Gold, we're just back in it. And it doesn't feel like it's trying to "sell you back your childhood" like so many other franchises these days do. It feels real, it feels genuine, there's so much love put into it, it's a perfect blend of camp and silliness while still treating itself with its own sense of kinetic movement and urgency. It's just a good old fashioned fun time that we haven't seen out of Doctor Who in a long time.

    I like the quantity of call-backs in this special: not only there are references to Donna's first adventure, The Runaway Bride (among them Nerys, Donna missing every alien invasion, and her saying she's "descending" the same way the Racnoss queen did), but the whole Meep storyline is taken from an old comic book adventure starring the fourth doctor. The fact that they pulled a reference so far back that the only people who will get it first probably have kids and a mortgage, astonishes me.

      @@FizzyWM No it's not, but the way they worded it wasn't the best. Basically, saying a male presenting Doctor can't understand the metacrisis thing properly, and because they were women they could "let it go" it's fine for the overall story mind you but the wording and phrasing was, again not the best. And now I'm seeing people pointing out the fact - how does an alien from another planet entirely know about pronouns on Earth (when Rose pointed out the Doctor using a he for the Meep) and the Meep said the obvious one that it chooses the definite article aka The Meep (which works obviously). It's nitpicky garbage but it is there and it is why so many people complain about things being "woke" these days that it's being forced down their throat. :|

Gibbons is best known of course for his work on Watchmen, but also did a lot of other great work in the 80s for DC among others, including classic storylines like For The Man Who Has Everything (the Superman birthday story where Mongul traps him in an illusion of Krypton) and the Green Lantern story Mogo Doesn't Socialise, both of which have since been adapted into cartoon form.

    I loved this so much, both the episode and your reaction. You’re totally right that modern Who has been missing so much, for the last few years. I’ve been a Whovian since childhood and seen adventures with every Doctor. But, there’s just so much special magic and camp that RTD brings to the show. There are so many people who work behind the scenes, who he’s also brought back too.👏😀🥲

    A little over the top but, honestly, the queer community deserves some cheesiness every now and then. My only real critique is that I still don't fully understand the episode title. Was the Meep the Star Beast? That might be more on me than them.
    Edit: Thanks for the background!

      Yes, the Meep is the Star Beast. the title is actually from the Meep's first appearance in Doctor Who Magazine in the 80s, a story called 'Doctor Who and the Star Beast', which this special partially adapts

    That episode felt like a legit episode of Doctor Who! Sure, I liked Jodie and her Doctor, but..... it was too serious. It had too many serious topics and wasn´t just as fun as the old Doctor Who episodes...... but THIS.... Holy shit. You could tell that they had fun doing this episode.

    • @ewanholme1687
      @ewanholme1687 Год назад +1

      I mean, Jodie's run had the same comedic/serious ratio as every other Doctor. Like, they've all had some whacky stuff. I can get some criticisms of Jodie's era, even if I don't agree with them, but she had pretty much the same story tone balance as every other NuWho Doctor. Plus, 13 was debatably the most generally upbeat Doctor, tied with 11.

    • @ennayanne
      @ennayanne Год назад

      @@ewanholme1687That's true. I didn't like Jodie's run at all but she was definitely very positive and optimistic, many times to the show's detriment even.

    I'm posting a second time....forgive me....but I just had to tell you guys how wonderful it was to see your amazing positive and fun reaction to this episode. I loved The Star Beast, and it was a shock when I started to view all these incredibly negative reviews elsewhere on the internet. Thing is, several of them weren't just negative, they were really hateful and vicious, not offering thoughtful critism, but just mean-spirited and (I have to say it) bigoted comments about "woke" this and "woke" that, and a flat out attack of Yasmin Finney. It was very sad to see the kind of hateful posts I saw from Doctor Who fans. If you don't like this episode, no problem, but that kind of bigoted hate? In Doctor Who fans? I was just so happy to find this review. Thankyou again!

    In an interview with RTD, he said that the first special would have the feel of a classic style episode, almost self contained. We had a goofy alien and the spisode gave space for Doctor & Donna to reunite ready for the craziness of the next two episodes. Fantastic upgrades for TARDIS and Sonic Screwdriver. A great success ! As much as I wanted a three parter that was packed with cameos, I am very happy with Russell's instinct on Part 1.

    Thank you guys for reacting to Doctor Who....finally. My first Doctor was #4 (Tom Baker) but Capaldi did it for me (He made Parliament Funkadelic cannon...Dr. Funkenstein) and Matt Smith was a gem. I watch some of Jodi but I couldn't get through most of it. The fun wasn't there. My nephews heard Meep and thought it was Phineas and Ferb Meap 😂. Jay's look when he realized the twist and how he loves it. Meap will be back. Now, I'm off to eat some Starburst (The Reds).
