I've been fighting for the last 3 days or so with copyright to have this be viewable in the UK/surrounding areas so if this video disappears at some point in the future then that's why 😅 I think this is the 10th or 11th version of this video, but for the sake of irony let's say the 10th 👀
Yeah Doctor Who has become a really hard show for reaction channels in recent years. I've seen people get around it by putting certain segments of their reactions on 2x speed, avoiding using the sound of the episode when there's loud music in there, and blurring which is what I see you doing.
It was really nice to see someone who wasn't a wheelchair user notice that "the lack of hover chair" made for better representation. The ramps in the TARDIS also make it accessible. That subtle representation made me super happy as well as Shirley not being paralyzed, showing that people with other disabilities use wheelchairs. Putting Shirley and the Doctor on the same level, in the shot, showed they were equals in a visual sense. 10/10 all around.

Yes, except the lack of a hover chair creates a MAJOR problem: she becomes a token character because it makes no sense to send a FIELD agent that can be stopped by something as common as a flight of stairs.
It's too bad because the character is quite likable (except when making that "you've been served" when Donna and Rose bash him for being male) and then you realize "oh, she's there for inclusion's sake".
Clearly you didn't watch classic Who as the TARDIS console room was always flat with no obstacles - except for the wooden secondary console room.
@@Mark-nh2hs Yes, and one of the things that New Who improved on was that every Doctor had their own TARDIS, with a personality of their own. Even 13th's, which was boring as hell was far more creative than the crap we got.
And, come on! Having Donna enter the new TARDIS they miss the opportunity of have her (completely in character) continue the "Oh, you've redecorated" running gag!

Apart from so much positive representation of people who so very much need it, I think maybe my favorite thing is the ways that Sylvia has grown with the years. 15 years ago, she really didn't seem to be that invested in Donna, like she was a big disappointment or something -- something the Doctor basically called her out on when he left Donna with them then. But now, the way she falls all over herself to protect Donna from literally ANYTHING that could make her remember, SO FIERCELY...I really love that for her. And that scene between her and Donna with the misgender stumble... chef's kiss. I already chimed in on a different thread about the one thing that didn't sit well with me, so I'm not gonna harp on it again.
Honestly, I'm just so glad Who is back.
"Positive" representation? She's the typical toxic trans person that bitches about pronouns and think that being a male is something to be scolded or bashed for. That's the kind of trans person I would "dead name" on purpose.
I love 14 because on the surface he has the mannerisms of 10 but deeper he has the personality of 11, 12 and 13. He masks less and doesn't try too hard to be "more human", he's able to control himself better emotionally, he's more friendly and open about his feelings. Russell an David both said it wasn't a conscious decision to make him different from 10, but they've acknowledged the Doctor's change from the past almost 14 years anyway. One of the scenes which really shows this is the scene in the Tardis; while he's running around like 10, he's got a childlike nature which 11 and 13 had.
Also this episode was based off of a 4th Doctor comic from I think 1980. That was the comic where the Meep was introduced to the world of expanded media, though in expanded media they were referred to as "Beep the Meep". You mention how nice the effects on Beep are, and that's because Doctor Who production is now being done by Bad Wolf Studios, the studio that made His Dark Materials. And in Ncuti's run the effects are getting even better because it will have Disney budget poured in there too (as Disney Plus is streaming the new Doctor Who internationally).
I'm so happy you're doing Doctor Who reactions as I love your Better Call Saul reactions so this is great to me as someone who's devoted a lot of my life to Doctor Who. I have very high hopes for the next episode so I really hope you react to that one too.
Typical NuWho where all the Doctors post Tennant are just poor copies of previous NuWho Doctors - unlike Classic Who where each doctor was totally different from the one before.
@@Mark-nh2hs yeah I think 13 was a bit too much of a surface level copy of 10 and 11. But with 14 it just makes sense as it's 10 but with the experiences of 11, 12 and 13.
I’ve watched a few reactions of this episode since it aired, but this is definitely the best one since you actually discuss the content properly. Also, loved your take on not erasing accessibility issues by giving Shirley a hover chair or something similar. Also, I’m totally with you about David’s physicality in this role (and other roles as well). He’s just fun to watch! So looking forward to the future of Doctor Who at the moment.

As someone who didn’t see any wheelchair representation growing up other than the “poor little tragic victim that needs to be protected from the world” trope, I would appreciate even a token character but I don’t think that’s what she is.
She proved her worth in this episode, and I’m sure we’ll see her do it again.
Also, RTD has worked with her before, so maybe… Maybe there’s a possibility that he, you know, like her as an actor?
@@Blodsten90 I'm not against the character. My problem (apart from the condescending tone she has towards the Doctor) is that she could have been written a lot better.
I would have gone the route of her being the one to build her special chair to be able to overcome the obstacles a wheelchair bound person might find (come on, she can fire rockets from it but can't hover?) and I would have made her get possessed but her higher intellect would have allowed to fight back (with some difficulty, as not to portray her as an "overpowered" character, but prevailing in the end).
For crying out loud! They point at the very reason why is stupid to put her as a field agent. Unless RTD is going a different, more fucked up route: saying that being disabled can be a GOOD thing. And given his sudden opinion on wheelchair users (don't forget there were, at least, three villains in one form or another of the device in his previous run), I wouldn't put it past him to try to convey such a fucked up message.
@@Blodsten90 She was very good in Years and years, which I what I saw her in previously. She was also in an episode of Greg Davies' "The Cleaner", and I saw her in a talking heads type of episode in a series that was all about different disabled characters a few years ago. Yeah - RTD just likes her and wanted her in when he came back to Doctor Who. I thought she was a bit underused in this episode - but since it looks like there's another big UNIT storyline coming up, I'm expecting to see a bit more of her then.
Who and Buffy? Can I subscribe twice? Btw, RTD is on record as saying Buffy informed the reboot (by which I mean 9 onwards) in regard to structure and style
I love this reaction. Tennant is definitely my Doctor as well. And the Doctor and Donna are a beautiful combination. Also loving the representation and your comments about it. And I love that it shows Rose's family trying their best and loving her no matter what.

i always saw letting go of the metacrisis as something donna literally couldnt do before she had rose (and unlocking her memories when rose was still a baby probably wouldve killed baby rose bc shes so small). that donnas mind was burning too hard and fast for her to realise she could at the time, let alone actually do it. but it being shared between her and rose made it possible for her to let it go. i really liked that, it made those years where she didnt have her memory still feel important, like it wasnt a solution that couldve happened at any time and she was sad for so long for nothing. the life she made outside of the doctor is what saved her
Sadly, some dudes are upset and say they threw men under the bus. I do not think that was really the message.
That was a fun reaction! I actually liked this special a lot, but that might just be that 10 is my Doctor and Donna is my favourite companion, so to have them back made me happy! And their chemistry is intact, they're so good together! I do feel a couple of things could have been done better, but then the episode would have to be a lot longer XD And I really like the evil Meep!
The only detail I would have left out was the whole "too bad you're not a woman anymore, a man can't understand" thing. Because, on the one hand, 14 has all of 13 memories, so he should be able to understand. I mean, they had just stated that the Doctor is both male and female, and more, right? And, as a feminist myself, I don't think there are things men can't understand. Plus, trust me, plenty of women do not know how to let go XD Now, here's what I don't understand, and that's people who say they can't watch the show because of things like that, cause, seriously, it's just a phrase in an otherwise very entertaining episode, is that all it takes to scare you off?
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the other two specials, even more so the third one! I hope you'll be able to get your reactions past copyright!
I'm really glad to see someone else say what I was thinking about that, more or less. EVERYTHING they did with regard to gender up to that point was SO, SO PERFECT, and then they chose to lead into the resolution (which was fine) with what came across like an insult toward the entire male gender. I'm not mad at it, right, because letting things go has never been something I've had much trouble with... but as a person who's spent much of his life being many people's first openly gay acquaintance, I know you don't change people's minds by insulting them. So, I can see why people might be put off by that one. But Doctor Who's like an old friend; sometimes they flub it up a bit. You forgive 'em and move on.
Fantastic routine, just didn't stick the landing, basically. I'm sure they could've found a way to let it go without the very generalized low blow. Could have just as easily made it a deficit of his timelord brain that they understood as humans. To be honest, I think that might've been a nice little callback to the Doctor Donna bringing something unique to the mix 15 years ago.
But I also know that they meant well, so I'll look back on this episode and love it as a whole; I'll just always cringe at that particular line. Certainly won't stop me from being excited for what's to come. Or cringing at the people who so adamantly hate positive representation of minority groups in media, amirite?
The wording was the main issue, it would've worked better if it was "You in particular" because of 10's inability to let go, or at the Timelord males in general who have ego and power problems when shown. It's not a massive deal though, some channels are saying it's proof Doctor Who is cancelled.
@@chazo1367 You're right. That's something I was just thinking on, myself, and I think that's the crux of it. Ten didn't want to go, didn't want to give it up. Meanwhile, Twelve's last words were, "Doctor, I let you go." So, that's a big reason why that statement just doesn't work. It's probably just an oversight; just an unfortunately glaring one.
Doctor Who is working to be diverse. Inclusive. And rightly so. The Doctor's entire M.O. is that he cares about people. And I think what the people crying "cancelled" don't realize is, the show's the one cancelling them. If they can't care about EVERYBODY, then maybe this ride isn't for them.
I don't know. The sonic screwdriver shield feels a bit overpowered. I think if creating it burned out the screwdriver I'd be more okay with it as it would be a last resort type of thing. This makes it seem that they can pull it out whenever they want. Whereas we had a bit more of creative escapes and awesome Doctor speeches when issues like this happened in the past.
That's fair, or maybe if it drained the power so you can only do it in dire circumstances? I think 14 only got away with it here because the foes were focused on each other. It took a lot of time to conjure one, not to mention two, which to me felt like a decent handicap for keeping it from being too OP in every circumstance.
I think that was a pretty creative escape, just because he used the sonic to do it doesn't mean it wasn't.
It takes some time is a good thing, though it also means we shouldn't get incompetent enemies much, during chase scenes they get stormtrooper accuracy because of plot, maybe with this they are more accurate but the Doctor literally uses shields to not be hit rather than every shot going wide or short.
It took him a long time to make those shields if the meeps army wasn’t shooting at the other guys but at the doctor he wouldn’t have had time make the shields.

Aw, I loved Jodie's Doctor and there were several episodes I *really* enjoyed.
Donna and Wilf are by far my favorite companions.
I think David had been doing Good Omens and Around the World in 80 days, where his accent is slightly more posh, so it could be that keeps bleeding through.

I'm sure someone's mentioned it already, but this story was adapted from an 80s Doctor Who comic! The Meep, the Wrarth Warriors, even Rose's friend 'Fudge'. Obviously the episode has to change some stuff with the focus on Donna and her family, but still. It's cool to see them bring these more obscure Who stories to a wider audience

I love your reactions. So glad you did this. Eccleston was the one who introduced me to the Doctor. Tennant was the one I fell in love with and Matt Smith felt like my best friend. Capaldi and Whitaker were not really my favorites. I am so excited for Tennant's specials.

That said… as someone who loved Jodie and 13 and really liked a lot of the Chibnall Era eps… it does make me sad (and a bit defensive, ngl) that people are using this to again swipe at the last Doctor and those eps. Wish we could enjoy these without feeling the need to look back and be like “See, we told you she/those sucked”

Really enjoyed your reaction, really good to see such positivity about this episode and the issues (trans character, non-binary, doctor apparently being put down by Donna & Rose for being a man and the whole let it go scene) that seem to have upset some viewers of this episode. Its meant to be fun but also has to move with the times and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
I know you didn't specify when in the Capaldi era you fell off, and I originally did too, but I would HIGHLY recommend going back and watching Series 10
I should re-watch it honestly, I think I'd appreciate it more nowadays. I remember liking his first season more so and then dropping off. Not sure where. I remember the first season was a little darker (at least for the Doctor) and read somewhere that they reversed that because it turned out to be not so popular. I have no idea how accurate that is 😂 my memory on his era is sketchy tbh.

@@TylerAlexander Fair enough, I fell off in Series 9 personally (I think that was just because I was a kid and I had that phase where I grew out of it), but Capaldis arc as the Doctor really comes together in Series 10, he still has a darker side but it's the best character arc for an incarnation of the Doctor since Eccleston. Also Series 10 has an overtly anti-capitalist message across the entire series, it's pretty fantastic (and imo the best companion since Donna). I would also highly recommend watching the three part finale of Series 9, and the Christmas special, it gives you everything you need to start watching Series 10 and one of those episodes is what many, many people consider to be the best episode of the entire show (Heaven Sent), it would be cool to see you react to it but honestly I'd be glad even if you watched it on your own time.

Yeah, the TARDIS can see the past and future. This control room was probably archived a long time ago, just waiting for Donna to return. I think it’s an intentional overreaction on her part, sending them off into the wild blue yonder, because she understood the assignment and they needed to be where they’re going…

I haven't kept up to date with Dr Who, but really enjoyed this episode, especially getting some non binary and disability representation!
I was a bit uncomfortable with the Doctor being judged as "male presenting" at the end. "The definitive article" was expressed as the Doctor's preferred pronoun, and the Doctor has very recently experienced life as a woman. It doesn't seem fair to judge the Doctor as someone who thinks like a typical "male presenting" person of our species.
I came for the buffy (and still love those vids sm) but ive been really enjoying your good place and haunting of hill house reactions as well. i'd definitely watch if you kept covering dr who!

Thanks for this and your commentary. I loved this episode as well, really loved it but how could the return of Tennant and Tate not be anything but wonderful. There appears to be a bit of a divide between us Brits and our cousins across the Pond. Many of them appear to have got totally hung up on the Trans issue and are accusing the BBC of preaching to them. I thought the bit with Meeps claiming that his pronouns are the definite article was an hilarious send-up of the whole thing
No in Jodie's era the sonic screwdriver was so overused that it seemed to overshadow the Doctor at times
I loved this special, and I loved your commentary on it. Of all the reactors I've tried, you by far dug most into the messaging present in the story, in a very good way. Plus you are one of the very few reactors who didn't misgender the Meep at all after the scene discussing the Meep's pronouns. Thank you so much for that.
I also love what you said in one of your comments below. That's where I'm at too. Yes, a couple moments were a bit clunky. But overall the messaging (and the episode as a whole) were so good, and I find it unbelievably frustrating when slightly clunky positive queer and feminist rep is where people draw the line in the sand. In THIS show? Where lots of silly, clunky moments exist, even in the best seasons? Please. Seems to say more about the people up in arms than about the show itself.

Really love this reaction and how excited you are for the inclusion and just greatness all around! great to see Tennant back but Jodies doctor was pretty damn good, the writing just wasn't always the best I think.

I enjoy Jodie as an Actor, but the writing during her episodes just didn't keep me engaged. I felt a bit let down that she didn't get better stories to act with.

I don't like the idea of drawing your focus to a negative point since you enjoyed the episode so much (which I did too) but curious to any thoughts you have about the speech Rose and Donna gave whilst resolving the meta crisis stuff. I personally found both the "shame your not a woman anymore, she would have understood" and "something a male presenting timelord will never understand" lines pretty sexist/misandrist. In an episode so focused on inclusion for almost every demographic feels like a bit of a slap in the face to men and doesn't sit right with me to specifically exclude one demographic from the inclusiveness they were aiming to achieve.
I can understand this perspective. I do agree that in general it wouldn't be healthy to make a habit out of that sort of thing.
Personally it washed over me and I wasn't so bothered by it because it struck me in the moment as more of a 'redress' of the balance. So often in media we have white men at the forefront to the detriment of anyone else and for one moment to say 'actually, we as women worked this out when you couldn't' was fine considering that context. Does that mean we should make a habit out of that? No. Does that mean that just because 14 is a man, is it good that this was presented as the reason he couldn't work it out? Also no. I think if you dig deeper it's problematic, but like I say I think in this one instance I understood what they were going for in terms of representation and almost pushing too far over to redress that balance. I'd agree it could maybe have been worded better.
I think for the moment in the episode and considering that historical media context it was fine. I've also seen a take that said 'Jodie's Doctor is a hot mess and totally wouldn't have worked it out'. Which I could see too. I think it's healthy to be wary of this sort of thing and hold in our minds that while in this one moment it might be earned, it's not a habit we should be taking forward with us and doing regularly, because then you're not redressing the balance so much, you're swinging over the mark and the balance is lost once more.
So I think you're valid in what you're saying. For me personally I think it was fine in this episode. I think it felt to me like a redressing the balance in other respects too (empowering a wheelchair user when those folk are usually omitted entirely or shown in circumstances negative, and giving us positive/healthy trans rep), and so combined with that theme it fit for me.

The problem is that *it is* being done over and over.
Bill Potts's "moving" last words to the Doctor before he disappeared forever from her life were: "remember how I only like women and also you're very old? Yeah? Well, that's it, I just wanted to remind you." This to someone who had never made any move on her nor shown romantic or sexual interest of any kind.
The 13th Doctor's run was *literally littered* with gratuitous "men are the worst / women are so much better" moments made to look like "empowering", when they were just... let's use the proper word: sexist.
Now this new "incident".

When we're literally bombarded by this kind of normalized discrimination by all sides... it's not "redress" anymore.
When someone put in charge of a videogame franchise played by millions of children and adults alike thinks it's ok / empowering / rightful to openly justify his choices by saying "I'm happy I'm discriminating against straight white men, because they all deserve it", it's not "redress": it's racism, it's sexism, it's sexual discrimination.
When a woman who has the lead role in an incoming movie "jokes" that hopefully they'll edit the movie before its final version and cut all of her male co-worker's ("great guy, btw") scenes... *not expecting to be called out on it,* and so accostumed to her toxic environment that she even expects people *to laugh with her,* it's not "taking something back" anymore. It's just sexism.
Authors, writers, producers, etc. saying sexism / racism / discrimination of any kind is done to "balance things out" has become an easy excuse because there are people willing to accept that excuse, no questions asked.
It's the "black people can't be racist, therefore I will continue to do it" surreal argument all over again.
We... the left, the democratics, people who love equality, whatever you prefer to label yourself... basically we, those who do not like discrimination, should call them out. All of them. Always. Not just sometimes.
What we have is a world with the "woke" side and the "alt right" side spreading disgusting messages of hate 24/7, and using any channel they can find (including people's favorite childhood TV show).
What a lot of us refuse to see is that these two groups are the same. They just choose different targets.
Like Greek nationalists and Turkish nationalists, like Christian fundamentalists and Muslim fundamentalists, like violent supporters of enemy football teams... just because one side viscerally hates the other, *it doesn't mean either of them is right.* Or even acceptable.
And the rest of us are left with threee choices:
1) To speak up and be invariably accused to be a "wokester" and a fascist at the same time, sometimes followed by things like bullying, doxxing, physical violence when applicable and such.
2) To shut up so we don't stand out, which is what most people choose, sacrificing our desire to do something about it in order to be left alone.
3) Or, even worse, to choose a side, giving up on our own principles and (often slowly and gradually) deciding to justify disgusting discriminatory behaviors against "the acceptable target of our choice", simply because we think it would look worse to the world and to ourselves if we were doing it to "the acceptable targets of the other side".

@@happyslapsgiving5421 With Bill it was basically last words, and it's part of who she is as she is being consumed by the Cyber programming. Neither her of the Doctor were expecting to actually walk out and neither of the two are actually very good at talking about their feelings, so she chose something a little cheesy to help lighten the mood before running off to die like the Doctor.
Was the Meep speaking English?
Possibly. The Meep could have been going to Earth deliberately and had learned a few local languages in preparation of taking over.
But also, the only times we saw the Meep speaking was around the Doctor, Donna, or Rose, and considering the whole metacrisis thing and the TARDIS being nearby, it could have been translating for them. We've seen the TARDIS translate for people other than the Doctor and companions before just due to proximity to the Doctor (The Christmas Invasion and The Eaters of Light are the most obvious examples I can think of where it's openly acknowledged) so that could be happening with Donna and Rose because even if their Time Lord-ness was locked away it was still present.

This episode was so close to being a good one...
But no, they had to put the agenda first.
And no, I'm not against Rose being trans, nor her having part of the energy of the meta crisis and that being the reason she is trans. I'm not against them tackling issues that trans people really face like assholes calling them by their former name or their family (specially the elderly) not knowing how to treat them, calling that out can be a good thing. If done properly, which it kind of did (although all the "she's beutiful" and "she's perfect" was a bit too much).
But Rose is the typical toxic trans person that bitches about how other people talk and thinks herself to be above the normal people just because she's trans. She's the kind of trans person that gives the trans community the image that rubs people like who would support them the wrong way and causes more anger towards the community in general.
And what the fuck is up with all the male bashing and demeaning? When people complain about regular fans hating this special, they always forget that men are a huge part of the fandom that made Doctor Who the success it is.
Not to mention how they cheapened Donna's ending. How much more interesting it would have been if that was the plot of the spacials? Having a child gave her time, but she's still going to die and they need to find a way to save them both together, as THREE "Doctors". And it would have avoided that fucking condescending scene where they tell the main character he knows nothing because he is a man.
