The funniest comment by far I've seen is meme of the Toymaker talking about fearing the one who waits, then cutting to Cherry waiting for that cup of tea 🤣
Really love your analysis. So intelligent and you are not afraid to share things you do like despite the majority screaming against it, and also the thinks you don't or didn't like but with an intellectual reason as to why and acknowledging you still appreciated the value these things brings. It's plain that Mrs Flood knows what a Tardis is, but until the Doctor's dissappeared she didn't know that the Police Box was one. So she knows Time Lords and their mode of travel, but has probably never met the Doctor.
    Let the speculation begin!
It was so nice to see a joyful Doctor, and my first thought on seeing him in the club was 'finally, the Doctor dances!' On seeing a different reactor, the 'long hot summer with Houdini' refers to a Colin Baker episode from The Big Finish.

This was my take on flood. She doesn't recognize the doctors tardis but once it dematerializes she recognizes it as A tardis. the next thing she asks the doctor is who he is. I think she's really asking "which timelord are you?"

You are one of the few people who are actually open to the timeless child idea, cause most people aren't. Chibnall era had its faults, but its just as much Doctor Who as any other seasons and I'm so happy you're open to it. I also love that you love how Ncuti is so positive, which isn't noted as much, cause Doctor Who has been on the dark side for a while(Jodie's doctor started off like that, but got slowly darker). Got a new subscriber!! Merry Christmas !
P.S. The 4th wall break is an Homage to William Hartnell's First doctors christmas special, where he looked to the camera and wished the audience merry christmas.

I disliked the timeless child, but I've actually liked what Russell has been doing with it and it has almost made me do a 180 and want to see what he does with it. I have been hoping for so long never to hear about it again, but Russell has made me a believer, and Ncuti sold that little interaction about him being a foundling too.
I'm loving the new era already. I still keep sewing a whole slew of videos saying RIP Doctor Who and whatnot, but it seems in rude health to me, and the ratings were great, though again, many will try tell you different.
Enjoy the rest of the festive season everyone. I'm chilling out, and actually watching some classic Who with Peter Davison. Had never seen any of him at all, it's good stuff.

My two main questions from the end of this episode are 1) Who is Mrs. Flood, and 2) Is there any more significance to the crack in the ceiling than it just being a crack in the ceiling? This show has permanently altered my perception of cracks and angel statues, so I can't help but wonder about this crack. Is it simply a crack in the ceiling, or is it a tear in the very fabric of reality/the universe/etc.? I can't wait for the upcoming season, and it already feels like it's going to feel like forever when in reality it's probably like 5 months or so.

Smith hasmd a manic energy that was fun - but always hiding something darker. It's like 15 said, he never stopped running and with this Doctor, we see what happens WITHOUT that darkness beneath the joy, what happens when the Doctor stops and just deals with everything.
There is a lightness under it, not shadow of war and trauma.

I love everything about this episode. As I’ve gotten older (I was already in college when the first Hartnell episode was broadcast) I’ve found that very few things still surprise me. I was glued to the screen through this whole episode because it felt fresh and it was constantly surprising me. I loved the sense of fun and joy and quirkiness, and yet you can feel a serious side underlying it. I was blown away by Janis Goblin’s totally unexpected song (glad I had avoided the spoilers), not only because it was so well done, but because it was such a complete surprise. (I’m reminded of the first time I saw the alien bar scene in Star Wars.) Cannot wait to see where the Ncuti era goes.

Chris Chibnall introduced a lot of things which he could have done a lot with but just didn't execute well at all. I'm glad Russell is using ideas from the Chibnall era because he's finally using the potential these ideas have by exploring characters with them, whether it be showing the impact of the Flux on the Doctor or showing the Doctor's reaction to the timeless child stuff. Particularly because part of Chibnall's inspiration for the timeless child was his experience as someone who was adopted.
Very similarly I feel like the 15th Doctor is what the 13th Doctor could have been. In series 11 it felt like they were going ahead with a Doctor who was more joyful and more open, but the character kept acting in ways which completely contradicted this, and then this whole theme with the character was completely ignored past series 11. Where as now the Doctor's openness is being explored to its full, from his conversations with the 14th Doctor to his admiration of kids to his sadness when Ruby disappeared. And Russell is fully making the most of 15's joyfulness having him singing and dancing and just generally being fun to watch.

On the Doctor's backstory, I feel like writers have two somewhat opposed desires for the Doctor that pull them one way or the other:
    1. They like that the Doctor is mysterious, that both the companion and the audience kind of cannot know all the dimensions of the Doctor.
    2. They like that the Doctor is kind of an idiot. Famously almost flunked out of the Timelord Academy. A very Douglas Adams-esque joke about how the Doctor only seems like a genius to humans because humans are morons compared to even the middest Time Lord to ever draw breath.
The later of those demands the Doctor not really be special in any way other than deciding to steal a TARDIS and go on a never-ending vacation in the Gallifreyan equivalent of a nearly broken down camper-van.
The former though demands they be something far, far greater than that at this point because the later is more or less what we came to understand them as.

idk - I feel like no2 is something that only got leaned into at all when Romana was travelling with the Doctor, and then we got a lot of "didn't you learn this at the academy?" stuff because Romana was legitimately smart at schoolwork. And like you say, that was a thing that was actually happening around the time that Douglas Adams was actually the Script Editor.

Everyone was so 'WHAT??' about the Mrs Flood scene, that they seemed to miss one detail that is either hugely important, or a continuity mistake (and I can't believe with the budget they had, it would be missed).. The Doctor spends most of the episode in his orange top and brown coat, he walks into the Tardis, Ruby has her realisation and follows him in... and he is now wearing a light blue top under the coat. He had no reason to change while waiting for her, so what did he do in space and time before returning outside her house (in a change of clothes) ready to pick her up??

I am absolutely with you. Doctor Who is all about change (I mean, regeneration, right?), and it's amazing how people are getting bent out of shape for something they liked doing what it's supposed to do. Even if you follow their pretzel logic, it's bollocks; oh my god, The Doctor is having fun! Yes - but do you want to go and rewatch Tennant's first season again? So it had music in it - Eccleston danced, for gods' sakes!
    Ugh.
Personally, I'm surprised nobody seems to be treating the 'mavity' thing as anything more than a running joke. I would like to bet that we're going to get to see Isaac Newton again in an episode where they have to go back and change it back to 'gravity'.

Yeah, that was my thing with absolutely HATING the Timeless Child crap. The thing that was always awesome about the Doctor is that, in his society, he was what the Time Lords would consider "nothing special". He was a bad student, a troublemaker, and was never some high ranking dude in the society. What made him special was who he was, not what he was. He was resourceful, determined, good at thinking outside the box, etc.
The Timeless Child thing completely destroyed all of that. I won't mind if RTD sticks with the whole "adopted" thing and flushes the "his very existence gave the Time Lords the power of regeneration" part, but the idea that the Doctor is some sort of alternate dimension super-being pisses me off a LOT. That's not what he is! I refuse to acknowledge it, no matter how many showrunners try to keep it going.

I liked this episode a lot, but maybe too much exposition for my taste XD I think Ncuti has the right energy for the Doctor, and we see some range in his emotions, which is good, cause it's necessary for a main character. To be honest, I wasn't a fan of Ruby here, but maybe it's just that she reminded me too much of Rose, and I can't stand Rose XD. I will give her a chance, though. I do agree that there's something up with the next door lady (already forgotten her name), I thought she might be Ruby's birth mother, but that seems too obvious, so I don't know. And you mentioned tropes and things that become too predictable, well, for me that's the musical number. It seems all shows need to have one these days. It used to be an exception, now it's a rule. The one in this episode was good, but yeah, predictable. I do like the song!
About the Doctor's origin, I'm among the people who don't like the idea of the Timeless Child, I do believe it takes away from what made the Doctor interesting. He was different because he made decisions other Time Lords wouldn't, for other reasons, for other principles; now he's just a different species. Not my favourite. It won't make me hate the show, or say that it's ruined, though. We'll see what becomes of it with better writing...

Highest rated scripted programme of Christmas Day by some margin (in overnights anyway). Also the previous specials have done very well in audience share with the hard to reach 18-34 demographic. So no, its performance has been good so far for the BBC for both the strategic and audience share metrics they care about. That doesn’t mean you have to enjoy it, but please stop constructing a public. It just weakens your criticism by making it look like you’re cherry picking without critical thought.
My criticisms come down to the slightly rushed villains. I can understand why (cutting anything else to give more time for them would have eliminated character beats and plot hooks that are the entire purpose of a companion introduction), but it does mean they’re a bit flat. However, I can also see that being purposeful to not hit the ‘Toymaker has disrupted the operation of the universe’ beats too hard right out of the gate. Especially on a ‘casual audience’ episode like a Christmas special. Guess we’ll see in the summer.
