    Technically this is no longer a "60th anniversary special", but rather a Christmas special. Christmas specials have been a regular staple of the modern Who airing 1 a year from 2005-2017. They took a break from that in recent years and switched to a New Years special, but this is the grand return of the Christmas Special. The important difference is this is actually intended as an episode for new viewers to jump onto.

    Another thing because 14 cast the salt at the edge of the universe and let the toymaker through it also let the goblins through which allows doctor who to have more fantasy things as well as the sci-fi things so there will be a bit of criticism from hard sci-fi fans but i really enjoy it.

      Doctor Who's never really been *hard* sci-fi. If you replace "Re-spongulate the hydroverters" with "Magic", the show wouldn't noticeably suffer as a result. That's why I don't mind it going fantasy. I realised recently, when my friend who is a scientist was looking for some sci fi to read that the sci fi I'm into is definitely more fantastical.

    • @mr.flibble3190

    Ncuti and Millie's energy as The Doctor and Ruby is already enough to sell me on the new upcoming era. I don't know what the negativity RUclips channels are seeing other than: "it has gay and trans characters, it's woke!" While we got a small glimpse in the 60th, the 15th Doctor gets his proper chance in his actual first adventure, and to me he passes the first impresions, there were multiple times watching this where I went "yep, thats The Doctor alright." I really wanna see where they're gonna take his character. The episode itself is definitely enjoyable, not a groundbreaking one but for a first adventure it's definitely great, the goblins (which should've been called Gremlins considering they do gremlin behavior) definitely pose a threat, love how unsettling it is in the alternate timeline. And Ms. Flood is very... well considering she knows what a TARDIS is, I very much wonder where that'll go. Can't wait for Series 14- oh wait I forgot they're recounting again starting with season 1... Uh, can't wait for (new NEW) season 1

      @@BrainOnBinge in Latin, "ambulare" means "to walk" (we get words like "amble" and "ambulance" from it) and "per-" means "all over" (also seen in "permeate" - to pass through all over)

    Goblins (and their king) in a churchyard at Christmas Eve might possibly be a nod to a chapter of Charles Dickens' 1836/7 work 'The Pickwick Papers', where a story is related about one Gabriel Grub who is carried off by goblins to be made a better man in a sort of early version of the more familiar 'Christmas Carol'. It's not clear whether Russell is deliberately referencing this here, but there are certainly connections. But then 'Doctor Who' is never afraid to beg, borrow or steal from literature, folklore and old films!

    Hope you enjoy watching from at least Eccleston. If for no other reason, this show has had a near 24 and 20 year run respectively so there's a ton of history there. But the writer is very keen on little wink references to old stories. Him being adopted is a wink to Jodie Whittaker's Doctor, as were the villains from Wild Blue Yonder. The Giggle was in relation to the very first; Kate Lethbridge Stuart and Mel from UNIT have history going back to the third...just lots of little things that you can absolutely enjoy on their own, as usually every new doctor serves as a jumping on point, but they're that much sweeter when you actually GET them. Like that feeling when you quote a movie and someone knows precisely what you're talking about. Sweet like a cherry sundae. Badumtis!

    This episode was very "Dr Who!" They can be quite eccentric and sometimes it doesn't work! But when it does it's some of the best of British television! This one was good - and I think the Goblins were included because it was the Christmas episode! If you are watching Eccleston make sure you see The Unquiet Dead, The Empty Child and Dalek! Three of the best!

    Ncuti is so far a great doctor. I hope he continues to shine. I think the episode was good. not perfect, but honestly i'd still give it an 8/10 for keeping to what I feel is a typical Doctor Who cheesey/Christmasy story.
    Anyways that said, I look forward to your journey through the 2005 revival. It will go by in a flash, but I promise you, the journey is Absolutely Fantastic! :D

    I think you're actually right about them really being more like gremlins than goblins. But seems like Warner Bros have been arguing in court since 2021 that they own the word 'gremlin' even though it and the mythical creature existed before the movie! So I don't blame the Who team for steering clear of actually using the word out loud.

    • @BrainOnBinge
      @BrainOnBinge  8 месяцев назад +1

      That's interesting, I wonder if they'll win in court. & Yes I agree, best to stay to steer clear of the drama, gremlin or goblin I think the point came across fine.

      It's an interesting one. Fifteen is the first Doctor to have a kind of "synthetic" accent - a blend of posh eastern Scotland with a bit of Rwandan. So it's sort of autobiographical.
      I find the Rwandan bits easier to pick out than the Scottish elements; maybe that's because Fifteen's liquid consonants (l's in particular) are more Rwandan while the more Scottish vowels are more subtle.

    Production Values are High, but Story Telling is Poor, Plot & Development not Good at all. Ncuti is a Strong Actor and Held things together very well but had to be struggling with the lack of Material. Actors did a Solid Job, no complaint there. Disney will want a lot better for its streaming platform. Would have been in real trouble without Ncuti & Millie.
