    This was so refreshing to watch! Because they're picking up a storyline from 15(ish) years ago, there were lots of conversations within the fandom about whether it would be relevant to new audiences, so this was lovely to see! Special 2 is a WILD ride!

      It felt like a very welcoming introduction, there was enough context that made me want to go back and find out more but not enough that I felt overly confused or left out of the fun. I think they struck a great balance, at least from a first time viewer perspective. Thanks for watching along with me!

    Oh wow, it's so great and special to see someone come to it completely cold! It's part of what's kept the show going for 60 years that it always tries to grab new people as it goes, but it's always really hard once you're in to see if it's working. And on the one thing you weren't too sure about - having to constantly say goodbye to Doctors - it varies a lot. One only lasted a single TV movie, but the longest stayed seven seasons. I think the average at the moment is about three seasons. So long enough for it to *really* sting when you lose them! 😄

    • @BrainOnBinge
      @BrainOnBinge  8 месяцев назад +9

      I can imagine spending 3 seasons with one doctor and having them exit being pretty painful to watch, sounds like I'm in for quite a ride.

      @@BrainOnBinge It's the never-ending cycle of a DW fan. You grow to love a Doctor, then he regenerates and you're heartbroken, then you're unsure about the new Doctor at first, but then you grow to love them. And then they regenerate and the cycle starts all over.

    It's worth sticking with. I've been a fan almost all my life (46 years and counting) but the revival is a good place to start. It's silly, it's camp, it's funny and then it will absolutely rip out your heart and make you more emotional than you would ever expect a show like this could do.

    Welcome to the Whoniverse! Fortune favours the bold.
    I didn't think that intro narration was descriptive enough.
    Sylvie (Grand Mother) & Wilf (Great grandfather, the Grandad who stopped talking about aliens) both knew about the memory wipe.
    Usual lead actor advice is 'never do more than 3 years', the most recent have done specials on the end of their third seasons.

    Always fun seeing people discover the show, whatever episode they start watching from.
    And, as well as being good to see how quickly the stuff following up what was being done in 2008 fell into place for you, this particular story is loosely based on a Doctor Who comic strip from 1980, so it's nice to see the Meep twist works for those who aren't aware of that particular character.

    Oh, that's interesting... You are the first person that I've seen that is reacting to Doctor Who without all the background, just the specials. Well, the show has a whole lot of history and is made in a way that allows you to start at different points and, so far, I do think it's ok to watch the first 2 specials without seeing the rest of the show, but I highly recommend going back to season 1 episode 1 from the 2005. There's a lot of good stuff there and, if you don't wanna do that, as much as I would appreciate reactions to the whole thing, if you want, you can start the show from season 5 episode 1, no problem. One episode, I would say it's a must watch is "Blink". It's episode 10 from season 3. If you're going to watch from the start or if you're going to watch from season 5, I really recommend "Blink" either way. It's one of the best episodes of this show, simply amazing.
    Final thoughts tho: It's best to watch from season 1 episode 1 and keep going.

Also, the face and some character traits change, but memories, feelings...remain the same, so its the same Doctor but sometimes is more goofy, or more sassy...Donna is human, so it's always Donna. She is one of my favourites companions (that's how those who travel with The Doctor are called) and Tennant is my absolute favourite, althougth the first Doctor I saw when I was a kid was Fourth (and I love Tom Baker!), Tennant is MY Doctor. 🟦+♥️♥️ Greetings from Catalonia (and forgive my poor English, is my third language 😅).

    Interesting starting here, that's something I cherish deeply, seeing how people start, me personally I started with Series 5 (UK calls seasons series, though im not from the UK I still respect it), the first season with the 11th Doctor (played by Matt Smith). And thats the beauty of the show, while there is continuity, you can start almost anywhere (for the most part.) Heck I've seen even new people actually start with the original classic 1963-1989 run, though for new viewers in general I would still recommend starting with the revival and watch classics whenever.
    Either way, as The Doctor would say, have a wibbly wobbly timey wimey adventure!

    Came across your channel as saw you reacted to this, so watched it and loved your enthusiasm for the story and characters! I’ve instantly subscribed and it’s great that you’re going to watch NuWho from season 1 episode 1.
    I can tell you the following without revealing any spoilers (and you must constantly tell your subscribers at the start of a new episode NOT to tell you upcoming spoilers - because some fans will get so excited they will reveal stuff), that when the show was brought back in 2005, the show runner, Russell T. Davies made the bold decision to strip the series back, and remove a lot of previous classic Doctor Who lore away from the show (initially), allowing new audiences who had never seen the classic show to watch it without having to know everything that had gone on previously.
    Those initial first 6 stories of season 1 gave the viewer little snippets about the Doctor’s past life before 2005, so they were introduced to old classic monsters and villains slowly, and learnt everything about the Doctor through the eyes of the new companion Rose. All the relevant information that you’ll need to know will be revealed, and it’s better to have it drip fed to the audience bit by bit than in one big exposition dump!
    Again, no spoilers, but the actor who plays the Doctor in this new first season is famed British actor Christopher Eccleston (look up his fine body of work on IMDB), and his companion Rose is played by actress Billie Piper (who did a lot of stuff after Doctor Who.) Billie had a go at being a pop singer before joining DW, but was trained as a proper actress, as you will see, as she gives some amazing performances!
    One other thing (and as this isn’t really revealed until we’re well into the 1st season) but the Doctor’s ship, the TARDIS looks like a 1950’s British Police box for a specific reason. The TARDIS is supposed to have a working mechanism called the Chameleon Circuit that changes the exterior shape of his ship to fit in with the era in which it lands. So if it landed in Ancient Rome it could disguise itself as a Roman statue and not stand out. British Police boxes were still around in 1963 (they were designed for the general public to go inside one (a small interior box) which had a phone that they could call the police on and get Police assistance.) When the Doctor landed on Earth in the very first episode back in 1963, the TARDIS disguised itself as a Police box but then the mechanism got stuck so the ship’s design never changes. In reality, it was a script point so the production team didn’t have to go to any increased budget spending, changing the exterior every time there was a new sci-fi or historical story!
    Looking forward to seeing your future reactions to this brilliant, wonderful show that I’ve been watching here in the UK as a 6 year old, starting as I did with the 3rd Doctor (still my favourite), way back in 1970!

    It's so nice to see a reaction from the perspective of someone who has never watched the show before. I'm glad it resonated with you. A 60 year old show can be quite daunting, but the showrunners do a great job of adding in these jumping on points. Sometimes they do it like this with a recap, other times they'll bring in a new character who needs things explained to them (an audience surrogate), and occasionally they'll do a soft reboot of the show (these specials are serving as a soft reboot). I see you've already reacted to the next one so I'm heading over there now.

    This is definitely an interesting place to start watching. This Doctor is interesting, because he's actually the Fifteenth Doctor, but has the Tenth Doctor's face. He's slightly like Ten, but has his own flavor to his personality. Thankfully, David Tennant is one of the best actors to play the Doctor ever, so he was perfectly capable of taking on such a complex role of playing who he played before, and yet not who he played before.
    Donna is just Donna. A human. It's just that she's grown a little older, has a kid, and wasn't supposed to remember the Doctor.

    I definitely appreciate people jumping right into Doctor Who. I'm sure other people have pointed it out, but to give a quick rundown on the different eras of DW;
    The Classic Era (1963 - 1989): the show that started it all. While it is the origin, it's not really necessary to get the franchise, especially modern Doctor Who. Generally speaking, there are only a handful of episodes of each season and incarnations that are important, mostly when they get brought up again in modern DW. There are plenty of filler episodes, and even some episodes that are just lost because the BBC at the time destroyed the tapes of them because they didn't want to store them for future use (a decision that has lead then to doing animated recreations of lost episodes using the original scripts and audio in modern day). Basically, a few key episodes to watch, but it's not recommended to go through the whole thing.
    The 1996 movie: basically the first attempt to revive the show after its 1989 cancellation. It was intended to be a backdoor pilot for an American-produced Doctor Who tv series, starring what would be known as the 8th Doctor. Unfortunately, this failed to get a TV series off the ground, so many people aren't aware of what the 8th Doctor's journey would have been. However, since this is just a single film, it's an easy watch. And if you ever want to know what happened to the 8th Doctor after this, there are plenty of comics and audio dramas produced by Big Finish, as well as a short made for the 50th anniversary that ties into the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, that serves as the 8th Doctor's conclusion.
    Revived era (2005 - present....though I consider it ending as of 2021): the modern DW era, and easily the best place to recommend newcomers to start with. Not only is it easy to watch on streaming in order, but most of the episodes are fun to watch and aren't a waste of time.
    Now, the reason I say I believe the revival era ended in 2021 is because I genuinely believe the Disney+ Specials and the upcoming season of the 15th Doctor should be considered a new era of Doctor Who. Mainly because as of now, Disney had the international broadcasting rights to the show. It also a very convenient split, as the rest of the revival era can be watched on Max, whike the new Doctor Who stuff is on Disney+.

    Ooo yay I've been interested in seeing a reaction from someone who's never seen Doctor Who.
    My introduction to Doctor Who was the 20th anniversary special on DVD when I was like 5/6 years old which my dad got me and my brother to watch because my Dad is a massive fan who grew up on the 70s era of the show.
    So the new Tardis interior set is a brand new set for the 60th anniversary, so it's the first time any of us have seen that set. It's got the aesthetic of the classic era designs whilst having the multi level design of the modern era. It's also the biggest Tardis interior set ever.
    Also she's not saying at the end that she couldn't befriend a new face that's not what she cares about. She's saying why can't they stick around in whatever form they're in, because the doctor doesn't typically do being social and make house calls ect. They have but it's very rare. They're always running and onto the next adventure, not looking back.

    Wow...jumping in not knowing anything?....that's brilliant, as the Doctor would say😊. Doctor Who (the title is a question, his real name remains unknown) is the longest running science fiction show on TV,. It originally ran from 1963 -1989 and quickly became an UK TV favourite. An attempted reboot occurred with a TV movie in 1996 but the show returned in 2005 for a proper reboot and is still going, the specials are its 60th anniversary specials. The show is a gloriously simple idea - the adventures of a time travelling very old alien who selflessly helps others sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice (and you get a new Doctor).The Doctor generally travels with companions and the show varies from gothic horror through comedy to historic adventures and gold old space sci fi and is enormous fun. It'll mess with your head in a time travel way too. In my life its great to see a once shoestring budget show (in the old serial format with cliff-hanger endings) now become a global big budget extravaganza with a truly international audience. And who would have thought that an old police box would become an iconic space/time ship?.

    Welcome to Doctor Who, lovely reaction. Always nice to see someone new picking up the show. 😊 I jumped into the show as a kid during PBS rebroadcasts in the 1990s of the classic series (which originally ran from 1963-89), and was thrilled when the 2005 revival began and was a success.
    As others have said, some actors playing the Doctor last a longer or shorter amount of time. Same goes for companions along for the ride. This is one of the more popular actors to play the role since the revival, but everyone has their favorites or first. The general core of who the Doctor is generally remains the same, time traveling alien looking for adventure and helping out those found along the way. The other bits of story and character, you'll figure out as you watch. Hope you continue to enjoy the ride.

    Would be interesting to see you watch the show from Series 1 Episode 1 (2005), it's very aged now but if you liked the *characters* here (And some bumpy CG) then I think you'd love the characters from back then.

    Great to see this from the point of view of someone fresh to Doctor Who. As this is the 60th there is lot of #previous# you can catch up on, but good to see this had enough to get you into it without feeling completely lost - especially considering this fed off and referred to many past events.
    As a non-spoiler brief the show is split into classic who (1963-1989) and new who (2005-now) and it looks like they plan to refer to the next run as a start of a new era too.
    The classic who series saw 7 different actors in the role of the Doctor + 1 more in a US-produced movie that failed to reboot the franchise (1989). Then new who launched with another new actor and has seen a few changes since then.
    David Tenant played the '10th' incarnation of the Doctor and for reasons not yet fully explained returned as this '14th' incarnation just before this episode.
    During his time as the 10th doctor his most popular companion was Donna, but as you saw here she had to have her memories stripped to save her life and left the series.
    Actors played the doctor's role for widely varying lengths of time, so you won't know when their end is coming, and when they change (called regeneration) they change personality too but there is subtle consistency that means they are still the same Doctor despite the changes - this can be difficult for companions to accept at times. Over the years there has been many different companions, sometimes just one but other runs saw 2 or 3 companions travelling with the Doctor.
    As this is about time-travel there have been quite a few cross-overs with the Doctor meeting previous incarnations, but rules established early in the franchise means these events are rare and past selves loose memories of the events so it doesn't spoil the continuity of the show.
    Hope you look forward to delving into past seasons - might be worth seeking out a list of stories worth watching from classic who to give you some knowledge of that as well as hitting the new who era. As along with the few spin-off series it all makes 800+ episodes a daunting list to start with!

    • @BrainOnBinge
      @BrainOnBinge  8 месяцев назад +1

      800+ Episodes? Wow! I'll be starting the revival, or New Who, next week. The Doctor and Donna have great chemistry so I can see why she would be his most popular companion. Looking forward to seeing the chemistry between the other versions of the Doctor and their companions.

    Glad you liked it. The whole series is similar in tone so it seems you will probably like them all. Well worth the trip to explore a lot of back story etc. then theres Classic Who which has even more back story to it and is very old at this point and still get touched on from time to time. Each “face” is not necessarily 1 season, some have multiple. It was just a clever way that was thought up to replace the original actor in classic who that carried over. As a result, you get people picking their favourites, usually referred to by number. Its always been a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously generally and I think that is a large part of its charm.

    It's important to be aware The Doctor is the same thoughout but each Doctor has a different face & personality.
    The Doctor has trouble with watching others change around them, aging especially or getting sick because whether a Male or Female they just change & live on.
    The companions ultimately break The Doctor's heart & each incarnation tries to move on, trying desperately not to look back sometimes out of choice but sometimes for another reason.
