One of the things that makes RTD's Doctor Who stories so good is how he leaves "breadcrumbs" and plot threads throughout the season which all come together in the finale. I'm getting those story vibes from this episode.

Ncuti felt like he had been playing The Doctor for a long time. He knew who we was as The Doctor right away, unlike previous Doctors who needed an episode, or two or three, to become their true version of themselves.

Nice job picking up on the fact that having the Toymaker show up has opened things up to more mystical/magical/supernatural villains/elements. In the behind-the-scenes video for this episode, that is exactly what RTD said is happening.
I'm really excited to see where this season takes us. I love that we've already gotten a lot of breadcrumbs for things to come.

Invoking superstition at the edge of our universe, which operates on logic, allowing luck, magic and mysticism to seep in from other dimensions was such a cool choice, since it allows a new set of creatures and events under an explanation that works for the DW universe.

I think it's clear Flood knows what a TARDIS is, but just didn't clock it until it took off because she's never met the Doctor (at least not after "An Unearthly Child"). It's not like all of them look like a police box.

RTD's 2005 revival really set up the 9th Doctor who knows everything, fantastical, mystical really. Stuff of legends. RTD's newest revival seems to set up the 15th Doctor as someone who's very eager to learn and understand the new things that are happening around him. And I love the new direction. Sci-fi has been explored so much over the years in Doctor Who, magic will undoubtedly create more story-writing opportunities for future writers.

While 14’s superstitious antics at the edge of the universe COULD be to blame for the ‘magic’ of the goblins, it’s worth also noting that this isn’t the first time that the Doctor has come across more metaphysically-inclined foes: in the 10/Martha era, they faced off against the Carrionites who drew power from ‘perfectly chosen’ words for energy and that was similarly mistaken for witchcraft.
As Thor: The Dark World illustrated, magic could easily be another branch of science/physics that we just haven’t got our heads round yet - I liked that this episode also re-raised that perspective.

Jon Pertwee's Doctor faced a Dæmon from the planet Dæmos, an alien who gave rise to various devil myths throughout history, and who used "psionic forces" to produce apparently magical effects. Likewise, Tom Baker's Doctor defeated Sutekh, the Egyptian god, who was actually from a race of aliens called Osirians.

Mrs. Flood is definitely an OG in the Whoniverse. She knew what a TARDIS was but didn’t realize it was one until it took off, meaning she’s seen TARDISes as default TT Capsules rather than a blue box.
She’s not the Master/Missy, because she’s way too joyous and friendly (even Missy with her “good guy” arc still had a bit of malice in her), so in my mind there’s only one other woman in the Doctor Who canon who could have lived for this long: Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter.

The doctors in the show work around the clock, not to say this life which they know is pointless, but to keep him alive until the day after Christmas so his family doesn't have to think of Christmas as the day when daddy died.
I can't help thinking about this when watching the scene where that woman calls Ruby to tell her that they could not find a parent. You couldn't wait 36 hours to call her, to let her have at least one Christmas where she feels there's still some hope? Seriously? Maybe the goblins drop the Christmas tree on her to signify she won the Grinch award for really thoughtless timing.

So a couple of small things. First in the British broadcast we get confirmation that the show is back in May, not just a general spring date. Second thing, Davina Mcall (I’m butchering her name) actually runs a show in the uk about finding family if you’re a foundling who was abandoned and then found somewhere weird (I.e a church in the snow or a portable toilet). Third thing, Anita Dobsion the actress who plays Mrs Flood was an old Eastenders star (one of biggest soaps in the uk) and was in the episode that still holds for the most viewed soap episode in the uk with 30.15 million viewers on Christmas Day in 1986. Finally just a small bit about what you mentioned about visiting old companions is that they don’t really do that. They tend to respect their companions personal timelines so it’s why 15 won’t visit Sarah Jane despite having a Time Machine.
Anyway I loved this episode. Never been won over by a doctor so quickly

Great video. Really enjoyed it. Things we know: RTD has said that the mystery of Ruby's parents will wound through this season, both her mother and father. This would make me think Mrs Flood isn't related to Ruby. Also, the end where Mrs Flood looks down the camera and asks about never seeing a TARDIS before, is a shot repeated through the episode. When the Doctor and Ruby are in the goblin ship, the Doctor is staring down the camera to look for the right rope. It's done again when The Doctor and Ruby are looking at the pictures of the other foster kids on the fridge. Are these connected? And did you catch Ncuiti's "10ism"? 32 minute mark, Ruby asks the Doctor if the goblins are the cause of all accidents, the Doctor replies with a very David Tennant style "Oooohhhhhh". Perfect. Just perfect.

I was thrown by the fantasy, song & dance. In many ways, RTD recreated Doctor Who back in 2005. One of the things I lijed about the Chibnall era was that it felt more like classic Who. You, however, mentioned some things which made me reconsider: the consequence of the Doctor invoking superstition. More fantastical foes continuing that with the Toymaker's legions.
I knew, when they had 2 speaking actors, in the setup with Sir Isaac Newton, that we would be seeing him again. That's compounded by "mavity."
Is interesting to see how RTD2 has re-reinvented the show for an intended expanded audience in this Disney+ era.

Ruby actually feels like a real three-dimensional person. I miss Russell's writing companions. I will say, it felt like Ruby was just totally okay with everything going on. I was waiting for her “WTF is going on” freakout. But that looks like that’s coming at the beginning of the next episode. She did say that it's all been so manic she hasn't had time to process and at the end of this episode she did do the “it’s bigger on the inside‽” without actually saying it. And it was awesome! I loved her mother and grandmother. I thought the song was a lot of fun and I loved that Fifteen improvised on the spot. However, once again, Ruby did not lose it at what was happening threw me for a bit. I honestly thought this was going to end with the doctor calling for Ruby’s bio mom’s attention like Twelve did with Bill’s mom. Kind of glad he didn’t. I figured there was something up with Mrs. Flood because of her reaction to the Doctor going in and out of the TARDIS but that fourth wall break really shocked me! And she mentions way back in her first scene that she hasn’t seen one in 50 years. They brought back “mavity” and I’m wondering if that’s a puzzle piece in the mystery box. I hope we see more of Ruby’s friends. And did anyone else really like that cop character? Questions: Who are Ruby’s parents? Who is Mrs. Flood? Why does she drop the bags in shock in the dark timeline if she knows what a TARDIS is? Is Mrs. Flood connected to Ruby’s parents? Is all of this connected to The One Who Waits?

It feels like the alien presence is less of something that keeps getting forgotten, and more of an open secret in the universe atp. So as I’m just like a year older than Ruby, if I lived in the Who universe at her place in life, sure it’d be a bit shocking at first but after a brief moment I’d also just be like “fuck it” tbf🤣 London’s streets opened down to the Earth’s crust only a few months ago, hahaha!
I’m also wondering about the cop character, since I’ve heard Ruby’s boyfriend is supposed to crop up in S14 next year. I wasn’t a fan of Ncuti’s sonic after seeing the photos, but got used to it pretty quick during the episode. Overall, just a beautiful enjoyable episode and as long as the Christmas cheese stays in that designated Christmas slot I think not much will be done wrong in the coming episodes!!

@Omn1Media My personal theory is that Ruby's mother is actually Missy, or at least some new female regeneration of the master. Meaning she set the doctor up to travel with her daughter. Which would be a very Missy thing to do.
Then she just went a few doors down, took a new name, and watched Ruby grow up.
I swear that lady is gonna regenerate into the master. I'm calling it right now

@@terrysilverthorn4582Thats a good one. I was kind of going with that approach and thinking River Song (pond/river/flood). But better writing would just have it be a new villain. RTD wants a new audience and the old one so best just write good stories and forget about all the other stuff.

So the thought I had immediately is that Ruby is just a bootstrap paradox, and she's her... own mother somehow for some reason. Either that, or she dropped herself off but isn't her own mother.

This was such a fun & great episode. I definitely was not expecting the singing, but I’ll take it. I think we can expect a lot of dancing from 15 for sure. Ncuti is amazing as the Doctor - fun & charismatic, but also able to carry that emotional weight. He & Millie have great chemistry together. Spring can’t come soon enough!

I actually think that Ruby is that one that dropped Ruby at the church, and that Mrs Flood is also Ruby, just older. Its all very timey-whimey, my theory but it makes a very Dr Who sort of sense.
They made a very big deal about the similarities between 15 and Ruby, both being foundlings, neither knowing their parentage. I think theyre setting up Ruby as the mirrornthat allows the Dr insight into him being the timeless child and what that means for him.
Im starting to think that Ruby amd the Dr are related, but maybe not how in the way the internet is speculating.

First I thought Mrs. Flood is River (Flood-Pond-River) but after a second watch I think she's just used to tell the audience what that weird blue box is because they never say in the episode (and this series is supposed to be a re-start and therefore they want to include a new audience). And RTD took the opportunity to fcuk with us.
